What Works Clearinghouse study ID
editOriginally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Authority control
Motivation
editThe motivation for this property proposal is to apply the WWC identifier to academic papers so that they would be better integrated into the WikiCite project for profiling scholarly articles. The better integration will include adding more of the related identifier ERIC publication ID (P7409) to papers, as well as the routine WikiCite development workflows including author disambiguation of author name string (P2093) tags to author (P50) and topic tagging of academic papers with main subject (P921).
The United States government organization Institute of Education Sciences (Q6040253) provides What Works Clearinghouse (Q100742597) as a database indexing educational research. This database is related to another United States government database, Education Resources Information Center (Q2915193), for which Wikidata already has property ERIC publication ID (P7409).
ERIC has 1.6 million items indexed, but currently, Wikidata only has about 100 of those. I am not sure how many items there are in WhatWorksClearinghouse, but it’s on the order of tens of thousands, and most of those are in ERIC. ERIC indexes every kind of education publication, while WhatWorksClearinghouse tries to index those papers which meet certain standards so that non-researchers at schools are more likely to be able to use the results of such studies as the basis for designing education programs. Connecting these collections in Wikidata makes content in both databases more accessible and encourages further Wikidata curation.
