Apart from trying to avoid back-to-back Stephen King, trust me, he will be coming back this year as its kind of inevitable, I also like looking at modern horror adaptations. This is two-fold as the internet has done the 80s and 90s to death but also because there are some genuinely original and fantastic IPs that have yet to get the spotlight they deserve. The most recent example of this is The Ruins which is a horror one hit wonder from Scott Smith, yeah, he did other things but that was his only horror novel, and that’s a cool and original piece. The Ritual wasn’t one of those immediate releases where the book was churned into a movie before the book had time to cook and it is the only adaptation from a very U.K author’s works. While the movie did extremely well on Netflix and...

Tucked deep down in a holler in rural Virginia, along a dirt road just off Route 221, and cradled by tall bull pines amid the Blue Ridge foothills, the annual FloydFest roared to life.
And it sounded a whole lot like Maggie Rose.
On Saturday, Rose soared through a sunny late-afternoon set that veered wildly and joyously from mood-lifting R&b melodies to soul-stirring rock ballads off her latest album, No One Gets Out Alive, delivering each with a confident, commanding stage presence.

Nashville was once famously called a ‘ten year town,’ because that’s about how long an artist has to make it there. Maggie Rose has been at it longer than that. Along the way, she struggled to break through in mainstream country music by submitting herself to the machine: playing CMA Fest in the midday summer sun, visiting countless radio stations, and releasing country singles that went nowhere.
Finally, she had enough. In 2018, with her aptly titled LP Change the Whole Thing, Rose threw up her hands and began making...

The encounter in the girls locker room initiates the nightmare scenario of It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta’s jagged feature debut about a small town besieged by an ancient spirit.
Samidha (Megan Suri) and Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) stand across from each other in the dimly lit aisle, exchanging weighted stares. Culture and a shared history bind the two teenagers, whose reputations differ at their small, white suburban high school. Samidha goes by Sam now — an attempt to close the gap between her Indian culture and the American one embodied by her classmates. She would prefer to loiter around a campfire with her crush (Gage Marsh) than help her mother (Neeru Bajwa) prepare for puja.
Tamira is a more shadowy figure; her character seems mostly to be Sam’s opposite. The young woman, dressed in drab and ill-fitting clothes, sticks out. She inspires stares, whispers and jokes. When she shuffles through the hall,...

‘Raging Grace’ FrightFest Review – Gothic Horror Mines Suspense and Terror from Immigrant Experience
Writer/Director Paris Zarcilla’s feature debut, Raging Grace joins films like His House and No One Gets Out Alive in examining the horrors of immigration from within the walls of a haunted house. Instead of ghosts from the past or creatures, though, Zarcilla spins a taut tale of gothic horror combined with personal drama that sets it apart. The focus on its characters means a slower-coiling horror story, but one that surprises with unexpected detours.
Joy (Max Eigenmann) lives in London as an undocumented Filipina immigrant. Housecleaning is the only work she can successfully find as a single mom to feisty young daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla). To save up enough money to obtain a Visa, Joy sets her sights on affluent clients. It leads her to the sprawling estate of Mr. Garrett (David Hayman), an older man slowly succumbing to cancer. Stephen Murphy shot six of the 10 episodes in season 3 of "Atlanta." The cinematographer is behind "Cancer Attack," "New Jazz," "The Old Man and the Tree, "Sinterklaas Is Coming to Town," "White Fashion," and the recent season finale, "Tarrare." Previously, Murphy worked on Amazon's "Hanna," "No One Gets Out Alive," and "Death and the Nightingales." Now, with "Atlanta," he's got a job on his resume that'll be hard to equal.

“Free Guy” (Disney/$19.99) is now on Premium VOD after a 45-day window, “The Addams Family 2” (United Artists/$19.99) is new at theaters and on PVOD, and even though it will be weeks before box-office champion “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (Sony) makes its PVOD debut, it’s already making itself known on the charts.
