Filming kicked off this month on the HBO Max series “Welcome to Derry,” an official prequel to the two Stephen King-based It movies from Andy Muschietti. Taking to Instagram over the weekend, Muschietti shared a first-look behind the scenes photo from the set.
The photo, which you’ll find below, shows us the office door of Derry’s Chief of Police Clint Bowers, a new member of the Bowers family we’ll be meeting in “Welcome to Derry.”
Henry Bowers was of course the leader of the Bowers Gang that tormented the Losers’ Club in Stephen King’s classic horror story, and we’ve also met Butch Bowers (Henry’s father) and Connor Bowers (Henry’s cousin) in Muschietti’s movie adaptations. Butch Bowers was a cop, so it makes sense that another family member was the Chief of Police some years prior.
But who exactly is Clint Bowers?...

Coming soon from HBO Max, the series “Welcome to Derry” will serve as a prequel to the two Stephen King movies from Andy Muschietti, but will Bill Skarsgård be returning?
Bill Skarsgård of course played the iconic killer clown in Muschietti’s two movies, but he reveals in a new chat with Jake’s Takes that at this moment he’s *not* involved in the series.
“We’ll see what they come up with and what they do with it. I’m not currently involved in it,” Skarsgård explains to the show. “If someone else gets to [play Pennywise], my advice is to make it your own. Have fun with it. What I thought was so pleasurable about that character was how incredibly abstract he was. The book is really a gift that way.”

Warner Bros. Discovery has been the subject of much controversy over the past six months. From scrapping the nearly complete $90 million “Batgirl” movie to removing content en masse from HBO Max to canceling dozen of shows, Wbd has turned heads with its extreme cost-cutting measures. However, those measures have paid off according to Wbd CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels.

With the rise of the streaming era and the dominance of social media came a keener awareness of if — and when — your new favorite show is going to get the axe. But knowing the end is coming doesn't make it hurt less. In fact, there's a growing resentment around shows that clearly have a fanbase, but that don't pull in subscribers in large enough numbers to satisfy executives. After the fates of Netflix's "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" and AMC's "Moonhaven," which was killed after a promising early renewal, we're having more trouble falling in love with new shows than ever before.
But there's something even worse than a brief fling with a great new series: getting a glimpse of one, and then never being able to watch any of it at all. It's tough for any new show, especially high-budget science fiction series, to get out of pilot episode limbo,...

Creatives are burning with rage over Hollywood’s hottest new trend: streaming platforms’ habit of canceling finished films and TV series before they’ve aired or pulling projects from platforms and shelving them indefinitely.
The Hollywood Reporter has been asking around about the effects of consolidation, budget cuts and tax write-offs kneecapping projects like Batgirl, Snowpiercer, Scoob!: Holiday Haunt and Westworld, among others. It’s happening all over town as entertainment companies have been forced to contend with consolidation, inflation, a possible recession and a constant chase for subscribers.
“It’s been horrifying,” prolific creator Rian Johnson (Glass Onion) tells THR. “The fact that it’s becoming common practice is terrible and adds to the awfulness. In the history of the business, there has been a constant evolution of horrible things.”
Last month, THR reported that two Netflix feature films were up for grabs after the streamer opted not to distribute the films.

AMC is splitting up with Soulmates.
The cable network is not moving forward with the planned second season of the anthology series.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news, adding that the decision was made to cancel the series last year.
While AMC has caught a lot of heat for canceling previously renewed shows, the demise of Soulmates is said to be due to scheduling issues.
Brett Goldstein's busy schedule with Ted Lasso and Shrinking are said to have been a part of the reason for the cancellation.
But the show was never a winner in the ratings for the cabler.
THR notes the first season averaged fewer than 200,000 viewers across its initial season in 2020.
"We were immediately drawn to the unique premise of Soulmates as it explores love and relationships from several touchpoints in a way that naturally feeds the zeitgeist, prompting conversations around human connection, relationships and happiness,...

