With its list of new releases for May 2023, Hulu is relying on an acclaimed original and a whole lotta FX.
The acclaimed original in question in The Great season 3. Premiering on May 12, this historical black comedy with continue the story of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) and her pal Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). The other Hulu original series of note this month is The Clearing on May 24. Based on the best-selling crime novel In the Clearing this story will follow a story inspired by the real life events behind Australian cult “The Family.”
For its other TV options in May, Hulu is turning to its cable partner FX. Class of ’09, an FBI thriller starring Kate Mara and Brian Tyree Henry, premieres on May 10. That will be followed by The Secrets of Hillsong, a docuseries investigating the controversial church on May 20.

China’s Fantawild Animation has closed multiple theatrical deals on its hit Chinese New Year release Boonie Bears: Guardian Code, including for the UK and France.
The feature has sold to UK (Movie Pioneers/Factoris), France (Factoris), Canada (Cinemaguzzo), Cis (Prime Time Media), Spain (Melies), Turkey (Bir Film), Middle East (Phoenicia), Sub-Saharan Africa (Redhead Global), and Singapore and Malaysia (mm2).
This latest nineth instalment in the animated family franchise is China’s third highest grossing film this year to date, having grossed over $210m (RMB1.46bn) at the local box office.

China’s biggest animation series is back with another sequel, and this time it is… not quite out of this world. Despite Lin Huida’s “Boonie Bears: Back To Earth” meteoric impact – marking history as the highest grossing animated film for Lunar Day Weekend in China at 563mil Rmb and the highest grossing Boonie Bears film in the US at 152mil Usd – it fails to stand out as its own product. This highly-polished cry for the power of friendship feels a little too familiar – making it no more than a spectacle for fluffy entertainment.
