Perhaps it is because I had just watched the entire Insidious series prior to this...that I can't help but compare the two.
Sure, this film is more of a pure ghost story, void of the whole astral projection/traveling to the otherworld aspect.
But in a more utilitarian sense...it's really quite similar (right down to the whistle!).
Here, we have a pair of siblings, returning to their childhood home, to visit their aging mother, after the untimely death of her closest friend (who, more or less, had been taking care of her).
Only to discover that she acts like her husband (their father) is still there...despite the fact that he is dead.
This makes them think that she is going senile.
However, nothing could be further from the truth.
And the longer they stay at the house...the more they start to realize that this is the case.
As they begin to witness a series of inexplicable, and preternatural, events.
That make them question everything they thought they knew.
And forces them to confront the traumas they had endured- and repressed- as children.
Hence the title, which translates to "Don't Look Back".
As far as Tubi Originals go...this film is exceptional.
However, I found myself going into it with high expectations after having watched Hidalgo's masterpiece The House At The End Of Time.
So it didn't really exceed my expectations.
It's a solid enough ghost-based horror film to keep you entertained.
But it's not on the same level as THATEOT.
So just go into it knowing that, and you should be good.
4 out of 10.
