Scope
editI originally proposed this property for court and tribunal cases, but I now think it can be used for the official citation of statutes and regulations. So, in the constraints I allowed "instance of" any subclass of law (Q7748). If I'm over-reaching the scope of this property, we can restrict it to judicial decisions. --Arctic.gnome (talk) 08:59, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
- I changed the label to make sure that the property is used to describe the citation that corresponds to a legal document, and not to cite the document. As long as it can be sourced, I don't think there is any problem in stretching the property to other legal texts. Please, also note that when the law is actually cited, most of the time we already can compose a legal citation from the information provided.--Micru (talk) 09:55, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
Legal citation for UK legislation
editI'm trying to add this property to Q1757778 (Titles Deprivation Act 1917) with a value of 7 & 8 Geo. 5 c. 47
but, despite adding act of Parliament and Act of Parliament to the classes in the type constraint (probably redundantly), I'm being told that it's a malformed input.
I've not done anything this complicated on Wikidata before; what's the probably-obvious thing that I'm doing wrong? :)
Distinct values issue
editRunning across an interesting problem with the distinct values constraint on this property. Promotion of Bantu Self-government Act, 1959 (Q1446059) and Government Savings Certificates Act, 1959 (Q94345488) both have the value "Act No. 46 of 1959". One of them is a South African act of parliament and the other is an Indian act of parliament. I think that citation values should only be required to be distinct within a jurisdiction; that is to say it is the combination of this property and applies to jurisdiction (P1001) that need to be unique. Is it possible to modify the constraint accordingly? - Htonl (talk) 19:39, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
