This year has seen a handful of horror movies set within the wild and wacky world of Hollywood, from Ti West’s MaXXXine to Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance.
Up next, Akela Cooper has been attached to write and produce an adaptation of horror comic The Lot. The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
From publisher Bad Idea, the comic book “centers on a woman named Aviva Copeland, who has just landed the biggest job of her career, becoming one of the few Black women to run a Hollywood studio. But as she sets out to revitalize the aging studio, her plan to refurbish and reopen a shuttered soundstage uncovers a buried secret: a legendary filmmaker, obsessed with authenticity, hired actual cult members to perform a real-life occult ritual for his latest horror masterpiece.

2024 has given us many impressive independent projects with distinct voices. Be it “Didi,” “Thelma,” or “A Real Pain,” they have proven to be more captivating than the buzzier titles. India Donaldson’s “Good One” is another glowing addition to this list that revolves around three characters: 17-year-old Sam (Lily Collias), her middle-aged father Chris (James Le Gros), and his close friend Matt (Danny McCarthy), who decide to go on a hike together. At the last moment, Matt’s son bails out on this plan, leaving Sam alone with the two men.
As they start traveling, we learn bits about their lives – their worldviews, behaviors, and preferences. Chris and Matt are products of an era where men were often conditioned to be unfeeling, insensitive, and stamina-flaunting. So, you are either a winner or a loser. There’s no in-between. In case you’re a mediocre man or not as strong in judgemental eyes,...

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)
Of this year’s top 10 contenders for Best Original Screenplay, nine were written, at least in part, by the directors. The exception is “Challengers,” which Justin Kuritzkes wrote for director Luca Guadagnino. He also adapted the William S. Burroughs novel “Queer” for this busy helmer and he could well contend over in Best Adapted Screenplay for that.
“Challengers” is, at its heart, a romance. Love, albeit short-lived, is also the subject of the frontrunner in this race, Sean Baker‘s “Anora.

Industry representatives at the Zurich Film Festival are optimistic that moviegoers are returning to cinemas and signs are aplenty that business is improving as the international theatrical sector recovers from the impact of the pandemic and two Hollywood strikes.
Discussing the disruption and current state of the sector at the Zurich Summit industry forum were Rebecca Kearey, head of international and business operations at Searchlight Pictures; Neon CEO Tom Quinn; Stefanie Fahrion, head of distribution and sales at Film4; and MK2 Chairman Nathanaël Karmitz.
Business may not be back to normal, but it is picking up and there are positive signs, according to Kearey.
“The pressures are enormous and have been enormous and continue to be fairly large. I think though, like everything, resilience and creativity come through, trumping some of that.”
The cinema lovers are still out there and still coming to theaters, she said. “It may be taking...

The pandemic and Hollywood strikes battered box office for independent cinema is turning a corner, distribution execs told a panel at the Zurich Summit industry conflab on Saturday.
“We’ve been in a trench trying to get out,” said Rebecca Kearey, Head of International at Searchlight Pictures, which enjoyed box office success with Poor Things late last year and into 2024.
“Last fall was the beginning of our business coming back with some of those phenomenal award season movies that really delivered for audiences. I feel we’re coming out of this trench, internationally and domestically, in the U.S.”
Kearey was joined on stage by Neon CEO Tom Quinn, Film4 Head of Distribution & Sales Stefanie Fahrion and Nathanaël Karmitz, chairman of French independent film powerhouse MK2.
Agreeing with Kearey, Quinn pointed to the fact that the average gross per film had hit $15M at the U.S. box office in...

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” Stone is back in the race this year with “Kinds of Kindness,” which reunites her with “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos. However that trippy trilogy is unlikely to bring them back to the Oscars. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Actress.)

The first trailer for “American Horror Stories” Season 4 is here, and it’s teasing all sorts of creepy crawlies. The five-night Huluween event begins on Oct. 15 and will only air on Hulu.
This first look teases the episode titles for the new season, including “Backrooms,” “The Thing Under the Bed,” “Clone,” “Leprechaun” and “X.”
“When she dreams things happen,” Jeff Hiller ominously says in the video. “What kind of things?” Debby Ryan nervously asks.
The camera then shows a clawed hand snaking out from under the bed while she and her boyfriend are kissing. True to the laws of every good horror movie, he’s sucked underneath the bed the second he goes to look. Watch the full trailer below.

