Tutorial: Part 3 of my Display-Board and Movement-tray

Allright, i got this project finished and i am really happy how it turned out. I took it two times to the gaming club and it was easy to carry, and also the models were stored much faster. At home i took the two boards out of the box and placed them into my showcase. Its not longer needed to touch each model 🙂

Here is the ikea Box called Samla holding 65 Litre (about 8 Euro):

Now you need to measure the inside of the box and buy some wood, screws and brackets to build up the framework which is holding the boards.

brackets are in L-Shape and 2,5cm screws (really cheap at workshops)

I placed my token box and measured the hight of it, to adjust the brackets for the first board. After that i measured my Denny 3 for the hight of the second board. I glued magnets onto the bottom side of each tray so that they stick with the brackets.  I used a handsaw so i couldnt manage to do some straight cuts, but if you have a jigsaw it will look much better. But for know the frame does his job 😉

At the bottom you see enough place for the tokenbox, then the first board with my Denny 3 and then the second board with enough space to the top. If you arent carrying a colossal you can easily store 4 Boards into the box.

I can easily carry two lists to my club without spending to much time to pack them and move them back  into the showcase.

I hope this helps to make one on your own. The whole thing have cost me about 40 Euro with magnets from ebay and some hobby time. And for about 2 Euro you can easily upgrade it with more boards.

Tutorial: Custom made Dice Tray

You want a nice looking but cheap dice tray fitting your army or board game? Here you are:

What you need:

  • a picture frame with a 2cm border (about 1 inch), size 19cm x 23,5 cm or smaller [5 Euro)
  • a custom printed mousepad, you get it in nearly every printshop [9 Euro]
  • wood glue or super glue
  • a knife
  • a ruler
  • black primer

Backside

Remove the stand on the backside of the frame.

Remove the glas on the inside

I primed the mdf on both sides black.

And finally cut the Mousepad to a fitting size and glue it into the inside of the frame 🙂

Tutorial: how to make a Cryxian Spelldisc

I have found a video on Youtube from General Splatton and tried it with some changes, you can find the video here.

Step 1: What you need

part1

  • The plastic is from a empty water bottle
  • A one inch circle cutter (got mine form ebay)
  • a permanent marker
  • a thin marker
  • waywatcher green glaze from GW
  • Ceramite or White Scar from GW
  • Green Fluo from Vallejo
  • Matt Varnish from Vallejo

Step 2:

Just empty a bottle of water and cut some plastic. Then you simply use the circle cutter and you have a nice  piece of round plastic 🙂

Step 3:

Take of the plug from the permanent marker and draw the inner circle with the thin one,like shown on the picture.

Step 4:

Paint a coat of matt varnish on the front and the backside, but just on the outer ring and let it dry. The glaze will have a much better hold on it.

Step 5:

Paint three coats of Waywatcher Green Glaze on the front of the outer ring and one on the backside of your spelldisc. After that you can wipe off the green marker with a tissue.

Step 6:

Paint Runes from your faction with a white colour. i used some runes from the faction font. You can find it here

After the White runes are dry i have painted over them with some green fluo.

Step 7:

Cut a hole with a knife, like i did on the first picture, so that you can fit the spelldisc onto the hand of your caster, and you should be done!

fourth step:

I started to airbrush 2 layers with steel legion drab and zandri dust from GW.


Fith step:

After this was dry, i started to glue the basing material (sand, gras, cork, stones and some branches as trees). This took some stages. I have left the colossal base circle unbased to drill the holes for the magnets. I used 7x3mm neodymn magnets from ebay.


Sixth step:

I used a coat of vallejo matt varnish over the irontape to avoid scratches. Then i superglued magnets to Deneghras Base and try to fit her.


And here a pic with the full board.


The final stage for tray one will be posted next time.

I started to hate those foams, the figs dont fit perfect and from time to something breaks off and you have to glue it again. And it tooks me a lot of time to put them back into the display cabinet or into my suitcase. I have seen those round cutted wooden trays, which brought me to an idea. I think they arent perfect enough and quite expensive when it comes to shipping costs to austria. So i will start to build my own. I will put everything into a Sammla Box from Ikea.

  
I have one for my Terrain and Scenery, so it was easy to measure how big one inlay could be. Luckely its 2x Din A4. (42cm x 29,4cm

  
What you need for the first step:

  1. Ikea Sammla Box 
  2. Pencil
  3. Roundcutter (see picture) 5 Euro from Amazon
  4. Modelbases
  5. Drilling Machine
  6. Wood Glue
  7. Irontape
  8. Magnets (ebay)
  9. Rasp
  10. Sandpaper
  11. Mdf Board (Medium Density Fibreboard) 

For the MDF Board i had luck my hardware store has exactly the right sice 42×29,4 cm and 2cm thick. 

  
I used the Bases to mark circles that i have cut out. For 30mm i used the 32mm roundcutter where i had nothing to rasp. For 40mm i used the 40mm roundcutter which i had to buy extra cause it wasnt in my set. The first time i took the 38mm one but i had to rasp for ages until the base fits into the hole. For the 50mm one i used, you guessed it 😉 the 50mm one. The grad circle on the picture is for colossal bases or the warcaster and one of his attachement. For example gaspy 3 and vociferon or my goreshade 3 on a large base. I have a solution for colossal bases in my mind, because a 120 mm roundcutter is a way too expensive.

 Second step (Rasping and gluing)

 
After i have rasped everything, i have filled the hole board with my army. To make sure evry hole is the right size. Then i started to glue the mdf boards together and let it dry for about 24 hours. Make sure you put something heavy on it so that it will stay under pressure.

Third Step (Irontape and Magnets)

I have cutted the Irontape from amazon and glued it into the holes. Luckely it is adhesive.

  
Enough for now. Next step i will airbrush the whole board with steel legion drab and zandri dust, both colours are from games workshop.
