There’s nothing like the first time. Your first published novel. Your first Prom. First telekinetic murder spree. Whatever. In the case of the 1974 novel, Carrie, it was Stephen King’s first time having a book published. It would also be the first piece of his work to ever grace the silver screen. Carrie would be released in 1976 on its way to becoming an all-time horror classic. In the film, Sissy Spacek plays an extremely shy and sheltered High School girl who is bullied relentlessly at home and school. At home, her mother is a complete and total nutbar salad who has weaponized her religious beliefs against her daughter. She locks her in the closet with this little coked-out Jesus statue and has for all intents and purposes ruined her chance at a normal life. One day at school, Carrie gets her period for the first time while in the community showers.

Paramount Streaming and Showtime head of communications Erin Calhoun is leaving the company after seven years.
Calhoun will depart at the end of September, she wrote in a memo to staff on Thursday (read it below, along with a note from Paramount Streaming president and CEO Tom Ryan).
“What truly has made this journey remarkable is this team and the people I have had the privilege to work with — the talented individuals who have not just been colleagues, but friends,” Calhoun writes. “I leave here with cherished memories that will stay with me forever.”
Calhoun’s exit follows that of Paramount+ and Paramount+ With Showtime chief marketing officer Michael Engleman in August. As was the case with Engleman’s exit, Calhoun is leaving Paramount as the company looks for ways to streamline its operations, including in communications, ahead of its merger with Skydance. Paramount Streaming, Showtime and cross-company publicity executive vice president Erin Calhoun is exiting the media giant at the end of the month after seven years with the company.
During her tenure, Calhoun oversaw communications teams across Paramount+, Pluto TV and Showtime, as well as campaigns for originals like “Fellow Travelers,” “The Curse,” “Frasier,” “Knuckles” and “Special Ops: Lioness.” She also helped elevate Showtime series such as “Shameless,” “Billions,” “Yellowjackets “and “Dexter: New Blood.”
Additionally, Calhoun led media relations for product and brand priorities, such as Pluto TV’s 10th anniversary — executing more than 250 industry events and spearheading nearly 100 awards nominations each year — and managed corporate communications efforts for this year’s Super Bowl.

One of Paramount Global’s top communications executives, Erin Calhoun, is stepping down from her role as EVP, Head of Communications, Paramount Streaming & Showtime and Cross-Company Publicity after seven years at the company. Her departure comes as Paramount is bracing for the next wave of layoffs, which I hear is expected next Tuesday, Sept. 24, with marketing and streaming/Paramount+ believed to be among the areas seriously impacted. There also will be further streamlining of the company’s communications operations, which Calhoun’s departure is a precursor to.
Paramount Global’s staff cuts, aiming to reduce its U.S.-based workforce by 15%, started in August, with 90% of the total layoffs to be completed by the end of September.
Calhoun, who was EVP Communications at Showtime Networks & Paramount Television Studios before being named to her current role in January 2023, announced her departure in a note to her team. (You can read it below.

Erin Calhoun, after seven years with Paramount Global where she led communications for Showtime and Paramount’s streaming division, is leaving the company at the end of September.
Calhoun’s departure comes amid broad cutbacks at Paramount, as the company looks to streamline roles across multiple departments. The company has announced it will lay off 15% of its U.S. workforce, eliminating about 2,000 jobs, ahead of its merger with Skydance Media.
Her exit was announced internally by Tom Ryan, president and CEO of Paramount Streaming, and Calhoun shared her own farewell note to staffers Thursday.

A laughing moment of embarrassment is a tough one to pull off, mainly because there is a psychological component to watching TV.
Yes, there is more than just a serial relationship with your favorite programs. There is vicarious embarrassment or second-hand embarrassment — call it what you will, but it definitely exists.
You know you’re experiencing it when you just want to bury your face in your hands or walk out of the room as some mortifying scene or another plays out on screen, even when you’re laughing.
(NBCUniversal/Peacock Screenshot)
The reason you’re embarrassed? Because the scene is intrinsic to you in some form or fashion. What embarrasses you about a moment in time on the small screen might not feel the same way to other observers.