When producer David Beaubaire was an executive at Warner Bros., DreamWorks, Paramount, and Sony, he made movies like “Up in the Air,” “Dreamgirls,” “Flight,” and “The Big Short” — the kinds of original studio projects that aren’t often made today.
Development has always been a gamble, requiring many years and millions of dollars for a film that’s more likely to flop than to hit — if it ever gets made at all. It’s also become increasingly rare. Beaubaire studied 505 films released and/or to be released by major studios between 2022 and 2026 and found that the titles championed by a studio executive — someone who courted filmmakers and talent, went through rewrites, and saw it through to its release — accounted for 10 percent of the total.

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.

Previously known for roles in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Scream 5” and TV’s “Better Things,” 25-year-old Mikey Madison achieved a breakthrough earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival as the title character in “Anora,” which ended up winning the Palme d’Or. Now, as the fall film festival season has heated up, she has taken the lead in our overall odds for Best Actress at the Oscars according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But a closer look at our predictions shows that this race is still wide open.

At this time last year, picketers were walking outside of studio gates, still two months away from resolving Hollywood’s dual strikes. Of the big festivals, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), with its focus on star-heavy independent projects, was hardest hit by the labor action, with empty red carpets turning much-hyped premieres into damp squibs. Heading into TIFF this year, Hollywood is contending with less uncertainty (M&a and cost-cutting aside) and release calendars have fewer holes as strike-halted productions have started to roll out again, all of which should be good news for dealmakers headed to TIFF.

Over the past few months, a twisted killer, a nonagenarian avenger and a talk show host with a deadly interest in the occult have reinvigorated an indie film business that had been in a prolonged slump. The success of movies like “Longlegs,” “Thelma” and “Late Night With the Devil” have helped a sector of the entertainment industry — crushed by Covid, strikes and streaming — mount a box office comeback. And while it’s a long way from the arthouse heyday of the 1990s and early aughts, the turnaround is impressive.
“We’ve had some of our biggest hits to date,” says Elissa Federoff, distribution chief at Neon, the studio behind the horror thriller “Long- legs.” “And that’s because we’ve taken bigger bets on bigger-budgeted films that have the potential to reach a much wider audience.”

Neon has nabbed U.S. rights to Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk’s “Hell of a Summer,” a horror comedy that premiered at Toronto Film Festival in 2023.
Wolfhard, the star of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” and Bryk, who appeared in the indie drama “When You Finish Saving the World,” directed the film in their feature debut. They also star in the movie alongside Fred Hechinger. A specific date has yet to be announced, but Neon has slated the movie for theatrical release in 2025.
“Hell of a Summer” follows counselors who are getting Camp Pineway ready the night before campers arrive when a masked killer begins slaughtering the staff. Wolfhard and Bryk have said they wrote the film with a goal of upending Gen Z stereotypes.
“Our No. 1 conversation was how annoying it is to see new teen movies and how badly our age group is represented,” Wolfhard told Variety last year at TIFF.

Exclusive: A strong cast of actors, financiers and producers has come together for Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, the follow-up to his critical and commercial hit The Worst Person in the World, which was Oscar nominated and took more than $12 million at the global box office.
That film’s breakout star Renate Reinsve is back to play the lead in Sentimental Value, as previously reported, and we can reveal that she will be joined by Stellan Skarsgård (Dune), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (A Beautiful Life) and Elle Fanning (The Great).
Production has begun in Oslo on Trier’s anticipated sixth feature. It will film in Norway’s capital through November, with additional shoots in France, before launching in 2025. Refreshingly, the comedy-drama keeps Trier in his native Norwegian language.
The film will be fully expected by many to launch in Cannes competition in 2025. The Worst Person in the World had its world premiere in 2021 at Cannes,...

