Drew Barrymore defended Hugh Grant after he caused a stir at the Oscars last weekend for making things awkward during a red carpet interview with ABC’s pre-show host Ashley Graham.
In the now-viral video, things went south when the model-actress missed his joke about the novel “Vanity Fair,” attributing the reference to the magazine of the same name’s famous Oscars after-party. He refused to appease her follow-up questions with more than a few words, answering that he was rooting for “no one in particular” and was wearing “just my suit.”
Though the internet accused him of being “shady,” his friend Barrymore wrote it off as a classic Grant moment.

Ditzy farce in the time of a solemn family function became a popular mainstream sub-genre with the release of "Four Weddings And A Funeral" all those decades ago. Years later, writer Dean Craig successfully tapped the formula to set up the 2007 British comedy, "Death At A Funeral", which was an instant winner. For his directorial debut "Love Wedding Repeat", Craig tries re-hauling the formula all over again.
The film is pitched as a rom-com that tries serving up random slapstick to keep moving a very basic plot. Cokehead Marc (Jack Farthing) gatecrashes into the posh wedding reception of Hayley (Eleanor Tomlinson). They have had a fling of sorts in the past, so Marc is convinced that Hailey will readily walk out of her affluent marital bliss with him. Hayley tells her brother Jack (Sam Claflin) to discreetly take care of Marc before he becomes an embarrassment at the party. Of course,...

It’s not a bad idea in these dark days to provide sheltering audiences with a light-hearted romp. What a shame then that the soufflé writer-director Dean Craig labors to construct in Love Wedding Repeat sinks early on and never recovers. Instead of a fresh take on Four Weddings and a Funeral, . Remember Hugh Grant, hair-tousled just so, in his star-making role as an Englishman who falls for an American beauty (a radiant Andie MacDowell) at one wedding and meets her fiancé at a second? Well, here we go again...

Look, it’s right there in the title: love, wedding, repeat. At first blush, director Dean Craig seems primed to bring a rom-com twist to the sub-genre of timeline-bending adventures that easily slot inside all sorts of different narratives — from “Groundhog Day” to “Edge of Tomorrow” to this year’s “Palm Springs.” But “Love Wedding Repeat” spends far too long getting there, instead opting to dig into a cute enough comedy without any timeline weirdness for more than half its running time. By the time it inches into its second hour without so much of a hint of anyone reliving the same day over and over again,
Based on the 2012 French comedy “Plan de Table,” Craig’s film eventually does kick into timeline tricks, utilizing them in such flimsy fashion that the conceit never gets a chance to blossom or charm. Too bad, because it’s a clever idea, and...

The credited adaptation source for Love Wedding Repeat might be a minor French comedy from 2012 called Plan de table, but the model for this strained opera buffa is two Brit hits from the 1990s: Sliding Doors and Four Weddings and a Funeral. From the first comes the idea of parallel realities, their varying permutations dictated by chance; from the second, well, it's right there in the new film's title. Writer-director Dean Craig clearly worships at the altar of Richard Curtis, whose diluted DNA is all over Netflix's rom-com about an obstacle course of ceremonial chaos along the path to blissful ...

Studiocanal has launched the first trailer for the reimagining of Noël Coward’s classic comedy ‘Blithe Spirit’ featuring Dan Stevens.
The film follows best-selling crime novelist Charles (Dan Stevens) who is struggling with catastrophic writer’s block and a stressful deadline for his first screenplay. His picture-perfect second wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) is doing her best to keep him focussed in the hope of fulfilling her dream of heading to Hollywood. Charles’ desperate search for inspiration leads him to invite Madame Arcati (Judi Dench), a medium recently exposed as a fraud, to perform a séance in their home. They all get more than they bargained for when Arcati accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife: the fiery and jealous Elvira (Leslie Mann) who embarks on a mission to kill Charles so she can spend eternity with him which leads to an increasingly comical and deadly love triangle.

Exclusive: As the Asian and Asian American community in Hollywood continues to bask in the awards season victories of Lulu Wang’s The Farewell and Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (Cape) looks to add to Asian representation with the eighth annual Cape New Writers Fellowship. Partnering with major industry partners, Cape will launch the professional development program which trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood.
“As reflected by the Asian and Pacific Islander sweep of the Oscars screenwriting awards last night (original and adapted), it is clear stories written by our community have mainstream appeal,” said Michelle K. Sugihara, Cape Executive Director. “Pipeline programs like the Cape New Writers Fellowship are critical to provide a springboard into the industry and to elevate authentic storytelling.”
Led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives, the Fellowship was co-founded and is co-chaired by Steve Tao and Leo Chu (Creator/Showrunner of Supah Ninjas and Afro Samurai; Batman Ninja screenwriter).
Fellows will participate in masterclasses and writing labs where they will receive one-on-one mentorship with industry professional including Walter Hamada, Adele Lim, Amy Rardin (Co-Creator/Ep of Charmed), Alex Tse (Co-Creator/Ep of Wu-Tang: An American Saga), Monica Macer (Showrunner/Ep of Gente-fied), Melinda Hsu Taylor (Showrunner/Ep of Nancy Drew), Laverne McKinnon, Jonathan King, and Lana Cho (Co-ep Four Weddings and a Funeral).
Below you can read the bios of the 2020 Cape New Writers Fellowship participants:

