The finale of Shōgun pushed the series to its best showing so far on Nielsen’s streaming charts.
The FX-produced Hulu series had 608 million minutes of viewing time for the week of its finale, April 22-28. That’s a 45 percent jump from the prior week and Shōgun’s highest total in the nine weeks it has made the top 10. Its previous best was 513 million minutes for its premiere week, which featured the debut of two episodes.
Fallout claimed the overall No. 1 spot for the third straight week, the first such streak for a show on Amazon’s Prime Video. The series had 1.53 billion minutes of viewing, down by about 41 percent week to week. Its three-week total is now a little over 7 billion minutes.
Netflix’s water-cooler drama Baby Reindeer saw a 36 percent jump in viewing, climbing to 915 million minutes from 673 million a week earlier. Several original series also made...

Home viewing charts inspire deja vu: “Anyone but You,” a hit as a PVOD release, just debuted at Netflix. It knocked out Netflix’s expensive “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” from first place after two weeks, falling to #6.
Similarly, “Dune: Part Two” returned for its second week as #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue).
The “Dune” sequel fended off challenges by two recent theatrical releases. Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man” (Universal), once intended as a Netflix original, is #2 at iTunes, third at Fandango. The family-oriented “Arthur the King” (Lionsgate) took second at Fandango, but only #6 at iTunes. Both initially are available to rent for 48 hours for $19.99.
Two new home-play debuts also made top 10 lists. “Cash Out” (Saban) is #9 at iTunes, renting at $6.99; starring John Travolta, the critically reviled title may be getting as much attention for its little-known director Ives. That’s...

With two major sci-fi sequels debuting this week to lead the VOD and Netflix charts, the new films also inspired victory laps for the Part Ones of “Dune” and “Rebel Moon.”
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) leads at both iTunes and Fandango, and Netflix’s original “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” is #1 at the streamer. iTunes packaged the 2021 “Dune: Part One” with its sequel as a $34.99 purchase, and it ranks second there. (“Dune: Part Two” alone rents for 48 hours for $24.99.) “Rebel Moon — Part One” returned at #7 on Netflix’s top 10.
Three other recent theatrical releases also transitioned to home viewing, with curiously different pricing and availability strategies. The top grosser is Neon’s “Immaculate” (approaching $16 million), but it rents for the lowest price: $9.99. “Late Night with the Devil” (IFC) is $14.99, but for that price consumers own it. “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” (Goldwyn) with Liam Neeson is a standard $19.99 rental.

The first week of December saw a lot of people watching holiday films at home. Makes sense; ’tis the season, even in this dreadful year. There’s also little in the way of new titles as competition — and the one major film to debut, timed to the awards season, failed to gain traction.
“Mank,” David Fincher’s Netflix biopic of screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, is considered a leading Oscar contender but debuted to very little initial response. Available on Friday, it showed up at #10 Saturday (the first day it could chart), and has not reappeared since. The black-and-white film starring Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried didn’t gain the attention of other high-profile originals like “Da 5 Bloods,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and “Hillbilly Elegy,” all of which debuted at first or second. Bumping “Mank” from 10th place was the 2000 Adam Sandler comedy “Little Nicky.”

Somehow, December starts on Tuesday even though it only feels like yesterday that the world was turning as normal and everyone was going about their business as usual before the Coronavirus pandemic came along and changed everything. As is the case every time we enter a new month, though, the various streaming services on offer are adding a whole host of new titles to their libraries and over the next seven days, Netflix has more than 50 movies and TV shows heading our way.
The list contains about everything you’d expect, from some all-time classics to several pretty terrible efforts that still stand a decent chance of cracking the Top 10 most-watched list, while there are even a couple of Adam Sandler films thrown in for good measure along with a handful of high-profile originals, and you can check out the full and exhaustive selection below.

October has been great for Netflix subscribers who are also horror fans, as the service has done a fantastic job of offering up plenty of freaky and unsettling new content just in time for Halloween. Adam Sandler’s comedy-horror flick Hubie Halloween, dramatic and cerebral series The Haunting of Bly Manor, and this week’s terrifying psychological horror film His House should be enough to keep you busy for a while.
That said, if you’re really a fan of creepy content, you’re probably wondering what Netflix is going to have to offer now that Halloween has almost come and gone. But fret not, as the platform is bringing a handful of eerie new things your way in November, too, so be ready to stay spooked.

