The Serpent
(2021)

Binged it one day- just an Awesome show to start 2021
What a compelling series!! But I'll keep it real SIMPLE - it's excellent! The cinematography, directing, acting, story-telling - all excellent. One of the best crime shows I've watched in the last few years and despite what is a very disturbing set of events - the colourful visuals will leave you wanting to go to South East Asia.

If I had to be a little critical of one thing is that I would have maybe gone into more character depth of this Charles Sobhraj - as I think they portrayed him well as a sociopath but they simply scratched the surface when it comes to understanding what made him the way he was. At the same time, he doesn't really deserve such an ending, an explanation for who he is. The mini-series is based on true events and one should keep in mind that this type of notoriety perhaps undermines the little justice the victims received. So that said, they probably made the right call and you should give the series a watch.

(2019)

Strong plot- very weak script- be sceptical of the good reviews.
I watched all 6 episodes but watched the last 4 in the hope that that the sum would be better than its parts. unfortunately, it wasn't. I can imagine some people working on this show will be a bit disappointed by the final cut as it was often an awkward watch. Some of the scenes felt cringe and 'amateurish. A combination of sub-par acting from Molly Windsor, who despite her talent never got to grips with her role and below average script-writing. Perhaps, what made the whole show disappointing was even though that main characters played forensic scientists the evidence in the end didn't quite add up from a rational or technical standpoint. In addition, the impulsive scientist is a oxymoronic take that just didn't work well here... and yet it felt like a lot of the issues with this show was due to production being rushed. A missed opportunity here but hoping for better next time.

I rushed to read the reviews after I finished this show and was really surprised by some of the glowing reviews. I do suspect these might be trolls or biased friends and family members of the cast...

Equally, in response to other reviews I've seen, I don't think this crime show was bad because it had women playing scientists and there was a deliberate effort to have a more diverse and inclusive cast...(this effort was probably one of the biggest +'s about this show)... the plot was just much stronger than the actual script - and that was probably it's fatal flaw.

Lets try again - maybe with the Glaswegian murder/shooting case they mention...

Home Before Dark
(2020)

This show belongs in the Kids Section if Apple TV has one. Also a flashback to "veronica mars".
Before I justify my low rating, I will admit that as a child I would have quite possibly enjoyed this show.

Unfortnately, from the viewing lens of an adult, the show's script is poor and lacks any form of subtlety. The consequence is that too many of the scenes feel forced and unnatural. Too much attention is given to demonstrating Heide's strong character and willfulness rather than developing any sense of intrigue or mystery around the victim. Also, the portrayal of middle school characters is not in keeping with modern day children and the values they've been taught. Perhaps, the writers relied too much on their own childhood experiences.

Finally, the most disturbing part of this show is the relationship the daughter, Heide, has with her father. Now, this might be nit-picking or even controversial but she acts more like his wife than his daughter. The boundaries in that relationship just seems a little off...

This show could easily have a worst rating but I gave it the benefit of the doubt because during my childhood, I enjoyed a very FAMILIAR show called Veronica Mars.

The Sinner: Part VIII
(2020)
Episode 8, Season 3

Worst season and finale of the lot.
Just awful, awful , awful... (on par with the last season of criminal minds, that's how bad it is).

This finale wrapped up a travesty of a season.

I fully expect this show to be cancelled as it should be.

Don't waste your time with season 3!
First two seasons had its moments but season 3 is barely watchable. The detective, Ambrose, seems to get more annoying each episode goes by. And Prefers to play therapist rather than detective. Annoyingly, he also answers to no one and has a hypercritical ethical code. Matt Boomer is decent as the antagonist you can empathise with but script and director let him down badly. The best scene in season 3 is the one that never even was... and that's only because it was "shocking" and woke you up from the snoozefest of the writing. If you're wondering what to watch next: give this a pass and go watch Bosch on amazon prime. You won't regret it unlike this show.

Le jeu
(2018)

Throughly captivating!! The first of many remakes- one hopes
So I found out after watching this French film that it is a remake of the an Italian film; Perfect Strangers - English title. So while I can't really assess the movie based on how its been remade into a French version, I can say I loved the script, the plot and the acting. It is simple films like these which show you that you don't need an outrageous movie budget to thoroughly captivate an audience. I'm still feeling 'giddy' from watching it!! Finally, Apologies if this comes off somewhat pretentious but there is a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, tender is the night, that provides the perfect synopsis for this movie; "I want to give a really BAD party. I mean it. I want to give a party where there's a brawl and seductions and people going home with their feelings hurt and women passed out in the cabinet de toilette. You wait and see." I choose to think if Dick Diver (I.e. Scott Fitzgerald) had to throw a party in this day and age, he would throw the party portrayed in this movie. (But perhaps with a bit more alcohol involved...)
