Updated for the Snowflake Challenge 2025.

Welcome to my journal, created primarily for my fannish pursuits because this is my escape from Real Life, my happy place. So, although I'll have some personal stuff, it'll mostly be fandom related. Fic, meta, interesting links, videos, and random bits. I enjoy discussions and I welcome anyone new who wants to say hello. Don't be afraid to comment on anything that interests you, no matter how old the post is! I love talking about my fandoms. I also welcome any questions, about Dreamwidth or anything else, I'm always happy to help if I can!

Title: It Helps, Though
Fandom: MASH
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: Teen
Characters: Hawkeye, Trapper, Frank, Radar, OC
Words: 178
Summary: The newest doctor to join the 4077th, gets quite an eye-opening introduction to the insanity.

IT HELPS, THOUGH

The first real introduction to the 4077th that newly assigned Captain Drew Weatherly experienced had been an eye-opener, when, in the course of showing him around, Corporal O’Reilly (apparently nicknamed ‘Radar’) had led him to a tent with a sign that read ‘The Swamp,’ and opened the door to a scene Drew was completely unprepared for; a man was sitting on one of the cots with a bedpan on his head, wrapped in a straightjacket, and connected to the cot with a dog leash, while two others sat on cots opposite, sipping from what looked like martini glasses… yeah, there were definitely olives in them.

Drew must have made some kind of startled noise without realizing it, because the curly-headed one spoke up, “That’ll be the last time Frank breaks our still,” he proclaimed, and the two men nodded exaggeratedly at each other.

“Not to worry, we have the training manual around here somewhere,” the dark-haired man said, riffling through a stack of nudie magazines on a rickety table, “You’ll be one of us in no time.”

Here's a new one on me: Has anyone ever gotten gibberish as a spam comment on AO3?

It was a huge block of text that looked like this:

.'smylxL2P>sS5j=RIE]ScX-7DR&V\FU?[79jO94@\f!IB:w[3"aJv%J:}pIRO$q=K `q4Bv_ C6=q%OD-8MY^(;|EHNh3bS7C3e#gf}IsNZ(ETXFlS'V4ZipY|rr^2_kVqs]?ty4a8

It was from a guest. Yes, I have guest comments turned on for most of my works, I get so little engagement with my work that I'm not going to turn it off unless I have to, heck I've only gotten a couple of spam comments in all the time I've been on AO3.

I marked it as Spam and moved on, but I've never seen it before. What's the point of this one?

Here is one of the fills I wrote for [community profile] threesentenceficathon. It got such a lovely response, I decided to share it here first, although I'll be posting more later.

For the prompt: any, any, "Strange, the way it felt like home – to wander through the dark, alone."

DARK AND LIGHT

The night was a familiar companion, dark and comforting, like the only home he’d ever known, but at the same time empty and cold now that he’d let the only light in his life walk away.

Sleep was elusive as always, fractured by nightmares of the worst times and taunting visions of what might have been, still, the 3:00 am knock at the door was as startling as a gunshot… especially since he felt who was on the other side with every fiber of his being.

When Sonny opened the door, Rico stood there with a bag slung over one shoulder and a sheepish but hopeful expression on his face; underneath that, though, was the echo of the same desperation, loneliness, and love that had swamped Sonny ever since they’d said goodbye… he let the light in.

Title: One Way Out
Author: Cat Moon
Fandom: Miami Vice (tv)
Pairing/Characters: Sonny/Rico, OC
Rating/Category: R/Slash
Summary: An undercover deal goes bad, leaving Rico and Sonny only one choice: protect each other. They’re partners, it’s what they do. Sometimes, that gets out of hand and goes way over the top. The repercussions of this one will change their partnership forever.
Notes/Warnings: Inspired by the scene in the ep, "Smuggler's Blues," where Rico gets frisked and Sonny's interesting reaction to that. SA is mentioned but does not occur.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

Baby's First Moodboards. Still have to get the hang of it, I'm afraid... When I have more time.

In my head canon (and the fic series I'm working on), Sonny and Rico will be dressed similar to this at their ceremony, with Rico in a white tux w/black accents and Sonny in a black tux w/white accents. Also, the quote is from the show, after yet another bad romance, Sonny tells Rico he wishes he could get his head and heart together, just once...
Miami Wedding Mood
This is a quote from Rico in the series, spelling his name: Tough, unique, bad, bold, and sassy. 😍 Also, check out the eyelashes on the top right photo.  I always say, oughta be illegal! 😉

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I've been thinking about it and I have to say that my #1 trope is AU - Canon Divergent. But I don't think of it that way because I don't really consider it to be a trope (for that matter, I don't consider it to be an AU). It's taking canon and altering it somehow, which I think the majority of fanfic does, as long as it's not set exactly in canon with no changes. Or am I not grasping the meaning quite right?

