“Maria” auteur Pablo Larraín brought the closer of his trilogy to the 62nd annual New York Film Festival on Sunday, September 29. Set during the last days of opera icon Maria Callas’ life, the film follows Angelina Jolie transforming into the role of a lifetime, singing through grief, tragedy, and despair.
“I honestly have been seeking the story for many, many years,” Larraín told IndieWire. “Unlike the other two movies, ‘Jackie’ and ‘Spencer,’ this is the story of an artist. It’s a story of a woman that ended up being very shaped by the opera that she sang on stage.”
“I always wanted to make a movie about opera,” he continued. “It’s not easy. It’s unusual for cinema, but those are two of my greatest loves in my heart, opera and cinema. I’m very happy to be able to put them together in a movie, about a...

They say that in life there are three guarantees: death, taxes, and that if there is a complicated woman in need of a stylishly done, painstakingly constructed biopic, then Pablo Larraín is the man to make it. Having sensitively explored the grief of Jackie Kennedy in the wake of JFK's death with 2017's Natalie Portman starrer Jackie, and then made a haunting portrait of Princess Diana's vulnerability with Kristen Stewart in 2021's Spencer, Larraín has enlisted the services of Angelina Jolie to help tell the story of fêted opera singer Maria Callas in the aptly titled Maria. Check out the first teaser for the film below:
"Maria, what do you want to sing?" asks a pianist as Jolie's Maria looks out on a grand, empty music hall. From there, we get shots of Callas – in black and white, on vintage film, in a plethora of gorgeous outfits...

Writer Steven Knight has revealed he thought “Game of Thrones” was a kids show until he cast one of its actors in his own series.
Knight, who’s perhaps best known for creating Cillian Murphy-starrer “Peaky Blinders,” was speaking at the Royal Television Society conference in London, in conversation with BBC journalist Katie Razzall when he made the admission.
He recalled how his young son was obsessed with “Game of Thrones,” asking for a DVD boxset for Christmas, which Knight was happy to provide having seen it featured dragons. It was only when he came to cast “Game of Thrones” alum Aidan Gillen in “Peaky Blinders” he realized the George R. R. Martin-created series had more adult themes.
When someone suggested Gillen for “Peaky,” they told Knight that he plays the brothel keeper in “Game of Thrones.” Knight responded in shock: “What are you talking about? It’s a kid’s show!

Angelina Jolie received a thunderous, eight-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival following the world premiere of Pablo Larraín’s “Maria.” The reception moved the Oscar-winning actress to tears and left her contemplating the legacy of Maria Callas, the opera diva she brings so thrillingly to life on screen.
“I thought about her a lot in that moment,” Jolie said during an interview at the Telluride Film Festival, where “Maria” screened last week. “It’s strange when you feel so close to this real human being. I know that applause was for her life. Often, we don’t, as artists, know if our work resonates, or we don’t expect kindness. You walk out expecting not to be supported or not to connect. But ‘Maria’ did.”

As I sat through the North American premiere of Pablo Larraín’s biopic of Maria Callas at the Telluride Film Festival, which stars Angelina Jolie as the famed opera singer, I couldn’t help but recall a line from Al Pacino in “The Godfather Part III” (1990): “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
It’s been an awfully long time since Jolie was contending for a statuette — her last acting nomination was for 2008’s “Changeling” and she’s spent the time since then starring in popcorn movies like “Salt” and “Maleficent” or directing films like “Unbroken.” But if you needed a reminder of what a formidable acting talent Jolie is, it’s on display in her transformative portrayal of one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. It’s a chameleonic turn that can best be described as a a kind of cinematic possession.

At the Academy Awards ceremony held earlier this year, Emma Stone was awarded her second best actress Oscar, a mere seven years after winning her first. You might think that winning multiple acting Oscars would be an extreme rarity, but you would be wrong. Stone became the 45th performer ever conferred more than one.
Why do I bring this up? Because if anyone thinks that Angelina Jolie cannot win the best actress Oscar at the next Academy Awards ceremony because she already won once before — in a different category, mind you, best supporting actress, for Girl, Interrupted, which came out exactly 25 years ago — then I’ve got news for you: think again.
Jolie has certainly made a strong case for herself with a daring, tour de force performance as the legendary but troubled opera singer Maria Callas in Maria, the final installment of Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín’s unofficial trilogy...

