It has been 22 years since Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ first hit theaters, embedding itself as a beloved classic among both children and adults. The plan to transform the whimsical Hawaii-centric tale into a live-action/CG hybrid was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter back in October 2018. However, unforeseen events like the Covid-19 pandemic led to significant delays in production. Initially, Mike Van Waes penned the screenplay for the live-action film before Chris Kekaniokalani Bright rewrote the script, adding layers of depth and cultural authenticity. According to a Production Insider, Chris Kekaniokalani Bright significantly contributed to the script, adding depth...

Universal premiered the second trailer for “The Wild Robot” at the Annecy Animation Festival on June 11. Adapted from Peter Brown’s illustrated book and directed by Chris Sanders, the sci-fi adventure concerns a robot called Roz (Lupita Nyong’o), washed ashore on an uninhabited island, who must adapt and live among the animals, especially after adopting an orphaned gosling bird.
Also contributing voice performances are Pedro Pascal as Fink the fox, Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail the opossum, Bill Nighy as Longneck the goose, Kit Connor as Brightbill the gosling, and Stephanie Hsu as Vontra the robot, as well as Matt Berry, Ving Rhames, and Mark Hamill.
Fully animated at DreamWorks, “The Wild Robot” explores the relationship between technology and nature. For this, DreamWorks embraced an impressionistic 2D aesthetic (inspired by Tyrus Wong’s legendary watercolor backgrounds in “Bambi” and Hayao Miyazaki’s lush forests), expanding on the tech the studio created...

Released originally in 2002, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch is still one of the most beloved and popular animated films of the 21st century. The story of an energetic and misunderstood alien who is a space criminal but is actually a very good guy and his human friend from Hawaii captured the hearts of many fans, both old and young. The film spawned a sequel and several television series, but of course – with Disney recycling its animated films into live-action versions – a live-action adaptation of the movie is on the way, and we can confirm that the movie will be released later this year on Disney+ and that it will be a streaming-exclusive release that won’t be shown in theaters as far as things stand now.
The movie was initially foreshadowed in 2018, but production took a while, being finished after six years, as things stand now. Although we have to be fair,...

Disney+ looks to be the destination for the live action take of Disney’s 2002 animated hit Lilo & Stitch, which is set for a 2024 release.
We’ve known that a live action take on Disney’s Lilo & Stitch was on the way for a long time now. After all, the project went into active development all the way back in 2020 but as you well know, the world has been in an interesting place over the last few years, not least in the global film industry.
Post-production commenced on the project back in February but it was assumed that everything was running behind on the picture, given that a fire on set in 2022 stalled production by several months before last year’s Hollywood strikes further slowed things down.
With that in mind, the project wasn’t expected to arrive this year but a piece by The Hollywood Reporter is claiming...

It isn’t every week that two of the biggest jobs in film are filled within a matter of days, but that was the case last week. On February 26, Disney’s live-action president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production Sean Bailey exited, making way for Searchlight’s David Greenbaum to take the top job. Two days later on Feb. 28, Rideback’s Dan Lin was tapped to take Scott Stuber’s open seat atop Netflix’s film division.
Greenbaum made his bones on prestige indie films and original, auteur-driven stories. He’s now taking the job at a company that has spent the last 15 years mining IP and playing the hits. Lin is a franchise builder now stepping into an environment known for chasing big prestige swings.
It appears Disney and Netflix are heading in opposite directions. One agent who spoke with IndieWire called it a role-reversal between Disney and Netflix; at one point,...

At least one live-action Disney remake just took a major step backward. Last year, we learned that the Oscar-winning Sarah Polley ("Women Talking") was set to direct a new live-action reimagining of the 1940s classic "Bambi." Now, it's been revealed that Polley has left the project. There is currently no word on who will replace her and, not to get too ahead of ourselves here, but the answer may be nobody.
According to a report from The Wrap, Polley has quietly left the remake. It's unclear when the filmmaker departed or why she split from Disney on this one. The report also notes that it's equally unclear if the movie will still move forward. Part of that has to do with the recent departure of Sean Bailey, the former president of Walt Disney Motion Picture Production. Bailey was largely responsible for the deluge of live-action remakes of animated classics that...

