Michael Mann has been making headlines for a while over his decision to work on the sequel for his classic 1995 crime drama, Heat. While the original film starred legends like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer, Mann’s sequel is said to be eyeing Adam Driver and Austin Butler for titular roles.

By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

I was late catching up to Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” and though the film has gotten some good reviews, like Peter Debruge’s rave in Variety, it’s fair to say that the collective response to it has been mixed to muted. “The Bikeriders” hasn’t exactly set off a chain reaction of retro biker fever. It seems as if more than a few people don’t quite know what to make of it: a drama based on Danny Lyon’s 1968 black-and-white photography book, which captured the rough-riding lives of a Chicago motorcycle gang called the Outlaws, their exploits now presented, in Nichols’ film, in all their unvarnished bad-boy grit and glory. Personally, I loved the film, and came out of it with a sense of surprise — mostly at the fact it hasn’t been more robustly celebrated. But I think I understand why.

Our top pick for an awards contender to stream this week, crime drama “The Bikeriders,” has some names attached to it that have been in the conversation in awards seasons past. It stars Emmy and Tony winner Jodie Comer and Academy Award nominees Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Michael Shannon. Moreover, it’s written and directed by Jeff Nichols, whose previous film, 2016’s “Loving,” earned Ruth Negga an Academy Award nomination. While “The Bikeriders” looks more likely than not to miss out on major awards this year, don’t count Comer out yet in lead actress races. She is excellent in the film.
“The Bikeriders” is set in the midwest in the tumultuous years of the mid-to-late 1960s, and follows the rise and fall of Johnny Davis (Hardy), the founder of an outlaw motorcycle club, as seen through the eyes of his protegé’s wife, Kathy Cross (Comer). The club...

Darren Aronofsky's next movie, Caught Stealing, has nabbed itself another A-List powerhouse actor to lead its increasingly starry line-up. Following the news earlier this week that Zoë Kravitz is in talks to join Austin Butler in The Whale filmmaker's latest, today Deadline have reported that Academy Award winner Regina King has signed on to help bring Aronofsky's buzzy crime thriller to life.
Based on Charlie Huston's books of the same name, the mother! director's film — adapted for screen by Huston himself — will see Butler star as Hank Thompson, a burnt out former baseball player. Things get hairy for Hank when he finds himself unwittingly embroiled in the Big Apple's criminal underground and left fighting for survival on the downtown streets of 90s NYC. Further details on the direction Aronofsky's movie will take remain under wraps for now, as does info on how King and Kravitz will factor into things,...

The Animal Kingdom (Thomas Cailley)
In The Animal Kingdom, an Un Certain Regard-selected science-fiction romp from France, human-animal mutations are the new norm. Director Thomas Cailley begins things in media res with a familiar disaster-movie scene: François (Romain Duris) and Émile (Paul Kircher)––father and son, respectively––are stuck in traffic, making chit-chat, when something slowly begins capturing the attention of other drivers. An ambulance across the way begins to rumble. Then a man with a large winged arm bursts out, causing some damage before scurrying down a tunnel. Only mildly ruffled, François exchanges a jaded aphorism with another driver over: “Strange times.” – Rory O. (full review)

“Thelma” (Magnolia), an unlikely action-comedy starring June Squibb as a nonagenarian grandmother who becomes a phone scam victim, has grossed about $7.3 million through its third week. Though not a blockbuster by summer standards, in the specialized world, and particularly outside awards season, “Thelma” is a blockbuster, headed for between $9-10 million domestic, theatrically. And at a time of challenge for this sector. How it got there suggests some lessons for distributors.
Something clicked here. “Thelma” debuted last January at Sundance with immediate acquisition interest, selling to Magnolia, which isn’t normally known for mid-wide-level releases.
By all indications, the plan has worked. “Thelma” is already Magnolia’s highest-grossing narrative feature in the company’s 23-year history. Adjusted, “Woman Thou Art Loosed” and “The World’s Fastest Indian” ended up slightly bigger, but both were around 20 years ago.

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 88 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2024 winner, Robert Downey, Jr., was 58 when he picked up his prize for “Oppenheimer.” He joined 16 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. Why do we bestow upon Hollywood’s finest the name of ‘stars’? Consider this for a moment; it is not mere hyperbole: these big screen icons exude an aura that can carry charismatic waves across an entire room, drawing us into their gravitational pull. And thus, it won’t be wrong to say that Austin Butler, the Golden Globe-touting charmer, incarnates this star-quality phenomenon.
For instance, last month, he mesmerized and gave Sarah Harris, host of The Project, a rosy-cheeked tizzy. He worked his magic with the finesse of a maestro, making laser-focused eye contact and using a voice that seemed to channel Elvis Presley himself—all without revealing too much about his game.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Charlie Huston, who also wrote the script. The story, per the logline, follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, who’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of 1990s New York City.