Nicole Kidman Heats Up Venice with ‘Babygirl’ and Kinky Sex Onscreen — Festival Day Three Highlights
If only it were just the stars bringing heat to the Venice Film Festival.
This year’s Biennale on the Lido continues to be one of the hottest on record — incoming attendees, if you don’t have one of those Uv-fighting umbrellas, brace yourself. How Nicole Kidman, water-taxiing into the Lido for the world premiere of the psychosexual thriller “Babygirl,” arrived at Friday’s press conference in a black dress without an ounce of sweat is anyone’s guess. The room was hot, but then it got hotter. The Oscar-winning star showed up with the cast and crew, including co-stars Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, and Sophie Wilde, and writer/director Halina Reijn, for a presser heavy on questions on Kidman’s nudity in the film. As she explained to the press corps, she doesn’t get caught up in the “minutiae” of showing sexuality onscreen. Kidman’s turn in “Babygirl...

Angelina Jolie’s recent gesture at the Venice Film Festival, where she met a fan with Als, sparked mixed reactions online. While Jolie’s actions were intended as a compassionate gesture, some critics accused her of staging the moment for publicity.
The encounter, where Jolie knelt down in a champagne-hued gown to speak with the bed-ridden fan, was intended to showcase her support and empathy. However, several netizens questioned the authenticity of the moment, suggesting it might have been orchestrated for the cameras. Some felt it would have been more genuine if Jolie had visited the fan privately, without media attention.
However, it did not go down well with several netizens, who went on the comment section and said that it was all “for the cameras.”
A user said: “I feel this is inappropriate.”
“She thinks she is Mother Teresa,” said another.
One questioned: “Did she stage this ? or is it real?...

At the Venice Film Festival press conference for “Maria,” filmmaker Pablo Larraín’s latest portrait of an iconic woman of the 20th century, one journalist was bold enough to ask whether or not Angelina Jolie had the Oscars in mind upon taking the role Ever the diplomat, the Academy Award winner pulled the focus back to Maria Callas, the supreme opera diva she portrays in the film. “In my own business if there’s a response to the work, I’m very grateful, but in my heart to disappoint the people who love her and who she means a lot to, and her legacy, I came to care for her,” she said. “I didn’t want to do a disservice to this woman.”

“Angelina! Angelina! Angelina!”
The Venice Film Festival loves its movie stars, and Angelina Jolie was the toast of Italy on Thursday night. The actress wept during an eight-minute standing ovation at the Sala Grande Theatre at the world premiere of “Maria,” Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama about the Greek opera singer Maria Callas.
The outpouring of love and emotion brings to mind another standing ovation in Venice that launched the Oscar campaign for Brendan Fraser in “The Whale,” as he sobbed through the applause that cemented a career comeback in 2022.
Jolie was similarly taken by the rapturous response, wiping away tears and at time turning her face away from the cheering as she was overcome by emotion. She hugged Larraín and the cast of the film, which is sure to be an Oscar contender, putting Jolie in the best actress race for the first time in 15 years.
Netflix will release “Maria” later this year.

Songs from the Specious Floor: Larrain Imagines the Last Days of a Diva
A penny for the thoughts of Maria Callas regarding Pablo Larraín’s glossy recuperation of her last week of life in Maria, the third in a series of high profile biopics of iconic women following 2016’s Jackie and 2021’s Spencer. Scripted by Steven Knight and lensed by Ed Lachman, the end result is a beautiful photo shoot for Angelina Jolie as a superficial approximation of the notoriously difficult diva, long considered by many to be the best opera singer whoever lived. Set during the last week of her life, it’s an elegiac reflection of a life told in various flashbacks as Callas slips into a sort of madness whilst suffering from impending heart and liver failure.…...