Save Yourselves! offers a slice of small sci-fi in a comedy world, attempting to mesh social commentary with general irreverence. Unfortunately, the laughs fade about halfway through and the world-building never blossoms into something wholly engaging. Written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, there is an energy early on that slips away as the narrative moves forward.
Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani) are a stereotypical Brooklyn couple, very hip and very intellectual and very unprepared for what will happen next. Given the opportunity to use a friend’s cottage upstate, they make a spontaneous decision to escape the city, turn off all of their devices and recalibrate in the wilderness. While they’re at it, maybe they can deepen their relationship. As soon as they arrive, however, aliens decide to attack the planet, starting with the city they’ve just left. It’s quickly clear...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we cross the pond to talk about Hugh Grant, the floppy-haired Brit who made his fortune in rom-coms and never felt great about it. Though he is in character actor mode now–currently in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen–we look back to the 90s and his stratospheric rise to stardom. Conor and I are joined by Joseph Galbo, a good friend and big-time film fan who does impressive work for the wonderfully bizarre Uscpsc, the social media account for the Us Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Our movies include the little-seen Mike Newell picture An Awfully Big Adventure, the incredibly charming The Englishman who Went up a Hill but Came down a Mountain, the high concept Extreme Measures,...

One of those directors who never watches a film he made after he’s made it, Mike Newell once upon a time breathed new life into British cinema with his box-office-breaking and award-winning romantic comedy Four Weddings And A Funeral, now 25 years old. After this now-cult film, he moved on from the formulas of feel-good movies to Hollywood blockbusters of the likes of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (2005), one more film that has reached cult status according to pop culture standards and yet another that has marked an entire generation of youngsters.
A Cambridge graduate, Newell began directing at 22 and worked on various plays for TV. His springboard to international success was the TV film, The Man In The Iron Mask...

From “Bridget Jones’s Diary” to “Mr. Bean,” Working Title has for the past three and a half decades helped ensure that the sun never sets on British pop culture.
The leaders of the London-based film and television production company, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, have been important emissaries from across the pond, backing stories that resonate with global audiences.
Be they quirky rom-coms or costume-heavy historical epics, their films have enjoyed commercial and critical success. Since it was founded in 1984, Working Title has produced more than 100 features, which have generated $8 billion globally. They have been nominated for 86 Oscars and won 14 statuettes.
Despite its sterling track record, the company, housed in Central London offices near the West End, is an anomaly in today’s movie business. The films that form the spine of its reputation, such as “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Notting Hill” and “Billy Elliot,” are part of a vanishing style of moviemaking.

As the UK heads back to the voting booths tomorrow to elect a government, film and TV stars have been declaring allegiances.
Polls have consistently pointed to a Conservative win at the general election, though a final major survey this morning predicted only a slim victory for the Tories over Labour. Brexit and the National Health Service have been the major campaigning points throughout.
Hugh Grant has been among the most vocal celebrity canvassers, urging the public to vote tactically to avoid a Conservative majority. The Four Weddings And A Funeral star took to the streets last week with Labour and Liberal Democrat politicians.
Grant was asked this week about Conservative leader Boris Johnson recreating a scene from Love Actually as part of his campaign. “I thought it was quite well done, very high production values, but clearly the Conservative Party have an awful lot of money. Maybe that’s where the rubles went.

In recent years, the romantic comedy has taken a sabbatical, at least from the big screen (it seems to have adopted temporary legal-resident status on Netflix). Yet it’s clear that one can point to the occasional exception: the puckishly delightful and moving 2017 indie hit “The Big Sick,” or last year’s “Crazy Rich Asians,” which was such an immersive cross-cultural fairy tale of love, class, and global sci-fi-surreal decor that the shimmering romance at its center was just one of its many entrancements. Even in their success, though, you couldn’t say that either of those movies exactly re-opened the floodgates of romantic comedy. So what are love-starved moviegoers to do?

It seems like only yesterday we were talking about “The Office” in the context of Jim and Pam’s wedding almost featuring a literal dead horse. Now it’s time to talk about the sitcom in the context of the Television Academy almost shutting out Mindy Kaling—one of “The Office” writers who would’ve talked Greg Daniels down from his horse dreams, as the co-writer of that particular episode with him—as an Emmy-eligible producer for the show over a decade ago.
This revelation came out during a recent Elle Magazine interview with Kaling, as she alleged early sexism in her television writing and producing career. Upon “The Office” receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, the Television Academy informed Kaling that her name would be cut from the producers list—making her ineligible to potentially win an Emmy with her colleagues—due to there being too many producers on the list.

