Angelina Jolie told the Wall Street Journal Magazine that she probably would not become an actor if she was just starting out in the industry in 2023. She’d consider acting on the stage, perhaps, but certainly not a life and career in Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” the Oscar-winner said. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Being under intense public scrutiny for well over two decades has seemingly taken its toll on Jolie, who found herself even more of a tabloid target after she divorced Brad Pitt seven years ago. The stress got so bad that she noticed in 2018, during the filming of her Disney sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” that her voice had changed registers from when she first played the fairy tale villain.

Angelina Jolie has started choosing the roles she takes in movies based on the commitment she needs to make to a feature. The actress recently told Vogue in a new cover story that she began accepting less roles “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.”
The reason, she explained, was that she needed to work on herself — especially amid her contentious divorce from Brad Pitt. “We had a lot of healing to do,” she said, inexplicably speaking in the plural. “We’re still finding our footing.

Angelina Jolie told Vogue magazine that she started doing less film work “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.” Why? “We had a lot of healing to do. We’re still finding our footing,” she said. The Oscar winner did not go into specifics, but the timeline of Jolie’s film hiatus coincides with the end of her marriage to Brad Pitt. She filed for divorce seven years ago in September 2016 after an alleged physical altercation with Pitt took place on a plane.
Jolie said that she feels a “bit down these days,” before revealing: “I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way. Which I don’t want to get into.”
After leading Disney’s successful tentpole “Maleficent” in 2014 and directing and co-starring opposite Pitt in the 2015 flop “By the Sea,” Jolie’s film output took a significant pause.

Disney's latest live-action riff on a classic is "Peter Pan & Wendy," a new adaptation of the classic "Peter Pan" story. Ever since first taking center stage in J.M. Barrie's 1904 stage play, Peter Pan and the magical land of Neverland have captured imaginations all over the world. The whimsical story with a hint of darkness has inspired plenty of movies, plays, and books over the years, each with a slightly different take on the Boy Who Never Grew Up. Here's a brief look back at all of the notable movie adaptations and how they each made the Neverland mythos their own.
"Peter Pan" (1924)
The first authorized movie adaptation of "Peter Pan" was this silent film version, starring Betty Bronson as Peter Pan, Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook, Mary Brian as Wendy Darling, and Virginia Brown Faire as Tinker Bell. J.M. Barrie personally worked on a screenplay for this one,...

Female rage has long been the subject of films, across an array of genres, but only in recent years have women taken the helm, telling these stories in more nuanced, layered, and — yes — super-fun ways. That uniquely female gaze and energy provide the beating heart behind director Tanya Wexler’s indulgent, entertaining action flick “Jolt.”
Lindy (Kate Beckinsale) is a woman with an “impulse control problem.” A traumatic upbringing initiated her rage issues, but as most women in the world know, the trauma of growing up female is a lifelong lesson in grinning and bearing it. But that’s not how Lindy rolls. Despite years of therapy, and her attempts to vent as a member of the military or an athlete in extreme sports, Lindy has found only one way to curb her violent desires: Using a vest made out of electrodes, she gives herself little electric shocks whenever her rage gets too overwhelming.

Sometimes trailers appear that catch your eye before you realize what you're watching. Such was the case with a new trailer for Alice e Peter: Onde Nascem os Sonhos, starring David Oyelowo and Angelina Jolie, which is heading for theaters on June 3. My first thoughts were: lush Hollywood fantasy, big stars, beautiful production design, a wild storyline ... why have I never heard about this movie before? And then I realized, after just a little research, that it began life as Come Away, and we reviewed it! With no disrespect intended toward our own fine reviewer, Mel Valentin, the article was published in February 2021 as part of our Sundance Film Festival coverage, and it slipped completely from my mind. Probably that's because our...

It’s a studio ritual almost as old as Hollywood: announce a production deal right before the release of a filmmaker’s new movie. For David and Jessica Oyelowo’s Yoruba/Saxon, the twinning of “The Water Man” and a two-year first-look Disney deal is more than industry rite. After seven years and six films, it means that the industry has started to catch up to them.
Like many actors, the Oyelowos created a company to improve their own opportunities. In their case, the struggles they faced mirrored a much larger one. “One of the main reasons we wanted to start the company was to have a voice and to provide a place for voices that weren’t being heard,” Jessica said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “For Hollywood to finance certain projects, they required a certain perspective on someone else’s story. We were looking at this as actors thinking,...

Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, Angelina Jolie and Kallus from Star Wars: Rebels sounds like a cracking Sunday afternoon to me… It has been a while since I got to see a decent movie based around the whole Peter Pan tale. I always thought 2003s Peter Pan with Jason Isaacs as Hook was far and away the best version, well outside of Hook obviously. Whenever a new film comes round, be it animated or live action, I am always keen to see how this one is going to play out and how they are going to make it fresh, original and different enough to warrant my attention.
I wouldn’t say I had the loftiest aspirations for Come Away to be honest; after all on the surface it kinda...

In a powerful alliance, Paris-based premium kids content producer Cottonwood Media, German public broadcaster Zdf and its co-pro and distribution arm Zdf Enterprises, HBO Max and Brazil’s Globo are teaming to produce “Theodosia,” a big new live action kids adventure series targeting family audiences.
No budget is given for the 26-part half hour series. Its combination, however, of elements which make for high-end entertainment – period costume, action and foreseeable heavy Vxf – suggest this is another big play by two of Europe’s champions of ambitious live-action kids shows.
One is Cottonwood Media, the kids and family production company at Paris and L.A -based Federation Entertainment whose credits include Studiocanal’s Cannes 2019 pre-sales movie hit “Around the World in 80 Days,” to be screened at Berlin.
The other, Zdf and Zdfe, has a storied recent history in live action kids shows. “Theodosia” will “continue our successful Zdf live action productions such as ‘H2O,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

2020 has been awful for most of us due to the pandemic and the start of this year is no better. Although new movies are not really being made, we are still getting release after realease. I find myself less interested in checking out the big-budget stuff like Tenet and can’t seem to find excitement for Wonder Woman 84. Instead I find myself turning to the lower budget, but way more outlandish, projects that serve up a nice big bowl of escapism. Movies like Knuckledust, Come Away or GLoc.

All cinemas on the mainland UK and Ireland were closed for the first weekend of 2021, in a tough start to the year for the exhibition industry.
In England, all regions were either in tier three – ‘very high alert’ - or four – ‘stay at home’ - as of December 31, 2020. Cinemas and leisure facilities were not able to open in those tiers.
The situation was similar in Scotland, with all local authority areas in level three – ‘very high’ – or four – ‘lockdown’ – from December 24, with cinemas not permitted to open in either.

Actor David Oyelowo has spent his career tackling harrowing stories of racism and those that overcame it – from Martin Luther King, Jr. in “Selma” to King Seretse Khama in “A United Kingdom.” Ironically, the film of his that has gotten the most ridiculous racist reaction is his most recent movie, “Come Away,” which has very little to do with racism as a subject.
“Come Away” stars David and Angelina Jolie as parents to Peter Pan and Alice (of Wonderland) and serves as a prequel of sorts to the more well-known fantasy adventures of both Peter & Alice.

The actor is tired of talking about race, but the trolling of his latest film shows why he still has to. He talks religion, the secret of his happy marriage – and why he worried he had failed the legacy of Martin Luther King
David Oyelowo is tired of talking about racism. After all, he has spent a professional lifetime doing so – not surprisingly, as this has been the focus of many of his films. So it was with some relief that he found himself starring in an escapist children’s movie that has nothing to do with it. Yet two months before its release, Come Away hit the headlines – as a racism story.
Come Away is a fantasy about a fantasy; the whimsical tale of parents bringing up young children who just happen to be Peter Pan and Alice from Wonderland. Oyelowo plays the father, while Angelina Jolie plays the mother.

The trick to adapting Peter Pan is embracing that it’s a tragedy at its core. So many children’s stories are sadder and often more horrifying than they appear, though only in ways that become more clear once the reader grows up. Two of the most familiar English-language children’s stories, and among the most frequently adapted, […]

Meanwhile, the PVOD prison drama “The Informer” (Vertical) repeated at #1 at FandangoNow, Paramount’s horror entry “Spell” is first at Spectrum, and romance “After We Collided” from Briarcliff bested at Google Play. “Mortal” is a standard price entry, while “The Informer” is at $19.99 premium, with “Spell” at $9.99 finding a middle ground.

While the box office has been a scary place over the past eight months, it just got a little scarier (in a good way) thanks to the new Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton horror thriller Freaky, which debuted at No. 1 in North America this weekend with $3.7 million.
Universal and Blumhouse’s R-rated film about a serial killer who switches bodies with a teenage, high-school girl (Kathryn Newton) on Friday the 13th opened in 2,472 theaters and scared up an impressive $1,500 per-screen average. Freaky received mostly positive reviews and scored an 84% "Fresh" rating with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Overseas, the film added $1.9 million in its freshman frame, bringing its cumulative worldwide box office haul to $5.6 million. Not bad for a film with a reported budget of $6 million.
In second place was Focus Features’ Let Him Go, which pulled in $1.8 million in its second week, dropping off 55% from the previous frame. The R-rated...

