LIFE IS STRANGE 2 (2018) Sean and Daniel Diaz, are two brothers that end up going on a wild journey together after a series of events turn catastrophic for them. Things gradually become more and more complicated after strange developments occur, causing their lives to forever be changed.
LiS2 is a very dramatic, emotional coming of age story, tinged with similar angst and supernatural elements as the first games. I love the characters of Sean and Daniel, their brotherly bond was incredible. Honestly, this bond, their mixed-race culture/background (Hispanic/Caucasian), their shared loss (the loss of their father Estaban and past abandonment by mother Karen) and the tragic reasons of why they are forced to flee, as well as the manifestation of the supernatural abilities, was certainly enough to carry this story along without the apparent need to over-politicize it.
When I began this game I was thrilled to have diverse main characters, specifically Latino/Hispanic, thinking how rare that is in the gaming realm, and how good to have diverse characters in a sci-fi, fantasy where their presence would surely hold more meaning than to simply make a racial/political statement. Token characters. At first, this game really shone apart in that arena.
Gradually, the game began to focus more and more on political climate and social issues however, and while this is done mostly compassionately, alternately it was also heavy-handed and stereotypical. The writing seemed overwhelmingly pessimistic rather than hopeful, widening the divide instead of ever bridging it. There were quite a few times that felt less than subtle and cringey, almost cheap in the way it milked the drama for all it was worth. By the end, the story felt bogged down, melodramatic, almost soapy. Too much bad luck, I suppose, can begin to feel unrealistic.
Even still, this was a great game, visually, audibly, overall dialogue writing. The whole thing is pretty stunning considering. And the choices were interesting and well balanced. I love the mixture of thoughtful, wandering scenes with the fast-paced action scenes.
Developed by Dontnod and published by Square Enix, Life is Strange 2 was a really good installment and continuation to an intriguing series, but hopefully diversity can be used to unify rather than divide, and not only to make a political statement. Diverse cultures have so much more to offer. Overall, this was a very memorable game. Can't wait to continue following the series and see where it leads.
