Silver Linings Playbook
(2012)

Caution: A good movie, but a way overrated movie!
If you go into this movie thinking that you would like to see a romantic drama with some laughs, a good cast, and a good heart, then you will like this movie. If you go into this movie thinking you are about to see one of the best movies in recent years, then you will be asking yourself "Really?" throughout the entire film. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie overall. I just wish my expectations had not been so high. There was very good acting by everyone in the cast, and Jennifer Lawrence is arguably one of the prettiest actresses to come along in decades, but during much of the movie the dialogue just doesn't sound even remotely believable. There was also a contrived fight scene near the end of the movie that I guess was necessary for the plot, but it was entirely 100 percent unbelievable. Still, I would give this movie 3 out of 4 stars for the good acting and the good-natured script. The world needs more positive movies like this one.

Dick
(1999)

Trust the IMDb User Rating for 7000 votes. This film is not very funny!!!
This movie is lame, mean-spirited, and unfunny! I'm always amazed at how the written user reviews can be so glowing for a movie that the majority of IMDb voters clearly thinks is a waste of time.

Also, I cannot honestly say that I liked the late President Nixon. But perhaps if I had actually despised him with a bitter passion, then I think I might have found this movie more amusing.

"Dick" is a total waste of a good cast, and it's a waste of two hours of your day. If you want to see a funny, intelligent, good-natured movie about a president, then I would highly recommend the movie "Dave".

Nicholas Nickleby
(2002)

A Horrible Movie. Truly, Truly Horrible.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW IMMEDIATELY. Do not read any further if you want to be surprised!

Ready? This movie stinks. It stinks on ice. It has a 7.4 IMDb reader rating, and it has all kinds of positive blurbs on the back of the video box, mostly from prominent film critics. But you know what? They're all wrong!

This is one of the darkest and most depressing, perverted, bizarre, pointless, meandering, bitter revenge stories ever to emerge as a PG-rated period costume drama.

Gee, I wonder why it did so poorly at the box office? Darn those ignorant masses.

Wives and Daughters
(1999)

Nice ending, but long, drawn-out, contrived melodrama in the middle.
Having just spent five hours watching this mini-series, I feel the need to warn IMDb readers just how surprisingly downbeat and unpleasant it really is, for the most part. I'm giving it only 4 out of 10 stars, because I don't much care for somber soap operas, even when they have a satisfying ending.

However, I must say that the movie is not without its good points. The entire cast is excellent, from the beautiful star (who is supposed to be a "rather plain" girl), all the way down to the heroine (who has a truly great closing line). And the production values, the scenery, and the dialogue are all very good as well.

It's just that the whole thing seems frequently bleak and/or shrill. And there's very little comic relief, except for the stepmother, who is played wonderfully, and also two other characters, who I think were supposed to be old maid sisters. (I have to admit to getting character overload when watching this kind of movie.)

Anyway, if a heavy romantic drama is your cup of tea, then you might enjoy this one. But give me the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma any day.

The Iron Giant
(1999)

Nice moral and ending, but cold, distant and uninviting
I thought the characters in this movie were charmless. It had kind of a dark, distant feel for me, and it never drew me in. But you can't argue with the message of non-violence presented in the movie, or its emphasis on personal responsibility. Other pluses are the animation, and the nice ending.

The Spanish Prisoner
(1997)

An offbeat but captivating mystery, well worth seeing
I hate hearing a constant stream of profanities in movies. So I'm really impressed how David Mamet has made such an interesting and suspenseful film, and still managed to keep it at the PG level.

I agree the dialogue in this movie does not always sound natural, unlike the dialogue in, say, a Shakespeare play, for example. And there are probably some plot loopholes, although some of these can be explained if you think really hard about who all of the bad guys are.

This is not a perfect movie, but I did find it very entertaining. I was frequently on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. And I thought that both the cast and score were great. So I would highly recommend this film to anyone who likes a good suspense story, and who can suspend their own critical disbelief for a couple of hours.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover
(1989)

Totally repulsive waste of time
This movie is a totally repulsive waste of time. If you are a brutish pig, then this movie has a good lesson for you to learn (I guess). Otherwise, if you are a normal human being, then don't waste your time on this repellent, repulsive, artsy schmartsy, very pretentious piece of trash.
