Netflix will raise hell in April 2025 when their anime adaptation of Devil May Cry arrives on the service. The announcement was part of a new trailer for the anime, which is being handled by Korean animation company Studio Mir and creator Adi Shankar.
While it’s certainly not the same style of animation as the 2007 anime series, the trailer does provide plenty of eye candy. Namely, Dante flipping about and flashing his moves, gunplay, and demons.
It’s still unclear as to what the story for the series will be. The appearance of the White Rabbit from the Devil May Cry 3 manga “Code 1: Dante” seems to suggest that the anime takes place before the events of the first game, but that’s speculation on our part.

Some stones are better left unturned is a saying that would fit best with this scenario. While Castlevania did exceptionally well in its first season, its sequel was underwhelming. With most fans calling it a wokefest, it had more to do with the plot development and inconsistencies. And there’s more to it.

The sequel fails to break away from its precursor. This holds especially true for Alucard’s character. With the official release of the Season 2 teaser, the sequel’s purpose was reduced to a mere thirst trap. This was clear as fans on X welcomed the character’s return. Moreover, it also reflects the sequel’s dependency on the original series.

Netflix is primarily known for its live-action series and movies, but the streaming service also has a solid animation library and it has produced several high-profile animated projects, both Western and anime. While the one we are going to talk about in this report is often mislabeled as an anime, it is – nevertheless – one of the biggest animated projects that the streaming service has had.
We are, of course, talking about Castlevania, one of Netflix’s biggest animated projects, whose sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne is currently preparing for its second season, which is going to premiere early next year and will continue the well-known story of the series.
Castlevania: Nocturne is set to be a major hit for Netflix, and the streaming service has just released a new trailer for the upcoming season, confirming a January 2025 release date and revealing more information and visuals from the upcoming season, which certainly seems exciting!

Castlevania: Nocturne rises again.
The fashionable vampires, gnarly night creatures, and hunters who love (to kill) them will return for Season 2 debuting January 2025. The news dropped recently at Geeked Week, the tentpole event that celebrates genre, anime, and other fan-obsessed corners of Netflix.
Nocturne creator and showrunner Clive Bradley and showrunner Kevin Kolde, alongside directors Sam and Adam Deats, break down Season 2, chronicling the epic battle between humankind and the vampire aristocrats seeking to rule the world. But this time, the stakes are bigger and bloodier.
“What I can confidently say is in store for the fans is the biggest, craziest Castlevania fight scene ever,” Kolde tells Tudum.

A 1989 action-platform Konami game sets its supernatural setting in 1476 Wallachia, with Count Dracula ravaging Europe with the aid of a freshly spawned army of monsters. When all efforts to thwart him fail, the people call for the legendary vampire hunter Trevor Belmont — the current wielder of the Vampire Killer whip — who becomes our playable character joined by sorceress Sypha Belnades, pirate Grant Danasty, and the vampire Alucard. This game, "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse," later laid the foundation for the first season of Netflix's "Castlevania," and the four-season series went on to expand upon these legacy characters in ways that elevate the source material's dizzying, captivating lore. Although the "Castlevania" games are still beloved to this day, the Netflix series helped popularize the franchise's most memorable aspects, all the while wrapping up the lore in a blood-splattered spectacle that can both thrill and horrify.

When we think about popular animated series inspired by video games, there are plenty, but only a few do actual justice to the storyline. This can be said for the Castlevania franchise, the dark fantasy animated series that premiered in 2017 and turned out to be a massive hit.

The series, written and directed by Warren Ellis, highlighted Vlad Dracula Tepes’ quest for revenge after his wife was burned by the alleged rumors of being a ‘witch’. It also features Trevor Belmont as the vampire hunter who attempts to foil Dracula’s plans.
While the franchise’s first four seasons did amazingly well, its sequel garnered mixed reviews from fans. For some, it was a breath of fresh air, but for others, it was a literal pain in the neck.

From Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to God Eater, video games getting an animated adaptation aren’t uncommon in the community. Castlevania, inspired by the Nes classic Castlevania III and the long-forgotten 3D game, quickly became a fan-favorite after its Netflix debut. The fans were taken aback by Castlevania: Nocturne‘s enthralling plot and the complexities between good and evil.