I did a Tiermaker chart and everything for last year's Snowflake, so I'm just going to link to that post here: Favorite Tropes 2025. My tastes haven't changed.
mxcatmoon: Rico in glasses sexy (MV: Rico glasses)
I'm already having a great time doing [community profile] threesentenceficathon. Pimping my guys, mostly, I admit. 😉

I'm almost finished with my fic for [community profile] smallfandomfest . All it needs is the sex scene, so naturally I'm procrastinating. But guess what, it's the longest fic I've written since 2019! Looks like I might be finally going to start writing some longer stuff again. Amazing what an extra dose of inspiration can do...

HELP! I just don't know... I've always posted my drabbles to AO3 as 'chapters' in a drabble collection... Some people think that's "cheating". I'm thinking of posting them separately now -- but honestly, to me that feels like 'padding' my story count. I'm so undecided.

First, a quick announcement before I get into the challenge: [community profile] threesentenceficathon  IS LIVE! Go and leave prompts, fill prompts, it's a ton of fun! Even if you don't think you'll like it, you may surprise yourself. It's also a great, low pressure, quick and easy way to get the creative juices flowing (which fits in with Snowflake Challenge #8, the creative process).

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

It's never a comfortable task, but I've gotten better at it with practice.

1. If you do any remote energy work, Reiki, etc., I could use some sent my way. I hurt my ribs on Sunday (left side), and it's actually hurting worse now than it was. Might have been the fact that I did quite a bit of walking yesterday. I didn’t think walking would make it worse, but I might have been wrong.

2. Yeah, I don’t have any expectations for this one, but if anyone has ever thought about writing a Miami Vice fic… (preferably Sonny/Rico). Or art, or songvid. It’s hard being in such a tiny fandom with so little content.

3.  How about a bit of self-promotion? Check out my community, [community profile] vocab_drabbles It's a weekly prompt comm using mostly college-level and rarer words as inspiration. It's not just for drabbles anymore, as it grew beyond that quickly, but I haven't changed the name because I didn't want to confuse people (although it's a decision I've been contemplating) -- and Vocab Drabbles does have a ring to it. There are no deadlines, and we currently have fics in 115 different fandoms.

Challenge #3: Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned during previous years' challenges, that fandom saved my life. It made life not just bearable, but enjoyable, when I was going through hard times, distracting me from physical and mental pain. A lot of my social life was around fandom -- and yes, that includes pre-internet when people got together in person. I travelled places I wouldn't have seen (for cons and visiting fan friends). I learned things I wouldn't have known. And it constantly provides a creative outlet that enriches my life.

Title: Hopeless Heart
Fandom: Miami Vice (TV)
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: PG
Words: 65
POV: Sonny Crockett (Sonny/Rico)
Notes: About the ‘author’. With the few fandoms I’ve done poetry for in the past, I’ve used a special pseudonym for the specific character pov, just for fun. For Josef’s poems in Moonlight, I used JK Fitz, his initials and Fitz(gerald) the name he was using when he lived in NYC, just because it sounded cool. Sunshine Superman is Sonny’s, because I think it fits him both in terms of irony and his true nature.

Feelings achingly verboten

Words remaining unspoken

Truth buried at the bottom of a bottomless pit

Cruising dark streets

That keep my secrets

Screaming inside

With a whimper, not a bang

Lies of omission haunt the narrative

Self-deceit rules the scene

Denying my soul’s other half

Tasting hopeless, yet unable to give up hope

Holding ‘someday’ close like a talisman

Knowing someday will never come

Catching up...
Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.
Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Hi, I'm Cat Moon and I'm a Miami Vice-aholic.

I used to be a nice, normal fan who posted about different fandoms and wrote a variety of stuff. Now I've got the MV monkey on my back. I have no intentions of kicking the habit any time soon, though. Forgive me.

And I'm doing the challenge because it's fun, and because I always do it, and because it'll help make my journal posts more regular for a while.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Last year, I would have enjoyed this challenge, but I'll be honest and say that I'm still not over losing my Chewy. Talking about him will just make me too sad. (I'm like Rico Tubbs, I push my grief down deep and distract myself with other things). Hmm, maybe I can try to find a way to relate every challenge to Miami Vice somehow, that'd be fun... A challenge within a challenge.

I just wrote a MV ficlet about Sonny and Rico adopting a stray cat, though. It was inspired by an episode where they got an orange kitten for Gina. It relates because my Chewy was orange. And his name when I got him was Sonny. Even though I wasn't in the fandom back then, I enjoyed Miami Vice when it was on and so I instantly related his name to Crockett and didn't rename him (Chewy was a nickname because he always wanted to chew on things he wasn't supposed to, especially plastic bags). The universe is strange and weird, because now I'm into Miami Vice in a big way and writing fic about them having an orange cat.

mxcatmoon: Sonny and Rico with kitten (MV: Kitty)
No, it's not Sunday, but I haven't done any of these in a while, and that's the title of my post series, so.

