When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and 2023’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017), “Dunkirk” (2018) and, to some extent, “Oppenheimer” (2024) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity...

I went into Those About To Die, the latest big-budget effort by Peacock to convince people to watch something other than The Office on it, not really knowing what to expect; though I certainly had my hopes. Given the Ancient Roman setting, I hoped to see epic gladiator battles and chariot races and a fresh take on this particular period in history. And given the involvement of Roland Emmerich, I was hoping said fresh take would be enjoyably nonsensical a la his 2011 film Anonymous.
The end result is only about half of what I was hoping for. While the production values and action sequences are impressive and often entertaining, the actual story and characters that make up a bulk of the show’s runtime leave something to be desired. There isn’t much of a narrative hook or character dynamics to latch onto; and as such, it often ends up...

Plot: An epic drama set in the corrupt world of the spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition, exploring a side of ancient Rome never before told — the dirty business of entertaining the masses, giving the mob what they want most…blood and sport. The series introduces an ensemble of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire who collide at the explosive intersection of sports, politics, and dynasties.
Review: The recent release of the Gladiator II trailer proves that the spectacle and grandeur of the Roman Empire make for fascinating storytelling. Influenced by epics like Spartacus, Cleopatra, and Ben-Hur, the arenas and gladiatorial combat have rarely been as good as they have been on the big screen. Returning to the book that inspired David Franzoni’s initial script for Ridley Scott’s 2000 Best Picture-winning feature film, Those About To Die takes a deeper dive into the politics and machinations of Rome during the first century.

At six of the last 11 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019) and Hoyte van Hoytema and Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer” (2024). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. Denzel Washington is taking on a totally new type of role in the upcoming Gladiator sequel, Gladiator 2. He’s played all kinds of intense characters lately, but his part in this one seems way more fun and loose.
Director Ridley Scott says Denzel is playing a sly dude named Macrinus. He’s like this mega rich guy who owns all kinds of businesses – from weapons making to growing food. Macrinus also runs a gladiator training stable, which doesn’t sound too nice based on how Scott describes him.
It sounds like Macrinus might be one of the bad guys. He seems pretty cruel to the gladiators and wants power like becoming emperor one day. Denzel is known for playing tough criminal-types before, so a villain role like this could be super exciting to see.
What really stands out is that Denzel looks like he’s enjoying himself a lot in the trailers.

The first trailer for "Gladiator II" features heart-racing action and even more heart-racing shots of Paul Mescal's arms. Threatening to upstage both of those things, however, are Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger as a pair of flamboyant, makeup-wearing, gold-bedecked young emperors. With their outlandish appearance and demented glee at the violence of the arena, they promise to be the kind of scenery-chewing villains who can elevate a movie from good to great.
Like Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus in the original film, these brats are (loosely) grounded in real-life Roman history. Hechinger and Quinn are playing, respectively, Caracalla and Geta, the sons of Rome's first African emperor, Septimius Severus. Even among the long list of sadists, perverts, and megalomaniacs that ruled over Rome, Caracalla and Geta stand out for having some particularly messy family conflicts, and Scott's decision to cast non-African actors as members of Rome's only African dynasty is also quite messy.

After months of speculation, the first trailer for Gladiator II has been released, showcasing Paul Mescal as the grown-up Lucius. A veteran of memorable roles like Aftersun, Mescal’s character finds himself once again in the thick of gladiatorial combat, centuries removed from the heel of his corrupt uncle, Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original. In a sweeping follow-up to the 2000 Oscar-winning epic directed by Sir Ridley Scott, Lucius’s journey is marked by treachery and vengeance. His character finds himself caught up in blood-soaked arenas and intricate political plots, transitioning from a life of privilege to reluctant gladiatorhood.

In the Hollywood business, one actor’s rejection can become another actor’s success story. This is what happened in the case of Gladiator star Russell Crowe when he rejected a huge acting opportunity that gave Hugh Jackman his launch to stardom.

The legacy of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was such that a young Russell Crowe was overnight taught to regard himself as a celebrity of great public standing. He was no longer a wet-behind-the-ears Aussie, out trying his luck in Hollywood. The momentous shift in history that defined the launch of the film immediately cleaved the industry into two eras: pre and post-Gladiator.

Ridley Scott has made some of the greatest films that have stood the test of time and are celebrated today. The filmmaker is behind classics such as Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Thelma & Louise, etc, and at 86, he continues to churn out epic films mounted on a huge scale. The director is also known for being a perfectionist and is very particular about the look of his films.
A still from Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven | 20th Century Fox
One of his most divisive films was the theatrical version of Kingdom of Heaven. Audiences expected the historical epic to be on the level of Gladiator but it lacked depth and characterization. Several crucial scenes that the director wanted to put were cut from the theatrical version. However, the director’s cut version of the film became a significant improvement over it.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

Ridley Scott had an entirely different idea for Gladiator 2. When the first film became a huge success, even winning Oscars, Scott and team planned a sequel film by retconning Crowe’s death in the film. Scott will never reveal the story that Nick Cave had written for the earlier sequel plans. However, he explained the first shot of the film that could’ve potentially brought back Crowe.

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 88 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2024 winner, Robert Downey, Jr., was 58 when he picked up his prize for “Oppenheimer.” He joined 16 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. Daisy Edgar-Jones turned training for “Twisters” into a competition with her fellow “Normal People” alum Paul Mescal.
While Mescal transformed into warrior Lucius for Ridley Scott’s sequel “Gladiator II,” Edgar-Jones had to learn how to properly run onscreen. That’s the same thing, right?
“I’m not good at running; like I have a weird run, which I was told as a kid. And for me, that was a big stunt — to try and make it look not pathetic,” Edgar-Jones told Variety. “I did running lessons — isn’t that crazy?”
She added, “Actually, Paul [Mescal] and I were laughing about it, because he was training for ‘Gladiator II’ and I was training for ‘Twisters,’ and obviously he had to be huge and I was like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to be right up there with you.'”