Over almost two decades, Chilean director Pablo Larraín has been making Spanish-language films that have ranged from creepy tales to political stories to character studies to, well, creepy political character studies (“El Conde”). For the last eight of those years, though, Larraín has had a parallel career making a trio of English-language films that draw their one-word titles from the names of the famous women at their center: first 2016’s “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy in the days following the assassination of her husband, U.S. President John F. Kennedy; then 2021’s “Spencer,” with Kristen Stewart as Diana Spencer, the soon-to-be Princess of Wales, on a fraught weekend at the British royal family’s country home; and now “Maria,” with Angelina Jolie as opera diva Maria Callas.
Those three films make an unlikely triptych of adventurous, dark fantasias about iconic women under extreme pressure. But “Maria,” which was...

Angelina Jolie hit the Lido today, ahead of the world premiere of Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas biopic, Maria. Speaking with the Venice Film Festival press corps this afternoon, the star said that embodying the legendary opera singer gave her a “new relationship” to the term “diva.” The word “comes with a lot of negative connotations… I think (Callas) was one of hardest working people, who didn’t hurt anybody.”
Maria, a creative imagining and a psychological portrait of the eponymous legendary opera singer, takes place in the 1970s near the end of Callas’ life. It’s a story about a woman who lived from the ’20s to the ’70s, burning her voice and her life by doing what she loved.
This is the third portrait of a famous woman as seen through Larraín’s lens, following 2016’s Jackie and 2021’s Spencer, both of which also premiered in Venice.

“Maria,” the third in Pablo Larraín’s biopic trilogy after “Jackie” and “Spencer,” stars Angelina Jolie as Greek-American soprano Maria Callas, drifting in the last week of her life on a diet of downers and a stream of self-absorption. Callas died of a heart attack in 1977, three years out from her last singing appearance, though the film sees Jolie as Callas rehearsing for an imagined performance that will never come due to the state of her voice — and for a camera crew, dreamed up in a fog of pills, led by Kodi Smit-McPhee.
“Maria” frames Callas as a survivor through childhood and failed relationships and into her last days, though in the film’s present, she’s frightfully thin and eliciting worries from her Paris house staff (Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher). Both abet and confront her dependency on methaqualone and other pills and make for an upstairs-downstairs dynamic in the screenplay.

Pablo Larraín is clearly not afraid of doing biopics about powerful women. After earning acclaim on smaller international films, the filmmaker really broke out in a big, big way with 2016’s “Jackie.” From there, he went on to direct 2021’s “Spencer,” and he’s now prepping the release of “Maria.” These three films will end up making a trilogy of sorts.

Amid major movie market upheavals, Leone Film Group is still the main Italian distributor of top-notch English-language indie film fare, spanning all genres with titles from directors such as Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
But while in the past Leone Film Group relied on output deals with U.S. indies, such as Lionsgate and Spielberg’s Amblin, these days “we supply ourselves from whomever has worthy product,” says its head of acquisitions Francesco Polimanti. That includes titles such as recent hit “Civil War,” with Kirsten Dunst, “John Wick 4” with Keanu Reeves as the iconic assassin and the upcoming “Dumb Money.”
Polimanti went on a buying spree in May at Cannes, where he picked up a trio from Black Bear, including Guy Ritchie’s next film, “Wife and Dog,” set in the world of British aristocracy. It marks the fifth Ritchie-directed movie that will go out in Italy through Leone.

Two Netflix Originals and new movies from Mike Leigh, Joshua Oppenheimer, Gia Coppola and Edward Berger will vie for San Sebastian’s top Golden Shell this September.
The festival features a main competition that is stronger than usual on both bigger-name directors and ‘A’ list stars, such as Tilda Swinton in Oppenheimer’s “The End,” Jamie Lee Curtis and Pamela Anderson in Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” and the ensemble cast of Berger’s “Conclave” that includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini.
Bound for Toronto and Telluride before San Sebastián, Oppenheimer’s “The End” stars Swinton, George MacKay and Michael Shannon in what is described as a post-apocalyptic “Golden Age” musical.
“Conclave,” from “All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger,” is a psychological thriller written by Peter Straughan, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Robert Harris and starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow.
