Hollywood drama tends to get a little spicy at times, and when things go south, it often shows how hard it is to go about writing, filming, directing, and acting in a movie. This is what the Fifty Shades of Grey controversies conveyed to movie lovers all over the world.

Issues stemmed from the initial release itself, with the controversies revolving around the book’s writer and Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed the first film and dipped right after. Fans also had issues with how things were portrayed on screen, and the casting, and then there was also a rumored feud between both lead actors, which they debunked.

Sunday Am Update: Here’s how the weekend is settling: Ryan Reynolds is first with Marvel Studios/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine‘s third weekend at $54.2M. Blake Lively is second, but with a very strong $50M for It Ends With Us.
This is the first time that two movies in August both played to north of $50M.
The expectation is that the Justin Baldoni directed and starring movie based on the Colleen Hoover novel will have a good Sunday. Sony’s Where the Crawdads Sing only eased -13% off its Saturday. These female lit feature adaptations may fall on Saturday as the fan fevered turnout occurs on Thursday and Friday, but sometimes they they can see a matinee audience recovery on Sunday, which is what is expected here.

Though they’ve worked together only once (the animated “Happy Feet”), Australian director George Miller and recent AFI Life Achievement Award winner Nicole Kidman share a distinction this week. Both of their most recent films lead on respective home viewing charts.
For Warner Bros. and Miller, the #1 status for the newly released “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is positive news after its very disappointing theatrical results. But even more than a normal high-return PVOD release, it is available for a $24.99 digital purchase price rather than the standard initial $19.99 rental.
Kidman has provided an eclectic filmography that spans from Jane Campion and Lars von Trier to “Batman Forever” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Her latest, rom-com “A Family Affair” where she credibly plays at the age of 57 the love interest for Zac Efron, testifies to a star quality along with enduring talent. Netflix has a couple of major series airing all or part of their final seasons in July 2024. The hit Spanish drama Elite is set to premiere its eighth and final season in full this month with one final mystery (July 26), Vikings: Valhalla is setting off on one final adventure with its third season (July 11), and Cobra Kai is also entering its swan song era with the first part of its final sixth season arriving on Netflix July 18.
The most notable movie offering this month is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (July 3). Thirty years after his last case, Eddie Murphy returns as the titular detective Axel Foley, teaming up with old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton) to uncover a conspiracy and keep his daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) safe.
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month. Note that Netflix marks its international offerings with that respective country’s two-letter country code.

John Krasinski’s “If” (Paramount) needs strong post-theatrical results to make it a success. Initial results from PVOD ($19.99 rental), which reached #1 right away at both iTunes and Fandango, suggest it is headed in the right direction.
In the short term, it might be able to sustain that pace; its main competition will be this week’s release of the underperforming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” More critical is whether it can sustain multiple weeks at higher levels. With a $110 million before-marketing cost, $180 million in worldwide gross needs supplementing.
Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is sustaining its run. Netflix’s $20 million worldwide acquisition, after an above-average 10 days as #1 on its top 10 movie viewing chart, is still at #2. “Trigger Warning,” a far less-acclaimed Netflix original, is currently #1. The action/thriller title, which stars Jessica Alba and is the American debut for Indonesian director Mouly Surya, was filmed nearly three years ago.

Back in 2017, Robinne Lee dropped by a local L.A. news station for an interview promoting her role in “Fifty Shades Darker,” the second film in the steamy series based on books by E.L. James.
“You’re venturing out a little bit now with a new novel…” the Kcal anchor said to Lee, whose filmography already included “Deliver Us From Eva,” “Hitch” and “13 Going on 30,” teeing the actor up to mention her career pivot. “I have a novel coming out this spring called ‘The Idea of You,’” Lee replied, grinning.
The premise was unique: A divorced mother and art gallery owner, living in L.A. on the precipice of turning 40, takes her daughter to a concert meet-and-greet and the 20-year-old lead singer of the band falls in love with her. The story, Lee explained, was “as much about a love story complicated by celebrity and the underbelly of...

