Starting to self-host again. This #GoToSocial is running on my new NAS/Server.
When I started in IT, I had a small server running in the closet for storage and a Call of Duty 4/Minecraft server. Those were fun times until my HDD crashed and I lost a lot of photos. I stopped self-hosting and just made local backups.
Over the years, I moved more and more to the cloud (Google), where everything digital was managed by them (mail, calendar, contacts, notes, files, photos, 2FA). That felt weird because I love Linux, servers and open source, and now everything digital of mine was hosted by a closed-source cloud provider.
So I wanted to go back to self-hosting and bought a DXP4800 Plus with 2x NVMe and 2x HDD and installed openSUSE Leap. This time, before setting up any services, I created a daily backup script and am backing up my backups. (I really like this simple backup script; maybe I'll write something about my strategy later).
For now, I'm having a lot of fun researching, configuring, and coding my new NAS/Server to be as digitally self-reliant as possible.
