Exclusive: Amber Ruffin (The Amber Ruffin Show) and Michael Ian Black (Wet Hot American Summer) are set for the team captain roles on Have I Got News For You, CNN’s forthcoming American adaptation of the long-running BBC comedy panel series.

A British institution produced by Hat Trick Productions since 1990, Have I Got News for You will be hosted in the States by The Daily Show alum Roy Wood Jr., as we were first to report. The series will deliver comic observations, from the satirical to the surreal, through the lens of a news quiz show, serving up a smart and edgy take on the news of the week.

Together with Wood, Ruffin and Black will guide a rotating collection of guests including notable entertainers, political figures and comedians through an array of comic games and quick-witted panel conversations that test their knowledge of current events.

With just a few hours of Pride Month remaining, Amber Ruffin is doing a victory lap.

The comedian came out as a member of the LGBTQ community Sunday on Instagram, sharing a selfie in a shirt printed with “Queer,” as well as photos with her partner at recent Pride events.

“In what will come as a shock to exactly zero people, I’m using the last day of Pride to come out!” Ruffin captioned the post. “Be proud of who you are, little babies! I know I am! And I can’t wait to be discriminated against for a new reason!!”

Two of the most celebrated shows in Emmy history are set to experience a weird awards season.

Saturday Night Live, which has won more Emmys than any other show in television history, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which has won in its category eight years in a row, could both face the indignity of not being officially nominated for an Emmy as a result of submission rules.

The number of submissions in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category is expected to be significantly lower than last year. In addition to SNL and Oliver’s HBO show, the only other shows understood to be submitting in this category are CBS’ Taylor Tomlinson-hosted After Midnight, HBO’s Painting with John and The Magic Prank Show with Justin Willman, which launched in April.

Per TV Academy rules, categories with fewer than 7 submissions will be “screened by the appropriate peer group...

Seth Meyers has renewed his deal with NBCUniversal, cementing him as the host of “Late Night” through 2028.

The extension comes months after the renowned writer and comedian hit his 10-year anniversary as host; “Late Night With Seth Meyers” first launched in February 2014.

Meyers’ production company, Sethmaker Shoemeyers, has also extended its deal with Universal Studio Group to produce content across NBCUniversal platforms. The banner previously produced “A.P. Bio” for NBC and “The Amber Ruffin Show” for Peacock.

“Over the last 10 years, Seth has resonated with his audience night after night with a sharp monologue and established segments such as ‘A Closer Look’ and ‘Day Drinking,’” said Katie Hockmeyer, executive vice president of late night programming at NBCUniversal Entertainment. “We’re so happy to continue this legacy franchise with Seth at the helm and watch him continue to elevate the success of ‘Late Night.’”

Growing up in Omaha, Amber Ruffin didn’t have many role models who looked like her. “I had not seen Black female performances that weren’t a stereotype and honestly, it was a while until it became regular.” Luckily, there were two movies on regular rotation in her home: “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “The Wiz.”

The first started Oscar-winner Whoopi Goldberg, in whose hyphenate shoes Ruffin would follow, becoming an actor, host, writer and comedian. And the latter was the big-screen adaptation of the revolutionary 1974 Broadway musical, a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” with an all-Black cast and bumping tunes that blended rock, gospel and soul. Says Ruffin of the films, “They were just so specific and weird that it was like an invitation to be yourself. So I had to squeeze all of the belonging out of those two movies and they lasted me well beyond childhood.”

Exclusive: Straight to Cards, the production company set up 18 months ago by Amber Ruffin and Jenny Hagel, has upped Justin McGriff.

McGriff, who was a creative executive at the company, which has an overall deal with Universal Television, has been promoted to Vice President.

It comes after Ruffin set up her latest scripted project at Peacock. The Late Night with Seth Meyers writer is developing an adaptation of You’ll Never Believe What Happened To Lacey, the book she wrote with her sister Lacey Lamar, for the streamer.

