[This story contains spoilers for Rebel Ridge.]
Rebel Ridge star AnnaSophia Robb is keenly aware that no one could write a more storybook ending to the behind-the scenes saga of Jeremy Saulnier’s latest critically acclaimed film.
The thriller, which required multiple attempts at completing principal photography before finally wrapping in 2022, has reigned atop Netflix’s top ten and various other streaming originals charts in the two-and-a-half weeks it’s been available to stream. The pic chronicles Aaron Pierre’s Terry Richmond and Robb’s Summer McBride as they risk life and limb to put a stop to a corrupt small-town police department in Louisiana.
After the film’s scheduled production was shut down by the pandemic in 2020, Robb joined the cast ahead of 2021’s spring shoot, replacing another actor in the process. A month into filming, former lead actor, John Boyega, abruptly left the project due to “family reasons,” putting the mid-budget film in a precarious situation.

Saoirse Ronan is taking on one of her most intense roles yet.
After playing a haunting child with sociopathic tendencies in “Atonement,” the now-grownup A-lister leads Sundance breakout-indie “The Outrun,” based on Amy Liptrot’s bestselling memoir.
Ronan stars as Rona (a bit confusing), a young woman recovering from alcoholism. Rona returns to her remote home in the Orkney Islands after losing herself in London; there, she reconnects with her past, her parents, and the atmospheric isolation of the islands on which she grew up.
Nora Fingscheidt directs the highly-anticipated feature, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. IndieWire critic David Ehrlich tweeted on Thursday, “So weird that this very good Saoirse Ronan drama still doesn’t have U.S. distribution! Not the easiest sell in the world, but she’s an absolute force in it.”
Ehrlich wrote in the review that Ronan is “the film’s most dizzying and mesmeric effect,...

This post contains spoilers for the movie "Foe."
Garth Davis' 2023 sci-fi film "Foe" is a somber, confusing mess of a film that calls its shots early on, but remains mysterious regardless. It's set in the near future of 2065 when the Earth's natural resources are dwindling. Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and her husband Junior (Paul Mescal) live in a remote family home that has been in Junior's family for generations. The trees around their house have all died and their marriage seems to be on the rocks; they fight and sleep in separate beds. Junior is also wary of visitors, assuming that Hen is having affairs ... which she might have had in the past.
One evening, Junior and Hen are visited by a man named Terrance (Aaron Pierce) whom Hen met years before. Terrance works for a well-moneyed astronautics corporation called OuterMore. OuterMore is planning a grand migration project that would relocate...

If you want to prove you’re committed to the continued survival of movie theaters, a great way to do it is to make a showing at the annual CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. It’s not Apple, or Amazon and MGM, or Sony, which opened last year’s convention but will sit out this year. After hearing Poseidon’s name mentioned throughout Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ first six episodes, we’ll finally meet the Greek god who rules the sea.
Tuesday’s penultimate episode, titled “We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of,” will see Black Sails alum Toby Stephens make his debut in the live-action Disney+ show as Poseidon. Given that the powerful sea god has been Mia from Percy’s life thus far — a few divine interventions being the exception — it’s easy to write him off as an uncaring dad. However, the upcoming installment looks to put things in perspective. It’s...

Sundance film festival: the Oscar-nominated actors star as a buoy and a satellite falling for each other after the world has ended in a head-scratching experiment
At Sundance, a festival geared towards acquisition with unsold films going for the hard sell, there’s something intriguing about those that withhold. While for mysterious romance Love Me, the involvement of the Oscar nominees Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun was enough by itself to vault the film to the top of many wishlists, its logline was less of a sure thing. A post-apocalyptic love story between a buoy and a satellite was something that people would have to see to understand and so there was an unusual sense of curious excitement in the air at its packed-out premiere, no one quite sure what was about to be experienced.
But while the curiosity might have sustained itself for the most part, the excitement slowly faded,...

Exclusive: Seth Brodie, Chief Financial Officer at Anonymous Content, is leaving the company.
Deadline understands that Brodie’s departure is amicable. No word on his next move.
The departure comes as Anonymous Content has been searching for nearly a year for a new CEO following the surprising resignation of Dawn Olmstead and COO Heather McCauley from the company. Sources close to the company told Deadline that it is in the final stages of the search.
The duo resigned in March. Olmstead resurfaced in December, teaming up with Charlize Theron and her Denver & Delilah partners Beth Kono and Aj Dix to launch a new venture.
Brodie joined Anonymous Content in 2021. Before that, he was SVP of finance and strategy at Legendary Entertainment, having joined that company from DreamWorks Studios, where he was VP for finance and strategic planning.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