Paul Mescal is hoping for double the success this fall when two big movies he’s in come out at the same time. The actor from “Gladiator II” and the new “Wicked” movie thinks their November 22nd release date could lead to big profits like last year’s “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” movies. He’s even given them a fun nickname – “Glicked”!
You may remember how “Barbie” the movie and “Oppenheimer” about the inventor of the atomic bomb both did amazingly well last year even though they were total opposites. The silly Barbie film made $1.4 billion worldwide while the serious history one made almost $1 billion too. Mescal thinks his sword & sandals epic “Gladiator II” and the musical fantasy “Wicked” adapted from Broadway have the same chance.
In an interview, Mescal said “It would be so cool because the movies really couldn’t be more different. If people want to check them...

The news that both 'Minions 3' and 'Shrek 5' are in the works is a good reminder that there are many hotly anticipated sequels, prequels, and spin-offs coming soon to theaters and TV. Marketing movies is expensive—often an additional 30% of a film’s production budget—so studios rely on brand recognition to ensure their films have the widest possible reach with moviegoers. Although there is a fine line between fandom and fatigue, there are several reasons for entertainment fans to get excited for familiar characters on the horizon.
'Minions 3'
Hot on the heels of ‘Despicable Me 4,’ which is currently lighting up the box office, Universal and Illumination have announced that ‘Minions 3’ is in the works, targeting June 30, 2027 as its release date. The film will be directed by Pierre Coffin, who helmed the first three ‘Despicable Me’ films and the first ‘Minions’ movie.
‘Shrek 5’
As announced July 9, Dreamworks has set July 1, 2026 as the release date for ‘Shrek 5,’ the seventh film in the franchise, counting the two Puss in Boots films. Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Mike Myers are all on board for the sequel, but no word yet on whether Antonio Banderas will be in the cast.
‘Kraven the Hunter’
Sony’s Spider-Man universe suffered a bump in the road early this year when its February release of ‘Madame Web’ misfired at the box office. Now that Venom is getting his ‘Last Dance’ in October and ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is still in production, the studio is keen on keeping their Marvel properties bringing in new audiences. The next spin-off character to grace the screen will be Spider-Man foe Kraven the Hunter in his first on-screen appearance. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johson (as Kraven) and Russell Crowe, the film is looking for a slightly older audience and will sport an R rating
‘Gladiator II’
The first trailer recently dropped for the follow-up to the 2000 classic, ‘Gladiator.’ The all-star cast, epic action set pieces, and reputation of its director, Ridley Scott, mean there’s a lot riding on this November release. Read more about the cast in our “who’s who” breakdown of the trailer.

Paul Mescal hopes the same-day release of Gladiator II and Wicked will be the sequel to Barbenheimer.
Last year, Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on the same day, becoming a box office phenomenon. The Greta Gerwig-directed film opened with $162M, and the Christopher Nolan film opened with $82.4M.
Mescal is manifesting that audiences will go to the box office later this year to see both films on the weekend starting Friday, November 22.
“Wickdiator doesn’t really roll off the tongue does it? I think my preference would probably be Glicked if it has a similar effect to what it did for Barbie and Oppenheimer,” Mescal said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Mescal continued, “It would be amazing ’cause I think the films couldn’t be more polar opposites and it worked in that context previously. So fingers crossed people come out and see both films on opening weekend.

Barbenheimer was a phenomenon. On paper, Barbie and Oppenheimer had little in common, but fans embraced the counter-programming and helped propel both movies to massive success, with Barbie taking in $1.4 billion and Oppenheimer grossing $976 million. With Gladiator II and Wicked set to premiere on the same day later this year, some are hoping we’ve got Barbenheimer 2.0 on our hands.
It seems that Gladiator II star Paul Mescal is also a fan of the match-up. “Wickdiator doesn’t really roll off the tongue does it? Spoiler Alert!Spoilers for House of the Dragon Ahead
Joffrey Baratheon, played by Jack Gleeson, is one of the most despicable characters in Game of Thrones, which says a lot as many in the series deserve a lot of hate. The young King and son of Cersei Lannister is a spoiled and violent brat, whose violent tendencies make him extremely dangerous.
Apart from all the messed-up antics, one scene, in particular, seems to have irked the fandom yet again as they follow the new season of House of the Dragon. Joffrey is seen talking about the death of Rhaenyra Targaryen in an episode of the flagship show, which is basically a spoiler for the prequels, which takes place hundreds of years prior.

The scope for a definitive film about Napoleon Bonaparte can only be grand. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon was released with a theatrical runtime of just under two hours and forty minutes. However, there has always been talk of a director’s cut that is twice as long. It was reported that Apple, the studio behind the Joaquin Phoenix historical film, has said that the four-hour director’s cut will “not be made available any time soon.” Perhaps their time frame has shortened as the MPA (formerly the MPAA) has just given an official rating to the Napoleon: Director’s Cut. It has been “Rated R for strong violence,
grisly images, sexual content, some nudity and language.”
Ridley Scott himself confirmed not only its existence but its release, saying last year, “I’m working on it. It was four [hours] 10 [minutes] this morning…And so what will happen is, we’ll screen [the theatrical cut] first with Sony,...
