Man of the West
(1958)

Well done western - authentic and terrifying in violence
Well done western - authentic and terrifying in violence.

It is great character acting by all involved. How wonderful to see a strong cast of 10 all perform with great character work.

The scenes allow you to feel the beauty and barrenness of the Western landscape. The landscape is unadulterated and pure.

You realize how little resources there were out in the west. And few options if you ran into bad people, or a train left you by the wayside. You're at the mercy of the land, and in this case, a ramshackle house that offers shelter and food-- but violence. There was no other choice.

The writing is tight and the plot clearly laid out. A now-good outlaw stumbles into his old family of violent outlaws and is forced into their violence and next robbery. Not all follows that line seamlessly, and we are on edge the whole time.

The violence, and the threat of violence, are terrifying. It's a great example of a well done Western. I won't see again due to the always present violence.

For the audience to care more, we need a little more history on Julie London's character and Link- Gary Cooper. However, keeping the storyline moving forward, and not on their pasts, is effective.

The Lion
(1962)

Unexpected Thoughtful Story
It's an unexpected thoughtful story. A young child brilliantly and vibrantly played by Pamela, shows a child actress in command of adult training. You'll want to see the movie just for her manifestation of the role.

The landscape was beautiful and astounding to see.

It was horrific to see certain jeep scenes disturbing the animals. It gave us a good taste of the people who disrupt such pristine nature and how it must be protected.

A simple love story to follow that doesn't get complicated. But I would have liked to learn more about Holden and Capucine character when they were married and some more backstory. It would add depth, interest and increase our attachment to their characters. It was harder to believe the Capuchine Howard marriage, but we don't know perhaps there were happier times.

While this story revolves around the reuniting of a family and saving a child becoming obsessed with a lion and living in wildlife, there were disturbing elements that made it a bit darker than originally thought. The girl repeatedly talked about how she can make her lion kill, and she does. A side plot of a tribal elder left to die who Holden cares for, kills another tribe member and resumes his head role. There is a lot to unpack about a girl so entrenched in wild nature who will now live in New York, albeit on a farm.

It's a solid movie. William Holden is always a joy to see. The words are only 20% of his acting. He knows how to turn his body, his head at the right time. He sits back and settles in before delivering dialogue. He has pauses, cadences, certain looks that help fully realize the character, bring aliveness and nuance to the dialogue. Watch just for this. He's remarkable. I rewound several scenes just to watch how he handled the dialogue, facial expressions, body movement and pacing. Remarkable instincts.

A good movie with incredible landscapes. An interesting but not fully developed story. We'd need a prequel and a sequel to round it out.

The 7th Dawn
(1964)

Intriguing movie with clear storyline - Great character development and discussion of loyalty amongst friends, marriage, war buddies, ideologies, values.
This movie was excellently done. The movie score was tremendous and matched the history, landscape and climate of the time, post war, WWII.

William Holden and Capuchine had a very believable and real relatioship. The intrigue is fascinating with lots of twists and turns, but also credible. A clear story line -- but --explores the loyalty, commitment, betrayal between friends, lover partners, ideologies, ways of thinking, values and more.

Those themes give you so much to think about -- being loyal to a person, to love, to ideology, to a friendship, to a country? There are so many ways to think about love and loyalty.

William Holden -- excellent role for him, and he showed true feeling and facial expression for a man who did not have a lot of feeling.

Capuchin -- a Joan of Arc with clear eyesight and heart. Very strong, direct with a heart. York doesn't seem a good fit and not mature enough as an actress to play this role.

Ng was calm, stoic and showed what truth and loyalty meant to him.

Great Malay background and authentic jungle; excellent music.

Born Yesterday
(1950)

A solid movie - is it less compelling over time?
To really understand this we'd need to know more about the time. Perhaps women weren't educated to take a stand, voice an opinion and learn. Then this is super important movie, based in 1950!

Judy Holliday was a smash hit with this on the Broadway stage. So she took it to film. She does a great job- very nuanced and a good transformation. She's a very good actor. But I can't quite get as compelled by Judy Holliday as I am by Hepburns, Lauren Bacall and others. Holliday is a great actress but doesn't quite have that special spark.

William Holden is always a dream to watch. He's so compelling.

But somehow I don't believe Judy Holliday character and the junkyard millionaire are attracted and compatible, and I don't believe the Holden character and Judy Holliday character are compatible or sparked. Perhaps William Holden is still too intellectual for her. He still seems too advanced to fall for her.

I'm watching it 74 years later. It's solid but needs some improvements. The junk yard millionaire is grating and one note. There's hardly any variance. It's hard to take!