In what looks a key moment in the streaming revolution, Disney has announced that from Oct. 1 it will shutter its kids channels in the U.K. following the launch of Disney Plus and an inability to reach new carriage deals with Sky and Virgin Media.
All three linear Disney brand channels – Disney Channel, Disney Xd and Disney Jr – will be taken off air, though other Disney-owned networks such as National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild and Fox will remain. Last year, Disney did the same in New Zealand shortly after Disney Plus was launched there.
“The direct-to-consumer service, which garnered more than 54.5 million subscribers worldwide in its first seven months, will now premiere all the latest films, series and specials from the three Disney Channels, along with offering a rich and expansive back catalogue of Disney Channel titles in the U.K.,” said Disney’s official statement.

Indie horror film “The Wretched” is inching toward a milestone, eyeing the top spot on box office charts for the fifth weekend in a row. It’s a rare feat that hasn’t been achieved since Marvel’s superhero juggernaut “Black Panther” debuted in 2018.
Notching this particular benchmark, in this case, comes with a pretty big caveat; “The Wretched” is one of the only movies on box office charts. But its relative dominance of a sparse field highlights what has become a winning strategy for IFC Films, the specialty label that behind the supernatural thriller.

With April wrapping up, we can once again look back. We’ve officially finished up with the first third of the calendar. As such, I wanted to once again highlight the best of the year so far, consisting of my top ten and various awards for 2019 to date. Much like last time around, when I did the first quarter of the year at the start of April, I’m mostly limiting it to things that have already hit theaters. My only exception in the past has been that I’d include eligible titles from the currently ongoing Tribeca Film Festival, but since that’s still in progress, I’ll hold off. There are some others from the year that I’m fond of and might have otherwise included, but I didn’t want to cheat, so they’re on hold and will be given a special citation. Basically, it’s an arbitrary decision,...

Happy April, everyone! As we gear up for a brand new month, that means we also have a more horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases coming out this week, making for the perfect way to kick everything off. If you happened to miss it during its theatrical run, The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot heads home on both formats this Tuesday, and I cannot recommend it enough. Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have teamed up for the home releases of Pledge and Rust Creek, and if you’re a big Hellboy fan, two of the animated Hellboy movies are headed 4K Ultra HD as well.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for April 2nd include Terror 5, The Man With The Magic Box, Red Island, The Banished and Toxic Tutu.

Somehow, March is about to end. Ladies and gentlemen, as I seem to find myself saying around this point each and every single year…time really does fly. Believe it or not, we’re now a full three months into the 2018 movie calendar, which means we’re literally a quarter of the way through the film slate for the year. Wow. Just…wow. That got me thinking about what the best of the bunch so far this year has been, as I’m prone to do around this time each year. Since now is around the time when the film slate begins to transition into summer releases and counter programming independent fare ramps up, I thought it was the perfect time to praise the best of 2019 so far. Basically, anything that hit screens between January 1st and March 31st will be up for grabs here for my personal honors. Once again,...

It’s hard to choose a single moment that best exemplifies the hard-edged feminist lens at work in director Jen McGowan’s chilling “Rust Creek,” but the image of the teenage Sawyer (Hermione Corfield) gruffly ripping off her acrylic nails to scale a ditch is a top contender. It’s a move that might be perceived as funny in a more commercial genre film, but is entirely believable in McGowan’s understated and plausible nightmare — making it all the more chilling.
Intimate in scope to its great advantage, “Rust Creek” begins and ends with Sawyer’s journey, with a stable of male friends and foes providing color and intrigue. When she receives word of a job interview in Washington D.C., the soon-to-be college graduate hops in her red SUV and hits the road. Following her navigation app, Sawyer turns off the highway to avoid traffic, and quickly finds herself...

We’re not saying that “Breaking Bad” glamorized making meth in an Rv, but it sure looked a hell of a lot fancier than what is presented in “Rust Creek.” The thriller, which puts a new spin on the classic “girl is lost in the woods” subgenre, shows a seedier, and dangerous, side to the meth game, and much like Sawyer, in the below clip, we would be grabbing the sharpest thing we could find to get out of there too.

Typical to the start of a new year, specialty newcomers are rather few this weekend. Holiday and awards holdovers are still at center stage, while the Sundance Film Festival looms toward the end of the month. This weekend, Katherine Waterston, Michiel Huisman, Michael Shannon and Luke Evans star in Tribeca premiere State Like Sleep, opening Friday day-and-date via the Orchard. The film is the second narrative feature by Meredith Danluck. Hermione Corfield, Jay Paulson and Micah Hauptman star in IFC Midnight’s thriller Rust Creek by Jen McGowan, which also will roll out day-and-date. And Well Go USA is releasing Chinese action title Mojin: The Worm Valley, the follow-up to Mojin: The Lost Legend, which the company released stateside in 2015.