Add Soulmates to the list of shows that have been “unrenewed.”
AMC has reversed coursed on the previously announced second season for the sci-fi anthology from creators Will Bridges (Black Mirror) and Emmy winner Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso).
Sources say the decision to cancel the show was made quietly last year with factors including Goldstein’s busy schedule as a writer and exec producer on both Apple’s Shrinking and Ted Lasso, the latter of which he also stars in. Other factors include Soulmates’ lackluster ratings as the six-episode first season averaged less than 200,000 viewers during its linear run on AMC. The series was also available at the launch of AMC+ before making its linear debut a few days later.
AMC renewed Soulmates in August 2020 — two months before its premiere and before Ted Lasso became a breakout hit for Apple, making Goldstein and his surly Roy Kent instant fan favorites.

On the way from HBO Max is a series titled “Welcome to Derry,” which will serve as a prequel to the two Stephen King movies from Andy Muschietti, and THR reports this afternoon that the project has now officially been given a straight-to-series order!

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.
“I got several DMs from people who saw it in-flight on American Airlines, where a few episodes are still available, and they ended up finishing the season on HBO Max,” Forestieri told Deadline.
But the consolation prize of keeping the show on the platform was short-lived: less than five months after The Gordita Chronicles was canceled, all 10 episodes were removed as part of a library purge that impacted dozens of programs on HBO Max.
At least Forestieri wasn’t alone in getting the boot. In the last few months, scores of shows have been yanked from various platforms, including Westworld, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife,...

Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches is set to fly again after being renewed for a second season at AMC.
The cable network is bringing back the series, which along with Interview with a Vampire is part of its extended Anne Rice universe, after becoming its number one new series premiere on its streaming service AMC+.
This comes despite a plethora of recent cancelations at AMC Networks. The company pulled Demascus and Invitation to a Bonfire as well as second seasons of Pantheon, Moonhaven and 61st Street, which were in various stages of completion and production, as part of a major cost-cutting drive.

It has all the makings of a new and disturbing trend in television — companies taking fully produced, unaired series and moving them off their books — but insiders are hesitant to say whether cancellations like what we saw today at Showtime, as well as what has happened at Warner Bros. Discovery, AMC, Starz, Netflix and Peacock over the last few months, is becoming the new normal.
Consider it more of a one-time “right-sizing,” they say.
“I don’t think those companies are going to want to make a practice of this on an ongoing basis,” a partner at a talent agency tells Deadline. “They’ve done it and they weren’t burned to the ground by the town, but the reaction was really, really strong. The promise of an unlimited future for television content has run into the economic realities of a business driven by unpredictable market forces. A recent shift in strategy for the largest producers of content has become apparent in recent weeks: Major networks and streamers have reversed course and canceled previously ordered or renewed series — and even halted plans to launch already produced programs. Every outlet scraps a series or two from time to time. But the past 12 months have seen an unprecedented number of about-face decisions on greenlights and renewals.
As executives, producers and top creative talent descended on the Television Critics Assn. press tour this month in Pasadena, the overriding theme of conversations was about the state of the cable and pay TV marketplace, which is still slogging through a difficult transition from linear to streaming.

Warner Bros. Discovery took a lot of flak in 2022 for axing finished movies and series — most infamously, the Batgirl movie — and removing some legacy titles from its HBO Max streaming platform. As it turns out, the company may have been ahead of the curve.
A fresh wave of cost-cutting moves at other companies, ranging from Disney to AMC Networks, has made Wbd CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels seem prophetic.
“We got a lot of public noise about some of the content write-offs that we took, which is a reflection of an industry that went overboard and that went on a spending frenzy,” Wiedenfels said at a Citibank conference on Jan. 5. “We shaved off a lot of the excess last year, and I think that’s something that everyone else in the industry is going to go through. At first, it seemed like a bizarre anomaly: In August, Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav decided to shelve the already-finished HBO Max “Batgirl” movie — forever. Many more projects were not only canceled but also removed from their services, ranging from already-renewed series fresh off of their first seasons and in production on the second (like “Minx”) and others that were supposed tentpoles (like “Westworld”).
Dozens of culled shows and movies later, HBO Max had a hastily dug graveyard strewn with existing content mowed down by accountants. It looked like bean-counters gone wild — but when Wbd currently holds nearly 47 billion in net debt, every dollar counts.
“We’re done with that chapter,” Wbd CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said last week of the barrel-burn. He referred to 2022 as “a year of restructuring” and 2023 as “a year of relaunching and building.”
Wbd may be done right-sizing its pipeline — but the industry is not.

