R.E.M. have released a new lyric video for their 1986 song “I Believe” to encourage fans to vote in the presidential election.
The video was created by longtime R.E.M. art director Chris Billheimer. It draws inspiration from the handmade designs frontman Michael Stipe used to create for himself during the Fables of the Reconstruction tour and the politically-themed tee-shirts he wore to 1991 MTV VMAs, where the band used their acceptance speech for Best Video for “Losing My Religion” to draw attention to causes like gun control, reproductive rights, voting rights,...

Naomi Scott stars as global pop sensation Skye Riley embarking on a world tour in Parker Finn’s Smile 2, marking the actor’s first foray into horror. While Skye Riley makes for an extremely complex character for any actor to tackle, Scott handles it with seeming ease while also bringing her singing/songwriting talents to the role.
Parker Finn studied pop artists like FKA Twigs, Sia, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Olivia Rodrigo, and Tate McRae (who has a songwriting credit on Smile 2 for “Grieved You”) to capture Skye Riley’s journey and immense tour pressures with authenticity. The filmmaker and his team collaborated with the songwriting duo Take A Daytrip (Denzel Michael-Akil Baptiste and David Charles Marshall Biral) and songwriter Alexis Idarose Kesselman to develop five original songs for Skye’s album “Too Much for One Heart” – “Grieved You,” “New Brain,” “Death of Me,” “Just My Name,“ and “Blood on White Satin.

Sanfic Industria, the industry section of the Santiago International Film Festival running over August 18-25, is showcasing a slew of promising new fiction and non-fiction projects at its Santiago Labs. “We were overwhelmed by the number of entries this year, a 55% uptick from 2023,” said Sanfic Industria director Gabriela Sandoval, a co-founder of the festival.
Out of the 28 selected Santiago Lab projects, 12 are directed by women. “Among our many objectives, we have always aimed to expand opportunities for women filmmakers by equipping them with the essential tools and creating pathways for their success,” said Sandoval, a producer herself at Storyboard Media alongside festival co-founder Carlos Nuñez. She added that nearly 50% of the Santiago Lab projects are produced by women.

Producer Steven Paul — who is said to be among suitors to take control of Paramount Global and has a deal to co-produce and finance films with the National Amusement-controlled company — has been found liable for copyright infringement in a lawsuit accusing him of manufacturing and distributing counterfeit DVDs of faith-based film I Believe, a jury has concluded.
A Riverside jury on Thursday ordered Paul and his affiliated distribution companies Echo Bridge Acquisition Corp and Sp Releasing to pay roughly $150,000 to independent production company, Harvest Aid, which brought the lawsuit.
In a statement, Echo Bridge vice president Matt Otto said the decision will be appealed. “Even though the amount is small and has no effect on our businesses, Echo Bridge is obviously disappointed in the result in this nuisance suit and we’re surprised at a jury decision contrary to the evidence,” he added. “We’ve never even been accused of...

Last February, Caroline Polachek shared one of the best albums of 2023: her fourth solo LP, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. Now, on Valentine’s Day, she’s back with Desire, I Want to Turn Into You: Everasking Edition, a new version of the album featuring seven additional tracks and four new songs.
The new Everasking Edition includes the previously-released duet version of “Butterfly Net” featuring Weyes Blood, as well as the song Polachek premiered on Stephen Colbert’s show last October, “Dang.” Also featured are four new songs, titled “Meanwhile,” “Coma,” “Gambler’s Prayer,” and “Spring Is Coming with a Strawberry In the Mouth,” the latter of which is a cover of an Operating Theatre song.
Rounding out the expanded tracklist is an acoustic version of her song “I Believe.” Last year, Polachek delivered an unplugged rendition of the tune for her whimsical Tiny Desk concert.

