Just in time for a Halloween binge, Hysteria! is now available on Peacock and, having seen most of the series already, I can definitely say that it's worth your time. An 80s-set horror story that doesn't feel like it's focused on nostalgia, Hysteria! has a great cast with great chemistry, and it really does a great job of building up its characters, including its supporting cast, which features Bruce Campbell as the chief of police in a town where satanic panic takes hold. During a recent press day, I caught up with Bruce Campbell, where we talked about his new role and his experience with satanic panic in the 1980s.

The devil is in the details, or in the case of Hysteria!, in a local heavy metal band.
Hysteria! is one of two original series Peacock has lined up to scare the bejesus out of viewers this Halloween.
The other is Teacup, based on Robert McCammon’s 1988 science fiction horror novel Stinger, set to premiere on October 10.
(Photo: NBCU)
Horror icon Bruce Campbell guest stars in Hysteria! as the town’s police chief, so you know it’s going to be good.
Here’s everything else we know so far about Hysteria!
What is Hysteria About?
Set in the fictional town of Happy Hallow, Michigan, in the 1980s, Hysteria! explores the “satanic panic” of that era.
The story follows a group of high school kids who decide to put the pedal to the metal, literally, by rebranding their heavy metal band as a Satanic metal band.
Why would they do such a devilish thing?...

Exclusive: Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent) and Jared Harris (Chernobyl) are in final negotiations to join Netflix’s new film from Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow, according to multiple sources.
No word on the roles they’ll be playing, but they join an ensemble that will be led by Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, as previously reported. The film’s title and plot remain under wraps, though sources have told Deadline that it will be set at the White House as a national crisis unfolds.
The project marks Bigelow’s first feature since the 2017 thriller Detroit, an awards contender produced and distributed by Annapurna Pictures, which starred John Boyega, Will Poulter, Kaitlyn Dever and more. News of the film was first divulged by Netflix recently during its Upfront presentation in New York, which also saw them spotlight upcoming films including Happy Gilmore 2 and the thriller The Woman in Cabin 10 starring Keira Knightley.

I am in a fix here with the Ross brothers’ 2023 film, Gasoline Rainbow. Usually, I admire the kind of cinema where nothing really happens; the likes of Richard Linklater’s Slacker (1991) and Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) are what I’m talking about. These movies rely solely on the vibe and the conversations between characters; most of the time, I dig those. Gasoline Rainbow is a coming-of-age road-trip movie, which should remind you of movies like Andrea Arnold’s masterful American Honey (2016), a film I absolutely loved, and Harmony Korine’s super-trippy Spring Breakers (2012), which worked for me despite its erratic nature.
The reason I’m bringing up all these is because, while I thought there was a lot to love in Gasoline Rainbow, the whole thing fell quite short of my expectations. And while I convinced myself that I probably would have loved it if I saw it...

The King of Horror’s works have become one of the greatest sources of the filmmakers’ inspiration, as numerous movies and TV titles, based on Stephen King’s novels, brought billions of dollars to the industry. Some of them have even gained worldwide popularity and the golden status and are being discussed and rewatched by fans annually.
These include the 1986 movie with a seemingly straightforward premise. It focuses on four young boys, Gordie, Vern, Chris and Teddy, hoping to become famous in their hometown by finding a dead body of a stranger accidentally killed in the Oregon woods.
Their journey towards the body, however, offers a bunch of unexpected turns, including the unpleasant encounters and the hostility of the wilderness. As they go further in the forest, they also learn more about one another and their very different home lives.
Thus, this film presents a metaphor of coming of age,...

The idea of youth escaping into a large section of woods so as to start life anew is a plot device not at all unexplored prior, seen in films as recently as 2013’s “The Kings of Summer,” while literature will always have “My Side of the Mountain. “In “Penelope, “the concept gets the episodic treatment, but if the premiere is any indicator, this is one project with the potential to captivate in its own unique way.

The Night Agent is a series created by Shawn Ryan starring Gabriel Basso. It is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk.
A call, an FBI agent and a conspiracy: the elements of the thriller are defined in just ten minutes.

A call, an FBI agent and a conspiracy: the elements of the thriller are defined in just ten minutes.
About the Series
And the fact is that The Night Agent is a series that is not in the least misleading: a protagonist dedicated to good and an action script structure that jumps from one scene to another in a series that knows which strings to pluck and simply acts accordingly.

Filmmaker Jonathan Krisel has been roped into direct ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’ sequel. Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of ‘Portlandia’, is in negotiations with Legendary Entertainment to direct the sequel to the live-action ‘Pokemon’ movie from 2019. Chris Galletta will write the script, reports Variety.
Krisel co-created, wrote and executive produced IFC’s sketch comedy show ‘Portlandia’, which starred fellow co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein in a multitude of oddball situations around Portland, Oregon.
He also co-created, wrote and directed FX’s ‘Baskets’, starring Zach Galifianakis as a rodeo clown. Previously, Galletta wrote the 2013 coming-of-age comedy ‘The Kings of Summer’.
The original ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’ starred Ryan Reynolds as a talking, coffee-loving Pikachu who fancied himself as a Sherlock Holmes. The electric mouse teams up with Tim Goodman, a down-on-his-luck Pokemon trainer played by Justice Smith, to find Tim’s missing dad. The cast included Kathryn Newton, who’s currently starring in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania...