Warren Ellis, the creator of the Castlevania animation, captivated viewers with the splendid narrative of antagonists. Furthermore, Ellis’s tale adds a lot of depth to the villains’ nature, such as Dracula, Alucard, Lenore, and others.
Throughout the series, the creator explores the morality of vampires and humans. The Castlevania series also highlights humans’ greed for power, which portrays them as more villainous and evil than the bloodthirsty vampires in the eyes of the audience.

The success of Netflix’s Castlevania led to the creation of a spin-off series called Castlevania: Nocturne. Many fans believed that the first season of Castlevania: Nocturne, which was released in September 2023, was much better than its parent series, and the reason behind that is the big gamble played by the directors of the series.
Castlevania: Nocturne Season 1| Powerhouse Animation Studios
The gamble was that they included a lot of different aspects into a single season, which ideally should have made the series more disorganized, but somehow they managed to keep the series grounded and under their control. They maintained a balance that kept the flow of the series smooth and avoided any disruptions that could have damaged the narrative.
This helped Castlevania: Nocturne become bigger than Castlevania, which followed a similar path and almost failed. The creators learned from the parent series and decided not to repeat the same mistake once again,...

Characters are always better when their individuality stands out. Castlevania: Nocturne takes this a step further. Being the spinoff of an already acclaimed series, there were a lot of factors relying on the making of the show that did not include characters coming back or the fact that it was a video game adaptation.

Another thing that was kept in mind was the introduction of a new protagonist. Trevor Belmont would no longer be taking the reigns and instead, Richter Belmont was to rise. Not only was he much younger, but the task came before them not to make him an exact same character or a different version of Trevor. Keeping all these things in mind, it was an entirely new series in an already established world. That is, new elements to play with and more to blend into.

Historical events mixed with the fantasy of an anime series are always a great combination. This was recently proven by Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne, written by Clive Bradley. The series merged the narrative of vampires with the historical French Revolution, which started in 1789, and gave a compelling storyline that is being loved by anime fans.

While the first season of the series captured the essence of the French Revolution, there was one particular aspect that grabbed the attention of the creators, and they were forced to include it. This was the Haiti Revolution, and in the series, this revolution was portrayed through the character of Annette, an Afro-Caribbean slave.
The directors of Castlevania: Nocturne once revealed that they were excited to learn about the Haitian Revolution and adapt it in accordance with Annette’s character, who also happens to be a descendent of the magical Orishas and is a witch.

The special element of Castlevania: Nocturne that may potentially make it bigger than its prequel series is the combination of history and fantasy. The narrative of the series takes place during the 1792 French Revolution, 300 years after the original series of Castlevania, and it did a brilliant job combining the two.
Castlevania: Nocturne | Netflix
The story explains the nightmare of vampires mixed with the political and social conflict in the region and adds a new perspective to it. The main character of the series is Richter Belmont, a descendant of the famous Belmont family, that has spent generations fighting against the vampires.
However, initially, this became a big problem for the creators of the widely popular Netflix series. Executive Producer Kevin Kolde and Sam Deats revealed during the release of Castlevania: Nocturne that the historical and mystical elements of the show became such a big problem that they could have potentially ruined the show.

Netflix isn't just known for cancellations, especially in recent years.
It's also the reigning champion of spontaneous cancellations, catching fans off-guard and delivering some real gut punches.
Some refer to it as a cancellation loop, and it's making viewers wary of investing their time and subscription money on new and exciting shows.
Netflix is dealing with the self-inflicted wounds that come with popular shows, forcing them into an endless loop that's not based on reality but perception.
It's also changing successful, tried-and-true storytelling formulas and driving creators to other streaming platforms so their product stands a chance at longevity.
To be fair, this is not unique to Netflix, especially as other streaming platforms continue to grow.
But Netflix is the Og with the most shows and brand recognition.
Because of that, the damage to the brand from especially infamous cancellations feels more extensive to fans.

Castlevania, Netflix’s animated series inspired by Konami’s video game, has received steady attention over the years. After four seasons, the saga of Alucard concluded in 2021.
Another sequel series, Castlevania: Nocturne, debuted in 2023 focusing on Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor and Sypha. It is one of the few series that have performed well despite being adapted from a game, and in an interview, Kevin Kolde, the executive producer behind the series, discussed the ups and downs of the franchise.

