Black Lives Matter. Blindspotting (2018) is a drama film directed by Carlos López Estrada. It was written and produced by its two lead actors: Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. You may know Daveed from Hamilton.
Blindspotting tells the story of Collin Hoskins, a convicted felon who is struggling to finish the last three days of his probation. Collin, along with his short-tempered best friend Miles, works for a moving company located in California. One night whilst waiting at a red light, Collin witnesses a white police officer gun down a black civilian. Collin is haunted by the incident, he begins to have nightmares and experiences hallucinations.
At the same time, Miles becomes distraught by the gentrification of Oakland, and a resulting sense of loss of identity, home, and belonging.
Both Diggs and Casal were an absolute delight to watch in this movie. Daveed Diggs gives the performance of his career here and it really shows how great of an actor he is. The ending was so tense, I felt like the movie had its hands around my throat and I was just waiting for it to let go and let me breathe again. When it finally did, I sat in silence for a good five minutes just thinking about this movie and how true to life it is.
With everything that's going on in the real world recently, this movie is VERY relatable and unfortunately, heartbreaking.
I recommend everybody to go and watch Blindspotting. It's on Netflix!