Together, they’ve worked on the director’s π, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, Mother! and The Whale; as well as Tobias Lindholm’s The Good Nurse, Pablo Larraín’s Jackie, Lance Oppenheim’s Some Kind of Heaven, Josef Kubota Wladyka’s Catch the Fair One and Alex Pritz’s documentary The Territory.

Jodie Comer looked jaw-dropping as she stuck to classic black for a photo shoot now sitting at over 140,000 likes on her Instagram. The 31-year-old actress, whose Killing Eve fame is now topped by her starring in the 2023 movie The Bikeriders, went slinky in a shirtless blazer dress last year, rocking the sheer trend and shouting out a well-known brand. Upping her designer game in Gucci, Jodie name-dropped the Italian label in her caption, even going as far as saying this was the Gucci "look of my dreams." Jodie's fame has been attracting an increasing array of high-end brands — back in February 2023, it was Burberry getting a mention as the blonde was invited to its Fashion Show.

When treading on the heels of a specific group or a community with an intense, ingrained lifestyle, photojournalism is the most unpredictable, unvarnished medium. There’s no telling how the said group will corroborate or contradict the preconceived and often stereotypical lore around them. Just like there’s no predicting the outcome and the personal implications of a band of people giving almost the entirety of themselves over to something volatile and flighty. This vulnerable rawness of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club was first captured by Danny Lyon in his photo-book that documented their greaser lifestyle between 1965 and 1973. Nicknamed the Vandals in Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders, the flock of self-deceiving rule-followers seeking freedom from the American dream bare their most melancholic softness to us practically inadvertently.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Disney blockbuster “Inside Out 2” led the U.K. and Ireland box office for the fourth consecutive weekend with £5.1 million ($6.5 million). Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, The Bikeriders is a gritty drama that delves into the golden age of motorcycle clubs in the 1960s. The film, starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, and Norman Reedus, takes inspiration from Danny Lyon’s 1967 photo book about the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Bikeriders features Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Michael Shannon, and Jodie Comer as members of a Midwestern motorcycle club. The story revolves around the charismatic club leader Johnny (Hardy) and the youthful Benny (Butler), with Kathy (Comer) offering an outsider’s perspective on their world through her narration. After movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa made their home debuts mere weeks after their theatrical premieres, Jeff Nichols’ period drama The Bikeriders joins the pack as it revs up to hit digital outlets tomorrow. The film garnered much praise from critics, including our own Chris Bumbray, who said in his review, “This is the rare film where I almost hope there’s a more extended version, as I found some of the side characters fascinating and worth further development. […] It’s rare I look at my watch during a movie hoping there’s more or it left, but that’s what happened to me here quite a bit, so take that as high praise.”
The press release from Universal reads,
“Loyalty, power, and brotherhood collide in Focus Features’ ‘must-see summer movie’ (USA Today) that critics are calling ‘Goodfellas on Harley-Davidsons’ (Indiewire). The Bikeriders is available for the first...

You know what's better than one bikerider? Multiple bikeriders. And what could possibly be better than multiple bikeriders? Well, how about a motley gang of motorcyclists that features Austin Butler in all his smoldering glory, Tom Hardy adding yet another impenetrable voice to his vast cinematic collection, and even Jodie Comer pulling off what is by all accounts an outrageously accurate Midwestern accent? If all of that sounds like a great time, then do I have the movie for you.
Writer/director Jeff Nichols' latest feature, "The Bikeriders," finally debuted earlier this summer to positive reviews after enduring a lengthy strike-related delay that pushed it back from its initial awards-friendly date of December 1, 2023. That probably turned out for the best, however, as an encouraging amount of moviegoers trying to beat the heat helped the film modestly outperform expectations, likely on the strength of Butler's star power, the allure of dusty bike enthusiasts,...

Considering Todd Phillips’ DC sequel “Joker: Folie á Deux” is known to be jukebox musical that may or may not feature original songs as well, the casting of renowned pop singer and actress Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn should make a lot of sense, but in fact, didn’t at first to the person in charge.
As reported on by Deadline, speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, “Joker: Folie á Deux” casting director Francine Maisler shared her thoughts on Gaga’s performance and how impressed she was by her work.
“She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind. I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was Todd Phillips, before me,” said Maisler. “But I will tell you, she’s really surprising — and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised.