I've written two stories this year so far, which is a good start even though they're both short. I've got to get cracking on my prompt fill for
Small Fandom Fest, too. Yikes! And I've got my main series to work on, and a continuation of a fic that was originally only going to be a short one-shot, but popular demand inspired me to expand it...

This show, this show. I can't believe the stuff it has me doing! I'm almost ashamed to admit. Stuff I swore I would never do. Like sign up with TikTok. Forgive me. I still hate it. I only want to see Miami Vice related vids, and the short length of a lot of them is ridiculous. I found a new-to-me artist though, who posted one of his songs to an MV video. But serious, I really hate it. Very annoying site.

I post a lot of episode reactions on Tumblr now, instead of just lurking like I used to do. I've been taking notes and making screencaps as I watch the episodes. I'm considering making some gifs, now that I have the means to do it... Heck, if I had the patience I could make music videos. I made a Sonny/Rico playlist (well, several of them on my classic Media Player, but one online for sharing). I've started making memes, and oh yeah, I've also started using screenshots/photos to make Titles for my fanfic. Sheesh!

I was just lurking on r/Miami Vice on Reddit and thinking about how this show truly had something for everyone. Men, women, people of all genders and sexual orientations, slash fans, action fans, cishet men who loved the cars/boats/guns/bikini-clad women, there was POC diversity, social commentary that's still relevant today, gorgeous men... And we're all still here thirty years later, happy as pigs in shit. 😀😁🤣

ETA: I forgot to mention the poetry: I've started writing MV poems, too! I only do it occasionally, just with a couple of characters/fandoms that particularly inspire me that way. I should have known, though, with an angst-puppy character like Sonny Crockett.

Title: Reminders of Miami
Fandom: Miami Vice (TV)
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: PG
Words: 668
Characters: Sonny/Rico
Summary: Sonny, Rico, and a cat. A study in Cute.
Notes: This fic in in the same ‘universe’ as my story, “Baby Ducks,” but works fine as a standalone, too.
Inspired by the scene in “Death and the Lady,” where the boys got a kitten for Gina, because I died of cute. Also, I have a special interest. I lost my own orange baby last year, after 14 years of companionship. When I got him, he’d been named Sonny. Yes, I had an orange cat named Sonny. Of course I didn’t change his name, but I did mostly call him Chewy since he was always chewing on things he shouldn’t (especially plastic bags).

I'm a simple person. I don't play video games. The only concession I have is the basic Solitaire game, I play that pretty often for the mindless stress relief.

Some of you may not know that there is the option to create custom decks. With my old computer, I had a Torchwood (mostly Ianto) deck. For the new one, I created a new one for Miami Vice. Photos can be used for all the face cards. The background is also customizable (in this case it's Sonny sucking on an ice cube). It makes the game more fun.

Yes, Sonny and Jack are the queens. That's just the way it is. 😉

According to my computer, I've got around 390 hours of music on my hard drive. That's mine, no one can take it away, and I'm not renting it. I've been collecting music all my life and put all my cassettes and DVDs on the HDD, as well so that's one reason I have so much accumulated. I still have quite a few CDs, but most if not all of those I also copied to the computer.

Don't get me wrong, I love high fidelity. If I had the space/money I'd want the best possible quality media and equipment to play it on. I used to have an awesome stereo with huge speakers, back in the day. I can't do that now though, for various reasons.

Do you keep physical copies, digital copies you own, or mostly stream? Have a poll:

Happy Christmas to all who celebrate!

As usual for someone whose job is affected by the holidays, I'm pretty relieved it's over. It's just exhausting, and somehow, I'm always too busy to really get into the season. I don't even bother decorating these days.

But I got a nice, unexpected Christmas present this year. My job does random drawings weekly during the season, as a way to encourage people to not call out. If you have perfect attendance that week, you're entered to win one of the prizes. On Monday, a few of us were talking about the prizes and I was saying that there wasn't anything I really wanted, except maybe a TV.  I didn't really need one, but mine is in my bedroom. I have a small, old one in the living room, the kind that doesn't have internet. Since I don't have cable and rabbit ears don't work where I live, all it's good for is watching DVDs, so I said it would be nice to have a TV for the living room. On Tuesday, which was my day off, my name was called for a 65". So yesterday on Christmas Eve, I came home with a new TV. Merry Christmas to me! It was just so weird and funny how I was talking about it the day before, and then I won it the next day.