The two-and-a-half-minute trailer features “What a Wonderful World,” performed by Nyong’o, and only one line of dialogue: “Sometimes, to survive, we must become more than we were programmed to be.”
The voice cast also includes Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as fox Fink, Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) as opossum Pinktail, Oscar nominee Bill Nighy (Living) as goose Longneck, Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as gosling Brightbill, and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island. Emmy winner Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible) also lend their voices to the 2024 animated adaptation.

Man, humans are the worst. There's probably a good reason why we keep gravitating towards stories and myths that explore what life would be like with minimal involvement by us pesky people -- or even go so far as to remove us from the equation altogether. Animated classics like "The Iron Giant" and "Wall-e" took the basic ideas of robots attempting to understand the natural world and spun those respective concerns into two of the very best movies of the last 25 years. Now, "The Wild Robot" looks set to tackle very similar concerns in what sure looks like another win for the medium of animation.

It's arriving in theaters in September later this year, but with Kung Fu Panda 4 opening this week, the trailer is out to play in front of that. After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot called Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island's animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose. Lilo & Stitch is getting the live-action treatment at Disney, and it will be released much sooner than fans think. The original 2002 Lilo & Stitch was a unique project for Disney because it wasn’t based on any previous material like its other animated movies. Still, nonetheless, it proved to be more successful than they had planned, birthing two movies, three animated television series, and the upcoming live-action remake. This upcoming remake is another film to join the slate of Disney live-action remakes like Beauty and The Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Mulan, and Peter Pan and Wendy.

Disney executive Sean Bailey is exiting after 15 years as the motion picture group’s president of production. He’ll be replaced by Searchlight’s chief David Greenbaum, who has been named to the newly created role of president of Live Action and 20th Century Studios.
In his new post, effective immediately, Greenbaum will report to Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman. This shakeup merges two of Disney’s film divisions: live-action (responsible for remakes and spinoffs of the studio’s classics) and 20th Century Studios.
“David has an incredible creative sensibility and eye for film, and he has built a reputation as an exceptional leader and creative executive, as proven by his track record at Searchlight Pictures and deep relationships throughout the industry,” Bergman said in a statement. “I’m thrilled that he’ll be taking on this new and important role.”

Elvis has had a resurgence in popular culture with Baz Luhrmann's colorful fantasia "Elvis" about his dazzling star presence and complex relationship with Colonel Parker, and Sofia Coppola's incisive "Priscilla" which views him through a more critical lens, delving into the uneven power dynamics and manipulation that defined his marriage.
But it was "Lilo & Stitch" that introduced Elvis to many millennial and Gen Z audiences. With its quirky alien characters and gorgeous watercolor backgrounds that illustrate the Hawaiian setting, "Lilo & Stitch" is one of the most unique Disney films. But what also makes "Lilo & Stitch" such a singular film is its soundtrack, particularly its inclusion of the crooning heartthrob from the 1950s, Elvis Presley. The adorable six-year-old Lilo overlooks any of Elvis' flaws and views him as a "model citizen" whom her naughty blue "puppy" Stitch can look up to.

Disney loves a live-action remake. The House of Mouse has discovered that instead of coming up with new ideas they can simply remake their classic animated flicks into live action. The results have been pretty darn profitable, and the studio shows no signs of stopping — there are currently live-action remakes of "Moana" and "Lilo and Stitch" on the way. One of their successful live-action remakes was the 2019 take on "Aladdin," helmed by — believe it or not — Guy Ritchie. The film was a smash, hauling in over $1 billion worldwide and going on to become the ninth highest-grossing film of 2019.