McGriff is a producer and executive with roots in late-night comedy. To say it’s been a strange, turbulent year might be a bit of an understatement. Historically, 2023 marks the year of the dual strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the first time in over 60 years that Hollywood writers and actors went on strike at the same time. Of course, it’s in the most turbulent times where horror thrives most; audiences turn to horror for catharsis or release from real world anxieties and fears.

It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.

All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.

The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.

Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.

After scaring up $18 million in theaters earlier this year, horror-comedy The Blackening is getting a sequel from Lionsgate, Variety has exclusively announced this afternoon.

Variety notes, “producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate have entered into talks with Dewayne Perkins, Tracy Oliver and producer E. Brian Dobbins to develop a follow-up film.”

The first film was made on a production budget of just $5 million, so there’s needless to say lots of potential for this to become a profitable Scary Movie-type horror franchise.

The new revival of The Wiz will begin Broadway previews on March 29, 2024, at the Marquis Theatre, with an opening night set for Wednesday, April 17.

The musical will feature Wayne Brady in the title role. The Broadway dates and venue were announced today by producers Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, Brian Anthony Moreland, Ambassador Theatre Group, Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker.

The limited engagement on Broadway follows a pre-Broadway national tour that launched in Baltimore yesterday with a sold-out show (and five standing ovations). Baltimore was the site of the musical’s original world premiere nearly 50 years ago.

While Tamron Hall is the host of her successful, self-titled daytime talk show “Tamron Hall,” there was a hypothetical world in which she may have been part of the late-night TV landscape. But Hall told TheWrap she’s not convinced that idea would have gotten past network executives.

It’s something Hall thought about earlier on in her career, and one that was suggested to her prior to the launch of her now two-time Emmy-winning talk series.

“I have a former producer at MSNBC who always said, ‘You should be in late night, you should be in late night,'” Hall said. But she also mentioned that she didn’t think there would be as clear of a lane for her to pursue late night in comparison to other on-camera talents who come from a different background.

The comedian, who writes for Late Night with Seth Meyers and hosts The Amber Ruffin Show, has been developing an adaptation of You’ll Never Believe What Happened To Lacey, the book she wrote with her sister Lacey Lamar, for Peacock.

It comes after her last scripted project, her Non-Evil Twin pilot, did not move forward at NBC.

However, NBCUniversal remains keen to work with Ruffin, once the writers and actors strikes have ended. Ruffin and her writing partner Jenny Hagel signed an overall deal with Universal Television last year, through their new production company Straight To Cards.

It also comes as the future of her Peacock variety series The Amber Ruffin Show is unclear.

As Hollywood waits for movement between the WGA and AMPTP, a ray of sunlight emerged for comedy/variety writers in the latest back-and-forth.

Late-night writers, and writers who work on variety shows such as Netflix’s Tim Robinson series I Think You Should Leave, have been fighting for safeguards in streaming.

Back in February, in its Pattern of Demands, the WGA said that it wanted Mba minimums to apply to “comedy variety programs made for new media”.

This has now, seemingly, been settled, as both the WGA and AMPTP confirmed that comedy variety writers on streaming shows, which include Apple’s The Problem with Jon Stewart and Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show, will now be covered.

The AMPTP pointed out on Tuesday that for the first time ever, writers for high-budget subscription video-on-demand comedy variety programs will receive the same terms and conditions that apply under Appendix A, which...

Bipoc late-night and variety show writers say the lack of diversity on-screen and behind it is due to a lack of chances and opportunity given to people of color.

“If you look at traditionally… the hosts that we remember a lot, the ones from those 11:30 p.m. 12:30 a.m. shows, they got so many chances,” Greg Iwinski, who has written for Comedy Central’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” and CBS’ “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” said Thursday during TheWrap’s strike roundtable, “Bipoc Late-Night and Variety Writers Speak Out.”

HBO’s “Succession” was a critical darling, so it’s probably befitting that the show would end its run with two final lauds from the Television Critics Assn. The 39th Annual TCA Awards — which canceled its in-person event this year due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes — released its list of winners on Monday, with “Succession” grabbing the prizes for program of the year, as well as outstanding achievement in drama (an award it also won in 2022 and 2020).