The retribution visited upon exploiters of seniors by June Squibb in current sleeper hit “Thelma” has but Nerf-ball impact compared to the brass-knuckles style of vengeance practiced by Dale Dickey in “The G.” This considerably less cozy tale has the star as a vinegary veteran of hard living who turns out to be very much the wrong person for organized criminals to safely prey upon.
Canadian writer-director Karl R. Hearne’s second feature recalls much 1970s cinema in its emphasis on gritty character detail over suspense mechanics, resulting in an ostensible thriller that’s not very thrilling. Still, its storytelling has the same grim satisfaction that drives its heroine, a woman who’s not particularly ingratiating but is quite capable of doling out punishment to deserving parties.

Vindication for critics who thought Kevin Costner’s epic “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1″ (Warner Bros.) felt more like a TV drama: It was an immediate #1 on VOD top 10 lists.
The first of a planned four-film series, with the second already completed (and now delayed after the postponement of its August release), it showed poorly in theaters with $28.5 million in U.S./Canada after its fourth weekend. Its rapid transition to home viewing after 18 days (standard for Universal beyond its biggest hits) looks like a smart move: It suggests there is an audience, although perhaps not one eager to watch the 181-minute epic in a theater.
This could help the troubled project gain traction, get it out of the red, and increase interest for “Chapter 2,” wherever/whenever it plays.

Josh Margolin’s Thelma is a heartfelt drama-comedy that offers a fun and nuanced exploration of aging. Elevated by an exceptional performance from legendary Hollywood actor June Squibb, the film also features a terrific performance from the late Richard Roundtree – star of the American blaxploitation crime action thriller Shaft – in his last ever role.
The story centres on Thelma (Squibb), a 93 year-old widow living a quiet, solitary life in LA. Her days are filled with frequent visits from her aimless, yet adoring grandson, Danny (Fred Hechinger). When a phone scammer posing as Danny tricks her out of $10,000, Thelma is determined to retrieve her money. Despite her family’s concerns, she enlists the help of Ben (Roundtree), a widower from a neighbouring assisted living community, and together they set out on an adventure.
Writer-director Josh Margolin draws inspiration from his own grandmother’s near-experience with a scam, infusing the film with heartfelt affection.

Warner Bros’ Twisters is the leading title at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, opening in 675 cinemas 28 years after the original film was a hit in the territory.

As his new film Thelma hits UK cinemas, the actor who is known for A Clockwork Orange, starring in South Park and killing Captain Kirk is taking your questions
In Thelma, out now, Malcolm McDowell does not play one of the dazzling antiheroes which either made his name – in If…., O Lucky Man! and A Clockwork Orange – or helped propel his turn-of-the-century career revival, with Gangster No 1 and 2003’s I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead.
Instead, he plays the pitiful owner of a suburban bric-a-brac shop who, to keep the lights on, has a side hustle in swindling vulnerable pensioners out of large sums by pretending to be a lawyer who needs paying now for errant grandchildren’s counsel.

[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in 2017. It has since been updated many times.]
With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced a slew of spectacular, silly, snarky, and cynical comedies: ready to fire up whenever you need a serotonin burst or distraction thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services.
The pandemic may be in the rearview for the U.S. federal government, but the specter of war, a tortured economy, and human rights issues across the globe have occupied the minds of many instead. So, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017, yet another rethink. Since the list was originally published, we’ve expanded it to 90 entries, including titles released since then that deserved including and other titles we somehow overlooked the first time.

The Marvel star was recently embroiled in a controversy where one of OpenAI’s models used a voice eerily similar to hers. The actress reflected on the whole scenario and how shocked she was when she found out that Sam Altman had been allegedly manipulating her voice in an era where AI has become a big threat to creativity.

The movie year 2024 got a jolt of life this past month with the arrivals of rousing franchise fare from “Inside Out 2” to “A Quiet Place: Day One.” But there’s also much to celebrate on the front of original releases, from the Neon-record-breaking “Longlegs” over the July 12 weekend to, earlier in the year, more originals like “Civil War” banking for A24. Magnolia Pictures’ “Thelma,” meanwhile, also defied the odds to become a rare box office breakout from Sundance.
And while none of these movies are on our list of the best films of 2024 so far — which we’ve pooled below from our highest-praising reviews from the past six months — but they all point toward a movie-going culture that’s healthier than some pictures paint.
The below list of 20 films will absolutely evolve as the year moves forward, and as the 2024 fall festivals are around the bend, bringing a fresh crop of brand-new movies.