Sir Ridley Scott, the legendary filmmaker and grumpy grandpa extraordinaire, should probably be pictured in the dictionary next to the term "straight shooter." So when you ask him why he finally decided to make a sequel to "Gladiator", he's not going to default to studio-approved talking points. Instead, he'll cut right to the chase and tell you it all came down to finding a reason to make "Gladiator 2" other than for money.
"Well, economically, it makes sense," Scott told Deadline. (See what I mean?) Like most people, Scott felt the first film was "completely satisfactory, creatively complete, so why muck with it, right?" Of course, money talks in Hollywood, so he kept having conversations about the project for the next 20 years, to the point where it "started to spell itself out as an obvious thing to do, and that's how it evolved." Notably, the sequel nearly went in a...

Production expenditure on scripted screen production in Australia in 2022/23 was the second highest on record at $1.49Bn (A$2.34Bn) across 213 titles, according to Screen Australia’s annual drama report, but spend on Australian theatrical features declined by 54% from last year.
Spend on scripted screen production was down 4% on last year’s record expenditure but was still significantly above the five-year average, the report found. Australian titles made up $718M (A$1.13Bn) of that expenditure with decreases in spending by Australian subscription TV and SVOD services.
However Free-to-Air (Fta) TV and Broadcaster Video-On-Demand (Bvod) providers helped offset those declines with spend on titles such as Total Control Series 3, Rfds Series 2 and While The Men Are Away.
Meanwhile, Australian theatrical features saw total expenditure of $231M (A$363M) in 2022/23, down 54% compared to the previous year and 17% below the five-year average. Australian features produced during this period include Warwick Thornton’s The New Boy,...

At the age of 29, the actor already has four Oscar nominations – but which performance deserved a trophy the most? Ahead of the release of her new sci-fi thriller Foe, we rate her greatest roles
Pre-teen Ronan seems almost shockingly girlish now, but already commands attention as Michelle Pfeiffer’s precocious daughter in her film debut. Amy Heckerling’s underrated romcom is sheer wish fulfilment for older women like me, with Pfeiffer’s fortysomething career woman getting it on with goofy younger guy Paul Rudd.

Trafalgar Releasing’s concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was on song at the U.K. and Ireland box office, debuting at No. 1 with £5.7 million ($6.9 million), according to numbers from Comscore.
The film is now the territory’s highest grossing event cinema release, surpassing National Theatre Live’s filmed play “Prima Facie,” starring Jodie Comer, which collected £5.5 million in 2022. Swifties will now strive to take the film beyond the £9.8 million earnings of “Michael Jackson: This Is It” (2009) to make it the highest-grossing concert film in the U.K. and Ireland.
Tim Richards, founder and CEO of cinema chain Vue International, said: “We saw an incredible response from Swifties across the U.K. and Ireland who dressed up, sang along and danced away with fellow fans, with sell out sessions despite scheduling an unprecedented number of shows so no one missed out.”

“We’re totally open to [all forms of] partnerships,” Davoli explained. “We’re willing to be minority partners [or] majority partner; the devil’s in the details. And that’s not complicated in a way, [because] we let the lawyers figure out the details.”

Add Anonymous Content to the list of entertainment companies hit by layoffs, as Deadline has confirmed that around 8% of staffers were let go on Friday.
Cuts at the company, heretofore home to around 170 people, were attributed by sources to efforts to remain competitive, during a time of reckoning for an already economically unstable industry now looking to come back from not just one, but two hugely impactful strikes.
Positions were cut across all divisions, including talent management, television, motion picture, literary, media rights, and branded entertainment, with employees being notified today.
A management and production company also now in the final stages of the search for a new chief executive, Anonymous Content is currently in theaters with Foe, the Amazon sci-fi thriller, starring Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan, which world premiered late last month at the New York Film Festival. The company is known for its work on decorated films like Spotlight and The Revenant,...

The upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” is bringing the Western genre back into center stage this October.
The film took the top spot on Whip Media’s Movie Anticipation Report for the month, based on viewing intent data from TV Time, Whip Media’s TV and movie tracking app with more than 28 million global registered users. Not only that, the crime drama has already received mass critical acclaim, perhaps making up for its various production complications for distributors Apple and Paramount.
Stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert de Niro, and Lily Gladstone play the leads of the highly anticipated film, which is an adaptation of the 2017 book of the same name by author David Grann. Serving as both director and producer, Martin Scorsese also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Eric Roth, marking his latest in a series of collaborations with DiCaprio and de Niro.
Following September’s horror releases, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” takes the No.

A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.
A SAG-AFTRA interim agreement allowed the talent to promote the film at TIFF,...
