One of 2024’s obsessions is “Feud: “Capote vs. the Swans.” The FX on Hulu limited series revolves around the best-selling novelist Truman Capote‘s friendship with several of the highest of New York’s society women include Babe Paley, Slim Keith and Lee Radziwill, the sister of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The women treat him as a sort of father confessor, but when he publishes an excerpt from what he considers his will be his masterwork “Answered Prayers” in Esquire — a thinly veiled account of their lives and secrets –they feel betrayed and turn their back on their once trusted friend. He spends the rest of his life trying to get back into their good graces.
Everyone knows Capote wrote “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and his superb “In Cold Blood” and was a witty albeit inebriated guest on countless talk shows, but how much do you really know about him?

When Rod Serling won an Emmy for "Outstanding Achievement in Drama" for "The Twilight Zone" in 1960, he was completely taken aback by this well-deserved win. Serling had previously earned several Emmy nominations for the show, having also won two Emmys for "Patterns" and "The Comedian" under the "Best Teleplay Writing" category. However, the writer-producer had good reason to believe that he would not be winning this particular award — he was up against the likes of James Costigan, and his adaptation of "The Turn of the Screw," alongside Loring Mandel, whose "Project Immortality" also emerged as a worthy contender. Costigan's adaptation was especially deemed deserving, as its screenplay was entirely built on visceral suspense, with a brilliant Ingrid Bergman belting out a chilling, memorable performance.
Per Marc Scott Zicree's "The Twilight Zone Companion," Serling was completely unprepared for the win, to the point that he didn't even bother shaving before the broadcast.

In a world where horror often means a bucket of blood and a masked guy with a machete, sometimes the most bone-chilling experiences come from subtle horror. These are the kind of films that creep up on you, leaving you with a sense of unease that’s hard to shake off. They don’t rely on jump scares or grotesque visuals; instead, they master the art of understated horror, proving that sometimes less is indeed more in the realm of fear. So, if you’re tired of the same old slashers and are looking for something that gets under your skin in a more refined way, this list is for you.
This isn’t your average horror flick roundup; it’s a carefully curated list of films that specialize in the kind of subtle, understated horror that haunts you in the quiet moments. From the psychological to the supernaturally surreal,...

The Mike Flanagan Netflix era has come to an end, as Flanagan and his partner Trevor Macy are leaving the streaming service behind for a new deal with Amazon. That means we likely won't ever get a third season of Flanagan's "Haunting" series, which kicked off with the excellent "The Haunting of Hill House" and continued with "The Haunting of Bly Manor." "Hill House" was a (loose) adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, while "Bly Manor" took inspiration from "The Turn of the Screw" and several other ghost stories penned by Henry James. But what tale of terror would Flanagan and company have relied on if the show had returned for a third season?
We now know the answer, thanks to Flanagan himself. The filmmaker has written an introduction for the new Suntup Editions release of Richard Matheson's "Hell House," and in said introduction, Flanagan...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and the works of Edgar Allen Poe.
In recent years, Mike Flanagan has become known for emotional adaptations of classic horror literature. After a series of original films, Flanagan brought Stephen King’s famously unfilmable novel Gerald’s Game to life then set his sights on the work of Shirley Jackson. His Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House dramatically expanded the legendary story and brought us all to tears with an intimate examination of parenting through the years. Flanagan followed this with The Haunting of Bly Manor, a mind-bending take on The Turn of the Screw, and The Midnight Club, a spooky mashup of Christopher Pike’s YA bibliography.

Spoiler warning: This article openly discusses the full plot of “The Others.”
It’s been said many times that every love story is a ghost story, and the pop art of the 21st century would seem to suggest that the opposite is also true.
The rise of “elevated horror,” the traumafication of genre narratives, and the ever-increasing role that supernatural forces appear to be playing in arthouse fare have combined to recenter the heartsick longing — romantic or otherwise — that has always haunted tales of grief and loss, even if only from the shadows or in the subtext. These days, a movie or TV show about ghosts is less likely to scare you than it is to make you cry, and the ones that manage to do both tend to rely on the former as a means of accomplishing the latter; look no further than the work of Mike Flanagan, whose...

