How to remove paint from slate flooring?

We have moved into a new-to-us house and the previous owners had painted over the original multi-colored slate foyer with a muddy brown color… I'm not thrilled with the natural multicolored floor either, but the overpainted brown is more hideous than it looks in the photo.
