Make the Best of Us: Bing’s ‘Youth’ Cycle Expands Into the Gloom
The middle part of Wang Bing’s Youth trilogy, Youth (Hard Times) perhaps more properly addresses the bleak realities of his observational endeavor, cobbled together into a cohesive structure from footage shot between 2014 and 2019. Following the Cannes premiered 2023 film Youth (Spring) (read review), which felt a rather cynical moniker for subjects tethered to Sisyphean work routines in their prime, his second installment, which appears to be more systematically edited into a time frame from 2015, suggests a more blatant, world weary scope. At a running time of nearly four hours, its immersive, repetitive structure, while inherently Bing’s signature, feels more punishing if only because there’s no real room for levity in its lengthy, often grueling discourse of late teens and twenty-somethings struggling to make ends meet in thankless textile shops.…...

While I advocate for nontraditional rom-coms with a bloodthirsty bite, Your Monster struggles to tame mismatching tones. It's a hairy concept — what happens if your childhood boogeyman has a crush on you? Filmmaker Caroline Lindy approaches "Beauty and the Beast" meet-cutes from a horror protagonist's perspective, but bubbly cuteness detrimentally outweighs the script's darker leanings. Date night sweetness and flesh-torn grotesqueries don't play nice together, which is a downer as the film fails to unify its hybridized approach. The best genre romances find harmony between warmed hearts and spilled guts, while examples like Your Monster fail to earn monstrous moments.
Melissa Barrera is a dream romantic lead as Laura Franco, an actress recovering from a cancer-related surgery. Laura's depressed, having been dumped by her playwright ex-boyfriend Jacob (Edmund Donovan) while still hooked to hospital machines. She holes away in her childhood New York City apartment, wallowing by her lonesome. Here,...

Wang Bing’s Youth (Hard Times) picks up where its predecessor left off, deepening our understanding of lives dictated by backbreaking labor. Filmed over five years in garment factories throughout Zhili, China, this installment carries forward the documentary trilogy’s immersion in the rhythms of industrial toil. Through subtle shifts in focus, Hard Times subtly underscores both the passage of time and growing frustrations among its subjects – young migrant workers fighting for dignity amid dismal circumstances.
As with Spring, the film transports viewers into its world through lengthy, observant shots soaked in the din of sewing machines. This allows us to truly feel the numbing routine engulfing these factory workers, who labor as fast as minds and bodies allow. Yet Hard Times departs from its predecessor in documenting bolder organizing efforts against miserly bosses. It follows mounting disputes over paltry piecework pay and debates splitting the crowd.

A strange mix of genres, time travel, estranged family members reuniting, and heist gone wrong thriller, Things Will Be Different is the first feature from writer/director Michael Felker. Wang Bing’s Youth trilogy of documentaries about Chinese garment workers could have just as easily been named Three Colors. Like the titles that comprise Krzysztof Kieślowski’s triptych, each of Wang’s films is informed by a different color, though it’s primarily used to tint the title cards and chyrons that indicate a given sequence’s setting and subjects. The first installment, last year’s Youth (Spring), appropriately uses a lush green, while the subsequent Youth (Hard Times) went with a punishing deep red. The concluding entry, Youth (Homecoming), opts for something that works in more ambiguous ways, using a light blue that, depending on the viewer, could signal calm, harmony, or even sadness.
Youth (Homecoming) operates as something of an expansion of the concluding sequences of its two forebears. Youth (Spring) and Youth (Hard Times), which both run a full hour longer than the fleet (by Wang...

Hulu’s finally released the full trailer for Rivals, the eight-episode series based on Dame Jilly Cooper’s novel. David Tennant (Good Omens) and Alex Hassell (The Tragedy of Macbeth) star in the adaptation, premiering on October 18, 2024.
“Set against the backdrop of power-grabbing social elites, Rivals dives headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986, where hair-dos are big and ambitions are even bigger,” reads Hulu’s synopsis. “Deals are brokered in boardrooms, as well as bedrooms. Nobody can be sure who will come out on top. With every man and woman out only for themselves, can true love really blossom?”

Hassell plays dashing ex-Olympian, Member of Parliament, and dangerously charismatic Rupert Campbell-Black. David Tennant stars as Lord Tony Baddingham. This weekend at the Camden International Film Festival, the Archival Producers Alliance (APA) released the first-ever industry-wide guidelines for generative artificial intelligence use in documentary film. GenAI is a thorny topic throughout the film and TV world, but it poses specific and unique challenges to nonfiction, where primary sources, historical documentation, and archival imagery are fundamental building blocks.
The guidelines address this threat directly in its introduction: “The APA believes that the survival of the documentary industry — in all of its power and promise to help us understand and interpret our history and our present — is contingent on maintaining a truthful and transparent relationship with viewers.”
For this reason, the guidelines are focused explicitly on using GenAI to create new footage or alter existing primary source materials. The APA distinguishes between GenAI and other Machine Learning, or AI that is being incorporated into production workflows for ideation, transcription, and logging footage.