The backwoods and its inhabitants have been a cornerstone of contemporary horror films for decades. Hillbilly hicks and their sterotyped lack of intelligence and aggressive behaviour makes for an easy villain, usually with young people as the targets of their anger. Rust Creek, directed by Jen McGowan (Kelly & Cal) and written by Julie Lipson, tells the tale of a young but smart woman who is caught up not only in the hillbilly's violence, but their own nefarious dealings that leave her vulnerable and almost completely alone. While following a more or less familiar path, McGowan does not shy away from the harsh relatities of rural middle American life, while not taking away any blame born by men for their violence towards women. Sawyer (Hermione...

Tense, relatable, and cut from a familiar narrative cloth, “Rust Creek” manages to overcome a few character and pacing issues to emerge as a quality thriller. The story of a young woman who gets lost in Kentucky’s backcountry and runs afoul of the locals, the film makes a meal out of a very thin premise, and only occasionally stretches the strictures of reason and common sense. And while “Rust Creek” stumbles over a couple of rough patches by way of a few cliché characters, the bones of a good movie are indeed here.

Happy almost 2019, dear readers! The holiday season is nearly over, but rather than let that get you down, why not indulge in some great horror movies coming our way over the next few months? Usually, the winter season of genre releases can be something of a mixed bag in terms of quality, but there some impressive projects coming out in the next few months that have me extremely excited as a horror fan. The two films that are my most anticipated are (of course) Us from Jordan Peele and Christopher Landon’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U, but I’m also very intrigued by what I’ve seen from films like Greta, Glass, Braid, Captive State, and Escape Room so far, and am really looking forward to seeing how those stories come together onscreen as well.

IFC Midnight recently drew the ire of the MPAA for screening an uncut version of Lars von Trier’s The House that Jack Built, a film so insidious it apparently required additional paperwork before it could be legally shown. A new trailer has been revealed for the dramatic thriller Rust Creek. This film, from Kentucky, had its World Premiere at the Betonville Film Festival earlier this year. In the film, a young woman and college senior finds herself in trouble, when her car breaks down. She is found by a stranger, in the woods as her pursuers close in. Rust Creek centrally stars: Hermione Corfield (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) as Sawyer, along with: Micah Hauptman (In Stereo), Jay Paulson and Sean O'Bryan. A preview of the film's January release is available now. The trailer shows Sawyer, with car problems. Two men stop to supposedly help her. However, they have other intentions and Sawyer is chased in the local woods. It appears as if she escapes and is found by another character, Lowell (Paulson). Now, both characters face Sawyer's attackers. But this time, Sawyer is ready for this threat.

The knee-jerk reaction at the opening moments of the trailer for Jen McGowan's Rust Creek is a groan; here's yet another movie about a woman who gets stranded in the backcountry only to be found by a couple of locals who turn out to be killers. Thankfully, this is not that movie.
At least not entirely.
Hermione Corfield leads the movie as Sawyer, a savvy young woman on her way to a job interview. A wrong turn and car trouble leaves her stranded in the Kentucky forest where she is chased by a pair of locals looking to have a good time; whether she's interested or not. She fights back, a chase ensues and Sawyer then finds herself at the mercy of another local named Hollister (Micah Hauptman).
I like that Rust Creek seems to be actively playing agains...

"If they find you here, they'll kill ya." IFC Midnight has released a trailer for Rust Creek, an indie survival thriller from filmmaker Jen McGowan which premiered at the Bentonville Film Festival earlier this year. The film is about an "ambitious, overachieving college senior" who is heading to a job interview, but makes a wrong turn and ends up stranded deep in the frozen Kentucky woods. She is forced into an uneasy alliance with an strange loner with "shadowy intentions", while trying to survive and find her way back home safely. The cast includes Hermione Corfield, Jay Paulson, Micah Hauptman, Sean O'Bryan, Daniel R. Hill, John Marshall Jones, and Jeremy Glazer. This looks very much like a Kentucky woods thriller, exactly as it sounds, with some twists & turns to go along with the survival. Not sure if it's any good though. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jen McGowan's Rust Creek,...

Mr. Mercedes‘ Tessa Ferrer and Jay Paulson (Mad Men) have joined the cast of Catch-22, Hulu’s high-profile limited series co-starring and directed by George Clooney, from Paramount TV and Anonymous Content. Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie and Christopher Abbott star.
Based on Joseph Heller’s novel, Catch-22 follows Captain John Yossarian (Abbott), a U.S. Air Force soldier in World War II who can’t understand why thousands of people who have never met him want to kill him. Desperate to impress his superiors, Colonel Cathcart (Chandler) keeps raising the numbers of the missions his men have to fly, but Yossarian is driven half-mad by his will to live. He wants to complete his service and leave, but his efforts are blocked by Catch-22 — a ridiculous bureaucratic rule that pilots don’t have to fly if they are certified insane, but unfortunately for the men the same rule also states that...