Richard Dawkins is not moved by religious or otherwise supernatural claims. He was, however, so moved by an Elvis Presley song that he came to the conclusion that heaven itself wanted him to hear it. Interestingly, he agreed with the track’s lyrics on a deep level. Here’s a look at how Dawkins lost his faith and how Elvis found his own form of spirituality.
Richard Dawkins connected with the view of nature in 1 Elvis Presley song
In his 2013 book An Appetite for Wonder, Dawkins said he was raised Anglican. However, he became disillusioned with Christianity as a young man due to the doctrine of original sin. He still believed in God because he felt the glories of the natural world pointed to the existence of a designer. He was also a huge fan of the “Blue Suede Shoes” singer. “I worshiped Elvis and I was a strong believer in a non-denominational creator god,...

As big a deal as it was to become the first “American Idol” winner on Broadway, Fantasia Barrino looks back on her experience replacing Tony winner Lachanze as Celie in “The Color Purple” with a certain level of sorrow. “No one told me how to come out of the character,” said the Grammy-winning singer and actress to IndieWire. “My life was pretty crazy [at that moment], so I was carrying my cross and Celie’s cross at the same time, and that was overload. That was heavy. And so when I was done with it, I was like, ‘I’m done. I would never do this again. I would never step into her shoes again.’”
Coming up on two decades ago, Barrino became the winner of Season 3 of “American Idol” at only 19 years old. Standing on stage belting “I Believe” as tears streamed down her face, and silver confetti rained down, the young single mother from High Point,...

Fantasia Barrino is opening up about the challenges she faced following her win on American Idol.
The star of The Color Purple revealed in a recent interview that the years after being crowned the winner of season three of the singing competition were difficult for her financially.
“It wasn’t easy,” Barrino told People in an interview. “I lost a lot. I lost everything.”
Barrino took first place on American Idol in 2004. In 2006, her father sued her over his portrayal in her memoir titled “Life Is Not a Fairy Tale.” Barrino also survived an overdose of aspirin and sleeping aids in 2010.
The singer and actress said that her difficulties were in part due to her being “very, very green” in the industry after winning the talent show and being launched into stardom.

Introducing Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, ‘The Color Purple’s’ Young Celie: ‘This Is Work I Was Meant to Do’
Turning 30 is always a memorable moment, but “The Color Purple” actor Phylicia Pearl Mpasi rang in her third decade with a birthday serenade from Oprah Winfrey.
Coincidentally, Mpasi’s birthday (November 16) fell on another special occasion: the first screening of the musical reimagining of “The Color Purple.” The atmosphere was charged with anticipation since this was the debut of the film before critics and press, but the mood backstage was particularly jovial since it was the first time the cast — Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey and Mpasi, as well as Winfrey, producer Scott Sanders and director Blitz Bazawule — had assembled since wrapping production in 2022. But there was an extra element of emotion for Mpasi, since “The Color Purple” marks her feature film debut.

In response to her Golden Globe nomination Monday for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in The Color Purple, Fantasia Barrino starts the conversation with gratitude as she swore, after playing Celie on Broadway in the musical adaptation, she would never play the character again.
“I’ve said in Interviews before that I would never play this role again because of post-traumatic stress, but I am so glad that I didn’t allow fear to stand in my way,” she said after this morning’s nominations were revealed.
Barrino first rose to fame in 2004 when she won the third season of American Idol with her powerful, raspy voice and emotional performances. After releasing her debut song “I Believe,” which later became the fastest-selling single in history by an Idol contestant, she released her first album. It debuted at No. 1 and was certified platinum.

Caroline Polachek appeared on The Late Show to debut her new single, “Dang.” Dressed as a professor of sorts, Polachek performed the song in front of a lecture screen that switched slides as she sang.
“Dang” follows Polachek’s second solo LP, Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, which she released earlier this year. The song, produced by Polachek and Cecile Believe with additional production by Danny L Harle, is leftover from the album’s recording sessions. Polachek has been teasing the track for the past month, dropping it in DJ sets.