When cinephiles of a certain sensibility talk about the best decades for horror, they’ll probably point to the 1980s with its explosion of cutting-edge special effects and home video-induced demand for material. Or they might point to the era of Universal Pictures’ domination in the 1930s, followed up then by the moody Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s. Maybe even a very unpopular kid will try to make an argument for the 2010s, at least until everyone pulls the A24 hat over his eyes and kicks him out.
But moviegoers would be foolish to overlook the 1960s. The decade saw not only two amazing horror flicks from Alfred Hitchcock but also caught the genre in an interesting time of transition. Filmmakers built on the Gothic approach of previous decades by adding a psychological dimension, finding new chills in an established model. Furthermore, the decade saw the first steps toward the ho,...

Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher, like his four previous ones, is a supernatural horror series influenced and inspired by classic works of horror: Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House for Flanagan’s first miniseries, Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw for the follow-up, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, one of the pioneers of Gothic horror, for his fifth and last miniseries for Netflix. It might just be Flanagain's best. Each member of the Usher family, modeled on the likes of the Sacklers, the Koch Brothers, and, among others, the Trumps, represent unfettered, unregulated capitalism, of profit over people, of exploitation without consequence. Each, in turn,...

Like witches, vampires, and zombies, ghosts can be scary as hell. But there is something about the stories of lingering dead spirits that can be both awe-inspiring and spooky at once. The often invisible presence of ghosts allows filmmakers to explore the unsettling aspects of character psychology through the use of sound and space. Some of the best ghost stories aren’t scary at all; instead, they liberate directors from the restrictions of space and time to mine spiritual and existential depths. It’s a genre that has attracted some of the medium’s greatest artists to create some of their finest work.
One of the great aspects of ghost stories are their ambiguity, how their presence reflects more on the humans who see them then the spectral beings themselves. Maybe the great, definitive ghost story in the literary world is Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw,” his 1898 novella...

Gather around, children, and I shall tell you all about the horrors of generational trauma! Mike Flanagan ("Doctor Sleep" and so much more) has created his own little Netflix universe with a series of horror shows that share several cast members as well as several themes, specifically the idea of familial trauma being passed down through the ages and being intertwined with the supernatural.
Flanagan's latest Netflix series is "The Fall of the House of Usher," a spookshow heavily inspired by the works of the Godfather of Goth himself, Edgar Allan Poe. Like most of Flanagan's Netflix horrors, family tragedy plays a big part in the storytelling, which begs the question: How does "Usher" stack up when compared to what's come before? That's where this list comes in handy, as I've set out to rank Flanagan's five Netflix shows from worst to best.

François Truffaut goes deep and morbid adapting a Henry James story about a man who chooses to ‘devote himself to his beloved dead.’ He builds an altar-shrine to a departed bride and comrades that didn’t survive the Great War. A sympathetic woman considers aiding him, but his obsession keeps choosing life-negating directions. It’s a weird, morbid but highly understandable tale from the edge of the fantastic. The cinematographer is Néstor Almendros; the film is part of a 4-title François Truffaut Collection.

Wrapped in a blanket to warm herself from the storm raging outside, the woman senses a ghostly presence, one that visited her in a dream the night before. Mike Flanagan successfully adapted Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" into an emotional gut-punch of a series exploring grief and trauma. While Flanagan based the limited series on the basic beats of Jackson's gothic horror novel, his tale emerged as a meditation on how familiar bonds forever haunt us.
When Flanagan adapted Henry James' 1988 novella "The Turn of the Screw" into a television series, he decided to come up with a show that reinvented James' tale and was distinct from "Hill House." Although "Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" have common thematic threads, the two stories have different approaches to the concepts that drive the show's hauntings. "Bly Manor" situates its horror in the titular haunted mansion, but how the hauntings begin becomes intertwined with concepts like memory, grief, and oblivion.