Jonathan Krisel, I choose you! A sequel to 2019’s live-action film “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” is in the works at Legendary Entertainment, and the studio is in talks with the “Portlandia” co-creator Krisel to direct, IndieWire has confirmed.
Chris Galletta (“The Kings of Summer”) wrote the script based on the original film directed by Rob Letterman. However, a source tells IndieWire that no other talent deals have closed yet, including for Ryan Reynolds, who voiced the beloved yellow, electric mouse Pokemon in the original film. “Detective Pikachu” also starred Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy, Ken Watanabe, Suki Waterhouse, and Rita Ora. Though Deadline, which first reported the news, says Reynolds is still expected to play a part in the sequel.
Though the original film, which was released by Warner Bros., grossed $449 million worldwide, development on a sequel had stalled, with the film’s star Smith at one point even suspecting a follow-up would never happen.

Nearly four years removed from the original, a "Detective Pikachu" sequel is finally moving forward at Warner Bros. Though it does seem like we're going to get a mostly new team behind the camera. As for in front of the camera? More on that in a moment. For now, what we know is that Jonathan Krisel, the co-creator of "Portlandia," is in negotiations to direct the sequel. This news comes courtesy of Deadline, who reveal that Chris Galletta ("The Kings of Summer") is also on board to pen the screenplay. So things seem to be moving along.
Rob Letterman ("Goosebumps") directed the first film, which finally brought the world of "Pokemon" into live-action. Rather than go with an Ash Ketchum-centric story, Warner Bros. opted to adapt the "Detective Pikachu" video game in a bit of a left-of-center move. It's also one that worked, as the film earned generally favorable reviews...

In horror news that makes you go "hmm," apparently 2008's terrifying home invasion movie "The Strangers" is getting a remake. Deadline is reporting (via Fangoria) that a new "Strangers" movie is not only going to happen but that it's already in production. And while the idea of messing with such a heart-poundingly intense original film might raise a few eyebrows, plot details about the new film honestly don't sound like a direct remake so much as a continuation of the film's universe a la 2018's "The Strangers: Prey at Night."
The new version of "The Strangers" will apparently feature "Riverdale" star Madelaine Petsch, Aka Cheryl Blossom, which is an inspired bit of casting if you ask me. Petsch will star alongside "Teen Wolf" actor Froy Gutierrez and "The Kings of Summer" actor Gabriel Basso. The film has already set a director, too: Renny Harlin, who's helmed films as varying as...

Exclusive: Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale), Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer) and Gabriel Basso (Hillbilly Elegy) have been tapped to star in a Lionsgate remake of the 2008 horror The Strangers, which has entered production in Slovakia. Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger) is directing the film, which will be the first in a trilogy, having locked in a deal to helm the subsequent pair.
The original film The Strangers was a home invasion pic, which Bryan Bertino wrote and directed in his feature debut, with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman starring. It registered as a sleeper hit upon its May 2008 release via Universal Pictures and came to be appreciated in the years following as a cult classic, with the sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night being released in March of 2018.
The new Strangers film will follow Petsch’s character as she drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest.

The drama is set in the isolation of Texas’ Big Bend, where a lone trailer on an abandoned commune has become the reluctant hideout for Geena (Moriarty), at the behest of her criminal husband, Clyde (Courtney). Geena’s lust for life and desire for interaction with the outside world are quashed by Clyde’s insistence they remain hidden from the law and his former cohorts looking to settle old scores. When originally approached by Warner Bros. to helm a new King Kong movie, Jordan Vogt-Roberts initially balked, "I don't know if I'm your guy for this." The story that the studio had in mind took place in 1917, he told /Film back in 2017. But when he came up with a concept of the movie as an "Apocalypse Now" riff — what the "Kings of Summer" director calls, "a Vietnam War movie with monsters" — he wasn't laughed out of the room. The studio ran with Vogt-Roberts' idea, and "Kong: Skull Island" was off to the races. As he pointed out in...

Warner Bros' Monsterverse seems to be doing pretty well for itself, having just greenlit two television shows for Apple, and a sequel to "Godzilla vs. Kong" after its box office success. People love seeing giant monsters do their thing. While Gareth Edwards' melancholic "Godzilla" is still my favorite of the four film franchise, I've slightly come around a bit on director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' "Kong: Skull Island." It's a flawed creature feature whose gnarly special effects are more alive than its human characters, and it doesn't exactly make its titular monster much of a compelling character, but Vogt-Roberts ("The Kings of Summer") provides enough...