Castlevania Season 2 | Netflix, Powerhouse Animation
The video game curse is a common term that refers to the phenomena of series or movies adapted from video games that end up performing horribly. Many of these adaptations have poor writing as well as visuals and incorporate too many original elements. This makes people distance it from the original game, and the media ends up failing.

The Executive Producer of Castlevania and its spin-off series, Castlevania: Nocturne, Kevin Kolde, is one of the brilliant minds who helped create one of the best anime series on Netflix. The series became such a success that not only did it have four recurring seasons but also a sequel-spinoff series that featured a different story but with the same theme.

Kolde has worked on some major projects, but there is one narrative that he is desperate to work on, as it features his favorite storyline. The Netflix animated series Castlevania ended its four-season run in 2021. Based on the popular video games from the Japanese company Konami, the show adapted the third game in the series for two seasons before moving on to other stories in the third and fourth. The show’s final two seasons received polarizing responses.
While the show has impressed fans in most instances, it has also been notorious for not listening to fans’ demands. The final season sees Dracula survive the showdown between him and protagonist Trevor Belmont and introduces Death into the lore of the show. When asked if the fans’ demands were part of the decision, producer Kevin Kolde mentioned that they do not listen to the fans all the time.

When the new spin-off sequel series of Castlevania was announced, fans were delighted to see the return of the dark fantasy anime series with a new twist. While the central theme of the series was the same, it introduced a new storyline, some new characters, and a new threat that helped shape the success of the series’ first season.
Castlevania: Nocturne | Powerhouse Animation Studios
The series followed the adventures of Richter Belmont, the heir of the famous vampire hunter Belmont family. He, along with his adoptive sister, Maria Renard, and some more allies, tried to stop the rise of vampires during the French Revolution. The series is a blend of horror and fantasy, with a lot of drama and action.
However, all these new elements of Castlevania: Nocturne were shaped around the return of one character from the previous Castlevania anime series. The character is none other than Alucard, one...

Maintaining its status as a vast churning mill of content, Netflix has regularly made giant leaps in original content making. To keep new titles coming in, it has often turned to adapting existing novels and video games such as The Witcher. However, with animation, the streaming giant faced disappointments with cancellations of projects like Ember and Cattywumpus. Yet, its fortune has always given way to critical acclaim with the Castlevania series, including Castlevania: Nocturne.

When Netflix released its first-ever Engagement Report — a revealing look into what (and how much) people are watching within the streamer’s film and TV catalog — live-action adult and young adult series like Ginny and Georgia, The Night Agent and Fubar were among those that topped nearly a billion hours watched.
But between January and June 2023, seasons of animated originals Sonic Prime, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, My Dad the Bounty Hunter and The Creature Cases also ranked among the 500 most-viewed series (out of 18,000), as did acquisitions like Paw Patrol, CoComelon, Pj Masks and Peppa Pig.
And while much of the streamer’s most popular animated content came from its kids and family programming, the report reveals new and previously released seasons of adult animation and anime entries like Castlevania, Love, Death & Robots, Bee and Puppycat, Disenchantment, Big Mouth, and Skull Island were among the top 22 percent of watched titles.

Baldur’s Gate III got the better of Alan Wake 2 last night at The Game Awards 2023. Despite both games having 8 nominations, Larian Studios’ RPG snagged five wins, including the coveted Game of the Year. Baldur’s Gate III also won the awards for Best Community Support, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer, and the Player’s Voice.
Fortunately, Alan Wake 2 didn’t walk away empty-handed. Remedy’s return to Bright Falls won the awards for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction. Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil 4, however, was not so fortunate. The remake was shut out of all of its nominations, while Resident Evil Village won its only nomination in the Best VR/Ar Game category.
Resident Evil 4 had company in the goose egg category, as Dead Space, Dredge, Diablo IV, Mortal Kombat 1, Dead Island 2 and Remnant II were all shut out.