Mike Flanagan's hit Netflix horror series "The Haunting of Hill House" delivers scares and a visceral ghost story — despite not being faithful to its source material. Adapted from Shirley Jackson's 1950 gothic horror novel of the same name, the 10-part series is centered on a family whose lives have been impacted by their traumatic childhood experience living in a haunted house. It heavily relies on psychological tension and its characters' emotional psyches, but it's devastatingly scary — the story remains with you for a long time after the credits roll.
Jackson's novel is famously considered one of the greatest literary ghost stories of all time, despite not featuring any ghosts. Mike Flanagan threw viewers a bit of a curveball with the second entry in his "Haunting" anthology series, 2020's "The Haunting of Bly Manor." Where the show's revered first outing, 2018's "The Haunting of Hill House," is horror through and through, its mostly well-received but slightly more divisive second entry is really a gothic romance that just happens to include literal ghosts. Yes, I'm using what you might call the "Crimson Peak" defense, but it applies here all the same.
Perhaps even more than "Hill House," "Bly Manor" plays fast and loose with its source material. Mainly a retelling of Henry James' classic 1898 gothic horror novella "The Turn of the Screw," the series adds elements from James' other works while also filling in the gaps in the romance between doomed lovers Peter Quint and Miss Jessel prior to the story's events. Interestingly, though, it wasn't the first off-shoot of James' novella to do this.

In a new year comes new terrors. 2020 is no different than other years for coming releases in the cinematic front. While I see producers turning to the classics and folklore for inspiration in this year's lot, to find original tales is tough. Out is Saw and The Purge, and even Ghostbusters did not make the cut in my list. I like to see the original team back, not the passing of the torch which was obvious in the teaser trailer. I feel these franchises have run it course. Plenty of other choices are there, and in what I'm putting my money on are the following: The Turning January 24th, 2020 Henry James's tale, The Turn of the Screw is a classic for a reason. “I’ve always wanted to do a song for a horror movie so I loved getting to write ‘Feed,'” the Nashville musician said. “It’s a song about letting a demon feed off your body. It was really fun to get to write something a little more imaginative than my other songs.”

There has been a scarcity of Courtney Love music since 2010, but just as the decade prepares to close, rock’s wayward daughter has returned. “Mother,” which is featured on the soundtrack for upcoming horror film The Turning, is a gothic epic where her smoky rasp shines.
Both the film and Love’s contribution to the soundtrack pull directly from Henry James’ classic ghost story The Turn of the Screw. “Mother” serves as a perfect reminder of the type of drama Love has always brought to her music, especially in the...

Who knew The Turn of the Screw was so hot? Henry James’ 1898 horror novella is already the inspiration for two upcoming projects: the horror movie The Turning and the Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor. You might think that two would be enough, but apparently not, because there’s now a third adaptation in the works. This one […]

Exclusive: Quibi has put into development Turn Of the Screw, a modern take on Henry James’ supernatural thriller, from Alexandra McNally (Under the Dome), Josh Berman and Sony Pictures Television, where McNally and Berman’s Osprey Productions are under overall deals.
A twisty Gothic soap reimagined for modern times, the series follows a young Mexican-American nanny who is hired to care for the two children at their summer home on an idyllic island in the Pacific Northwest. It seems like the perfect job, but things take a sinister turn when the nanny begins seeing ghosts and her grip on reality begins to blur.
The project was previously in development at Freeform.
McNally will executive produce with Berman and Osprey’s Head of Development & Production Chris King. Sony Pictures TV is the studio.

