Junji Ito’s horror works are enough to give anyone the jitters of a lifetime. This holds especially true with his magnum opus Uzumaki. From popped eyeballs to body contortions, the series is a true nightmare. This extends to its anime adaptation that truly lives up to the horror. It is clear in the eeriness that is recreated in the soundtrack and fans can vouch for it.
Several fans took to Reddit to point out the series’ brilliance which is reflected in the soundtrack. From circular breathing to sirens, Colin Stetson recreated the horror impeccably through his music. The spirals are animated both visually and audibly through the painstaking efforts.
The Uzumaki effect is projected into the soundtrack.

Documentary “Shadowland” – which has its world premiere at Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest on Oct. 5 – was supposed to be a “happy story” set in the French Pyrenees, a place known for its mysteries.
Embracing magic and witchcraft, spiritual “seekers” from all paths of life settle there, hoping to find the greatest treasure – the Holy Grail – or experience supernatural encounters.
One of those was cult director Richard Stanley, who claimed he saw local deity the White Lady, earning the respect of the close-knit community. As well as being a long-time resident of the area, Stanley also worked as a tour guide there.
Stanley made his name with horror films like “Hardware” and “Dust Devil,” but after he was fired from “The Island of Dr. Moreau,” starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, he took a 20-plus year break from feature filmmaking before returning with 2019’s “Color Out of Space,” starring Nicolas Cage.

Adult Swim’s highly anticipated Junji Ito adaptation is animated cosmic and body horror of the highest degree that’s guaranteed to disturb seasoned genre fans.
“Become one with me and the spiral.”
Junji Ito has become one of the manga industry’s most prolific body horror storytellers and Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is definitely regarded as one of his strongest works. Uzumaki was originally serialized from 1998 to 1999 and its chapters were collected into three volumes than span nearly 650 pages. Ito’s works have been prone to adaptation — in both animation and live-action — but his style is incredibly hard to replicate, which has only reinforced why he’s become such a mainstream name in horror illustration. Junji Ito Collection, Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, and the 75-minute Ova, Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack, have all done their best, but amounted to flawed experiments.

Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the United States, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t going big on film.
More than 300 films screened at the 42nd Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival, which took place in Providence from Aug. 6 to 11: a diverse slate of narrative features, documentaries and short films represented 51 countries across the globe. The festival — one of 10 international fests that serve as official qualifiers for the Academy Awards’ live-action, animated and documentary short categories — received over 7,000 submissions this year.
For executive director Shawn M. Quirk, who has been with the festival for 13 years, Riiff has a two-pronged approach to serving filmmakers both in Rhode Island and beyond its borders. “It’s really about building this global community, as well as helping our local filmmakers who need that access,” Quirk tells THR.
“I love the idea of us being a global film [destination],” adds Quirk.

John Mulaney is talking about Marcia Clark.
To fans of the comedian, this shouldn’t come as a surprise — the former O.J. Simpson prosecutor has been a guest on his “Oh, Hello” Broadway show, the trial popped up in his stand-up, and Clark recently appeared on Netflix’s hilarious talk series “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA.”
“The O.J. Simpson trial was just an all-consuming experience for me as a kid, and I could talk about it for hours and hours,” Mulaney told IndieWire during a recent interview.

So…what is sci-fi? It’s not the easiest question to answer when “sci-fi elements” permeate so many of the biggest blockbusters: thought-provoking genre concepts flattened into one-size-fits-all franchise fodder that make countless titles “feel” and, on occasion, even look the same.
Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived in the past two years, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively.

If you read enough horror reviews or listen to enough horror podcasts, you’re bound to come across someone bemoaning the shoddy digital effects present in so many modern genre movies. As cranky as it sounds, it also makes sense—practicals are rare, violence is often digitized rather than staged, and CGI blood has unfortunately become the rule as opposed to the exception.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: This Is What You Get When Alpaca Etiquette Is Ignored
Every time I watch “Color Out of Space” I remember to celebrate the fact that none of my current responsibilities involve caring for alpacas (for either domestic or commercial purposes). Despite the off-brand llamas’ unofficial status as the Rolls Royce of even-toed ungulate mammals, Richard Stanley’s 2019 horror film makes raising them seem like an inconvenience that rivals the appearance of indescribable cosmic evils. Who on Earth has the time to examine unpasteurized alpaca milk for the presence of fennel?...

