Last summer, ABC resurrected the BattleBots TV show. It performed well enough in the ratings for the network to bring it back and order even more episodes. How will it perform this time around? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a third season? Stay tuned.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a story for Sports Illustrated about something called chess boxing. It’s pretty much like it sounds - people box for a couple minutes and then switch to playing chess for a few more minutes. This goes back and forth until someone gets knocked out or checkmated. I affectionately referred to it as “Fight Club for Nerds.” I stand corrected. That title really should belong to the ABC series BattleBots. The show, which is a reboot of the old Comedy Central program of the same title, is a competition between robots (and their drivers) that look to pulverize each other into fine bits of shrapnel while throngs of fans scream in excitement. And when you consider each robot costs around $14,000, that’s some expensive shrapnel. It’s as wacky as it sounds. Nerds like me inexplicably watch it because…that’s what we do.

ABC premiered its first season of its BattleBots revival on June 21, 2015. Now the network announces it has renewed the once-cancelled Comedy Central series, for a second season. On the competitive reality series, contestants design and build robots, which face off against each other in combat.

ABC has renewed “BattleBots” for a second season, the network announced Thursday. Following the summer ratings hit “Celebrity Family Feud,” the six-episode first season of “BattleBots” earned an average of 5.4 million total viewers and a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49. Season 2 will keep the single-elimination tournament format of the first, but will double the size of the field to include expert roboticists, garage builders, families on a mission and past winners returning to defend their turf. ABC has decided to revive BattleBots. The original series, which ended in 2002, ran for five seasons and 94 episodes on Comedy Central. It covered five BattleBot tournaments of homemade robots fighting each other.

The six new episodes are expected to air this summer.

At least since 1927's "Metropolis," and continuing into the modern era with "Transformers" and this summer's anticipated blockbuster "Pacific Rim," robots have been a fixture in movies and television. Some of the mechanized creations have become popular characters in their own right, from Robby the Robot of "Forbidden Planet" and the nameless robot in TV's "Lost in Space" to those lovable droids R2-D2 and C-3Po in "Star Wars," to name just a few.

A burgeoning TV and movie genre over the years has pitted robots in battle against one another, and for a while, the "battling robots" TV trend was popular, most notably in the Comedy Central series "BattleBots." But that series featured robots created by home inventors doing battle. "Robot Combat League," premiering Tuesday, Feb. 26, on Syfy, ups the ante, combining elements of "BattleBots" with cinematic robotics.