Studio Ghibli, like Western counterparts Disney, Pixar and the UK’s Aardman, is one of the most important animation studios in movie history. Since its first feature film, “Castle in the Sky” in 1986, Studio Ghibli has delivered two dozen thought-provoking tales beautifully rendered in a unique brand of animation. To date, its output has racked up have a lucky seven Oscar bids for Best Animated Feature.
“Spirited Away” was the first Studio Ghibli movie to break into the Academy Awards conversation and did so with aplomb in 2003. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Miyazaki the recipient) over “Ice Age,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.”
In 2006, Miyazaki was again nominated — this time for “Howl’s Moving Castle” alongside “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” with the latter movie, an Aardman creation, reigning victorious.

The Lilo & Stitch movie is currently filming in Hawaii and we have some photos from set!
Billy Magnussen is playing the role of Agent Pleakley and he was spotted in costume on set on Monday (February 5) in Oahu, Hawaii.
In the Disney animated movie, Pleakley was an alien sent to Earth by the United Galactic Federation to prevent Dr. Jumba Jookiba from harming anything or anyone on Earth while they look for Stitch.
It was believed by many that Billy would just be voicing the role of Pleakley and the character would be created using CGI, but it appears the character might be human after all.
Billy is best known for roles in movies like Into the Woods, Game Night, Aladdin, and No Time to Die, as well as the series Made for Love.
One of the actors cast in the movie had to be recast amid a controversy.

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. Appearing on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" (via Variety), actor Jacob Elordi -- who plays Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola's "Priscilla" -- admitted that, prior to portraying the King of Rock and Roll, he only really knew the music legend from ... "Lilo & Stitch." Amusing as that is, truth be told, Disney's beloved animated 2002 sci-fi feature was probably how many members of Generation Z came to learn about The King's existence for the first time, some 20 years before Elordi donned his iconic bell-bottomed white jumpsuit for Coppola's memoir and Austin Butler (permanently?) altered his voice to rock out in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis."
In case you need your memory jogged, the original "Lilo & Stitch" sees the titular alien Stitch getting a crash course in Elvis' history from his newfound companion, the oddball young Native Hawaiian girl Lilo, resulting in various montages scored to Elvis tunes like...

Spaeny then brought up the popular story of the “Fool’s Gold” loaf: the massive 8,000-calorie sandwich comprised of a pound of bacon, a loaf of sourdough bread, a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jelly that Presley first discovered at the Colorado Mine Company restaurant in Denver. Jacob Elordi didn’t quite go full bacon Pb&Js to play Elvis Presley, but he did chow down on a pound of bacon per day to transform into the suave singer.
Elordi, who infamously revealed he learned about Elvis through watching “Lilo & Stitch,” stars in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me.”
Writer-director Coppola told Entertainment Weekly in the below video that “Priscilla told us that Elvis liked really burnt bacon,” and Elordi took the tidbit to heart…and stomach.
“I averaged like a pound of bacon a day,” Elordi said. “It’s not that noticeable because I’m quite long. But I was the biggest I’ve ever been.”
Elordi co-starred alongside Cailee Spaeny who plays the titular Priscilla in the period piece. Coppola previously shared that Elordi “indulged” her in potentially raffling off a pickleball game to raise funds for the indie film.

Jacob Elordi plays Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, a film that chronicles the life of Priscilla Presley and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
While making an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, the Euphoria actor said that his only reference to Elvis prior to portraying the performer was from the Disney animated movie Lilo & Stitch.
“The most I knew of Elvis was in Lilo & Stitch,” Elordi told the NBC late-night show host.
The Australian actor said that portraying Elvis in the film “wasn’t on my list of people to play. It was definitely — it was a little bit terrifying.
Elordi also talked about his audition process saying that he didn’t feel he had a chance to get the part. However, he saw a clip of the singer as he came back from the army in Germany “And I read the lines...

