Coal from the closed Murton Mine, November 1992
Murton mine shut on the 29 November 1991 but the stockpile of coal was still being moved away a year later. At this time the rapid loader was still operational, but a number of mine buildings had been demolished.A once common view all over County Durham of coal being moved from pit to power station. At this time Sunderland South Dock traincrews were still employed shifting coal. This was a view not far from dusk on a winter's day with the train leaving Murton.