The second Emmys of 2024 is sure to set records. With multiple first-time nominees, groundbreaking recognition for Indigenous performers and an actual good mix of shows, the nominations cast a wide net. Below, Variety breaks down the contenders in most of the main categories.
Drama Series
The drama category is one of the most peculiar in this year’s Emmy competition. “The Crown” is the only series nominated last year, while the rest are either new shows or shows finally getting their due. In fact, “The Crown” — which took home this trophy in 2021 — was probably the front-runner until FX decided freshman hit “Shōgun” would not be a limited series. Other newcomers this year: Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Fallout,” plus Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” for their freshman seasons; these choices demonstrate that the TV Academy isn’t focusing on one type of drama. In the age of streaming abundance, let there be no confusion — Netflix is still the undisputed king of the streaming game. The service has almost 280 million global subscribers, comfortably outpacing its closest competition, Prime Video, which has around 200 million subscribers, and remaining vastly ahead of its other competitors. This means that, for better or worse, Netflix has become the de facto winner of the streaming wars, and somewhat of a tastemaker in its own right. At the very least, it's the closest we'll get to the kind of monoculture we had back in the 90s when everyone was watching the same stuff. If a show or movie hits Netflix and manages to gain any traction, you can bet most people will be talking about it.
This has made things incredibly difficult for other companies trying to get a piece of the streaming action. So far, pretty much everyone else who's...

Anna Sawai has barely had enough time to digest receiving her first career Emmy nomination for her leading role of Lady Mariko in FX’s “Shōgun,” which earned a whopping 25 nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. In an exclusive chat with Gold Derby recorded just hours after the nominations announcement (watch the video above), Sawai admits to feeling a bit overwhelmed. “It feels like it just got announced 15 minutes ago and I’m still processing it.”
It’s been a banner year for Sawai, who headlined not one, but two acclaimed shows: “Shōgun” and “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which will return for a second season on Apple TV+. In addition to the Emmy nomination, Sawai has also earned four Gold Derby TV Awards nominations and just recently won the TCA award for Individual Achievement in Drama.

It’s the day after the Emmy nominations, and a few things are clear in the light of Thursday – namely, lots of deja-vu and lots of concentrating the wealth in precious few places. As is often the case with the TV academy, when they like you they really like you, and when they don’t like you, they completely ignore you. It’s good for your show to be on Netflix, FX, HBO, Apple and Hulu, less good on Paramount+ and Showtime. So much original content, so little time.

And we’re back.
Just six months after Fox aired the strike-delayed, wildly anticlimactic, 75th Emmy awards, ABC is prepping for the 76th.
Earlier today, the TV Academy revealed the 2024 Emmy nominees, who will convene on Sept. 15 at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. The telecast, which will air live on both coasts, will celebrate programming and performances that aired between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024. We’ll have plenty of time to debate who should win, who will win (and who definitely will not) as the new crop of nominees returns to the campaign trail.
In the meantime, let’s break down what just happened: the snubs, the surprises and what it all means for the big show.
1. ABC has already revealed that Jesse Collins Entertainment will be returning as the Emmy night producer for the second consecutive year, but it has yet to name a host. The last three...

“Shōgun,” FX’s buzzy samurai drama of feudal Japan created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, led all Emmys craft categories July 17 with 16 nominations. Next came “Fallout” (Prime Video), “True Detective: Night Country” (HBO), and “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu) with 13 noms each.
After that it was spread out among “The Crown” (Netflix) and “The Bear” (FX) with nine; “Palm Royale” (Apple TV+), “Hacks” (Max), “Fargo” (FX), and “Ripley” (Netflix) with eight; “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (Prime Video) and “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” (FX) with six; “What We Do in the Shadows” (FX), “3 Body Problem” (Netflix), “Ahsoka” (Disney+/Lucasfilm), and “Lessons in Chemistry” (Apple TV+) with five; “Baby Reindeer” (Netflix) and “The Morning Show” (Apple TV+) with four; and “The Gilded Age” (HBO), “Loki” (Disney+/Marvel), “Masters of the Air” (Apple TV+), “Slow Horses” (Apple TV+), and “Reservation Dogs” (FX) — in its third and final season — with three.