It’s no secret that the box office space has been struggling to find life during the pandemic — and it seems to be even more difficult for the specialty box office space. As specialty films try to navigate the space by shifting to PVOD, digital, and virtual openings, some distributors continue to brave the landscape of shuttered theaters and strategize theatrical releases to keep the specialty box office afloat.
Neon’s buzzy Oscar offering Ammonite is the the most noticeable specialty box office title that was released in theaters this weekend. Even as Covid-19 infections seem to reach new heights on a daily basis, theatrical grosses remained stable; the top 10 accounted for a little less than $11 million. By every other macrostatistic, however, the results remain unsustainable. Of the 3,000 complexes currently open, about half with eight or more auditoriums, the average weekend take is $5,000-$6,000. In normal times, the average would be around $50,000. Aggregate grosses are around 10 percent-15 percent of normal; this weekend last year saw a top 10 of $90,000.
The disappointments this weekend start with “Freaky.” Trying to predict what the Universal and Blumhouse Productions horror comedy would do was an inexact science; in recent weeks, $4 million has been the ceiling for a wide release. The hope was a more mainstream entry like this one could see $6 million or better.
At $3.7 million, it didn’t. Is it the increased resistance to going out? Awareness that it will be available on premium VOD in three weeks?...

With her first live-action feature film under her belt, Oscar winner Brenda Chapman is setting her sights on the next big step: a possible return to the animation world in which she first made a name for herself and broke major barriers while doing it. In 1998, Chapman became the first woman to direct an animated feature from a major studio, thanks to DreamWorks Animation’s “The Prince of Egypt,” which followed her work writing such animated Disney classics as “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
Fresh off bowing her “Come Away” at Sundance, it was reported that Chapman was already teeing up her next project: a live-action hybrid feature based on Claribel Ortega’s YA novel “Ghost Squad,” but in a recent interview, the filmmaker told IndieWire she’s “kind of stepped away” from that project during the pandemic. “I decided to take...

For some, the prospect of former Pixar director Brenda Chapman (“Brave”) making her live-action debut will make “Come Away” seem exciting. For others, it’s the film’s literary conceit that appeals: What if Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan had been siblings? And then there’s the casting of Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo as the parents, which suggests certain possibilities in terms of how the story might deal with certain seldom-examined social dynamics within its period setting — possibilities that internet trolls have targeted with racist comments.
Alas, “Come Away” squanders all of these opportunities on a ponderous family drama that even Netflix (where concept is everything and quality is often beside the point) wasn’t interested in acquiring when it premiered at Sundance back in January. For her first live-action feature, Oscar-winning filmmaker Brenda Chapman was determined to play the hits, but with the kind of personal twist she’s put on animated classics like “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Brave” throughout her career. A fairy tale obsessive from the jump — she literally grew up reading Classics Illustrated Junior comic books featuring stories like “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast” — Chapman’s “Come Away” is a perfect fit for her talents and interests, plotting an inventive mash-up of both “Peter Pan” and “Alice in Wonderland” in a family-centric package.
The film, written by Marissa Kate Goodhill, serves as something of a prequel to the beloved stories involving the boy who wouldn’t grow up and the girl who falls into a wacky world through a rabbit hole. “Come Away” supposes, what if they were siblings? From there, the film weaves a...

Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland form the basis of Brenda Chapman’s fantastical children’s film Come Away. I say “children’s,” not “family,” because it’s unlikely anyone older than 12 will find much magic in this supremely surface-level story. It’s strange then that Chapman and scribe Marissa Kate Goodhill spend so much time lingering on the dark world of adults: gambling, debt collection, alcoholism, even child death. It’s unlikely kids will understand these issues, though they aren’t treated with enough complexity to engage adults. I’m struggling to work out for whom Come Away appeals.
Its premise—what if Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland were brother and sister?—is a bit contrived but leaves room for plenty of visual wonder, being that both stories concern imagination. Chapman (making her live-action debut after The Prince of Egypt and Brave) visualizes the imagination of her child protagonists,...

As it pertains to Hollywood, “vote brigading” — which can also be referred to as “vote stuffing,” “dislike mobs” and “review bombing” among other monikers — is the practice of augmenting user-generated ratings and reviews to influence the perception of a film, television series or other content. For the better part of the past decade, the practice has impacted Hollywood projects, including Marvel movies, Oscar winners and indie features alike.
