Burley 61, Twin Falls 48
TWIN FALLS — When the Bobcats beat the Lady Bruins 46-44 on Jan. 8, Twin Falls led 25-18 at halftime and Burley rallied late for the win.
In the rematch, the Bobcats came out with more energy and were in control most of the way. Burley only trailed after the game's first bucket.
“Last time we didn’t get as many transition points,” Burley head coach Nicole Baker told the Times-News. “Today we were really able to get out and run, which is kind of what our forte is so I thought we did a better job at that and I just think we were a little more connected on defense and I think we did a better job of making things hard for Twin on the offensive end.”
Adalynn Olmos poured in 16 points to lead the Bobcats, while Paisley Beck chipped in 14 and Ruby Taylor 10.
Hailee Norris led the Lady Bruins with 16 points and Jasmine Morris finished with 14.
After Norris’s second chance bucket to start the game, Burley knocked down 3-pointers on three straight possessions and led the rest of the way. Twin Falls cut the lead to 14-13 with 5:46 left in the second quarter, but the Bobcats closed the first half on a 17-4 run.
The Lady Bruins never got closer than 11 points in the second half. Any time it looked like Twin Falls was about to go on a run, Burley answered with a bucket or got in passing lanes and disrupted its opponent’s flow on offense.
“I feel like when we get good defensive stops, that allows us to get out and push in transition.” Baker said. “And so we were doing that and we were finding each other, finding the hot hand. We had lots of girls that were stepping up and knocking down shots.
It was a tightly officiated game as well as the teams combined to shoot 48 free throws. The Bobcats capitalized a bit better than Twin Falls at the foul line, knocking down 20 of 26 free throws while the Lady Bruins hit just 15 of 22.
Burley has won five of its past seven games after suffering its first stumbling block with a three-game losing streak around the holidays. Burley was 8-0 before those losses.
“We just have gotten more and more comfortable playing with each other and playing in the system,” Baker said. “And just really bought into what we’re trying to do together.”
Burley (13-5 overall, 3-3 Great Basin Conference) will visit Canyon Ridge at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Twin Falls (3-14 overall, 1-4 Great Basin Conference) will visit Minico at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