Judy Holliday's voice is hard to understand and at a high pitch that is tough. As she gets smarter you wish her voice did too.

This movie was directed by the amazing Cukor. Holliday won the academy award for it. There must have been some reason we don't understand as she won over Betty Davis/all about eve and Sunset boulevard Gloria Swanson? I'll need to do some research here.

Billy Holliday is an accomplished actress. She delivers quality work. But somehow it's not award winning to me.

We need a scruffier person than Holden here, as much as I like watching him. It just seems too high level for the role.

A good solid move and I'd see one more time. Watched with mom and dad Thursday, September 19, 2024. They thought it was ok to watch once. The voices grated for them too.

Bells Are Ringing
(1960)

An enjoyable musical but didn't quite work. Some great scenes!
I hand seen Judy Holiday so I wanted to give this one a try!

It's a solid heartfelt musical. I like the song "Just in Time". It's so heartfelt and with the right duet and harmony it's just so smooth and a dream! My dad was singing along with them!

The plot is about a woman at a switchboard who helps people. In an individual way, all the three people she helps gets them better lives. The plot ends up that the three people all work together to make fantastic production and show, and fulfilling everyone's dreams.

That should have been the main story line. One could have milled each person's unique story line and made it meaningful. Instead they were quickly glossed over. We didn't understand why she was helping them. We needed to see her develop a very soft, sweet and sincere heart. Then we would have understood she just loved people and wanted to help. We would have looked forward to each of her engagements and loved the fact that she was helping people realize their dreams.

But one of the people, played by Dean Martin, became her love interest. It developed too quickly. He's proclaiming love after spending 3 hours together.

So these two major story lines cross over each other and compete with each other. It's too much. The writing is pressed, compacted, moving too quickly and unclear. They are trying to pack in too much. Choose one story line or one main story line and make that clear.

There were some beautiful Beautiful scenes.

I loved the dancing in the park with "Just in Time" It was smooth and flowing. All the park gatherers became audience. It was magical. It wasn't about super talented dancing or fancy. It was a smooth sweet dance and singing from the heart.

I also loved the party! A fascinating glamorous party giving a direct eye into Hollywood! The songs were smart and insightful. The dresses were glamorous and incredible! So many beautiful lavish designs, shimmery colors and flowing, abundant lines. All strapless and long. Flowing gowns.... Another era. The movie was worth it for that. It as breathtaking!

I recommend this as a 6.5. It's solid but we would only watch once. The story lines was too much and about convoluted. Judy and Dean were just ok, but neither seemed that compelling. We'd rather watch other actresses and actors. They also did not have chemistry together. On set, Judy was disturbed by Dean's careless attitude and low work ethic.

I gave it a 7 as there are valuable parts to experience which made it most memorable. We wouldn't watch it again. Watched with my parents Sunday, September 15th, 2024.

She talented in basic singing, dancing and acting.

Brigadoon
(1954)

A sold movie with some surprises.
Gene Kelly is always moving with his talents- he's got the romantic lead down and with dancing. It's always a joy to watch.

The surprise comes with Van Johnson. We're used to seeing him in more commanding roles, military and leadership. He's a strong persona don at times hard or cynical. Here is a foil to Kelly. And he dances so very well! Who wants to go up against Kelly? But he maintains and also has his own style. It's a pleasure to see their duos!

The movie is a time jump that all makes us think about time jumps in our lives.

We appreciate the romantic touches with glances. Heart moving, a touch of a hand. It doesn't need to be more and it's so moving and communicated the power of the moment.

I watched with my parents. We liked it very much.

Pillow Talk
(1959)

Beautifully written comedic story! Don't miss
Beautifully written comedic story! Don't miss

You've got two great actors with special chemistry- Doris Day and Rock Hudson. They go on to make more movies together.

The story line is so sharp and complete. It's clear, funny and with loads of funny twists.

Supporting character Tiny Randall is a dream of an actor. He should be mentioned more. He plays a hilarious 'best friend" of Doris Day and is also her interior design client. Watch Tony Randall almost steal the movie.

Super costumes of the period - Doris Day's beautiful skirts and sweaters.

There is so much fun banter. Great facial expression. Great physical movements and comedy.

The story and writing again rules here. There are sidebars that are very funny (the maternity doctor scene). And they all reinforce the main story line. Very funny.

Check out the scene of Rock carrying Doris Day thought out the city. So fun and determined!

Dad could follow the whole thing as he has memory issues. It's simple and pure and Mom, Dad and I had a great time watching it together!

The Bridge on the River Kwai
(1957)

Great sequencing, well laid out story that is captivating and semi historical.
Great sequencing, well laid out story that is captivating and semi historical.

