Maratonci trce pocasni krug
(1982)

Not the very best of Serbian cinema, but entertaining
Coming from Croatia, I am very much familiar with Serbian cinema. Serbian humor is very much appreciated throughout the former Yugoslavian republics, and this movie is one of the prime examples of it. For those of you not familiar with it, well you're missing on a lot. Unfortunately, a lot of it depends on language so if you're not acquainted with Serbian language and culture, a lot of the jokes will not seem so funny. What is even more disappointing for an average European or American viewer, not being properly introduced to a specific laid - back Balkan mentality can also constitute a huge obstacle in understanding many nuances and sides of this and many more movies, filmed throughout the Balkan peninsula. Well, what can you do? I guess that's life. Somebody gets to live in a secure and prosperous geographical region, while somebody else gets to live in a war zone for hundreds of years. Hey, at least you get to have a specific sense of humor. That sure makes it right, doesn't it? Its like with the African Americans. They have been slaves for 300 years, but they have completely taken over the NBA in the last couple of years. See how God takes care of everyone? Lets get back to the movie ( another example of Balkan mentality is inability to focus on what you are doing ). It tells the story of an interesting, all - male family of morticians ( the oldest member of the family is 150 years old ). The youngest family member is somewhat on a crossroad, since he feels neglected and wants to take his part of the company and marry a local mobsters daughter. This mobster is actually a sick bastard who provides the family with coffins. You see, all they do is dig out the old used coffins and sell them as new ones. It is the way their company "operates", but recently they invested in a brand new cremation unit they are dying to test... What bothered me with this movie is that many scenes felt a bit too obvious, something which many people seem to neglect. Sometimes I had the impression that the writer forced some situations because he needed room for one or two jokes he came up with and wanted to use them no matter what. One of those situations is at the very beginning of the movie, when the youngest mortician measures a dead man and mentions that the man now has an extra measure. He wants to see how "long" the man is ( instead of how tall ) in order to "produce" a fitting coffin. Bogdan Diklic is a great actor, but somehow i felt that this scene was so obviously set up like this just because the writer wanted to say that we shouldn't talk of dead people as being tall but as being "long". The ending is also a bit predictable. Diklic's rage piles up to that point and early on in the movie it becomes obvious that the only possible way for this movie to end is a carnage. Nevertheless, you should still be able to enjoy it since it is abundant in amazing jokes and interesting comedic situations. As far as I know, the script is based on a theater script written by the same author, and this is in fact pretty much evident during the movie, which is also a downside if you ask me. Still, it is an entertaining movie, but if you are really interested in Serbian or Balkan cinema at it's best you should check out some of Emir Kusturica's work.

The Big Bang Theory
(2007)

Predictable, but enjoyable
Coming up with an original sitcom idea is definitely a huge challenge. TBBT presents us a pretty much recycled idea, with a new glare. I guess you could compare it to an interesting song cover. No matter how pleasing, it still is in its essence something we'we seen or heard before. And I mean long before. A couple of awkward guys forced to make contact with a beautiful woman must be one of the most used comedic situations ever. Forming another group like this and adding a bunch of science terms in order to further establish the awkwardness of the characters themselves is a bit disturbing because it in fact once again demonstrates what we'we always known: in a world we live in being smart makes you "socially challenged". From what I have figured out the main character should have been Leonard, but since Sheldon proved to be much more interesting, the show's focus translated to him. You can pretty much consider it a logical choice, since Sheldon is in fact one of the most interesting characters in sitcoms ever. Highly intelligent, but socially unpleasant characters have always been potentially very popular. Currently, two of the most dominating TV characters possess this kind of appeal: Gregory House and Sheldon Cooper, each with his own extra attractiveness. Sheldon is even crazier than House, but somehow it doesn't make him less plausible for the majority of the viewers. Other characters in the show are not that great, but simply serve as a supporting cast for Sheldons antics. In fact, I have met people who actually believe the shows title is "Sheldon". This striking difference between the level of the popularity of main characters is something the Friend's creators successively avoided. Unfortunately, TBBT mostly proves to be a one man show, with Sheldon displaying every possible negative quality that an average person believes brilliant physicists posses, while the rest of the crew simply deliver clichéd sentences, designed to provoke Sheldons not so unique madness. Not to be mistaken, not even him is something we might call "an original character" but he's entertaining enough to make me indifferent to this problem. Well, since most of the people don't even think this is a problem, the shows success is quite predictable, as most of the things concerning this sitcom. Nevertheless, you should still be able to enjoy it, if you find a way to cope with it's lack of originality. Unfortunately, lack of originality is one of the biggest problems in the entertainment industry at the moment, while the world of science and technology that Sheldon and his colleagues inhabit is exactly the opposite. If we can't have both, I guess this is for the better. Real Sheldons out there, please don't get insulted by certain show's premises, and keep up with the work, so that the rest of us could laugh at the stereotypical portrayals of you as much as we did till now. OK, we know you're not insane, but would you let our stupid minds be entertained with the same kind of stereotypes you had to live with for years?

House M.D.: Unwritten
(2010)
Episode 3, Season 7

House treats one of his favorite authors, a suicidal lady who happens to write Twilight- like corny novels
Like many other reviewers, I too am a bit bored with Season 7. Making House and Cuddy lovers certainly proved to be an incredible task. I believe the writers did their best, but somehow I never trusted those two as a couple. In this particular episode, the team deals with a case that occupies House personally since the patient is his favorite novelist, a suicidal writer of corny novels about a teenage detective, who in fact happens to be her dead son. I somehow feel that the writers obsessively try to make House weird and sarcastic as much as they can, since they are aware of the fact that these character traits constitute much of characters appeal. Up to this point, it has become some kind of a cat and mouse game between the writers and the audience, or at least it seems the writers believe so. Hey, if we don't come up with excessive amounts of House's weirdness in each episode of each season, people are not going to put up with the shows occasional lack of pace! Here they made him a corny novels fan, in a newest attempt to shock us by making House doing, saying or liking exactly the opposite of what everyone expected him to. Usually you would expect House to mock literature like this, right? You would probably expect him to make some sarcastic comments concerning a young patient impressed with this kind of literature. Well, guess what? You got it wrong! He is obviously crazier than you could ever imagine. In fact he doesn't dismiss idiotic fans such as Twilight's, he is one of them. Of course I don't expect House to quit with sarcasm and irony. In fact, I too am attracted to him for these reasons, but I noticed it somehow became its own purpose. Beside providing a safe retreat for confused or tired writers, of course. Well, I still believe this show has much to say, House is undoubtedly one of the most interesting characters in TV history, but season 7 in general is a bit slow. This particular episode is no different, although it is still worth watching. Oh, and I miss Thirteen...
