Beloved actor Maggie Smith has died at the age of 89, it has been confirmed. The news was announced by her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin in a statement. “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” it reads. “She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”
Smith’s career spanned several decades, across both stage and screen – she began her theatre career in the early 1950s, while her screen career began in earnest with 1958’s Nowhere To Go. Her cinematic breakout role came in the 1965 adaptation of Othello, in which she played Desdemona – and was nominated for an Oscar. The film also starred Michael Gambon...

Black Clover by Yuki Tabata is extremely popular among Shonen fans, but it is hardly receiving the recognition it deserves. The anime is on indefinite hiatus, manga chapters are serialized just a few times a year, and Yuki Tabata seems to have little to no support in the marketing of the series.

One of the most common treatment that any hit Shonen anime/manga receives is the creation of fighter games, Naruto, My Hero Academia, Dragon Ball, you name it and each and every one of them have their own fighter games. What does Black Clover have? Just a single RPG shooter game that’s closeto shutting down due to a lack of players.

“The Fabulous Four,” Bette Midler’s ensemble wedding comedy costarring Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally and Sheryl Lee Ralph, features more than just four funny acting performances from the powerhouse quartet. The late-in-life bridesmaids have a couple musical surprises up their sleeves, too.
Marilyn (Midler) is getting married and has invited her three lifelong girlfriends to celebrate with her in Key West. Her husband, who she stole from her so-called best friend Lou (Sarandon) back in the day, died only six months before the engagement, but Marilyn is ready for a second wind.
Ralph and Mullally join the wedding party for some silly, sexy antics, too — penis antennae and Kegal balls may be involved.
Musical theater vets Midler and Ralph sing a surprise duet of Jimmy Cliff’s “I Can See Clearly Now.” And Mullally joins Michael Bolton for a cameo to perform “One Life,” written by the Grammy Award winner himself.

Palm Springs International Film Festival programmers have set this year’s lineup.
The desert festival, which runs Jan. 4 to 15, will open with the U.S. premiere of Thea Sharrock’s Wicked Little Letters on Jan. 5. Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Anjana Vasan, Malachi Kirby, Eileen Atkins and Timothy Spall star in the film.
Though the opening screening happens on Jan. 5, the festival really kicks off the night before with the Film Awards, a starry ceremony that will shine a spotlight on Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things star Emma Stone, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy,...

When it comes to exploiting our deepest, darkest fears, nothing jangles the nerves more effectively than a well-made home invasion flick. We all want to believe we're safe once we lock the doors and windows, but unless you live in a fortress, you know that if someone really wanted to get in your house, they could do so with relative ease. Typically, we're worried about burglars, but we know vicious people exist. We've read Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and watched Michael Haneke's "Funny Games," and know, deep down in our hearts, once intruders cross the threshold, it's not going down like Kevin McCallister versus the Wet Bandits. Because anyone bold enough to break into a house is either desperate or disturbed, and this places us at a severe disadvantage.
No 21st-century film has exploited this to more terrifying effect than Bryan Bertino's "The Strangers." The premise...

It’s a slow week for new releases, both in theaters and at home. “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret” deserves to be an Oscar contender — let’s get Rachel McAdams‘ supporting-actress campaign started pronto — but you’ll have to leave the couch to see that one. Without venturing to the multiplex, you can catch two favorites from the Oscars’ most recent shortlists and two new movies with very different sensibilities.

Four of the most prominent women to ever be on screen come together for a heartwarming story about the importance of friendship. ‘80 for Brady’ is inspired by a true story of a group of women over the age of eighty from Massachusetts that were the “80 for Brady Club.” Known for their love of Tom Brady, these women would get together each Sunday to watch the New England Patriots play. Scripted by the writers of ‘Booksmart,’ Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, with an independent producer of ‘The Climb,’ Kyle Marvin making his directorial debut creates an adequate piece that does not feel the need to exceed what it is. The script, almost a long sitcom, plays out the situational humor with the day-to-day reality of their age being the stimulant. The best moments directed by Marvin are when the four actresses are able to inhabit the space available to them. The chemistry between Jane Fonda,...

Dustin Hoffman is one of the most highly respected actors in Hollywood history, delivering great performances since the 1960s. Although he first started acting in off-Broadway productions, Hoffman quickly became an important figure in the New Hollywood era. New Hollywood, also known as the "American New Wave," was a generation of groundbreaking artists in the late 1960s and 1970s. Hoffman worked with many of the prominent directors, writers, and performers involved in the movement. What's more, he continues to challenge himself. In film history, the anthology genre is the most challenging. Episodic films often have several directors and screenwriters which gives them an inconsistent tone and quality. But the genre’s pitfalls haven’t stopped such filmmakers including Akira Kurosawa (“Dreams”), the Coens (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”), Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez (“Sin City”); Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese (“New York Stories”); and Joe Dante, John Landis, George Miller and Steven Spielberg (“Twilight Zone: The Movie”).
Wes Anderson joined them with his latest film “The French Dispatch,” which received a nine-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. The comedy brings to life three stories from an American magazine published in a fictional French city and features his stock company of actors including Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson.