Wang Bing’s Youth (Spring), the first in the filmmaker’s trilogy of documentaries about garment workers in Zhejiang province in eastern China, eschewed incident to stress the numbing quality of the manual labor and economic stagnation of its young migrant workers. The second installment in the trilogy, Youth (Hard Times), similarly leans into durational extremes but eventually and sneakily reveals a broadened scope.
Wang again keys us to the perspective of the workers, subjecting us to the constant roar of sewing machines until the din of routine is understood as that and becomes barely noticeable. The oscillation between scenes of toil and moments of rest in which laborers are too tired to do much of anything other than scroll on their phones conveys just how easy it is to become numb in such an environment. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been busy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, directing episodes of Moon Knight, Loki season 2, and the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again, but before they entered the Marvel universe, they were known for making genre films like Resolution, Spring, The Endless, Synchronic, and Something in the Dirt. Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, sees a pair of siblings on the lam get caught up in a twisty sci-fi puzzle box thriller. Today brings the first trailer and a poster the highlights the genre-bending mysteries ahead.
Magnet Releasing has set a theatrical day-and-date release for Things Will Be Different on October 4, 2024.
The film follows “estranged siblings who, after a robbery, escape to a rural safe house hidden in time and discover they’re not the only occupants.”
“I made Things Will Be Different for people who love thrillers, noir, and science fiction they can think about. It’s a giant mystery box of a movie with a strong familial core that’s inspired by my own family. Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy are just incredible as Joe and Sid, and I can’t believe they aren’t actually brother and sister.

The latest documentary from Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing is titled Youth (Hard Times). For anyone who watched its predecessor, Youth (Spring), in the early days of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, or anywhere else, this news may be cause for concern. Filmed in typically anthropological detail by the master director and his team between the years 2014 and 2019, Spring documented the lives and labors of a group of textile workers in a bustling corner of Zhili––a world of endless hours, meager pay, ruthless bosses, and worrying conditions. It looked like the kind of place where not much light gets in, regardless of the suffocating air pollution. If these were not “hard times,” you had to wonder, what are?

The middle part of a trilogy consisting of 2023’s “Youth (Spring)” and the imminent “Youth (Homecoming),” “Youth (Hard Times)” crystallizes the strengths of Wang Bing’s latest epic-length documentary project. “Hard Times” offers no radical change from the (quite deliberately) repetitive construction of “Spring,” but does feature subtle shifts in focus and certainly a lot more in the way of incident and splintering effects. That’s not to say that there’s now a lack of sequences devoted to people humming along to music playing on their phones while they work — the year’s most surprising needle drop may be that an austere arthouse documentary features an electronic track that seemingly samples The Offspring’s “Original Prankster.”
A primer, first, for anyone who’s not already familiar with the project. Slowness and making viewers aware of deceptively aimless pacing are perhaps the definitive characteristics of Wang’s output. He embeds...

Despite how much it is a part of our everyday lives, it’s rare to see pregnancy portrayed on film, and it’s even rarer to see it portrayed in such an intimate, nuanced and playful way as it is in filmmaker Kat Mills Martin’s Celeste in Spring, a short film which explores burgeoning motherhood from the perspective of a single mother exploring her sexuality. Using restrained cinematography and a warm colour palette, Martin is able to deconstruct notions of the single mother in a manner which is both uplifting and intelligent. It’s truly a really joyful film and we’re delighted to be premiering it online today alongside a chat with Martin where she talks through the carefully constructed shooting schedule of a pregnant actress, the non-judgemental lens she wanted to cast upon her protagonist, and the creative influence she drew from Chantal Akerman’s iconic feature Jeanne Dielman.

Actually, this new one is only streaming, though it’s certainly worthy of a theatrical run, After all, it stars an Oscar-winning actress and its director has made two films that “took home the gold”. Plus it’s based on a popular novel, though in many ways it’s a modern media gloss on a fairy tale. Mind you, the “princess” is unlike any we’ve met as this is more of a May/December pairing (minus the tons of angst of that flick from last year). Like that classic Nat King Cole tune, each of these unlikely lovers is smitten with The Idea Of You.
We first meet one of the “yous” in the film’s opening scene.

Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

From a certain perspective, monster movies might not seem to be as relevant during monstrous times. But in an age when our fears seem larger than life and the world constantly seems as though it’s on the brink of collapse, the best examples of the genre can almost assume a documentary-like authenticity, reflecting our reality as vividly as vérité ever could.
“The Babadook” might be about a demon that pops out of a children’s book, but no recent film does a better job of capturing the acute reality of living with grief. “Cloverfield” follows a gaggle of pre-Instagram model millennials as they’re chased around Manhattan by a bug-eyed colossus, but few of the somber post-9/11 dramas do a better job of distilling the heartsick chaos of watching your hometown try to make sense of a senseless attack. “The Village” is...

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

“Love and death are the two great hinges on which all human sympathies turn.”
-B.R. Haydon
Love and death are the two most powerful forces in human experience. They are the engines of our stories because they are the engines of our existence. Our hopes, desires, heartbreaks, and fears so often hang on these two factors—ever-present and constantly in tension. Horror, more often than not, preoccupies itself with the latter but from time to time, a really great horror love story comes along. Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s Spring is not only a great love story but an acknowledgment of the eternal balance of love and death that connects us to each other, the ancient and ongoing human story, and perhaps even the infinite.

There was much to be thankful for in 2023. Besides new works by several legendary directors, there were personal opportunities that allowed me to spread a larger net and take stock of the cinema landscape from a more privileged vantage point. I got to attend the Cannes and Toronto film festivals for the first time and also became a voter for some key year-end awards. The experience of thus watching films, before most of my cinephile brethren, allowed me to contemplate how much campaigns and narratives can alter a film’s reception and trajectory.
What has come into sharper relief, and what is evident from the list below too, is that Cannes has the lock on much of the best product of the year––at least anything not...

"Parliament of Rooks is my homage to stories I grew up loving by fellow Brits like Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights,” says Abigail Jill Harding. "This is the first series I've written and drawn myself. It's very ambitious and I'm excited for people to read it.
