It feels like it has been too long since Syfy has uncorked some new man-eating monster movies for us to sink our teeth into. That'll change come June when the network unleashes a pair of toothy monstrosities: Ice Road Terror and Swamp Shark. Syfy has posted a trio of bloody scenes from each monster mash.
The carnage begins on June 11th at 9/8 Central when Ice Road Terror reaches its destination on your television dial. Dylan Neal ("Dawson's Creek", "Blood Ties") and Brea Grant (Halloween II, "Heroes") star in this creature feature about Alaskan ice road truckers and a research analyst tangling with an unearthed prehistoric monster. The director (Terry Ingram) and writer (Keith Shaw) of Syfy's Phantom Racer reteam for this creature feature inspired by the popular reality series "Ice Road Truckers". Curiously, though, one thing you will not actually see in these clips is any actual ice road trucking.

Those "Ice Road Truckers" you watch on the History Channel are used to contending with driving over frozen lakes and roads and other dangerous subzero conditions near the Arctic Circle. Syfy's Ice Road Terror introduces a road hazard those brave truckers aren't used to dealing with: an unfrozen prehistoric monster.
Ice Road Terror stars Brea Grant ("Heroes"), Ty Olsson ("Battlestar Galactica"), Dylan Neal ("Dawson's Creek"), and Malcolm Stewart ("Kyle Xy"). Terry Ingram, a filmmaker no stranger to making TV movies about unholy terrors having previously helmed Phantom Racer, Odysseus: Voyage to the Underworld, and Paparazzi Princess: The Paris Hilton Story, directs from a script by Keith Shaw (Malibu Shark Attack, Phantom Racer).
Here's the plot synopsis provided by sales distributor Content Film:

Gloucester - The night Sebastian Junger arrived in town, it was a rather mild and cloudless day. There would be need to use the phrase “The Perfect Storm” to hype the writer’s talk and signing at Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Books. It was The Perfect Mild.
This appears to be a rarity in today’s journalism. Anything that happens now gets blamed on “A Perfect Storm” of calamities after Junger’s book about the doomed fishermen. Wall Street meltdown, Bp well disaster and McRib are all given The Perfect Storm treatment. Sadly enough, he does not get a nickel every time it’s said on TV.
This appearance didn’t include tales of the people who put seafood on your table or George Clooney’s pranks. Junger spoke of the men who fight for America in Afghanistan. The Second Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment of the...

Phantom Racer was a SyFy original that was released on the channel in November. If you missed the premiere, February 16th is your second chance to watch demon car trunks chew people in two. Sometimes people just cannot let go of a grudge. In the case of Phantom Racer Nascar driver McCullough will not let got of the stick-shift, or the the steering wheel, as he torments track rival Jj Sawyer (Greg Evigan), from the afterlife. The film has been described at Dreadcentral as "decent acting and the campy car kills are the only things keeping Phantom Racer from completely crashing and burning" (Dread). That sounds like two thumbs up from this side of the keyboard, but SyFy originals are known for their campiness and reliance on the viewer's suspension of reality, or good taste. Have a look at the trailer that shows one deadly encounter between an unknown character...

Established 1974! Our news column wonders who the remake rabies will infect next.
Sci-fi TV
Once again, there are seven new genre entries this weekend. First, tonight offers a new Eureka (“Shower the People,” Syfy, 9 p.m.), which involves mysterious, enigmatic even strange drownings. Friday night also includes three repeats: Smallville (“Eternal,” the CW, 8 p.m.), Ghost Whisperer (“Leap of Faith,” CBS, 8 p.m.) and Medium (“The Devil Inside” Part II, CBS, 9 p.m.). ABC’s The Goode Family may have ended its run or there might be two or so unaired episodes yet to come. But Not tonight!
As for Saturday, 9 p.m., Syfy boasts the premiere of another of its teleflicks (Phantom Racer starring Tekwar’s Greg Evigan) while simultaneously BBC America unveils the (we think) fifth first-run Being Human. Unless we’ve lost count, the sixth (and final) first season Human should air next weekend.

The Sci-Fi Channel's name change to Syfy makes me think of a scene from the classic miniseries "Roots". The evil white man wanted to change Kunta Kinte's name to Toby. They whipped him until he said it. Afterwards, a fellow African told him they can call him whatever they want; he knows his true name is Kunta Kinte. Bonnie Hammer can use that bullwhip on me all she wants; I know that Syfy will always be Sci-Fi, and not just because the words are pronounced exactly the same.
