On the heels of his critically-acclaimed “‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” filmmaker Eric Appel has been tapped as writer and director for a new Sony Pictures comedy.
This project has had an intriguing shelf life. It was originally developed as a script called “Oh Hell No,” set to star rapper Ice Cube and comedian Jack Black. In late 2021, Cube grabbed national headlines when he dropped out of the film weeks before shooting was set to commence in Hawaii. His exit was reportedly attributed to his refusal to receive a Covid-19 vaccine at the request of producers.
Black is still a producer on the revamped “Stepdude,” but does not currently have a deal to star. The premise of “Oh Hell No” saw two men close in age go to war after one develops a romantic relationship with the other’s mother. No updated plot was given for Appel’s pass, except...

A year ago, it appeared that perhaps we would be living in a post-covid world by now, the once-usual certainties again certain, including movie production schedules and release dates. That particular future is still nebulously ahead of us, as is the diverse utopia that Hollywood studio moviemaking is still far from becoming, despite new initiatives introduced over the previous decade to fix that unrelenting “problem.”
Audiences are often quick to pounce on The Academy when its nominees lack diversity, but Oscar voting members are limited to primarily studio output, where measurable diversity in the director’s chair has been stagnant, year, after year, after year. And looking out to 2024, it seems that little is likely to change.
Of the roughly 290 studio films on the calendar through 2024, as of today, just 21 of them are or will be directed by people of color. That’s just over six percent, even though people...

Sony Pictures has a stacked lineup for the Christmas box office this year, with Tom Hanks’ upcoming film “A Man Called Otto” and the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” releasing within days of each other.
“A Man Called Otto,” which was acquired by Sony last week for $60 million out of the European Film Market, will debut in theaters on Christmas Day. TriStar Pictures’ “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” starring Naomi Ackie as Houston, has now moved from Dec. 23 to Dec. 21.
Based on Fredrik Backman’s bestselling novel, “A Man Called Otto” tells the story of a grumpy and strict widower who holds the rest of his neighborhood to his staunch rules. But just as Otto is about to give up on his life, he sparks a new friendship with his neighbors, prompting him to undergo a transformation. The film is directed by Marc Forster, with David Magee adapting the screenplay.

Tonight on SNL, Weekend Update‘s anchors welcomed Ice Cube (Kenan Thompson) to the desk to discuss reports that he’d exited Sony comedy Oh Hell No after declining to get the Covid-19 vaccine.
Cube sported a full beard, noting that he’s going through “a gangster lumberjack phase,” only to have his feet held to the fire by Michael Che.
Why won’t he take the vaccine, the anchor wondered?
“Hey look, man. I’d just rather be myself than take that vaccine, like you other three billion bozos,” said the rapper and actor.
“Yeah, but that’s why you lost this movie,” Che observed.
“Not my loss, your loss. Oh Hell No was going to feature the greatest comedy duo of all time: Ice Cube, Jack Black,” Ice Cube retorted. “The comedy chemistry, man. You know what I’m saying? Try to guess my catchphrase though.”

Actor Ice Cube ("Ride Along") has walked away from a starring role in an upcoming comedy after declining the producers' request to get vaccinated against Covid-19. Cube will no longer appear in "Oh Hell No," which would have paired him with Jack Black ("School of Rock") on screen for the first time. Black is still attached to play one of the lead characters, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the production is pushing back its start date and is on the hunt to find a replacement for Cube. (Jack Black injured himself shooting a bit for the last episode of TBS's...

The comedy is directed by Kitao Sakurai (“Bad Trip”), and also stars Jack Black, who serves as a producer on the film alongside Roz Music and Matt Tolmach (“Venom: Let There Be Carnage”).