Upon “The Office” receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, the Television Academy informed Kaling that her name would be cut from the producers list—making her ineligible to potentially win an Emmy with her colleagues—due to there being too many producers on the list.

Pearlena Igbokwe was an English major at Yale, so it’s no surprise that she loves the process of reading and analyzing a literary work, breaking down the text and identifying its major themes and conclusions. In grade school, she was the type of kid who didn’t groan when a book report was assigned.
These instincts have served Igbokwe well in her nearly 30 years as a creative executive in television. But the Showtime and NBC alum, who has headed Universal Television since 2016, didn’t know what work lay ahead in the spring of 1985, as her sophomore year at the Ivy League college was coming to an end. She only knew she needed to hurry up and find a summer job. While scouring the listings and fliers tacked up on the walls of the career services center at Yale, she was immediately intrigued by a notice described as a “summer...

The legendary TV producer has been bringing laughter into people’s homes for decades, whether it be with his classic sitcoms like “The Jeffersons” and “All in the Family,” or with his...

Launching a series based on a beloved property is harder than it seems. On the one hand, you get the immediate boost of name recognition to lure in preexisting fans. On the other, straying too far from the plot and/or spirit of the original risks sparking their righteous wrath. It’s a tricky balance to strike, as Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and Paramount’s shelved “Heathers” reboot found out the hard way.
Enter “The First Wives Club,” a new series from Tracy Oliver (“Girls Trip”) that will drop simultaneously with Bet’s new streaming service, Bet Plus. The original 1992 movie starred Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn as a trio of furious wives in varying states of crisis, each learning how to stand up to their careless husbands and put themselves first. In that respect, the themes of the movie are pretty much timeless, and...

The Sound of Silence (Michael Tyburski)
What if our happiness wasn’t solely predicated on our fruitful relationships, career success, or spiritual fulfillment, but rather the sounds around us? It’s this idea that drives music theorist and self-proclaimed house tuner Peter (Peter Sarsgaard) to the point of maddening obsession in The Sound of Silence. The directorial debut of Michael Tyburski has a compelling hook as we go on this journey of aural perfection, but the follow-through leaves something to be desired. In terms of its thematic predecessors, The Conversation and Blow Out set an impossibly high bar, but even the narrative propulsion of those classics...

Universal Pictures nabbed rights to “When Michael Met Carrie… and Other People,” a spec script from Meredith Dawson, who is also attached to direct. Paul Feig is attached to produce.
Plot details are currently unknown, though the creative team promises it’s a new take on the romantic comedy.
Dawson, a protege of Mindy Kaling, worked in the writers room for Kaling’s TV adaptation of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” for Hulu. She was also featured on the 2018 Blacklist for her script “Spark,” which is being developed by Amazon Studios and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.
Feig recently wrapped Universal’s “Last Christmas,” a holiday rom-com starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.
The acquisition of “When Michael Met Carrie… and Other People” comes as Universal and studio’s chief Donna Langley are diversifying its pool of directors with more female filmmakers. The studio recently tapped “Black Panther” cinematographer Rachel Morrison...

As a prequel series to “The Dark Crystal,” Netflix’s “Age of Resistance” takes place long before the majority of the Gelfling population disappeared and features seven divided Gelfling clans on Thra who are under Skeksis rule. But when the Skeksis’ horrifying secret is discovered and its effects on the planet of Thra, the Gelflings must unite to fight back against the evil overlords.
Although it takes multiple people to bring just one character to life – from the writers and puppet designers to the puppeteers who also do the initial voice performance as a guide – a slew of celebrities were also lured by the song of Thra to lend their voices. Sigourney Weaver, however, is the one big name who was never seen on screen, in puppet form or otherwise, as the voice of the narrating Myth Speaker.

Dame Kristin Scott Thomas has finally received her first Emmy nomination for her memorable work as powerful businesswoman Belinda on Amazon’s “Fleabag.” She is nominated in Best Comedy Guest Actress, representing a major embrace of “Fleabag” by the TV academy, scoring 11 nominations in total, five of which were for acting. Scott Thomas’ character is given a Women in Business award, which Fleabag had clumsily broken and thus replaced with the famous headless statue of a naked woman. The first thing to know about Four Weddings and a Funeral, the series, is that it bears virtually no resemblance to Four Weddings and a Funeral, the Oscar-nominated 1994 romantic-comedy. It takes place in London, yes. There are four weddings and one funeral, sure. There is a floppy-haired fellow who is always late to the weddings, but, alas, he is no Hugh Grant. A beautiful American is one half of the central love story, but rather than elusive and enigmatic (a clever cover for Andie MacDowell’s wooden screen presence in...