Journalists call it “burying the lede.” Universal’s “Candyman” opened at #1 to $22.3 million, beating its $15 million opening-weekend expectations by nearly 50 percent. Headlines trumpeted the impressive achievement, especially in a time when the box office is still struggling to right itself in a pandemic.
However, the biggest news belongs to its history-making director, Nia DaCosta. She is the first Black female director to have a #1 film at the box office. It’s unlikely to be her last; she’s in preproduction on “The Marvels,” the first sequel to “Captain Marvel” — another couple of firsts, as a Black woman hired as a Marvel Studios director and as the highest-budgeted film directed by a Black woman.

From giant apes to giant robots: Filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”) is set to direct and produce a live-action adaptation of wildly popular anime series “Gundam” for Legendary and Netflix, the streamer announced on Monday.
Famed comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan (“Y: The Last Man”) is writing the screenplay and will executive produce. Legendary’s Cale Boyter is overseeing the project, along with Sunrise — the Japanese animation studio behind the “Gundam” franchise. Legendary will distribute the film theatrically in China.
There is no word on what the story will be for the film, but there certainly is a wealth of material to choose from. First launched in 1979 as a TV series from Yoshiyuki Tomino, “Mobile Suit Gundam” initially struggled to gain an audience, but grew in popularity through the 1980s due to a wide proliferation of adaptations across animated feature films, novels, manga, toys, models and video games.

Early in “Hillbilly Elegy,” based on the memoir by J.D. Vance, Yale law student J.D. is dining with partners at a white-shoe law firm, and when he mentions that he is from Ohio and Kentucky, he is greeted with a wave of side-eye and oh-so-polite condescension about his Appalachian origins. It’s a scene that might have more impact if “Hillbilly Elegy” itself weren’t so frequently condescending about the denizens of the Rust Belt.
The results play less like the exploration of a life or an evocation of a time and place and more like an informercial for J.D. Vance, who is more salt-of-the-earth than those snooty lawyers, but also manages not to fall into the traps of ignorance and poverty and addiction that befall so many of the people with whom he grew up. “Hillbilly Elegy” isn’t interested in the systems that create poverty and...

Exclusive: Nick Robinson is set as the male lead opposite Margaret Qualley in Maid, Netflix’s dramedy series from writer Molly Smith Metzler; John Wells Productions, Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.
Written by Metzler, Maid is inspired by Stephanie Land’s bestselling memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive. It revolves around Alex (Qualley), a single mother who turns to housekeeping to—barely—make ends meet. Told primarily through her point of view, Maid will be a beautiful, alive, gritty, and inspiring exploration of poverty in America.
The role reunites Robinson and Qualley who both starred in the Rashid Johnson-directed HBO film Native Son, which premiered last year at Sundance.

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Arango moved to South Florida with his mother and brother when he was 14, a cultural shift that directly informed his debut feature, the Sundance-bound “Blast Beat.” (The film is inspired by his 2015 short of the same name.) With that project, which features Colombian-American brothers (and former Disney Channel stars) Mateo and Moisés Arias as siblings, Arango wanted to correct a problem he found in Hollywood-produced Latino narratives.
“There were stereotypes in those stories that I didn’t associate myself with: the violence, the drug trafficking,” Arango says. “You would see movies that reference Colombia, and it would look like the jungle. It’s far from the truth. I wanted to tell stories that felt cinematic, sophisticated and fun, where it’s not about underprivileged characters from Latin America, but the opposite: [people] with complex personalities and cool taste.”

AMC’s new Walking Dead series is starting to take shape, and we are starting to learn a little more about it. The series is said to focus on “the first generation to come of age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever.”
It was also announced that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts will helm the third series in the franchise, which was co-created by Scott Gimple and The Walking Dead veteran writer and producer Matt Negrete. Negrete will serve as the series’ showrunner.
I like the work that Vogt-Roberts has done. His little indie film The Kings of Summer was fantastic, and he also directed episodes of You’re the Worst. The filmmaker has also been developing a feature film version of Metal Gear Solid for years that hopefully gets made one day.

FX has ordered the limited series “A Teacher,” based on the Hannah Fidell film of the same name.
The series explores the story behind the mugshot of a female high school teacher, Claire (Mara), caught in an affair with her male student, Eric (Robinson), revealing the complexities and consequences of these illegal relationships. FX has ordered 10 episodes.
“Working with FX – truly the home of all my favorite shows – on ‘A Teacher’ is a dream come true,” said Fidell. “I couldn’t ask for a more perfect partner who, from day one, has understood and embraced the inherenent complexities and nuance required for such subject matter.”
The film version of “A Teacher” — which Fidell wrote, produced, directed — was released in 2013, making its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Fidell will also write and direct the series in addition to serving as an executive producer alongside Mara, Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman of Aggregate Films,...