The 2024 Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday, July 17 and Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Ray Richmond were up early to discuss their reactions to surprises (or lack thereof), snubs and early front-runners. Leading the charge are “Shogun” in the drama categories, “The Bear” in comedy and “True Detective: Night Country” for limited series.
“It was a great morning for FX,” Davidson begins, noting “Shogun’s” 25 bids, followed by “The Bear” with 23, the most ever for a comedy series. Other big contenders this year are “Only Murders in the Building” with 21 nominations and “The Crown” with 18 — up from just six last year. “I really loved the final season season, especially the series finale. It was fantastic,” Dixon comments.

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today. While it was a mostly predictable affair, the announcement still sprinkled in a few welcome surprises among the expected contenders. The FX/Hulu contingent had a remarkable showing with two series dominating the proceedings. The feudal Japan-set drama "Shōgun" fared better than any other series with 25 nominations, and acclaimed dramedy "The Bear" set a new record for a comedy series with 23 nods.
Netflix ended up with the most nominations of any studio with 107. Leading their roster was surprise hit "Baby Reindeer," which received 11 nominations, including acting nods for creator Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill.
Several breakthroughs and firsts were celebrated, including Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Kali Reis (“True Detective”) becoming the first indigenous women to receive acting nominations. In its final season, FX’s “Reservation Dogs” scored its first Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Series. The show's star D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai also earned his first acting nod as did Selena Gomez for "Only Murders in the Building."
Other interesting stories coming out of the nomination announcement include the late Treat Williams receiving a posthumous nomination for "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" and a surprise nod for Idris Elba as lead actor in a drama for “Hijack.” Elba edged out contenders like Cosmo Jarvis in “Shogun,” Colin Farrell in “Sugar,” and Nathan Fielder in “The Curse.”
The 76th Primetime Emmys airs September 15th on ABC, just eight months after the previous ceremony which was delayed due to the writers' and actors' strikes.

It’s been a “Bear” of a morning. As was widely expected, FX’s “The Bear” set a nominations record for a comedy series Wednesday morning by scoring 23 bids to break the record of 22 set by “30 Rock” in 2009. The 23 was 13 more than the series scored in 2023 – when it wound up winning 10 at the strike-delayed Emmys earlier this year, including Best Comedy Series, the most by any series in its first season. Now that it came close to doubling its nomination total in Season 2, the question is whether it has a realistic chance of tying or breaking the wins record for any series in a single season. That number is 12, achieved by “Game of Thrones” in three different seasons.
In drama, “Shogun” also more than met expectations for the stylish and powerful reboot with 25 nominations, missing by only two the first-year record for a drama series of 27 set by “NYPD...

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards that were revealed on Wednesday morning confirm that there is tremendous support from the TV Academy’s 22,000 members for the three shows that have long been presumed to be the frontrunners in their respective categories: FX’s drama series Shogun (which landed a field-leading 25 noms), FX’s comedy series The Bear (the runner-up with 23 noms, a new record for a comedy, or at least a show that could get away with being classified as one) and Netflix’s limited series Baby Reindeer (11 noms).
But — and this is a big but — the noms also suggest that pundits, including me, may have been overestimating the strength of that trio of shows and underestimating the strength of some of their competitors.
Among dramas, Netflix’s The Crown, for its sixth, final and worst-reviewed season (it’s at just 55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), was the runner-up with a formidable 18 noms,...

Some things about the Emmys are predictable. Every awards observer figured that FX’s Shōgun and The Bear would get lots of nominations today, and they did: 25 and 23, respectively, the latter a record for the comedy categories in the case of The Bear.

As with any massive awards announcement, some nominees are celebrating this morning, and some who decidedly are not. Despite what was once considered a generally weak year in several categories, the 2024 Emmy Awards were full of deserving talent who were unfortunately not recognized for their efforts. The biggest omission was for “The Curse” across multiple categories. But not everyone can get into the party, right? Keeping all that in mind, here are some of the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2024 Emmy Awards nominations.

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.

It speaks somewhat to the predictability of the Emmys that one of the biggest surprises in this year’s nominations was the fact that a series that set a new record for comedy nominations in a single year (“The Bear”) wasn’t even more dominant than it was – landing a mere 10 acting bids spread through the lead, supporting and guest comedy categories and missing out on that record of 14 for “Succession.” But beyond that, there were some mild surprises and a few somewhat less mild ones, including the semi-dominant performance of the first-year drama “Fallout” and “Reservation Dogs” finally scoring its first comedy series nom in its third and final season.

Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph continued getting good news this year, thanks to the 2024 Emmys.
After winning Oscars earlier this year, Downey and Randolph both received 2024 Emmys nominations Wednesday. Downey was nominated for best supporting actor in a limited series for HBO’s The Sympathizer, in which he plays multiple characters, while Randolph was nominated for best supporting guest actress in a comedy series for her role as Detective Dee Williams on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.
Additionally, Lily Gladstone, who was nominated for the Oscar for best actress for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, was nominated for best supporting actress in a limited series for playing Cam Bentland in Hulu’s Under the Bridge. Emma Stone was seen as a contender for best actress in a drama series for her part as Whitney Siegel in Showtime’s The Curse but was not nominated.

As this morning’s Emmy nominations prove, there may be less TV being made nowadays, but the quality certainly hasn’t declined with the quantity.
As widely expected, The Bear, Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Shōgun were mentioned more than once by past Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale on Wednesday morning. As Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “it was an exceptional year in television.” It certainly seemed exceptional that, for the first time in a long while, the names Succession and Ted Lasso were not heard when the nominations were read, as those multiple winners have wrapped up their runs.

Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s remarkable awards run in 2024 continued with this morning’s Emmy nominations, where both performers earned nods. Randolph is nominated for guest actress in a comedy series thanks to her performance on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” while Downey landed a nomination for supporting actor in a limited series for HBO’s “The Sympathizer.” Variety’s senior awards editor Clayton Davis currently lists Downey as the frontrunner to win the Emmy in his category.
The Emmy nominations for Randolph and Downey this year are notable as both actors took home Oscars in March, thus setting them up for a history-making moment of winning an Oscar and an Emmy in the same calendar year. Randolph was awarded the Oscar for best supporting actress thanks to “The Holdovers,” while Downey took home the supporting actor prize for “Oppenheimer.”

Both Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph landed Emmy nominations this morning, hot on the heels of their Oscar wins for Oppenheimer and The Holdovers. While Poor Things Oscar winner Emma Stone was also expected to be nominated this morning for her turn on Showtime’s The Curse, she wound up being snubbed.
Coming off his first Oscar win for his turn in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic, Downey was recognized today for his multiple-character performance in HBO’s The Sympathizer. Receiving his first Primetime Emmy nomination all the way back in 2001, for a supporting turn on Ally McBeal, he’s also the winner of a Daytime Emmy, having been recognized as the exec producer of Outstanding Lifestyle Program Downey’s Dream Cars earlier this year. Downey’s competitors in Movie/Limited Supporting Actor include Jonathan Bailey (Fellow Travelers), Tom Goodman-Hill (Baby Reindeer), John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country...

The 2024 Best Drama Writing Emmy category is the second time in four years that none of the nominees from the prior year are eligible, giving us a whole new slate of programs competing for six slots (out of 134 total submissions on the ballot). All of last year’s nominated shows — “Better Call Saul” (“Point and Shoot” by Gordon Smith and “Saul Gone” by Peter Gould), “Bad Sisters”, “Andor” (“One Way Out” by Beau Willimon), “The Last of Us”, “The White Lotus” (“Arrivederci” by Mike White), and the winner “Succession” (“Connor’s Wedding” by Jesse Armstrong) — are not on this year’s Emmy ballot, as they either concluded or didn’t air any new episodes.
Despite the open category, the submissions reflected in most of our likely contenders played it strategically safe with one or two entries from most shows. The only exception is “Shōgun,” which went for half of its debut season,...

I’ve been covering the Emmy Awards since the early 1980s, which admitted makes me something of a fossil. It’s a little bit like hearing my grandparents talking about paying a nickel to go to the movies in the early 1900s. Yes, when I started covering the Emmys, there were just ABC, NBC and CBS and a (very) little PBS. There wasn’t even a Fox yet. If you were on HBO, Showtime or TNT, you were out of luck. You had to compete for something called the CableACE Awards, which stood for “Cable Awards for Cable Excellence Awards.” Not too redundant, huh? HBO was winning everything at the CableACEs every year, so there had ceased to be a point to their ongoing existence.