I'll watch movies just for William Holden, and now Alex Guinness. Committed actors of excellence that make the movie.

It's sow well written and just flows. Great suspense. Interesting psychology story to see William Holden's character have to go back into war when he just wanted to check out and go home. He becomes one of the most pivotal figures and influencers in the war. .

The other characters are greatly needed. Joyce as the young recruit responsible for the final moment. Alec Guinness as both admired and questioned for his unrelenting commitment to principle, even if it killed others.

Principle comes up often here and it is great tomatoes post movie. When do you have to throw the rules out the door? When do you realize that the chaos of war is so bad, you have to scramble and fight to just survive, principle or no.

Engaging, well written well acted, and directed. A great movie to see, a classic. Superb performances. I'll go back to watch some of them.

Do investigate the history. It's based on some of this, but 100,000 people died making the railroads. I don't think it showed that loss and toil. This story has some history. But it's not true.

Watched with Dad, Mom, Will on Saturday night August 17, 2024.

An American in Paris
(1951)

A musical and dancing treasure with Gene Kelly!
A musical and dancing treasure with Gene Kelly!

Amazing, detailed stunning dancing. The costumes, the dance numbers 1-1 and larger sets are just beautiful. Gene Kelly as a dancer and an actor is amazing...

Leslie Caron's first movie. A lot of joy and spontaneity in her performance. It's lovely to bare her ballet background. She turned into a versatile actor.

You could watch Gene Kelly's dance moves again and again. Oscar Levant as his side kick is superb. Always a great pianist and an actor. He adds such musicality and depth.

It's great for adults and for children. It's timelesss.

Saw Saturday night with mom and dad.

The End of the Affair
(1955)

Solid and provocative movie
Handling tough issues of life if the heart and love of God. A consuming love for God.

All great character work. Superb writing by Graham Greene who lived this in his life.

Sarah (Deborah Kerr) was illuminated and a pure actress. She is amazing to watch. She committed to each word and is fully living the emotions. For that alone it's beautiful.

Van Johnson is a superb, steady actor. He's always going to produce great work.

I thought Deborah was miscast as someone having affairs and as kissing a soldier when Van Johnson saw her the first evening? In her own home and party and at the door? It seemed out of place. I also didn't believe that in less than 10 lines of dialogue they jump into bed. She seemed more upright. We also didn't get the chance to have them develop their relationship.

A greatly acted movie, well written and biographical to Graham Greene. It's about life if a person and love of God. It's thought provoking, and for me, how committed I am to God. Could I express and engage in it deeply?

In the Good Old Summertime
(1949)

Great movie and clear plot; kind, joyful, simple
Great movie and clear plot; kind, joyful, simple.

Judy Garland is an unbelievable talent. Both her singing, expressions and acting are top notch. I don't know as much about Van but he did very well in his role and a very strong lead. Something to watch how he led the movie and his relationship with her.

Van's voice sounds like a combination of James Stewart and Owen comedian guy.

Good character work by all the supporting characters.

And a treat! Buster Keaton in a fairly straightforward role, not overly comedic. Yet he has one time he stumbles down the stairs, and he's fluid and brilliant. A master of so many types of comedy and definitely physical.

Reminds me of Shop Around the Corner, but less arguing and more pleasant which was a relief.

A great movie you'll want to see again.

Some Like It Hot
(1959)

Classic Comedy with Multiple Allstar Actors and Resilient Ending
Classic Comedy with Multiple Allstar Actors and Resilient Ending

Yes Tony Curtis, Jack Lennon and Marilyn Monroe- all great actors. But there are others too they should not be overlooked!

George Raft- an impeccable actor and gangster. He was so believable, curt and dry. He was steel.

Joe E Brown. He almost steals the show at the end with well written and perfectly delivered lines. He's top notch. And it is so funny, leading to truthful comments about society. I was a bit in shock when I first headed those final lines! Risqué and true, for the time period. It also forecasted our future!

Tony Curtis mid Atlantic Cary Grant accent was something to study.

I would have liked to see Jerry Lewis in the role opposite Tony Curtis. They were friends and their energy would have bounced off each other. He was planned as first choice, but he didn't want to play or be typecast as a woman. A significant loss for him and the film. His powers of physical contortion and slapstick would have taken this to another level.

Marilyn is so unique, so charming and someone you just want to hug. Tony Curtis is multi level talented. George Raft is an icon-- and Joe E Brown is an icon. The supporting characters are just as important and interesting.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
(1988)

Great solid comedy with 3 Greats of comedy: Caine, Steve Martin, Glenn Headly
Great solid comedy with 3 Greats of comedy: Michael Caine, Steve Martin, Glenn Headly.