Caroline Polachek recently stopped by the NPR office for a Tiny Desk Concert, performing tracks from her fantastic February 2023 album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You.
With a tuning fork in hand, Polachek kicked off the four-song setlist with “Pretty In Possible.” While the Tiny Desk setting doesn’t quite match her usual dark, medieval-chic aesthetic, she still managed to bring her enchanting sense of whimsy, seemingly getting lost in her own music — that is, until she needed a swig of water, which she took from an antique-looking goblet.
Tiny Desk Concerts also aren’t usually the type of venue where artists encourage audience participation, but leave it to Polachek to get the whole room involved during “Sunset,” leading everyone behind the camera in a unison hand-clapped beat. The Stories Behind Whitney Houston’s Unreleased Gospel Songs: “She Left Healing Music for the World”
When music executive Steven Abdul Khan Brown was making his way to the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, he was blown away by the beautiful sound he heard as he walked closer to the parish.
One of those voices? A teenage Whitney Houston.
“That’s scary — whoa,” he thought, recalling the moment more than 40 years later in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Why haven’t I ever been here before?”
Khan Brown, also a Newark native who had been working with Kool & the Gang and Phyllis Hyman, was encouraged to check out the talented musicians at New Hope, where Cissy Houston worked as minister of music. Khan Brown met the matriarch and a big-voiced Whitney, who blew him away as soon as she began singing.
“Lord, I’ve died and went to heaven,” Khan Brown recalls of her performance. “I thought my ears were going through something.

Polachek returns with her first full-length project since 2019’s Pang. That album — her first album — cemented her reputation as a gothic, romantic vocalist.
She appeared as an opener for Dua Lipa and headlined several concerts of her own. Now, this singer turns toward desire with the February 2023 collection, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You.

Caroline Polachek has dropped a new song, “Blood and Butter,” and shared the track list for her upcoming album, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, which is set to arrive (aptly) on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.
Co-produced by Polachek and Danny L. Harle, “Blood and Butter” is an enveloping tune with flourishes of trance-y dance music and the global pop of Peter Gabriel. “American Idol” auditions continued with the fifth episode of Season 20 on Monday, March 21. This installment of the ABC reality TV competition saw judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie wrapping up initial tryouts and handing out the final Platinum Ticket to Hollywood.
So who was the best of the night? And did these aspiring stars choose the right songs? Below I rank each hopeful from the least impressive (but with room to grow) to a possible Season 20 frontrunner. I also throw in a song suggestion or artist I’d love to hear them cover.

10. Saylor: Nobody should go through what this contestant has so I sincerely hope that her father sees this audition and reconnects with her. Saying that, nerves played a factor in this audition despite a perfect song choice for her voice.

The Jonas Brothers have officially kicked off their Happiness Begins tour! On Wednesday, Kevin, Joe, and Nick hit the stage at the American Airlines Arena in Miami to perform some of their greatest hits. The night was full of surprises as the brothers sang some of their most recent singles, a few of their solo songs, and some incredibly nostalgic tracks from their very first album. Honestly, it was everything we could have hoped for.
The show also included a special appearance from Sebastián Yatra, Daddy Yankee, and Natti Natasha as they sang their new Latin song, "Runaway," for the first time live. While there are bound to be even more surprises later in the tour, we can't help but obsess over all the performance videos on social media.

Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.

Spill a drink and smash the glass for the late, great Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks, one of the most humane, compassionate, emotionally raw songwriters punk rock ever coughed up, not to mention the funniest. He twisted all the gender codes of rock & roll, casually shrugging off the masculine clichés punk inherited, pouring his heart out into three-minute vignettes. “Ever Fallen In Love,” “Get on Our Own,” “What Do I Get?,” “I Don’t Know What to Do With My Life” — these songs were emotionally urgent enough to make his peers sound like drooling cartoons.

A Wrinkle in Time is a film that demands a very pointed perspective, and while that may not be the kiss of death for what is clearly a family-oriented story, it needn’t have been the case. With that in mind, this is a film that divides its audience and renders itself enjoyable only for those who are young enough to be mesmerized by glittery landscapes and floating and/or flying creatures. Those young enough to find themselves enraptured by the general sense of wonder that simply is storytelling will likely find much to enjoy, but even still the overall effect is closer to that of an amusement park ride than something that truly has a story. Meg (Storm Reid) is likable enough and “everygirl” enough that audiences will quickly find themselves rooting for her, and the Mrs. trio are odd and magical enough to instill a sense of adventure in the target audience.