The Haunting of Hill House was one of Netflix’s biggest breakout hits of last year, with the horror series winning huge acclaim from both audiences and critics. It wasn’t just the scares that saw the show become so popular though, as it was also an expertly-crafted piece of small-screen filmmaking that featured incredible performances from the ensemble cast as well as some inspired direction, particularly in the sixth episode, “Two Storms.”
Hill House may have come to a definitive conclusion at the end of the first season, but fans and Netflix executives were desperate for the show to continue. In an astute creative decision, creator Mike Flanagan opted to turn the concept into an anthology series, with follow-up The Haunting of Bly Manor bringing back many of the cast members for a period piece based on Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw.

Mike Flanagan certainly has his work cut out for him after the horrifying first season of The Haunting of Hill House. Following the terrific debut, fans can’t wait to watch what the director has in store next and so far, we know that the second chapter in the anthology series is entitled The Haunting of Bly Manor and will reportedly be even scarier than the previous story.
The all-new season was reportedly set to be based around Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, but we’ve now been told that Flanagan is going to have even more material to work with.
In the director’s own words:

Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game director Mike Flanagan confirms that he has more Stephen King projects in mind.
Filmmaker Mike Flanagan is no stranger to high-profile literary adaptations. In 2018, Flanagan created and directed the critically acclaimed The Haunting of Hill House, a 10-episode miniseries based on the seminal haunted house novel by Shirley Jackson. But Doctor Sleep is quite a different monster for the director, a movie that not only adapts a popular Stephen King novel but also serves as a continuation of The Shining, one of the most beloved horror films of all time.
As we wrote in our review, Flanagan largely succeeds with Doctor Sleep, which fuses the story of King's Shining sequel novel with the world created for the big screen by auteur Stanley Kubrick. The result is a match made in hell.

I recently watched The Haunting of Hill House series again on Netflix. It’s easily one of my favorite horror stories of all time and, it being the Halloween season, I had to watch it again! The second season of the anthology series is titled The Haunting of Bly Manor and it is said to be an adaptation of the 1898 novel by Henry James, The Turn of the Screw.
The book tells the story of a governess, who will be played by Victoria Pedretti, who is hired to look after a pair of siblings whose parents had died. However, several ghosts around their manor house exhibit a supernatural hold over the children and the governess starts seeing the ghosts and is terrorized.

“Sometimes one can’t help… imagining things.” Released nearly 60 years ago, Jack Clayton’s The Innocents still remains one of the greatest psychologically charged horror movies ever. Anchored by an all-time performance by Deborah Kerr, whose fragile and frantic governess believes that the children in her care have become possessed by two ill-fated lovers who now utilize the juveniles as a means to continue to not only live on, but experience the joys of childhood once again, The Innocents set the bar for “evil kid” horror in 1961, and its legacy in that regard remains unmatched even now.
Based on playwright William Archibald’s adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, the power of The Innocents lies in its ambiguity and its smothering atmosphere, as it explores the horrors of sexual repression in the Victorian era. Just over a year ago, “The Haunting of Hill House” premiered on Netflix, giving us the chilling story of the Crain family and their twisted relationship with the show’s central, spooky dwelling. While the streaming service has only given us a vague 2020 launch window for its follow-up season, “The Haunting of Bly Manor” creator Mike Flanagan says it’s probably going to come around that same time next year, which would be pegged to Halloween again, of course.
“I don’t know the date but, you know, I left the set to come here,” Flanagan told TheWrap ahead of the Nov. 8 release of “Doctor Sleep,” which he directed. “It’s probably Halloween again, if I had to guess,” he added. “You’re going to like it. It’s cool!”
Production on “Bly Manor” began last month. Netflix did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for confirmation on an October 2020 premiere date.

A spider crawling on someone's face? Ghost hands choking people? Color us terrified, because these are only some of the many scary things that happen in The Turning's ominous trailer, which is complete with a bleak soundtrack reminiscent of Chernobyl. The gist of the story is that a new nanny comes to a mysterious estate and takes care of two creepy, ghost-following kids. The Turning isn't a tale as old as time, but it is a work you might have heard of from English lit. It's a modern adaptation of The Turn of the Screw, the 1898 novella by Henry James. But what happens in James's book, and how does it inform The Turning? Ahead, we break down the main terrifying details that you need to know before watching the movie.
What Is the Original Novella About?

