MTV is strengthening its focus on female viewers with Ladylike, a new hidden camera series from the creators of Girl Code, and three scripted pilot orders. The Amazing Spider-Man and (500) Days Of Summer director is having another pop at small screen comedy with Professionals…
An interesting one, this. The Amazing Spider-Man franchise’s director Marc Webb is looking to get a new TV project off the ground. This is as well as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which he is already attached to direct the pilot for.
In collaboration with David J. Rosen (Us & Them/I Just Want My Pants Back creator), Webb, once assumed to be an incoming giant of comedy after (500) Days Of Summer, will again return to the world of chuckles for Professionals.
This co-project is a comic take on corporate espionage, focusing on two ‘partially-broken mid-level employees’ who get embroiled in some dangerous business. As well as executive producing, Webb is also set to direct at least the pilot episode.

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

It’s pilot season, which means your favorite out-of-work TV actors, actresses, creators and writers are getting a chance to return to the small screen once more.
Although we have yet to know what new series we’ll see next year, the networks have been busy selecting projects to consider for their schedules. So far, almost 100 scripts have been chosen, and audiences will only get to see a handful actually come to fruition.
Several are duds, but there are a few promising prospects that I hope network executives will keep around for the 2013-2014 season — even if it means they have to cancel old favorites to make room (just keep Parks and Recreation, Ok, NBC?).
Check out my choices for the best prospective ABC and Fox pilots, and read my selections for NBC and CBS if you missed them yesterday:

Lawrence is executive-producing a yet-to-be-titled adaptation of I Suck at Girls, a book by Justin Halpern (who will pen the pilot and also serve as an Ep). Exclusive: MTV has decided not to pick up a second season of The Inbetweeners, a remake of the award-winning British series. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of The Inbetweeners, we enjoyed working with the show’s creators and such a talented, funny cast,” MTV spokesperson said. The writing was on the wall for the comedy, which had soft ratings and recently saw its biggest supporters — head of programming David Janollari and co-head of scripted Clay Spencer — depart in an executive shake-up at the cable network that had Susanne Daniels taking over as new programming chief. Besides Teen Wolf — which had big-name recognition and even bigger marketing muscle behind it, including a premiere behind the MTV Movie Awards — and comedy Awkward, MTV has not been able to make a scripted series stick. Shows like Inbetweeners and I Just Want My Pants Back received critical praise but...

In just two episodes, Underemployed has established itself a worthy companion to MTV's suddenly superior slate of small screen shows, like Awkward, Teen Wolf and, yes, the dearly departed I Just Want My Pants Back.
For me, the most compelling character thus far is Michelle Ang's sapphic Sofia, who is chronicling her group's journey to self-discovery. I caught up with the adorable Kiwi (yes, she's from New Zealand) to talk all about her attraction to Underemployed and what fans can expect in the coming weeks!
TheInsider.com: What appealed to you about this show?
Michelle Ang: When I read the pilot script, way back two years ago, it just had a brand of humor that really stood out from the other scripts I was getting. It's funny and witty without trying too hard to be hipster-ironic. It mines humor from real life problems, and that struck a chord with me. I also loved...

Young, inexperienced, and financially desperate; old enough to be on your own, helpless enough that you probably shouldn't be. Educated, frightened, and raised on a steady diet of pop culture that convinced you a tight-knit group of friends was its own kind of family. Oh, to be 22 again.Though if memory serves, thank God I never have to be 22 again. (How many nights did I spend sitting on my stoop, crying into boxes of wine with my roommate? A lot of nights.) And yet, as jammed with drama and ambition and heartache and romance and serendipity as that time is, we haven't had a well-told story set in that weird postcollege transition phase since 1995's Kicking and Screaming. MTV tried with last season's I Just Want My Pants Back, but it was 80 percent arcane vernacular, 10 percent harem pants, and only 10 percent actual recognizable human emotions. The...

Fox has closed a deal to develop Gavin & Stacey, an adaptation of the 2007 British romantic comedy series. The script will be written by David Rosen, creator/executive producer of the MTV cult comedy I Just Want My Pants Back, which also was based on source material — a book. BBC Worldwide Prods. and Sony Pictures TV are producing with the company behind the UK series, Baby Cow Prods. The original series, created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, chronicled the long-distance relationship between a man from England (Matthew Horne) and a woman from Wales (Joanna Page) who start off talking on the phone. They eventually decide to meet, and hit it off — but must navigate their eccentric families and friends (watch a clip below). It ran for three seasons plus a Christmas special and aired in the U.S. on BBC America. The Fox version of Gavin & Stacey focuses on the...

The young-and-delicious slant of MTV Scripted (a phrase that still doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as you'd like it to) has produced a varied roster of mixed results. You can mark current landmarks Awkward. and Teen Wolf (both of which were given record double-sized third season orders) in front of the short-run mediocres (Hard Times of Rj Berger, Human Giant) and the arguable one-run failures, including the scandalous Skins and hipster I Just Want My Pants Back. But it's still not a guarantee that young comedy The Inbetweeners—an adaption of the same-named British series—will be a hit. What it does have going for it, however, is following a stride that the network's past two hits have hit relatively well: it's pretty goddamn funny.
And furthermore, instead of playing up the typical teenage losers-verses-populars debate, The Inbetweeners focuses on a gang of guys who fall somewhere,...

In the past couple of years, MTV's scripted development has made impressive leaps in quality, with both the acclaimed Awkward and the underappreciated and now-canceled I Just Want My Pants Back. Next up is a remake of British series The Inbetweeners, which must have seemed like a no-brainer given how great and audacious that series was at taking the staid coming-of-age theme of teenagers and giving it a newer, filthier vibe. We’ve been loving all the talk and promotion at E3 and Comic-Con about Syfy‘s and Trion Worlds‘ Mmo and TV series Defiance. The trailers for the game look terrific, the series cast is strong, the interviews have been interesting, and we kinda understand how the game will affect the series and vice versa. What’s been missing from all of this is footage from the TV series.
We have now been given hope that this will change, as Syfy has announced that series production officially begins today in Toronto, with the premiere scheduled for April 2013.