Would theaters even be operating if not for animated films? It’s a fair question, heavily reinforced by this weekend when “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) combined to gross $105 million.
So far in 2024, animated features have grossed a little under $1 billion, more than 25 percent of the total gross. Take that amount away, it’s hard to imagine most theaters staying afloat. That’s a big increase from 2023, when similar releases made up around 18 percent.
The sixth entry in the “Despicable Me/Minions” franchise grossed about $75 million for the three day weekend, $122.6 million total for five days to take #1 with ease. “Inside Out 2” took second with $30 million, down only 48 percent despite strong new competition. That comes to more than two thirds of the $157 million total.

As expected, Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 4 had no problem claiming the top spot over this holiday weekend. Deadline reported that the film posted a strong – but not franchise record-setting $75 million (which isn’t far from what we predicted earlier this week). With the holiday gross, the film’s five-day total is a muscular $122.6 million. That’s the second biggest opening for one of the Despicable Me movies, but it pales compared to the Minions spin-off films, which both opened well north of $100 million on their opening weekends.
Notably, despite the common consensus that two family-oriented films would bite into each other’s box office this weekend, Pixar’s box office juggernaut, Inside Out 2, continued to hold steady with $33 million, only a 42% decline from last weekend. So far, it’s made an incredible $536 million domestically. A Quiet Place: Day One performed within franchise expectations, slipping 60% to $21 million, with...

Tom Hardy is known for his transformative roles and incredible performances in films. He has performed to perfection in films such as Inception, Dunkirk, Legend, and Bronson, and has also starred in blockbusters such as Venom. He was last seen in The Bikeriders.
Despite phenomenal performances, Hardy has only received an Oscar nomination once for The Revenant as a supporting actor. The actor was reportedly convinced by co-star Leonardo DiCaprio to give the script a read after which Hardy agreed to join the film.

From vampire noir to Bin Laden, Point Break to Detroit, the first woman to win an Oscar for best director has never pulled her punches
Watching new Jeff Nichols release The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy as 60s Chicago greasers, I was reminded of two other movies: László Benedek’s 1953 Marlon Brando vehicle The Wild One, explicitly cited as an inspiration, and The Loveless, the 1981 feature debut of Kathryn Bigelow, the American film-maker (b.1951) who would go on to become the first woman to win a best director Oscar with her 2008 war drama The Hurt Locker.
A symphony of leather-clad posing (with just a touch of Kenneth Anger), The Loveless was a staple of the late-night circuit in the 80s, often on a double bill with David Lynch’s Eraserhead. Sharing directing credits with Monty Montgomery, Bigelow playfully deconstructed masculinity and machismo in a manner that was one...

As the Academy prepares to debut an award for casting directors at the 2026 Oscars, the timing was right for Francine Maisler to travel this week to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic for a tribute organized by its Industry Days office. Taking the stage for a Kviff Talk with her associate Molly Rose, the renowned casting director admitted she had initially been reluctant to enter the limelight. “Coming here is special for me, because I tend to avoid these things. I’m hired to be behind the camera, not in front.”
Despite such modesty, Maisler had no trouble holding the room for nearly 90 minutes, reflecting not only on her own illustrious career path but praising the legions of actors she has worked with for the last 30-odd years. Francine Maisler, longtime collaborator with Aaron Sorkin and Steven Soderbergh and casting director for “The Revenant,” “The Big Short,” “Little Women,” “Dune” and “The Bikeriders,” says she’s always been obsessed with performance.

Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this September. More here.
The story of The Bikeriders’ journey to the screen wasn’t a short one even before the end of last year, with director Jeff Nichols noodling with the film for two decades before he went ahead and made it. Then, though, after it premiered on the festival circuit last autumn, Disney promptly dropped the movie and left it in limbo. It took Universal and Focus Features swooping in to give the movie the big screen outing it deserved.

This year gifts us the 40th anniversary of the major motion picture “Streets of Fire.” In 1984, Walter Hill’s ambitious “rock & roll fable” sported a killer soundtrack and an all-star cast, how could it possibly have failed? Oh, right, it was released against both “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” (the summer of 1984 was stacked). And that aforementioned all-star cast? Including Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Rick Moranis, Bill Paxton, and Amy Madigan? None of them were famous yet.
But, over the past 40 years, Hill’s “Streets of Fire” has developed quite a robust following. (In 1984, its biggest cultural footprint was probably the song “I Can Dream About You,” performed by fictional group The Sorels in the film and Dan Hartman in reality, which peaked at number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 and got extensive play on MTV.)

Echoing its worldwide box office standing, Indian sci-fi epic “Kalki 2898 Ad” debuted in third place at the U.K. and Ireland box office.