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

Strap on a bulletproof vest and prepare to make a shady deal or two because a Lord of War sequel is on the way. Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård are teaming up for Lords of War, with Vendome Pictures producing. Andrew Niccol directs from a script he wrote, with Cage reprising his role from the 2005 original, arms dealer Yuri Orlov. The plot includes a father-son twist, with Skarsgård playing Orlov’s son, Anton. In the Lord of War sequel, Anton “tries to top his father’s wrongs instead of stopping them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts.”
“There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best — ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate...

Isn’t it amazing to have Nicolas Cage back in cinemas?! There is truly is no one like the mercurial, surreal performer but of course we don’t mean he has been completely gone from our screens: it’s just a lot of his output in the last decade or so has seen him predominantly confined to the smaller ones. Still, in recent years, he has graced us with his presence in ways only The Cage can with some of his most outlandish work in Mandy, Willy’s Wonderland, Prisoners of the Ghostland, and Color Out of Space, each showcasing the actor’s penchant for the extreme, the expressionistic and the fascinating.
He went full meta last year with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a brilliant satire film that poked fun at his long filmography and his unique persona, one that showed an often-forgotten funny side that helped him in his early career.

For as long as we humans have been making art, we've been making art about the things that scare us. Horror as a genre has existed in every form, from macabre paintings to spooky songs to the tremendously popular horror movies that have terrified generations of thrillseekers who love the creeping dread of heroes pitted against monsters of every shape and size. Many different aspects of our culture have been indelibly marked by horror -- including the seemingly innocent and innocuous board game.
Of course, there are plenty of movies about games turning deadly, but we're not talking about your ouija boards or even party games like "Bodies Bodies Bodies." No, we're here to discuss friends turning into traitorous villains, vintage monsters raiding cursed towns, hotels you never check out of, and endless onslaughts of ghosts. Our list covers 10 perfect pairings between a spooky, scary movie night and blood-curdling board...

Ahead of its world premiere at SXSW, Rlje Films and its sister brands under AMC Networks have acquired the North American rights to the horror/thriller, “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster.” Those brands include Shudder and AllBlk, all of which share a parent company. The horror-thriller is debuting in the Austin-based festival’s “Visions” category, a special program that “champions audacious, risk-taking artists in the new cinema landscape.”
The movie follows a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, the teen embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. It’s a journey inspired by Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”
Rlje will release the film in theaters this summer. Shudder and Allblk will follow with streaming debuts later in 2023.
The film is the directorial debut of Bomani J. Story, who also penned the script.

Nicolas Cage as Dracula?
Nicholas Hoult as Renfield?
Sign us up, all the way up!
Universal Pictures dropped the official trailer for Renfield today, which offers a unique (and hilarious) take on the man tasked with caring for Dracula.
This Renfield has sold his soul to Dracula for some pretty wicked powers that allow him to compete with the greatest superheroes.
But his job is anything but superheroic.
Feeding Dracula is a full-time job, and ol' Drac's got some pretty specific tastes, such as a bus full of children, to satisfy his cravings.
Renfield has no idea how to extricate himself from the situation, so he attends a support group, seemingly for people dealing with overbearing bosses.
Even the best support group would find it difficult to counsel Renfield with his particular boss, but it looks like they give him some useful ideas to get started.

Arrow swings into 2023 with a disc of a horror thriller ‘with issues’ — but appointing it with intriguing extras. Sandra Dee gets her perky nose all tangled up in an inter-dimensional conspiracy run by sneaky occultist Dean Stockwell — and we know that it’s all going to lead to a sacrificial altar. Roger Corman designer Daniel Haller directed this cross between a Poe picture and a psychedelic epic, for good old American-International.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Movie: "A Wounded Fawn"
Where You Can Stream It: Shudder
The Pitch: Rod Serling's opening narration for "The Twilight Zone" teased "a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind." It's in this realm that filmmaker Travis Stevens is most comfortable, and the one he presents in "A Wounded Fawn." Stevens' third directed feature is his gnarliest thus far, and bodes well for the kind of original horror movie that fans have clamored for since the first jump scare.
The whole bloody affair of "A Wounded Fawn" concerns jaded museum curator Meredith Tanning (Sarah Lind) who lives out this writer's personal nightmare of jumping back into the dating pool only to find herself in a serial killer's living room.

After playing Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Elijah Wood expanded his eclectic career by starring in a wide array of films. Despite being invested in several genres, Wood is partial to horror, having started his career in a made-for-tv horror flick titled "Child in the Night." Over the course of his career, Wood starred in several horror offerings, from 1993's "The Good Son" to 2012's "Maniac." Taking his love for horror a step further, Wood founded his production company, SpectreVision, which has churned out standout titles such as "Mandy," "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night," and "Color Out of Space."
As Wood has been championing the indie horror movement in subtle yet significant ways, he was asked about the opening and closing films he would choose for a Halloween-centered film festival. His answer for the closing film is John Carpenter's "Halloween,...