The Emma Stone Oscar moment might just trigger some deja vu for the chronically online folks, which bears a striking resemblance with the iconic Dakota Johnson wardrobe mishap at the People’s Choice Awards. Dakota Johnson‘s iconic “Well, it’s not like nobody here hasn’t already seen my b–bs” line has undoubtedly become one of the most viral moments on the internet. For the unversed, Johnson won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress in 2016.
However, during her acceptance speech, she accidentally broke her dress while hugging Leslie Mann, who was presenting her the award alongside Alison Brie.

When Sony decided to expand its Spider-Man Universe with Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web, everyone was ecstatic as the film would feature more characters from the Marvel comic books and it would feature an all-female cast featuring Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, all led by none other than the Persuasion actress. However, the film has been nothing but a major box office disaster.

E.L. James' original "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy is undoubtedly the most successful piece of fanfiction ever published. James turned the teen-friendly romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular "Twilight" franchise into an erotic reverie explored by the mysterious (and quite wealthy) entrepreneur Christian Grey and college journalist Kate Kavanaugh. It was a Bdsm gateway drug that opened up a healthy portal for kink-curious young adults. You didn't have to feel like a freak for wanting to do what conservative society deemed freaky.
Was it good literature? Does it matter? James' novels have sold hundreds of millions of copies and been translated into 52 different languages. They are adored by people who never knew they wanted to see Bella and Edward engage in consensual sadomasochism. I am happy they have these stories in their lives. What matters, at least when it comes to my bailiwick,...

Jamie Dornan "hid" in the country after reviews for 'Fifty Shades of Grey' came out.The 41-year-old actor faced "ridicule" for the first time in his career when the first film in the erotic rom-com franchise - which was based on the books by E. L. James - hit screens in 2015, and he decided to keep a low profile and not read anything. He told Radio 4's 'Desert Island Discs': "I think I hid."I am coming off the back of career-altering reviews for 'The Fall' to just ridicule, almost."The flick's director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, 56, and her actor husband, Aaron, 33, let Dornan and his family stay at their country abode. He continued: "They let us have their place in the country and we sort of hid there for a while and just shut ourselves from the world a bit and then sort of came out the other side.

Jamie Dornan has hit out at film critics’ “snobbery”. The ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ star, 41, has spent much of his time being derided as a “model-turned-actor” and his turn as kink-obsessed billionaire Christian Grey in the ‘Fifty Shades’ franchise earned him his first Golden Raspberry award for Worst Actor in 2015, with film writers constantly slating his performance in the trio of movies. Jamie has now told the new issue of Radio Times magazine: “I knew there was going to be a lot of hostility about the project because there was a lot of hostility around the books, and a lot of it is literary snobbery. People like to (criticise)… very successful things: if you have something that’s hugely successful and sold as many copies as those books did, while critics didn’t like them. “Oxbridge-educated critics who think they are the most important people in the world… I’m somebody who seeks out challenges.

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy grossed $1.3 billion worldwide but each film was absolutely trashed by critics, and that’s something Jamie Dornan knew was coming.
While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jamie Dornan discussed taking on the role of Bdsm-loving businessman Christian Grey for Fifty Shades of Grey. Dornan originally lost out on the role to Charlie Hunnam, but when Hunnam had to drop out due to his commitments to Sons of Anarchy, Dornan was brought back.
“When I didn’t get it, I felt a bit of relief because I knew that guy is going to get wrecked here,” Dornan said. “He maybe felt the same… suddenly there I was, but with way less time to make a decision. Prior to 2015, Dakota Johnson’s career had consisted of mostly minor roles in films, along with a starring role in a short-lived sitcom — nothing that won her much attention or acclaim. That all changed when, seemingly against type, Johnson was cast as Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of the controversial blockbuster book by E.L. James. Fifty Shades of Grey, along with sequels Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, suddenly turned Johnson into one of Hollywood’s top rising stars. Speaking at the time of the final film’s release, Johnson said she would always be grateful for the films and the character James had created. Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Bob Odenkirk will have a large padded shoulder jacket to fill when he plays Tommy Wiseau’s iconic role of Johnny in an upcoming remake of the campy cult classic The Room.
“I am very excited for the feature-length The Room remake (Shot mostly on greenscreen) in which the Tommy Wiseau role is taken over by Bob Odenkirk — and it’s not played as a joke,” announced podcaster Justin Decloux on Twitter earlier this week.
“This is real. This is true,” Odenkirk added a day later. “And let me tell you, I tried my best to Sell every line, as honestly as I could… and I had a Blast.”
The project is being made with the involvement of the organization Acting for a Cause and it will benefit the AIDS research charity amfAR. Not much else is confirmed about The Room remake except for a series of social media posts...