Other major winners included FX’s “The Bear,” which airs on Hulu. The series’ first season was honored as outstanding new program, as well as outstanding achievement in comedy. The TCA spread the wealth when it comes to individual achievements, honoring “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn in drama, and “Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne in comedy.

Felipe Torres Medina, a writer on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, organized a comedy writers picket outside 30 Rock in New York that saw the cream of the late-night crop turn up to fight for a “fair” deal.

The Problem with Jon Stewart secured a nomination for Outstanding Talk Series alongside Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

This comes as Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was moved to the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category this year following seven consecutive wins for Outstanding Variety Talk Series. Oliver will compete against Saturday Night Live (and A Black Lady Sketch Show) in that category.

Last year, The Problem with Jon Stewart was nominated in the Hosted Nonfiction (Series or Special) category. However, it lost out to Searching For Italy with Stanley Tucci in that category.

After scaring up an estimated $7 million in theaters over Juneteenth weekend, director Tim Story‘s The Blackening is now headed home to Premium Video On Demand outlets this Friday, July 7, Bloody Disgusting has learned.

The Blackening, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game.

Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (“The Amber Ruffin Show,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?

The Television Critics Association awards nominations went public Friday, and it was great news for some series and sad news for others.

The Last of Us, The Bear, and Succession are in a three-way tie with five nominations apiece.

All three shows were expected to get some awards love, so their performances here are not surprising.

The Bear has been a bonafide hit for FX and Hulu, but there were some more first-year shows in the mix, too.

Andor, Jury Duty, Shrinking, Interview With the Vampire, and Poker Face were all well-represented.

Somewhat surprising: Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were shut out.

The news comes after both series have been big hits on the awards front and could set a precedent for upcoming awards shows.

Awards will be handed out at an in-person ceremony on August 7, 2023.

There won’t be a TCA Summer Tour this year, but the Television Critics Association is out with the nominees for its 39th annual TCA Awards. Wrapped HBO Emmy winner Succession, sophomore FX dramedy The Bear and HBO’s freshman drama The Last of Us lead the field with five noms each. See the full list below.

ABC’s Emmy-winning comedy Abbott Elementary and Peacock rookie Poker Face are next with four nominations apiece.

Among networks and platforms, the combined HBO/HBO Max doubled up its closest competition with 20 noms to FX’s 10. Streamers Disney+ and Peacock were next with nine each. PBS/PBS Kids got seven.

There are two new categories this year: Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming and Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Programming. Those nominations were dominated by PBS and/or streamers.

The final seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and (maybe-probably) Ted Lasso got the cold shoulder from the Television Critics Assoc., which honored the Emmy-winning pair with a total of zero TCA Award nominations.

By contrast, Succession‘s swan song scored a leading five nods, putting the Roy family in a three-way tie with fellow HBO drama The Last of Us and Hulu’s breakout hit The Bear.

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has named the winners of its 15th Dorian TV Awards with the final season of HBO’s Succession and ABC’s Abbott Elementary taking top drama and comedy honors, respectively. Succession star Sarah Snook also took the best drama performance trophy, while Max’s showbiz satire The Other Two was named Best LGBTQ TV Show.

Somebody Somewhere‘s Bridget Everett won best comedy lead, Jennifer Coolidge took best supporting drama performance for her fateful turn in The White Lotus, in addition to being named a Comedy TV Icon, and Ayo Edebiri of FX on Hulu’s hit sandwich shop comedy The Bear won Best Supporting TV Performance – Comedy. Ariana DeBose nabbed the Best TV Musical Performance trophy for her rap tribute to Angela Bassett and other nominees at the BAFTA Film Awards last March.

Other winners included Amazon Freevee’s prank show Jury Duty as Best Reality Show.

The 15th annual Dorian TV Awards have selected their winners with the HBO drama “Succession” taking home Best TV Drama, ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” nabbed the Best TV Comedy award and Max’s “The Other Two” won Best LGBTQ Show.

