Eleanor comes in and goes out like complicated tides cycling between her two houses, and school. As she flows past, her passage picks up things and deposits them elsewhere in slow predictable patterns. Spoons and forks get packed in lunchbags at the morning house, but unpacked in the evening house. Thick coats are donned for the chilly way to school at one house and doffed in the warmer afternoon at the other. The erosion of forks and deposition of coats gently carve the curved lines of one winding river that connects all the parts of her family.

There's a constellation made of lines whose endpoints are salty little falling stars. The lines trace from John Lennon's death, to the heartbreak of his longtime friend Jimmy Iovine, to Jimmy's protégé Stevie Nicks unable to console him, to her song Edge of Seventeen about that, and to me staring out my kitchen window, alone, while the song plays.

Some folks are working on a project to write poems in April, and while I’m not sure I’m all the way there for 30 whole poems, I’m going to try writing down ‘sketches of poems’. Think of them charcoal on gray paper, casual.

OK, so many of you may know, or know of, the legendary "Paul", the real estate buyers' agent who helped a number of local folks buy their houses. I've met him, and he's great. And since I am now in the market for a house, and thinking a buyer's agent sounds good, I called him. I got his voicemail, and left my name and phone number. And as I did this, I felt a little guilty, because I know that for years my sister has been casually pestering me to use HER real estate agent, but whatever, I can only choose one, and I've met Paul myself and really liked him.

So a bit later, Paul calls me back, and starts with "Is this Mark? Mark {LASTNAME}? You know, I've only heard the name {LASTNAME} one time before today. I had a client a while back who I helped buy a place in Cambridge. 'Sue {LASTNAME}', except she spelled it S I O U X...." And yeeeeep... that's my sister!

NOW I KNOW WHY MY SISTER WAS PESTERING ME TO USE HER AGENT: IT'S PAUL!

Small, awesome, world!

Number of days between signing up for dreamwidth and starting to look into the developer docs because there are some features I think I’d like to help add: 2.

Luckily for all parties involved, there are a number of hurdles between this impulse and contributed code, e.g. I don’t really know the language that most of dreamwidth is written in, I haven’t gotten my bearings on this large complicated code base, I’m not sure how to implement what I want, and someone else is almost certainly already well along on implementing the idea or two that popped into my head on day T+1.

But thanks to the ever-awesome [profile] momijizakamori , I now know where the discussion is taking place, e.g., https://dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/200615.html

Oh, and what features, you ask? Basically any combination of pieces that allows me to get push-notifications on my phone in a somewhat timely fashion when (1) someone leaves a comment that would show up in my inbox, or (2) someone in a chosen friend group (or however we say that now) makes a new posting. Oh, and I want these things to happen without me writing an external “poller” that constantly keeps checking. The core code already knows; now I just need it to share the news as it happens. Webhooks, RSS(+IFTTT), something.

This is my “Hippie Snare” (10’x10’), now laying down in a little snow.

Footloose!

Footloose was released in February, 1984... 34 years ago. I remember seeing it in the theatre when it came out, AND buying the soundtrack on cassette AND playing it nonstop AND dancing around. The theme song is great, but maybe I liked “Holding Out For A Hero” more! And I still like “The Girl Gets Around”. Good stuff, especially for 1984, maybe? I think given the timing, I might have seen it in the movie theatre with Sianna. Maybe. Not sure about that. We saw a ton of movies together back then.

Ok so things I don’t know how to do yet: embed a YouTube video, like
https://youtu.be/bWcASV2sey0

Or probably more importantly, how to upload an image from my iPhone camera roll and embed that here. Hrm. Image hosting. I faintly remember separate image hosting... something about images on one server and HTML on another? #5991809

Here's my favorite riddle:

Q. What do you sit on, sleep on, and brush your teeth with?