Great character work, clear plot and expert actors. A joy to watch. And it's so well written. It just flows and is so easy to follow and enjoy. Would love to see more with Steve Martin and Michael Caine! A great duo. They have a super rapport.

It was intention after the other, one upping each other which was so fun to see! It happened 10x.

I like that the different styles of the two scoundrels makes the movie great. They con in different ways! Great tag teaming and one upsmanship.

A loss with Glenn Headly, a super dramatic and comedic actress. Look up her other work and keep her spirit alive.

A classic comedy.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
(1982)

See It For Comedic Technique.
It's a brilliant movie from the perspective that Steve Martin and Carl Reiner write together, using old movies as the characters in the movies. We see interspersed clips from Maltese Falcon, and star greats such as Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney and Ingrid Bergman and Joan Crawford. Those are the actors/characters in the film.

Writing to these film noir excerpts, timing and then simulating the Steve Martin part of the scene that must look the same as the original 40sfilm, was executed well. That's not easy. It's worth it just for this technique. It's also fun to see the old 40s stars.

Actors Rachel Ward And Carl Reiner do a great job in the only other real roles.

Not easy to do, interesting, fun. But also some old comedy that doesn't always land today. Some if the plot was a little unclear. A lot going on with the real characters and a lot going in with existing within the 40s movies. .

Good to watch and learn. Steve Martin, and Carl Reiner-. So smart!

50 First Dates
(2004)

Solid romantic comedy
Great acting and interesting premise of a girl who must be reminded of what her life is - and a Aman wanting to help remind her. It's solid good comedy an d also heartfelt. The only thing is that it makes it too light what the impact of memory loss can be. You have to let that reality go. Not remembering is completing disorienting and alienating. So some discomfort there.

Sandler is very good about choosing his leading ladies. They work with well with him and he knows the importance of chemistry. A fun engaging movie that moves your heart. Light hearted.

Weee used to a lot of sloppy joke humor from Sandler and he plays it straight here. It's no surprise that he's a good dramatic actor, being the fine comedian he is.

High Society
(1956)

Loved this move and would see again. Such star power!
Loved this move and would see again. Such star power!

Amázing!!! Grace Kelly with her elegance. Her comedic drink routine for the journalists is hilarious. You have Bing Crosby and Cole Porter and frank Sinatra'. You watch just for that.

The plot seemed a bit far fetched--but then fun!

Just go with it and many twists and turns.

Not sure some of the relationship matchups but I wonder if they felt pressure to make everyone get married, just because that was the time period. Some seemed too contrived. Some if it felt forced and too quick or just didn't make sense. Still a very Fun romp with excellent music.

Also go Judy to see Grace Kelly. Her acting was good here, and her design outfits were stunning. That's even worth to it.

It's fun. Star players. Greasy music and a farcical plot. Enjoy to and I'll see it again!

The Apartment
(1960)

You'll want to see this. Great acting and writing.
You'll want to see this. Great acting and writing. Billy Wilder at his best. Excellent commentary on love, workplace, women's rights.

The writing is clear and tight. The character development is so very well dime. You get to know them so very well. You get a good lens into the limitations of work for women. The affairs at work-- all too common in the 50s and 60s and how they maneuvered them.

Jack Lemmon is not one of my favorite actors and he is too birch. He's just a great actor. Nuanced, real and you trust he is doing the right thing or will do the right thing.

Shirley McLaine is authentic and luminous.

Birth are good people but have strong failings, making them relatable.

Fred McMurray is a shock and he is such a good Lérida in real life. His understated nefariousness is chilling to watch. A great, underrated actor.

Work History It's enjoyable and amazing to watch a piece from 1960- and how much the workplace has changed! The work scene shows dozens of rows of desks and workers. What a change from 60 years later! Now in Silicon Valley workplaces look like living rooms and do comfy. It's. A bit of a shock and good to see how strict and uniform it is, to understand what it is was like to climb the corporate. Ladder.

It's not a comedy. It's a drama. Be prepared for some heavy issues, with some comedic moments. Excellent commentary on love, workplace, women's rights.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
(1936)

A great comedy with start actors
A great comedy with start actors! Jean Arthur has such a way!

Her genuine acting and voice tone are so unique. Sincere and velvety. You'd want to se this, just for her.

Gary Cooper is beyond gorgeous and plays the "unknowing" inheritor well.

They are a good pair.

Seeing a 1930s movie really shows you too the time period. So that alone is interesting.

There is sincerity, goodness and the importance of doing the right thing. The two twin sister are a delight, too. Watch the food character acting.