It has been a banner six months for pop superstar Taylor Swift. In August she made history at the VMAs by becoming the first artist to win Video of the Year thrice — and the first to win the award for a self-directed video. In October, the release of her 10th studio album “Midnights” shattered records; it became Spotify’s most-streamed album in one day, sold over a million copies in the US in the first week (making Swift the only act to have accomplished this feat five times), debuted atop the Billboard 200 (tying Barbra Streisand for the most number-one albums by a woman), and occupied the entire top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (a first in the chart’s history).
The following month she added four more Grammy nominations to her tally, including Song of the Year for her magnum opus “Atwtmvtvftv” — that’s “All Too Well (Ten-Minute Version...

Taylor Swift’s pop cultural territory expands with every move she makes, whether it’s re-recording her old albums to have complete ownership over them, appearing in films, directing shorts or occasionally writing songs for stories on a whim, like she did most recently with “Carolina” for “Where the Crawdads Sing” (now playing in theaters).
The eerie ballad is the latest in a long line of songs that Swift has drummed up to accompany certain productions, some of which she has appeared in and others where the music was her main contribution.
In honor of “Carolina,” which the singer announced in her signature secretive style of dropping hints in an Instagram feed, TheWrap has rounded up all of Swift’s other songs written for or released with movies or television shows. We’ve also made a Spotify playlist to experience this set of songs.

Dakota Johnson is setting the record straight about her time on the set of the Fifty Shades of Grey movies which were adapted from E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy of books. The first film debuted in 2015 followed by the second film Fifty Shades Darker in 2017, and Fifty Shades Freed in 2018. Johnson, plays Anastasia Steele alongside Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey.
The actress spoke with Vanity Fair and reflected on her time shooting the series and butting heads with James who commanded full creative control that squashed any ideas or input.
“She had a lot of creative control, all day, every day, and she just demanded that certain things happen,” the actress said of the author, who was also one of the film’s producers. “There were parts of the books that just wouldn’t work in a movie, like the inner monologue, which was at times incredibly cheesy.

Anastasia Steele actor describes constant disagreements on the set of the hit erotic thriller due to disagreements with Fifty Shades author El James
Dakota Johnson has described the making of the hit erotic drama Fifty Shades of Grey as “crazy” and that she “signed up to do a very different version of the film [she] ended up making”.
Johnson, who is currently appearing in award-winning indie comedy Cha Cha Real Smooth and about to release an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Persuasion, spoke to Vanity Fair about Fifty Shades of Grey, in which she starred opposite Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey in a 2015 film version of El James’ best selling novel directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Two further films, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, were released in 2017 and 2018 respectively, with James Foley replacing Taylor-Johnson as director and over which James was given what has been described as “unprecedented control”.

As Swifties patiently wait for Taylor Swift to release the next installment of her Taylor’s Version album re-records, the singer-songwriter is keeping fans satiated with the release of “Carolina,” a new song written for forthcoming movie, Where the Crawdads Sing. The film, out July 15, is an adaption of American author Delia Owens’ 2018 novel of the same name.
Alluding to the film’s backwoods setting, the track evokes the elegiac tone of Appalachian folk ballads as Swift’s voice, otherworldly and siren-like, is accentuated by sweeping string arrangements and the gentle strum of a guitar.

