The Day in Spikedluv (Friday, Jan 23)
Jan. 24th, 2026 09:31 amI hit Price Chopper, Tractor Supply, and the Bakery while I was downtown. (I had to look for a cat door for the automotive garage because there are stray cats that come around when Pip puts out food. He thinks they’ll take care of his rat problem if he allows them in the garage, as well as give them a place to go when it’s cold out. I think he might be opening himself up to ~other problems, such as skunks getting in that door. o_O I did not find one, so he’s having his sister (garage receptionist/book keeper) order one. Update: she couldn’t find what he was looking for online, either. Hmm.)
I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I placed an online order and paid a bill online. We had the meatloaf for supper.
Today’s tea was English Breakfast. I’m not a huge fan of this tea, but I drink it when I’m at Panera because they got rid of my preferred tea (Earl Grey) when they downsized to having just three types of tea bags.
I managed to write ~2,000 words on my SFBB fic! There’s light at the end of this tunnel. *g* I also watched Wild Cards, 9-1-1 and some House Hunters International.
Temps started out at 19.4(F) and reached 23.7. It got windy in the afternoon which made it very cold. I wore four layers for the walk when Pip got home from work (a pullover sweatshirt, a hoodie, a jacket, and another jacket over that), not counting the double layer of pants and the ski mask and scarves, etc. On his after-dinner walk with the dogs, Pip wore his Carrhart overalls in addition to the coat, so you know it was cold out there.
As if that isn’t bad enough . . . Tonight’s overnight low is forecasted to be -6 with a high on Saturday of 6. There’s a warning for wind chills of -23 “over the next 48 hours” so thanks for not being specific of when I’m going to become a popsicle on walks. I’m really not looking forward to this PLUS snow.
I promised to share a photo of the sunflower tea bag coasters I bought. The angle I took the photo at makes it look like some are larger than the others, but they’re all the same size.

Mom Update:
Mom sounded okay when I talked to her. She was able to eat the meatloaf the other night, though it was one of those not bad but not great situations. Her new normal, basically. She had several visitors today: my aunt and uncle in the morning, the Hospice minister, and her BFF in the afternoon. She said it was nice, but that it did tucker her out. That’s worrisome.

Heated Rivalry: nothing but some heartburn, baby by SirMxALotts
Jan. 24th, 2026 07:09 pmFandom: Game Changers series
Characters/Pairings: Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov
Rating: Explicit
Length: 4639
Content Notes: Discussion of unplanned pregnancy and of abortion as a treatment option. Brief mention of a tapeworm analogy.
Creator Links: SirMxALotts on AO3
Themes: Crack treated seriously, AU, Canon LGBTQ+ characters, Mpreg, Established relationship
Summary: Most people in Shane’s position would call a doctor after two positive tests, but Shane isn't most people, so instead of doing that, he takes 17 tests over the course of two days.
Final result: 16 positive, one negative.
Reccer's Notes: A classic crack trope this time: Mpreg. The reason why a man could become pregnant in this AU isn't given, nor why Shane did nothing to prevent it (or didn't expect it), but it has happened so he faces a choice. This is where the "taken seriously" part comes in, as it's the same difficult choice any woman faces with an unplanned pregnancy. Rather than an unrealistic tropey outcome, Shane (after ignoring the whole problem for a while) finally talks to Ilya about it and makes his decision. I enjoyed the realism and the way Ilya was supportive without trying to persuade Shane one way or the other. We don't see the final outcome, but the story covers enough so that we know Shane's decision.

MASH ficlet: It Helps, Though
Jan. 23rd, 2026 11:29 pmWritten for
threesentenceficathon , for the prompt, MASH (TV), Hawkeye & Trapper, You don’t have to be crazy to work here. We’ll train you.
Title: It Helps, Though
Fandom: MASH
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: Teen
Characters: Hawkeye, Trapper, Frank, Radar, OC
Words: 178
Summary: The newest doctor to join the 4077th, gets quite an eye-opening introduction to the insanity.
IT HELPS, THOUGH
The first real introduction to the 4077th that newly assigned Captain Drew Weatherly experienced had been an eye-opener, when, in the course of showing him around, Corporal O’Reilly (apparently nicknamed ‘Radar’) had led him to a tent with a sign that read ‘The Swamp,’ and opened the door to a scene Drew was completely unprepared for; a man was sitting on one of the cots with a bedpan on his head, wrapped in a straightjacket, and connected to the cot with a dog leash, while two others sat on cots opposite, sipping from what looked like martini glasses… yeah, there were definitely olives in them.
Drew must have made some kind of startled noise without realizing it, because the curly-headed one spoke up, “That’ll be the last time Frank breaks our still,” he proclaimed, and the two men nodded exaggeratedly at each other.
“Not to worry, we have the training manual around here somewhere,” the dark-haired man said, riffling through a stack of nudie magazines on a rickety table, “You’ll be one of us in no time.”

Shingles vaccine
Jan. 23rd, 2026 05:07 pmSo I got jabbed Wednesday afternoon and the guy warned me the side effects would be bad, like notably worse than a covid jab. He said to expect to feel awful for 48-72 hours. And at 48 hours, I had a fever of 100F, a painful, itchy arm, no energy, and sniffles. (Though the sniffles might be allergies.) All of this is on the information sheet. And the second jab will be in 2-6 months. Happily, it was free at my pharmacy, though it would cost $57 at my clinic. (Weird.)
I'm so tired.
I hope y'all are doing well. Stay safe in the frigid cold. We're due at least a quarter inch of ice tomorrow. :(((

Lead Paint on Vintage Corelle Dishes - edited after posting
Jan. 23rd, 2026 04:58 pmMSN report here, from last year. I just learned this today. If I can stop anyone else from being exposed, it's worth a reblog.
The dishes in question are basically ubiquitous in kitchens I have known and loved, so that's not great.
ETA:
Okay, now I'm just confused. The lead levels are both a) high and b) technically legal, and it may not be leaching in any case due to the processes used. I hate living in an era where I don't know which of the seven million articles titled essentially the same thing are bullshit, and which are trustworthy. I figured MSN might fact-check, but apparently Corelle has never issued a recall per se, just a "Okay, we guess you might as well buy new stuff, because it's true there's lead in the old stuff." This info from this article.
