London's bid to host Wikimania 2006 was unsuccessful - mainly because of the expense involved and possibly the JANET issue. I think we will need to take funding seriously if we are to put in a decent bid for Wikimania 2007 (which would probably be in Europe anyway). So here's getting the ball rolling... From talking with quite a few people, there seems to be some momentum towards another bid (which would need to be done soon). We should start planning (ie ringing potential locations and working out details) soon. Cormaggio @ 13:46, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Even if this is not feasible for 2007, we can push it on to 2008 :-) Cormaggio @ 08:37, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Details and requirements are at Wikimania 2007. Cormaggio @ 15:35, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Collaborations / funding opportunities

NB: This is absolutely key

Other points to consider

Possible locations (brief description - with potential benefits)

  • (East) London (see Wikimania 2006/London)
    • East London regeneration schemes (for example Leaside Regeneration)
    • The big banks and others in Canary Wharf. HSBC (World HQ), Credit Suisse First Boston, and McGraw-Hill
    • Stewards: one possibility is to team up with "Tower Hamlets Summer University"
  • Reading (see Wikimania 2006/UK bid#Reading)
    • Local regeneration schemes
  • Manchester (see Wikimania 2006/UK bid#Manchester)
    • Local regeneration schemes
  • One of the larger Oxford University colleges could well be highly suitable, as they have accomodation for typically up to 400 people on-site, plus LTs and seminar rooms. I've just finished a course there, and they spend the summer hiring the colleges out to conferences. I'm sure they could provide Internet too - Oxford is swimming in money and I'm sure they have alternatives to JANET conference-goers could use. Dan100 12:35, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