Highly recommended and you'll want to watch again. Also, good physical Humor too. There are many levels of humor.

Double Indemnity
(1944)

Superclassic and súper writing and direction
What an amazing noir. So many twists and turns.....the writing is tight and you can see how well it works. It's beautiful to see excellent writing in action!

Stanwyck is cool calm cold. Perfect fit. Fred McMurray is a very talented actor and will always carry the day. He delivers the dialogue all perfectly but I couldn't quite get that he was this dastardly insurance fellow. Too much of a leap for me and I feel he was miscast.

Many twist and turns to think about.

Robinson is a great actor with such depth.

Something you could watch multiple times and watch how well done it was. The direction and writing superb. Billy Wilder!

North by Northwest
(1959)

Stunning timeless movie.
You can't miss with this one!

A great mystery. Great suspense. Eve is a cool as can be. Cary and she are a perfect match.

Great, coolness under pressure acting. Multiple time they almost die and lots of twists and turns. Fun jump cuts and great chemistry.

Would be good to watch again.

Eve won an academy award on her first movie- Waterfront with Brando. A true star and still alive today, approaching 100.

Live his all the intrigue and rough capers are all In suits! No casual wear here.

Really great ups and downs, reunions and separations and a smart use jump cuts. Ends abruptly in a good way.

9 or 10. Classic, always!

To Catch a Thief
(1955)

A stunning, fun mystery with Grant and Kelly. So enjoyable!
A stunning, fun mystery with Grant and Kelly. So enjoyable!

You can watch this again and again because if the scenery, the costumes, winning characters. It's got a tight well written script.

Enjoy this caper amongst the Riviera. Many twists and turns intertwined with beautiful ksndscosyes, wardrobes and Grace Kelly.

Watch the suave ending. He pulls her hand towards him...... and then her final comment and final scene is with just one eye and part of his face. A strong, fun ending. Nice balance of qualities.

A good mention of the importance of women as well, even in 1955. It's a start.

Great movie!

American Underdog
(2021)

A good film; inspirational and practical about following your dream.
A good film; inspirational and practical about following your dream.

Not easy. Be 27 and your first time out in the field in the NFL.

A lot lot lot of setbacks.

And yet Warner succeeds in life and it's a testament to us all.

And so we should pursue as well. He had to go after her dreams thrift 5 levels of sweats. And he made it and made it significantly.

How to Marry a Millionaire
(1953)

Beautiful Comedic Film
Beautiful comic film

Just lovely with all the beautiful dresses, colors and layering. It's was beautiful just for that!

Marilyn Monroe is a sweetheart Timmerman singing to watch. Lauren BeCall is just good. Convincing and such a stunner. Betty Grable a great and fun actress.

A simple premise. Fun and light. And keeps it enjoyable and focused right on track. So funny that the guy who owns the aoartment ends up with one of the girls.

Part of the best of the movie is William Powell. Always elegant and a joy to watch. Here he brings groundededness and keeps the plot on track. You just trust him. He's an anchoe actor.

Song of the Thin Man
(1947)

Wonderful chemistry and banter in a 1947 movie
Wonderful chemistry and banter in a 1947 movie. Myrna Loy and William Powell take us through the solving of a case of murder.

Great banter, light jokes, some corny lines. It's all fun. Lovely to see period dresses, black and white and elegant dining and entertaining spots.

Great classical Music throughout, heightening the mystery. These classical sound tracks are a joy!

The only downside is that the plot was convoluted. It was hard to follow. The good news was that at last 5 people/ couples could have done it. Bit it was agree to follow. It shows you how far writing has come. Writing has become simpler and more elegant. Here it was just hard to pick up where we were in the 5 guilty possibilities storylines.

Still you can relax and just let them tell you. It's lovely down to earth fun. Powell and Loy are a delight.

The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing
(1955)

Great job by Joan Collins; Ray Milland is always a treat; Farley Grainger was a revelation.
Great actors here. Joan Collins did a beautiful job. It was supposed to be Marilyn Monroe. It seemed kind was a better fit.

Good acting always by Ray Milland, and their love seemed authentic but corrupted. It's not clear. Implement why she married granger character as he didn't provide enough calm, stability, peace. Granger did an excellent job being spoiled and unbridled and obsessed.

Some good twists and turns and Edie silly on the witness stand. Hard to imagine someone sort of defending your husband who created a murder f your favorite lover. And the turn of the mother in law was chilling.

The downside of this romantic story is that a lot of it is Hollywood washed. The Millard character didn't really love Joan's character. He was a huge womanizer. And di everyone was less caring, less invested, and it just made it all unsavory lives, although interesting.