Before starring as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Jacob Elordi was only familiar with the King of Rock and Roll from Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch.”
During a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,” Elordi sat down to discuss his role in the film, which centers on the life of Priscilla Presley (Cailee Spaeny) and her relationship with Elvis.
“The most I knew of Elvis was in ‘Lilo & Stitch,'” Elordi admitted. “Which is a lot, by the way.”
“Lilo & Stitch” follows Lilo (Daveigh Chase) and her friendship with an extraterrestrial creature she meets on the island of Hawaii, whom she names Stitch (Chris Sanders). Lilo, an avid Elvis Presley fan, teaches Stitch how to become a “model citizen” like the singer and, at one point, dresses Stitch up in a Presley-inspired ensemble. More than 50 years after its premiere, "M*A*S*H" is still one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time. The show became a phenomenon across its 11 seasons and bowed out on a high note with a finale that was watched by millions. The show also became so firmly entrenched in the cultural zeitgeist that decades later, viewers are still curious about the cast and the relationships behind the scenes. There have been some great recent reunions in recent years -- for one, Mike Farrell and Alan Alda read (and then criticized) an AI-written "M*A*S*H" script earlier this year. Unfortunately, several key "M*A*S*H" castmates have passed away over the years, leaving us to remember them through their work and through memories shared by loved ones and costars.

Gore Verbinski's blue-soaked, melancholic "The Ring" incited a wave of J-horror stateside upon its release in 2002. A new century always brings new horror rules, and for the early part of this century, those rules mandated imported ghosties with tragic, complex backstories. Unlike most horror remakes, especially J-horror remakes, Verbinski's "The Ring" is arguably stronger than Hideo Nakata's original, no small feat given Nakata's status as one of this generation's premier Japanese horror auteurs. Post-millennium anxiety, digital unease, and swelling domestic discontent coalesced into more than hospitable conditions for "The Ring" to not just succeed, but succeed remarkably. $249 million worldwide isn't bad by any metric.
Beyond Verbinski's assured control of the material, the cast of new and familiar faces helped augment "The Ring's" most enduring scares. While Naomi Watts might be front and center, Daveigh Chase's contributions as chief baddie Samara Morgan cannot be overstated. With a dense,...

Aside from the story or dazzling animation, music is often what we take away the most from Walt Disney Animation films. In this case, we're focusing on the music accompanied by words, not just the compositional score. The songs are frequently the heart and soul of the movie, bringing to life the characters' emotions and motivations and moving the plot forward through lively melodies and lyrics.
Music also establishes a particular style and atmosphere that is reinforced by the visual aesthetic. It's difficult to imagine the idiosyncratic humor of"Hercules" without the muses' Gospel anthems, or "Lilo & Stitch" without Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu's breezy vocals that immediately transport you to the Hawaiian setting.
The songs are either part of the diegetic story, meaning they are sung and heard by the characters, or a non-diegetic part of the soundtrack, outside the world of the narrative and overlaying the on-screen action. But...

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Disney just announced the release of the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. It’s packaged together as a three-volume set that unfolds into your own storybook.

As anyone who pays attention to the movie industry knows, SAG-AFTRA is on indefinite strike. And that, combined with the now months-long WGA strike, means that all film and TV productions involving SAG actors, from Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel to the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” film, have halted until the labor dispute concludes.
Well, almost all productions. Unlike the WGA strike, which has been fairly hard-line, some SAG actors are still allowed to work — provided their productions receive permission from the union. Since July 18, SAG-AFTRA has been providing select independent films with “interim agreements,” which allow them and the SAG-represented actors in them to continue production during the work stoppage. The main requirement for an agreement is that the film must be truly independent — with no ties to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents over 350 American and film production companies in their collective bargaining agreements with SAG.