Shadow And Bone, Glamorous and Agent Elvis are among the five shows Netflix is cancelling, it’s been announced.
Netflix has announced that it’s cancelling a handful of its original TV shows in the wake of the recent Hollywood strikes. The shows affected are, in no particular order, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, Captain Fall and Shadow And Bone.
Of these, Shadow And Bone is perhaps the most high-profile; a fantasy series based on the books by Leigh Bardugo, it was headed up by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Heisserer (he wrote the script for Arrival). Featuring a sprawling ensemble cast which included Jessie Mei, Kit Young and Zoe Wanamaker, Shadow And Bone ran for two seasons and was generally well received, with Netflix – which is usually secretive about viewing figures – saying that the first season had been watched by 55m households worldwide.

When the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes got underway earlier this year, many Netflix shows were left with fates up in the air.
Now that the strikes are over and Hollywood is getting back to normal, the series won't be making the cut for additional seasons are being revealed.
Deadline revealed Wednesday that Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall will not be returning.
Shadow & Bone is the highest profile of the five shows, having made it to a second season.
Despite the freshman season garnering considerable buzz, Shadow & Bone Season 2 launched earlier this year to little fanfare.
Based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone Season 2 follows Alina Starkov, who is now on the run.
The series stars Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej Ghafa), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik...

Netflix has canceled five original series in the aftermath of the Hollywood double strike. The streamer decided not to renew live-action dramas “Shadow and Bone” and the Kim Cattrall-led “Glamorous,” along with animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzar” and “Captain Fall.”
The news comes as the streamer evaluates the impact of the long work stoppage related to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. There have been cancellations and un-renewals across the industry related to the production halt, with many freshman series particularly vulnerable since it would take too long for them to turn around new episodes and stay in the cultural conversation.
Exceptions include hit series like “The Night Agent” and “One Piece,” who’s impressive debuts guaranteed them quick renewals even during the strikes.
“Shadow and Bone” is the only sophomore series in the bunch. A hit in its first season, the show is inspired by the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo.

“Shadow and Bone” and “Glamorous,” along with adult animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall” will not be returning for new seasons at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and broadcasters continue to assess the impact left by the work stoppages due to the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. Sources say Netflix’s decision to cancel stemmed from various reasons including performance and impact from the strike — as the industry evaluates production schedules, scheduling shifts, etc.
As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewing versus cost as it evaluates shows. In the case of series like “Agent Elvis,” “Glamorous,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall,” each show only ran for one season before its cancellation. While “Shadow and Bone” received a cancellation after running its second season, which arrived on the streamer in March.

‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.
The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.
While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

Gaming’s biggest awards night returns on December 7 with The Game Awards 2023, and the nominees are in across more than 30 categories. As expected, it’s crowded at the top for nominations, with Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate III and Alan Wake II leading the way with 8 nominations each.
The big question (as with most years) is the Game of the Year Award. This year, Baldur’s Gate III and Alan Wake II are up for the award, but Nintendo has an edge with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is also nominated, as is Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake, which has three nominations in total.

The Game Awards 2023 panel has revealed the full list of nominees who will be eligible to win at this year’s show. While many of the nominees are relatively unsurprising, there are certainly a few games that did (and didn’t) get nominated that will get people talking.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Game Awards 2023’s nominees and voting process.
The Game Awards 2023: How Voting Works
According to the Game Awards website, Game Awards winners are determined by a “blended vote” that accounts for jury votes and fan votes. The jury votes account for 90% of the voting weight while the fan votes make up the remaining 10%.
Though an example of that formula is not provided, it’s basically best to think of the system like a 10-person voting jury. Nine of the jurors would represent voting individuals of the group, and the 10th person would...

David Beckham scored a goal with his latest Netflix docuseries.
Beckham took the top spot among the streamer’s English-language series in its debut week, securing 12.4M views.
That means that Sex Education Season 4 was knocked down a peg, but it still managed to hold onto No. 2 with 6.6M views — which is quite a drop from the 13.4M views it secured the week prior. It must have been a slow week for streaming though, because that was nearly twice the amount of views as Love Is Blind Season 5, which came in at No. 3 with 3.7M.
One Piece remains on the list for its sixth week in a row at No. 4, this time taking home an additional 2.5M views. Season 5 of Virgin River logged its fifth week on the list, taking sixth place with 2M views.
The rest of the list included several docuseries — Encounters at #5 (2M views), Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal...