Nicolas Cage is the kind of actor who can make oddball roles of any variety work in his favor. Over the course of his long and eventful career, Cage has had several meme-worthy moments, which are almost always endearingly hilarious. Take the "How'd it get burned?!!" scene from 2006's "The Wicker Man" as an example — the scene stands out due to Cage's manic delivery of the line in an otherwise underwhelming folk horror remake. However, Cage's ability to take on complex roles and imbue them with dark humor is on full display in films like "Mandy" and "Wild At Heart," and this ability reaches its peak in the critically-acclaimed culinary drama, "Pig."
So, when Richard Stanley conceived the idea of a harrowing Lovecraftian cosmic horror movie about a family hounded by an imperceptible alien species, Cage emerged as the natural choice to play the family patriarch, Nathan Gardner. Stanley's "Color Out Of Space...

In “Glorious,” J.K. Simmons plays the voice of an ominous Lovecraftian god lurking behind the glory hole of a random roadside restroom. That’s practically all the pitch Shudder audiences need to sample this not-nearly-as-sick-as-it-sounds oddity from genre-movie superbrain Rebekah McKendry, whose expertise in all things horror outstrips her knowledge of the basics of men’s bathrooms — including what they look like and how dudes behave when they become aware that there is someone/thing heavy-breathing in the neighboring stall. Then again, getting creative with such logistics hasn’t impacted “Porky’s” place in film culture, so why should it be a deal breaker here?
It’s just that, even at 80 minutes, “Glorious” feels four times too long for what it is. Though the movie’s premise may seem juvenile, director Rebekah McKendry navigates by an inexplicable parallel-dimension sense of “good taste”: She makes it a point to avoid...

Richard Stanley's sci-fi Lovecraftian horror, "Color Out of Space," marked a comeback for the director after a span of 20 years. Best known for "Hardware" and "Dust Devils," which morphed into cult classics years after their release, Stanley largely stepped away from the industry in the '90s following his negative experiences as the director of "The Island of Dr. Moreau." His 2019 movie is an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story, "The Color Out of Space," and was intended to be the first film in a working trilogy of Lovecraft-based movies, with "The Dunwich Horror" being the next project.

Pig (2021).At the end of 2021, Nicolas Cage finally renounced the title of actor, preferring it to the more classical and, in many ways, liberating term of the thespian.1 This transition puts a lot in its place: the polyphonic structure of Cage's acting method, his unorthodox approach to choosing films, and the constant incorporation of his personality into them. A casual glance at the recent filmography of the "once-great artist" reveals that the only key detail in it is Cage himself, mired in memes and internet tribute, but continuing to tell his story through the guises of the characters he plays. It is customary in Hollywood to treat the acting profession with a frightening seriousness that Cage was always completely devoid of. The actor's dissimilarity to his older contemporaries, heavily influenced by the Lee Strasberg school of the Method, was bound to play a cruel trick on him sooner or later.

Say what you will about Nicolas Cage’s films, but you can never accuse the man of phoning it in. Over the course of his 40+ year career, Cage has starred in Oscar-nominated prestige flicks, direct-to-video schlock, crowd pleasing blockbusters, introspective indies, and everything in between. Throughout it all, he’s remained dedicated to his craft, making interesting choices that may seem absurd to some but are always informed by his deep knowledge of cinema history.
In a Reddit Ama, Cage said, “I think many of the choices I’ve made have been inspired by film stars from the silent era, as well as cultural expression of performance like Kabuki and some of the Golden Age actors like [James] Cagney, so I don’t know how to say I’ve done something new because those elements are always on my mind.”
What you may call a “crazy Cage performance” is just an...

Nicolas Cage has had enough of the press taking shots at him for his era of straight-to-vod movies. The Oscar winner had a string of theatrical flops around 2014, including duds such as “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” and so his career pivoted almost exclusively to VOD titles like “The Runner,” “Pay the Ghost,” “The Trust” and more. Anyone who claimed Cage didn’t care about his career during this era was dead wrong.
“People thought I didn’t care. I did. I was caring,” Cage recently told Rolling Stone. “I think that I did some of the best work of my life in that so-called ‘direct to video’ period. ‘Massive Talent’ was in that group. ‘Mandy’ was in that group. ‘Pig,’ ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans,’ ‘Joe,’ ‘Mom and Dad,’ ‘Color Out of Space’ — they were all in that group. ‘The Runner’ I thought was terrific.