‘Bridgerton’: Netflix Hit Series Boosts Original Novel Sales, Vitamin String Quartet Catalog Streams
Bridgerton, which has become Netflix’s biggest series ever, continues to raise the bar as the series-turned-cultural phenomenon handed Julia Quinn and the Vitamin String Quartet boosts in book sales and streams, respectively. Netflix revealed that following the show’s explosive December debut, Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novels moved up into the New York Times Best Sellers list, with The Duke and I holding the list’s top spot for four weeks. At some point in January, five novels from Quinn’s Bridgerton saga were among the New York Times’ top 10 best-selling books. The Shondaland series, however, isn’t the only book-inspired Netflix title getting literary love. Kristin Hannah’s Firefly Lane appeared on the Top 10 list a month before the show’s premiere and currently remains at #5. Netflix added that Walter Tevis’ The Queen’s Gambit and Maurice Leblanc’s original 1907 work Lupin also saw an increase in sales upon...

The pandemic has upended many film anniversary tribute plans, as well as inspired others. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Darren Aronofsky’s iconic Hubert Selby adaptation, Requiem for a Dream, its soundtrack players, the Kronos Quartet, perform composer Clint Mansell’s now iconic theme. Of course, they’re appropriately distanced and masked. Listen here to a lovely version of a track that’s graced countless indie film mood reels in the two decades since its composition. Lionsgate has released a new 4K Blu-ray edition of the film you can read about here.

So you thought compact discs were a dead format? Not to soundtrack collectors. Film music labels continue to thrive, turning from current scores to, increasingly, limited-edition expansions and even new recordings of classic scores from the past.
Many film studios have (as they did in the 1950s and ’60s) formed their own in-house music labels and frequently release digital-only albums of their movie and TV soundtracks. So the traditional soundtrack labels are focusing more on older, classic material, often expanding the old 30-to-40 minute albums to CD length of 75 minutes or more. They’re also tracking down and licensing previously unreleased soundtracks of interest to collectors.
It’s a business model that seems to be working for more than a dozen labels in the U.S. and Europe that are devoted to releasing music from movies and TV. Here then, alphabetically, are our choices for the best classic film music...

Hollywood had handled the topic of divorce on the big screen before 1979’s “Kramer vs. Kramer,” from the 1934 musical “The Gay Divorce” with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire to 1967’s “Divorce American Style” with Dick Van Dyke and Debbie Reynolds. The year previously brought a female-centric focus to a break-up caused by a husband’s extra-marital affair with a younger woman in 1978’s “An Unmarried Woman,” as Jill Clayburgh discovers life without a louse of a spouse is actually quite liberating and enriching.
But the fracturing of a family unit was rarely handled in fully realistic emotional terms until 1979’s “Kramer vs. Kramer,” in which the cause of the parting of ways was Meryl Streep‘s stay-at-home mother’s feelings of being smothered and unfulfilled by her matriarchal duties. It was an era when gender roles began to shift as more women looked to pursue a career outside of the...

(Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
Reactions to Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” predictably run the gamut, but there seems to be a general consensus that Florence Pugh is fantastic in the lead role. In the aftermath of Toni Collette’s work in “Hereditary,” and Essie Davis’ memorable turn in “The Babadook,” there’s been something of a renewed appreciation for horror movies as a vehicle for strong performances.
This week’s question: What is the best and/or most indelible performance you’ve seen in a horror film, and how did it leverage the genre to accomplish something that might not have been possible in a more grounded type of movie?

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

"You're not going to talk to anybody about this, are you?" Cohen Media Group has debuted a brand new official trailer for their re-release of the classic romantic drama Quartet, set in Paris in the 1920s. This was the 11th feature film directed by James Ivory, adapted from Jean Rhys's 1928 autobiographical novel of the same name. It originally premiered at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival and opened in theaters later that year. The film has been restored and remastered for this re-release, and will play in a few theaters again starting soon. Marya, as played by Isabelle Adjani, finds herself penniless after her art dealer husband, Stephan, is convicted of theft. She accepts the hospitality of a strange couple, H.J. and Lois Heidler, as played by Alan Bates and Maggie Smith, who let her live in their house. The cast also includes Anthony Higgins, Sebastien Floche, and Suzanne Flon.

Most cinephiles associate the Merchant Ivory catalogue with English dramas like “A Room With a View” and “Howards End” — even the film company’s own Wikipedia page makes amusing note of how many of their best-known features follow “genteel characters who suffer from disillusionment and tragic entanglements” and often involve some kind of house — but with 44 films in its library, Merchant Ivory contains its own vastly different multitudes.
One such unexpected entry: the Jean Rhys adaptation “Quartet,” inspired by the “Wide Sargasso Sea” author’s own experiences as an up-and-comer in swinging Paris. While the film’s pedigree is classic Merchant Ivory — written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, directed by James Ivory, produced by Ismail Merchant — its subject matter and tone are a fair bit different than some of the more staid dramas in the company’s oeuvre. For one thing, it’s a surprisingly dramatic story of a love triangle gone darkly awry.

Isabelle Adjani, the Oscar-nominated star of François Truffaut’s “The Story of Adele H.” and Bruno Nuytten’s “Camille Claudel,” presided over the Cannes jury in 1997, the year of the festival’s 50th anniversary.
Heading the panel is “a very intense experience and at times a difficult mission when it comes to judging the work of other artists, and defending your emotions and ideas against those of other jury members,” says Adjani, who is a fan of incoming president Cate Blanchett. Adjani reportedly clashed with directors Mike Leigh and Nanni Moretti in choosing the winner of the 1997 Palme d’Or, with the jury eventually deciding to give the award to two films, Shohei Imamura’s “The Eel” and Abbas Kiarostami’s “Taste of Cherry.”
“The film world continues to be dominated by men,” says Adjani, one of the first and few French stars to have publicly voiced her support for the #MeToo movement.