Tagline: "Watch the Children with Care." The Turning is the latest film to find its inspiration from the novella The Turn of the Screw. This film fan has still not read this classic, despite its influences. Now, this latest interpretation will focus on a mysterious estate, in a Maine countryside. Here, a nanny is put in charge of two very special orphans. As well, Italian director Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways) has helmed this feature, with Carey and Chad Hayes adapting the screenplay. The film itself stars: Mackenzie Davis ("Black Mirror"), Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, Mark Huberman, Barbara Marten and Niall Greig Fulton. Now, a trailer and poster are available for this supernatural infused feature. The Turning has been rated PG-13. Though difficult to create challenging horror with a PG-13 rating, The Turning relies on strange imagery to bring the scares. The PG-13 rating is for: terror, violence, disturbing images and suggestive content.

Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard stars in the unsettling new trailer for The Turning, director Floria Sigismondi’s upcoming film adaptation of the 1898 Henry James novella, The Turn of the Screw.
The clip follows Mackenzie Davis as a nanny who lands an unfortunate gig: watching after two creepy kids (Wolfhard and Brooklynn Prince) on their sprawling Maine estate.
After their introductions, the imagery, naturally, grows more disturbing: ghost hands, spiders slithering into mouths, heavy breathing, horses galloping into ominous mists, Wolfhard clanging menacingly on a drum set. “I know what you’re afraid of,...

"I don't go in that part of the house..." Universal has debuted an official trailer for a horror movie titled The Turning, the latest from Italian director Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways). This creepy new the-kids-are-not-alright thriller is a modern take on Henry James' novella "The Turn of the Screw". Starring Mackenzie Davis, with Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, Mark Huberman, Barbara Marten, Niall Greig Fulton, Kim Adis, Denna Thomsen, and Karen Egan. This is a seriously unsettling trailer, with some wickedly disturbing shots - mainly involving spiders. Which freaks me the hell out - and makes this a very scary trailer to watch at night. Tread carefully. Here's the first official trailer for Floria Sigismondi's The Turning, direct from...

Amblin has released the first chilling trailer for their upcoming haunted house horror thriller called The Turning. The movie actually looks like it’s could be pretty terrifying. Their are some wonderfully creepy-ass moments in this trailer.
The film is based on the 1889 Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw, which is the same story that director Mike Flanagan is going to tell with the second season of The Haunting of Hill House, which is called The Haunting of Bly Manor.
The film stars Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate) as a nanny who ends up working in a haunted mansion. The two kids that she is looking over, who are played by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), seem like they are pretty messed up. Here’s the synopsis:

The Crain family is gearing up to get haunted all over again! The actors from Netflix's acclaimed Haunting of Hill House series are set to share the screen once more for the anthology's second season. This time around, they'll depart from the Crain family's storyline for a brand-new spooky adventure based on Henry James's dreary tale The Turn of the Screw.
For Netflix's second installment, The Haunting of Bly Manor, star Victoria Pedretti will play a governess who's hired to watch over two children in a remote estate. “Haunting of Hill House” alum Catherine Parker has joined “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” series creator Mike Flanagan said Friday.
Parker — who played the ghost Poppy Hill on “Hill House” — joins a cast that includes fellow Season 1 alums Henry Thomas, Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Kate Siegel (the latter two castings exclusively reported by TheWrap), who are all returning for Season 2 of the Netflix horror anthology series.
Character details for Parker’s role on “Bly Manor” — which is set to launch in 2020 — are being kept under wraps for now.

“The Haunting of Hill House” star Kate Siegel is returning for “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.
Siegel, who played Theo Crain on “Hill House,” is the fourth Season 1 alum to join Season 2 of the Netflix horror anthology series, following the castings of Henry Thomas, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Victoria Pedretti.
