Bheja Fry
(2007)

Great Comedy
This is the best comedy I have seen after 'What About Bob'. I was laughing so loud that at one point I thought I was going to die. My wife came running from the kitchen to see what had happened to me.

Vinay Pathak did a wonderful job as innocent, good-hearted singer who is invited by Mr Goshal to make fun of him. Instead, his own fun is made by divine intervention.

They say God takes care of the innocent ones. Same thing happens with Mr Pathak here.

A must see movie if you are a lover of comedy movies. This movie contains no songs, no ishq-vishq, no villains, no action scenes and no special effects but still this movie is better than all those movies that contain all that. The movie runs only hour and a half. It's quick to the point comedy.

Badaltey Rishtey
(1978)

A great film about love, marriage and fidelity
Reena Roy gave an amazing performance in this movie. She looked absolutely beautiful and acted very well. In those days there was Reena Roy, Hema Malini, and Rekha. These were real beauties. Today there are half naked actresses and they are like this because they don't have beauty and substitute for beauty by exposing their skin. Rishi Kapoor, the born actor, as usual did a wonderful job. Jatinder's role was just normal. Nothing spectacular.

The movie is about how after marriage wife should be totally committed to her husband and all previous alliances, loves and relations should burn in the sacred fire at the time of marriage (in case of Hindus).

The music by Lakshmikant Pyarelal was absolutely melodious. Many movies have been made on this theme of three angle love till date but this was one of the original ones.

Billu
(2009)

Krishna Sudama Story
What a wonderful movie this was. The only drawback is the flashy songs of Sahir Khan (Shahrukh Khan). Irfan Khan performed so well in this movie that it leaves you stunned. Shahrukh Khan was his usual, nothing special. Lara Dutta did a good job in this movie.

The movie is very emotional. The last half an hour or so is very emotional. You can't escape from shedding tears. I think the movie should have stayed simple and all the flashy songs and dances should have been spared from the movie. They were nothing but distraction from the core story.

Billu (Irfan Khan) and Sahir Khan meeting should have been explored more. It would have been good for Shahrukh if he had played the role of Billu Barber and someone else should have played Sahir's role. Irfan Khan and Lara Dutta stole the show. the movie belongs to them.

Family: Ties of Blood
(2006)

A Great Movie
I have decided to not believe what famous movie critics say. Even though this movie did not get the best comments, this movie made my day. It got me thinking. What a false world this is.

What do you do when your most loved ones deceive you. It's said that no matter how often you feed milk to a snake, it can never be loyal and will bite when given a chance. Same way some people are such that they are never grateful. This movie is about how selfish people can be and how everyone is ultimately just thinking about oneself and working for oneself.

A brother dies inadvertently at the hands of a gangster. The surviving brother decides to take revenge. Through this process, we learn about the futility of this world. Nothing is real and no one is loyal to anyone.

Amitabh gave the performance of his life. The new actor Aryan gave a good performance. The actress who played the wife of Amitabh stole the show. Her role was small but she portrayed her role so diligently that one is moved by her performance. Chawla had really great face expressions but her role was very limited and was not given a chance to fully express herself.

A great movie by Raj Kumar Santoshi. His movies always give some message to the audience. His movies are like novels of Nanak Singh (a Punjabi novelist who's novels always had a purpose and targeted a social evil) because they have a real message for the audience. They are entertaining as well as lesson-giving.

Asli-Naqli
(1962)

A Classic
This is one of the best movies I have seen. I am surprised that movies now-a-days don't come even near this movie. It was very entertaining indeed. The movies shows clean innocent love between people. It shows that you don't need money to be happy.

Dev Anand a grandson of a wealthy man leaves house searching for self identity. He ends up with a small family consisting of brother and sister only. They give him all the love he had been missing from his life. He finds his love of life there as well.

Sadhna acted wonderfully in this movie. Dev Anand was okay. Some scenes are very emotional especially that scene where Dev Anand's adopted sister fights with him.

A must see movie.

Pinjar: Beyond Boundaries...
(2003)

Best of Best
I don't have words to describe how good this movie is. Only a genius like Amrita Pritam could have written such a real depiction of the days of partition. The movie kept haunting me for many days.

Urmila did the role of her life in this movie. She put life in the role of Puroo and Manoj Vajpai did no less in his role as Rashid. It is hard to imagine anyone other than these two doing the role of Puroo and Rashid. The Punjabi costumes looked so natural on Urmila and Manoj looked like a natural Punjabi Mussalmaan.

Sandhali Sinha as Lajjo and Suri as Ramchand did fabulous job. Priyanshu Chattarjee did good work as Triloki.

Some of the scenes you just can't get out of your mind. When Puroo meets Lajjo for the first time, it brings tears to your eyes. The climax is just killer. I was expecting a tragic ending but thankfully, the ending was wonderful.

This movie is in the same category as Pakeezah, Mughal-e-Azam, Banaras etc. Not to be missed.

Sarkar Raj
(2008)

Excellent sequel to Sarkar
This movie will go down in history as one of the best from RGV. Amitabh, Abhishek and Ashwariya gave superb performances for their roles. The background music is very good and enhances the impact of scenes.

The movie manages to keep you on the edge because of suspense. I don't agree with some commentators who wrote that the pace of the movie was very slow. It was just right. RGV built the movie in an excellent way to the very extraordinary climax. The climax is worth watching.

Abhishek is going to rise a lot, it seems. He has matured as a seasoned actor.

Ahista Ahista
(2006)

A different kind of love story
This is a kind of movie that will stay with you for a long time. Soha Ali and Abhay Deol both look very beautiful. Soha reminds you so much of her mother Sharmila Tagore. Abhay is a born actor and will rise a lot in the coming future.

The ending of the movie is very different from most movies. In a way you are left unsatisfied but if you really think about it in real terms, you realize that the only sensible ending was the ending shown in the movie. Otherwise, it would have been gross injustice to everyone.

The movie is about a professional witness who comes across a girl waiting to get married in court. Her boyfriend does not show up and she ends up being helped by the witness. Slowly slowly, over the time, he falls in love for her. It is not clear if she has similar feelings for him or not. Watch the movie for complete details.

The movie really belongs to Abhay. I look forward to seeing more movies from him. Soha is pretty but did not speak much in the movie. Her eyes, her innocence did most of the talking.

Karz
(1980)

Great Classic
This is one of my favourites. When I was growing up, we had a video of this movie. I saw this movie countless times and never got tired of it. That song dard-e-dil is an amazing song. Tina Munim looked so beautiful in that song with a black scarf on her head.

Rishi Kapoor truly is one of the best actors. He did justice to the role. Durga Khote as Rishi Kapoor's mother played a very emotional role. Simi Grewal was stunning in her role as Rani Sahiba and a villain.

This is a must see movie. It's the best movie on reincarnation, I can think of. The only other movie that would come close is Kudrat.

Mannat
(2006)

A great Punjabi movie depicting the brutalities of 1980s Punjab.
One of the best Punjabi movies I ever saw. Jimmy Shergill did a wonderful role as Captain Nihal Singh. Kulraj who played his wife Prasan Kaur in this movie is such a beautiful girl and she did justice to her role.

The movie did a good job exposing the police brutality in the 1980s in Punjab. The villain - Inspector Jhotekutt - was a common thing in Punjab in those days.

The movie was full of tragedies but the ending is good.

This Punjabi movie was in par with Hindi movies. Hopefully, they make more such movies. The Punjabi spoken in this movie was real and not urban Punjabi or the one spoken in Delhi. It was really village Punjabi. Shergill speaks very cool Punjabi.

In short, it was worth watching and it was time well spent.
