So, yeah. I thought it might be an interesting exercise to get an overview of just what all is IN this brave new world that we're all living in.

There is now a 1.2.4 Recommended Build. I do not have time to do all the prep work and verification tonight.

Unless something else comes up with the RB, I will get the server upgraded by 1.2.4 by the end of the week. I will try to do get things done tomorrow, but I may need to hold off till Friday. Two more days, okay?

I think everything is in place for this, however I will note that I will need an hour or two period with the server offline or whitelisted just to me to do final checks, etc.

I will try to post here before I actually hit the switch and upgrade the server.

ETA: Updated. Please note that some double doors may have had one of the pair flipped to the wrong direction. You will have to break that door and re-place it.

There's still no recommended build of Bukkit out yet.

I am thinking at the middle of next week, unless I see something in the changelog from the last Bukkit beta that sounds like a showstopper, I am going to switch the server to use the Bukkit beta.

Just noting that I am going to be grabbing a special backup of everything before I switch, if that ends up happening. If a horrible enough bug shows it's face the server may have to be rolled back to that state, I do not expect this, but I am not sure if I trust a non-recommended Bukkit build.

The question is, do we want this? Or are we fine staying on 1.1 till there is a stable build out?

So, as some of you may have heard in the IRC channel(s), my creative muse has taken it upon herself to insist that I make a (really big) volcanic crater. By my best estimate this is going to take tens, if not hundreds of thousands of cobblestone blocks and I figured, hey. If anybody's got some lying around that they've got no use for? I'll gladly take it off your hands.

Donation boxes are located in my dome (+150x, +300z), in the middle room. Access by aboveground lapis-block building, the boat dock (secondary sphere out in the water), or by minecart from the Spawnpoint Station (hit the lever on the wall to change the track direction).

PS: Yes, I know I have a cobblestone generator. 100,000 cobblestone out of the generator at one block per second (which is being generous) works out to approximately twenty-eight straight hours of staring at the same block. This would not do good things for my mental stability *g*

Yeah, I know you all want to play with all the new shinies.

Well, due to the life of running a Bukkit server, this means that we are going to have to be stuck on 1.1 until probably sometime next week. There is a testing build out, but I would rather not risk our server ( and having to roll back to today's server state ) if there are bugs in the build of the server.

So don't upgrade your client. I know this sucks, bleh. -- If you have upgraded your client, I am sure y'all can find a 1.1 JAR somewhere *cough*

ETA: There is a 1.2 beta ( unstable ) build of the server, but a few of the required plugins do not work with the server yet. Laaa wait wait wait.

So I noticed the signs at the spawnpoint, and one of them looked a little bit off-angled, so I went to go knock it down to make it face the right way.

...of course, it's in the no-messing-with-things zone, so it promptly replaced. Without text.

Anyway. I decided to take off from the spawn point, in a boat, to find another place to stripmine for sand (to turn into glass for my dome constructions)

I had to go all the way to 3600x,200z to find another scrap of respectable land (there were a couple of dinky little islands I passed along the way)

In short: that ocean near the spawn point? REALLY BIG.

So today I discovered NPC village #2 located at x -778, z 834. It's right near the edge of a snowy-forest biome. Thought you guys would like to know.

I've marked out a square area at the area around (84, 219) (just on the other side of the hill opposite the spawn house). I'm envisioning that this might be a good place to build a Classic Spleef Arena. Alternatively, we can make another type of arena somewhere, if we want. (I figured that it might be nice to have it close to spawn, but I can totally understand if we wouldn't want that. It can be made underground if people want.)

Classic Spleef is basically a game where players attempt to dig out the blocks underneath their opponents' feet and cause them to drop into the water below. The last person left standing is the winner. It can be quite fun :D

I haven't explored the other Spleef game types on that page, so if anybody thinks another game type would be better, feel free to mention it!

I also made sure that when marking the boundaries I didn't destroy any blocks that were already there (other than grass), so if we decide not to build there we can just remove the cobble/netherrack that's there and it'll be just the same as before.

Very interested to know your thoughts :D

There's been talk about having a better spawn area that looks like it's made as a spawn rather than a collection of buildings. I've been slightly against moving spawn in the past, but having logged on today and seeing that the boundaries of the spawn protection area have been marked out, I notice that it does include a lot of good hilly area that I'd kind of hate to have chopped down.

What's the latest news on the spawn area?

(btw, I notice the community membership is moderated. I think it would be nice to have membership to be open, personally; I can't think of a reason to keep it moderated. What does everybody else think?)