Announced Monday by Galeca: Society of Professional LGBTQ Entertainment Journalists, “Succession” star Sarah Snook won best drama performance, while Bridget Everett took home the best comedy performance award for her role on HBO’s comedy series “Somebody Somewhere” — which also won for best unsung show.

“The White Lotus” favorite Jennifer Coolidge snagged another win for her role on the HBO series in the supporting drama performance category, while “The Bear” breakout star Ayo Edebiri won for best supporting comedy performance.

In 2015, the TV academy made the decision to split the variety series Emmy category into two separate ones in order to better recognize achievements in the talk and scripted subgenres. This year, there are 19 shows vying for spots in the Best Talk Series lineup. The amount of 2022 hopefuls was also 19, which was down from 20 in 2021 and 24 in 2020. Four of the series listed below will reap bids this year, giving each entry pretty good odds.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their ballots for their favorite talk shows. Unlike at the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Lionsgate’s horror-comedy The Blackening was released into theaters for the long Juneteenth weekend, and Lionsgate is surely celebrating the film’s box office performance today.

Playing in 1,775 theaters across the country, The Blackening‘s 5-day total thus far is an estimated $7 million, which includes nearly $1 million from Thursday night previews.

The Blackening opened in sixth place at the crowded box office in its debut weekend, behind much larger studio blockbusters including The Flash, Elemental, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and The Little Mermaid. The good news for The Blackening is that the film’s production budget was just $5 million, which should allow for Lionsgate to start making box office profits real soon. The low budget horror-comedy was set up for success, whereas a mega budget film like DC’s The Flash was set up to fail.

HBO/Max’s The Last of Us and Somebody Somewhere are the among the nominees for the 2023 Dorian TV Awards, unveiled Wednesday by the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (Galeca).

The Last of Us leads the nominations with eight nods, while the Bridget Everett-led comedy earned six. HBO/Max garnered the most noms with 32; dramas The White Lotus and Succession, plus comedies Los Espookys and The Other Two, were a part of that total.

The Last of Us, Succession and The White Lotus were nominated for best TV drama alongside AMC’s Interview With the Vampire and Showtime’s Yellowjackets. Exclusive: The late-night community is over the moon after it emerged that there will be five Emmy nominations this year.

Emmy voting opened today, and Deadline understands that there are 19 submissions in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, far more than expected, which, given the math, means that there will be five nominations this year.

One late-night source told Deadline this was “unexpected” but a “positive” move, meaning that that the sector no longer has to lament the loss of another Emmy slot.

Given that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has been moved to the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category this year after seven consecutive wins for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, it is a boon for The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live!

It could also the door to shows such as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon...

The premium cable/streaming powerhouse’s “The Last of Us,” “Somebody Somewhere,” and “The White Lotus” were the top-3 nominees, followed closely by ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.”

“The Last of Us” received 8 nominations, including Best TV Drama, Best LGBTQ show, and Best TV Performance for both Pedro Pascal and co-star Bella Ramsey. The show also garnered double nominations in the Best Supporting TV performance category for Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman among its other nominations.

Meanwhile, “Somebody Somewhere” landed 6 nominations, including Best TV Performance for star Bridget Everett.

Unlike the character he wrote and plays in the horror spoof The Blackening, comedian Dewayne Perkins will not be staying at a cabin in the woods anytime soon. “I went camping once and it was one of those moments where I was like, ‘This is what this is? We’re really sleeping on the ground … outside?’ ” he says with a quizzical eyebrow during a video interview a few weeks before The Blackening opens in theaters June 16. “I never went back.”

However, as onscreen Dewayne (yes, he and his character share the same name, and they are both openly gay), he joins nine college besties at a cabin deep, deep in the woods over Juneteenth weekend. What was supposed to be a much-needed get-together among friends drinking highly sweetened drinks and indulging in trash-talking hijinks turns into them playing a bloody trivia game called The Blackening, which determines who’s Black enough and who isn’t.