Ctam and Common Sense Media have partnered on StreamSafely Summer Camp,, an online destination at StreamSafely.com where parents and kids can find safe, family-friendly programming without the risks that come with pirated content. The site includes a collection of 46 movies curated by the nonprofit Common Sense Media available through June, July and August, along with a checklist for parents on safe streaming.
A Ctam study from October 2022 found that 38% of households with kids report accessing pirated content a few times a year, well above the mean for the US adult population overall (26%). Piracy sites appear free, but they make money by stealing personal information, often by installing destructive malware or ransomware on users’ home computers. The Beanie Baby craze of the ’90s was something to behold. Millions of people collected as many of the colourful plush bears as they could get their hands on, with some even convinced that they would become lucrative investments. As most of us know someone with a box (or several) of Beanie Babies taking up space in their garage, that investment didn’t exactly pay off. Apple Original Films have dropped the first trailer for The Beanie Bubble, which chronicles the rise of stuffed toys.
The Beanie Bubble stars a beardless Zach Galifianakis (which is still so weird to me) as Ty Warner, the toy manufacturer who would become a billionaire thanks to the Beanie Baby craze in the late 1990s. The Beanie Bubble also stars Elizabeth Banks (Cocaine Bear) as Robbie, Ty’s business partner, Sarah Snook (Succession) as Warner’s wife Sheila, and Geraldine Viswanathan (Miracle Workers) as Ty Inc.

Remember when Beanie Babies broke the Internet? Well, the iconic toy is now landing its own biopic for audiences to see what it truly takes to build a plush stuffed animal from scratch.
Apple’s “The Beanie Bubble” charts the rise and fall of the ingenious collectible stuffed animals, with Elizabeth Banks and Zach Galifianakis playing the real-life toy titans who invented the craze. Check out The Wounded Storyteller, E. T. A. Hoffmann’s classic tales of Gothic horror and fantasy are presented in a new translation accompanying the beguiling drawings of Natalie Frank.
“E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776–1822) was one of the greatest German Romantic authors of fantasy and a pioneer in the genre we now call Gothic horror. His innovative stories explore ideas of madness, genius, doppelgängers, artificial intelligence, and the boundaries between realities and dreams. Artist Natalie Frank and leading fairy-tale scholar Jack Zipes have joined forces in this lavishly illustrated volume of five of Hoffmann’s most influential tales: The Golden Pot, The Sandman, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, The Mystifying Child, and The Mines of Falun. In addition to offering fresh translations, Zipes introduces the project and sheds light on how Hoffmann’s lifetime of personal traumas shaped his writing.”

When Bob Iger took over Walt Disney again, one of his first moves was to reassure Wall Street that more sequels and remakes were coming. Disney has a lot in its vault, and remaking animated classics as live-action movies is widely seen as a safe strategy, with built-in audiences for familiar fare.
That strategy is coming into question, though, as weak international box office numbers for “The Little Mermaid” trickle in. The live-action remake of the 1989 film grossed $95 million in its Friday-Sunday North American debut, but just $68 million overseas. For comparison, star power fueled the 2019 “Aladdin” remake with Will Smith and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” with Emma Watson, both of which earned more than $1 billion, mostly overseas.
What ties Disney’s recent remakes together is that they’re primarily based on movies from what’s called its “Renaissance” period — a range from the late 1980s to late 1990s when...

Halle Bailey is ready to make her big screen debut as Ariel in Rob Marshall’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.” But before the actress and singer dove under the sea, she first had to discover the perfect mermaid swim.
“The process of working with the [mermaid] tail was an unforgettable one,” Bailey told TheWrap. “I remember before going to London, I actually had this beautiful training session with these amazing synchronized swimmers that would come to my house every Sunday.”
The swimmers, according to Bailey, would take the actress through the steps of learning how to swim like a mermaid. With the help of a model fin, Bailey learned the gracefulness and ease of swimming like a mermaid, eventually cultivating the perfect Ariel swim.
But the process of filming her scenes as Ariel were vastly different than this training period.