“We’re done with that chapter,” Wbd CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said last week of the barrel-burn. He referred to 2022 as “a year of restructuring” and 2023 as “a year of relaunching and building.”

The cancellation spree at AMC Networks is showing no signs of slowing down.
Deadline reported over the weekend that Pantheon, which was picked up for a two-season run, has been scrapped after a single season.
Moreover, the second season was already in the can, but the episodes are not expected to see the light of day.
Another big blow to fans is that the first season has been purged from AMC+, so not only has the show been canceled, but the entire series isn't available to stream.
According to reports, AMC Networks is looking for a tax write-down of around 400 million, meaning that many more projects could be canceled.
Given that Pantheon has a whole season in the can, there's a chance the show could materialize at another outlet.
Warner Bros. Discovery nixed several HBO and HBO Max projects last year, and some of them are starting to get new homes at other outlets.

Exclusive: Animated drama series Pantheon, which stars the voices of Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Dano and Taylor Schilling, is the latest series to be scrapped at AMC Networks.
The series has been canceled after one season, despite a two-season order, and pulled from AMC’s streaming service as part of the company’s cost-cutting drive. The second season, which had been produced, will not air.
Pantheon joins shows such as Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and the second seasons of 61st Street and Moonhaven, which were all axed as part of a one-time tax write-down at the end of last year.
This write-down features around 400M of content and was revealed in an SEC filing in December.
“As a result of the Plan, the programming assessments pertain to a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation...

Fans of Station 19 will have to wait a bit longer to see Okieriete Onaodowan’s return to television. AMC has canceled Demascus — in which Onadowan would have played the title character — after production on the sci-fi comedy had already begun. According to Deadline, which reported the cancellation news, the demise of Demascus is part of the same AMC Networks tax write-down that also claimed the second seasons of Moonhaven and 61st Street and the in-development series Invitation to a Bonfire. The write-down of around 400 million pertains to “a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation on the company’s linear or digital platforms,” AMC Networks said in an SEC filing. AMC ordered Demascus in February 2022, with the show joining Invitation to a Bonfire in the network’s “scripts-to-series” model. “[Demascus] is a character-driven exploration of life...

AMC has cancelled another show as it was being produced. Last month, it was revealed that the second season renewal of Moonhaven had been rescinded. Yesterday, we reported that the cable network had pulled the plug on Invitation to a Bonfire midway through its filming and had cancelled plans to air the second season of 61st Street. Now, comes word that Demascus has been axed as well.
A comedic sci-fi series, the Demascus TV show stars Okieriete Onaodowan, Janet Hubert, Caleb Eberhardt, and Shakira Ja'nai Paye, with Martin Lawrence and Sasha Hutchings in recurring roles. The series has been described as a character-driven exploration of life as an ordinary Black man in America today. The series revolves around Demascus (Onaodowan), a 33-year-old Black man who goes on a journey of self-discovery. He does this using innovative new...

AMC has opted not to move forward with the series “Demascus,” Variety has confirmed.
The show was ordered to series at the cabler back in February 2022 and had completed production but will no longer air on AMC. The news comes after Variety exclusively reported that AMC was also not proceeding with Season 2 of the legal drama “61st Street” or with its planned series adaptation of the novel “Invitation to a Bonfire.”
The decisions were made as part of cost cutting measures announced by AMC in December 2022, in which the company stated it would take write-downs for up to 475 million. That figure included 400 million for “strategic programming assessments” and 75 million for “organizational restructuring costs,” per an SEC filing. Just prior to that announcement, AMC Networks CEO Christina Spade abruptly departed the company after less than three months in the role. James L. Dolan was then named interim executive chairman by the board of directors shortly thereafter.