Taylor Swift’s song “Carolina,” which she wrote specifically as the theme for “Where the Crawdads Sing,” will officially drop tonight — and we can’t wait to hear how she captures that haunting, misty marsh in which main character Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones) lives. Poor and surviving on her wits alone in the wilderness, her family having left her when she was young, Kya seems like the exact kind of hero Swift’s delicate songwriting can tap into. The confirmation comes via the artist’s Instagram stories, posted early Thursday morning.
The “Cardigan” singer first announced that she wrote “Carolina” for the upcoming film in March on Instagram, where she posted a clip of the trailer and a snippet of the single accompanying it.

Taylor Swift will release her new song, “Carolina,” a theme for the film “Where the Crawdads Sing,” tonight, she revealed on her social media this morning.
The song, which plays over the movie’s end credits, arrives three weeks in advance of the release of “Where the Crawdads Sing,” due in theaters July 15.
The coming drop was revealed in an image on the artist’s Instagram Story. She didn’t include any additional text about the tune, although it’s likely she would have more to say when the song arrives tonight.

Michael Douglas and Christoph Waltz will star as former president Ronald Reagan and his Soviet counterpart Mikhail Gorbachev in a limited series in development at Paramount TV Studios.
Douglas will play the 40th U.S. president while Waltz will play Gorbachev, who was General Secretary of the Communist Party for the Soviet Union from 1985 until its dissolution in 1991. The series is called “Reagan & Gorbachev.”
The project, which currently doesn’t have a home, chronicles the 1986 Reagan-Gorbachev Summit in Iceland, which is described by many historians as the turning point in the Cold War. The two-day gathering in Reykjavik laid the groundwork for a historic arms accord the following year and is considered one of Reagan’s finest moments as president. The series will be told from the vantage point of Ken Adelman, who was Reagan’s arms control director.
The series is being adapted from Adelman’s book “Reagan at...

Exclusive: Paramount Television Studios has locked Michael Douglas and Christoph Waltz for Reagan & Gorbachev, a limited series that James Foley will direct. Douglas will play President Ronald Reagan, and Waltz will play Mikhail Gorbachev, in a series that B. Garida adapted from the Ken Adelman’s book Reagan at Reykjavik: Forty-Eight Hours That Ended the Cold War. Adelman was Reagan’s arms control director. The package is coming together quickly, and it will be shopped to broadcasters and streamers immediately.
Douglas, Waltz, Foley and Youtchi von Lintel will be the executive producers.
The series tells the dramatic account of the historic 1986 Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Iceland, the definitive weekend that was the key turning point in the Cold War — from the vantage point of Reagan’s arms control director. The leaders met for a 48-hour summit in Reykjavik. Planned as a short, inconsequential gathering to outline future talks, the meeting quickly turned to major international issues,...

It might be a bit surprising to see the beloved Judi Dench in contention for an award calling out the worst achievements in film, but such was the effect of “Cats,” the widely ridiculed movie musical that leads this year’s Razzie noms. The good news, though, is that even if she wins she’ll be in good company. More than a dozen Oscar-winning actors have won Razzies too.
SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today
Dench, a Best Supporting Actress winner for “Shakespeare in Love” (1998), is now up for Worst Supporting Actress for her role as Old Deuteronomy, the leader of the Jellicle cats who was actually played by male actors on Broadway and the West End. This Razzies category alone has gone to Oscar winners Faye Dunaway and Kim Basinger.
Dunway also won Worst Actress for “Mommie Dearest” (1981). That category has gone to even more Oscar champs: Liza Minnelli...

Following the massive success of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy, Universal and author E. L. James are reteaming on the scribe’s next novel as the studio has optioned the rights to “The Mister,” James’ 2019 best-selling romance.
Rights for the book, which recently hit the market, sparked a heated bidding war. James, who produced every film in the “Fifty Shades” trilogy, returns to produce this adaptation, which tells the story of a wealthy British aristocrat who falls in love with his Albanian housekeeper, unaware that she is on the run from human traffickers.
“The Mister” was on the New York Times Best Seller list for nine weeks and has sold in 33 territories/languages internationally.
Before her elevation to chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group last year, then-chairman of Universal Pictures Donna Langley was pivotal to securing the “Fifty Shades” book series in 2012. Langley and Universal beat out almost every...
