For a few years in the '90s, it seemed like Helen Hunt was destined to be a mainstay on the big and small screen alike forever. The actor landed her earliest movie role in 1977, playing a teenager in the disaster movie "Rollercoaster," which featured a singularly weird plot about a man trying to bomb an amusement park ride. Hunt continued to act over the next decade, taking roles in films like "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Peggy Sue Got Married," plus the popular doctor drama "St. Elsewhere." But it wasn't until the '90s, when Hunt earned a trifecta of great, memorable roles, that she truly became a household name.
Hunt's big break came from "Mad About You," a 1992 sitcom in which she played one half of a New York City newlywed couple opposite Paul Reiser. Plotlines for the show mined married life for humor, but they...

TV medical dramas have been the rage for decades with the emphasis on hospital-based medical shows. However, the first responder drama can be just as thrilling. Firefighters are the usual focus yet there can also be paramedics or other types of emergency workers. The shows are usually packed with thrills and the focus on “emergency of the week” storylines.
The best ones also have compelling characters, well written subplots and enthrall viewers every week. There are a lot out there and thanks to streaming, you can find plenty around. For anyone into a first responder drama, these dozen are worth tracking down on streaming.
Fire Country “Pilot” – Max Thieriot stars as Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in Northern California where he and other inmates are partnered with elite firefighters to extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires across the region.

Independent media company and film distribution studio Angel Studios will provide early access for its upcoming film “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot” to audiences with a special free screening June 19 as part of AMC’S Juneteenth programming initiative.
Starring “Euphoria” actor Nika King and executive produced by Letitia Wright, the film is inspired by the true story of a small community in East Texas that embraced kids in the foster system no one else would adopt. With the help of Donna Martin and her husband Bishop Martin, 22 families adopted 77 children in the town.
AMC Theatres has hosted its Celebration of Juneteenth program, a special presentation of movies from Black filmmakers, for the past few years. In 2023, Stephen Williams’ “Chevalier” and A.V. Rockwell’s “A Thousand and One” were screened throughout the week of Juneteenth.

Alejandro Monteverde delivered Angel Studios its top hit ever with Sound of Freedom, one of 2023’s biggest theatrical success stories with more than $250 million at the global box office. Now, the faith-based outfit has signed the director to a rich overall deal with some curious terms, including the purchase of a multimillion-dollar home for him.
According to Angel Studios SEC filings that lay out the terms of the deal, Monteverde, 46, has inked a 10-year agreement with the faith-based studio that will see him direct five to 10 theatrical films. It comes during a time of industry contraction that is seeing traditional Hollywood companies jettison expensive overall deals.
But this deal comes with some interesting stipulations. The potential films from Monteverde will have to be deemed “theatrical worthy” in a rating system from the Angel Guild, the studio’s paid membership service that gives members (now numbering more than 300,000, per the company...

Martin Scorsese accepted the Producers Guild’s David O. Some producers will say it’s hard to be a producer in today’s world of streaming vs. theatrical — heck, even post-pandemic, but Gail Berman provided a lot of inspiration while accepting the Norman Lear Award at tonight’s PGA Awards.
At the aorta of her acceptance speech (watch it above) was how she got Buffy the Vampire Slayer off the ground, born out of a 1992 summer B-movie.
“Not a single person was interested in buying that television show,” she said onstage. “I mean not a single person on this Earth was interested in buying that television show. I couldn’t ignore my gut. An empowerment story with a young woman at the center. We got ‘no’ after ‘no’ after ‘no.’ Then one day, we finally got a ‘yes.’ And I gotta say, it all comes down to resilience.”

Exclusive: The “Pay It Forward” PSA was launched during the Producers Guild Awards tonight, featuring a group of producers discussing producing.
“I’d say it starts with a feeling,” Victoria Alonso says.
Other producers featured in the video include Tommy Oliver, James Lopez, Taja Perkins, Ian Cooper, Kyle Wilson, Gary Goetzman, Linda Morel, Sharon Lopez, Jessica Elbaum and Christine Oh.
They take turns talking about all the obstacles they have to go through to make a production happen, like directors asking for a Black Hawk but not specifying if they meant the helicopter or the bird. Wilson says he ended up booking both.

Not to sound like a broken record, but it was, once again, a pretty quiet weekend at the box office. Director Matthew Vaughn's "Argylle" topped the charts with a modest $18 million (which was sadly below industry projections) and, quite frankly, that isn't going to be enough to keep theaters afloat until the slate improves in March. But amid the unfortunate slowness of the weekend, a savior emerged in the form of Jesus. Yes, that very same Jesus. And it's not the first time he's come to the rescue in recent months.
The Chosen Inc. released the first three episodes of "The Chosen" season 4 in theaters over the weekend in partnership with Fathom Events. It paid off: The target audience indeed showed up for the cinematic, episodic look at the life of Jesus Christ, with the release pulling in just shy of $6 million over the weekend. The first teaser trailer for 9-1-1 season seven has a real Titanic vibe. The 30-second video shows a ship in distress but doesn’t confirm that Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause) are on board. However, given their history, there’s a 99.9% likelihood the twosome’s honeymoon plans will come to an abrupt – and watery – end.
At the end of season six, the couple decided to spend their honeymoon on a cruise without telling any of their friends. And so, of course, the new season will begin with a dramatic rescue at sea.
Season seven marks the show’s move from Fox to ABC. The new season kicks off on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 8pm Et/Pt.

2023 is going to be a year that we look back on for some time as an important one in cinema history. We've had monster hit movies, yes, but more than that, it was a year of transition for Hollywood. The great box office recovery in the pandemic era continued, but it did so by bucking trends. The charge wasn't led by superheroes, nor by Disney remakes or anything we've come to expect over the last decade or so. From adult-skewing biopics to video game icons, and even faith-based cinema, moviegoers turned out this year in unexpected ways.
This will go down as the first year in decades that sequels didn't reign supreme atop the global box office. It marks the first time in recent memory that superhero movies, by and large, weren't a guaranteed pathway to success. It was a year in which one of the biggest movies came out...

The first weekend of August is in the books and to the surprise of no one Barbie remains atop the charts with an estimated $53 million, bringing its domestic total to an impressive $459.3 million and its worldwide total hovering around the one billion dollar mark. It won’t be long before Barbie has a higher worldwide total than the highest grossing Transformers movie (2011’s Dark of the Moon with $1.12 Billion.) The film is a juggernaut, and it is the rare massive hit that doesn’t already have a sequel in development.

“Sound of Freedom” has crossed $100 million at the domestic box office. The Angel Studios-distributed drama has sold over 8.9 million tickets and has shown little signs of slowing down as it enters its third weekend in theaters.
“‘Sound of Freedom’ has become the people’s movie,” stated Angel Studios Global Distribution SVP Jared Geesey. “It was chosen by over 100,000 people in the Angel Guild, fueled by untold tens of thousands through our ‘Pay it Forward’ program, and is dominating the box office as the result of a ground-up, grassroots movement of everyday people who are making this a historic success.”
The picture stars Jim Caviezel as Tim Ballard, a former government agent who embarks on a mission to rescue children from sex traffickers in Colombia. “Sound of Freedom” opened with $14.2 million on its opening day, July 4, in 2,634 theaters and passed $41.7 million by the end of its long Tuesday-Sunday debut frame.

“Sound of Freedom,” this summer’s unlikely box office hit, has crossed the $100 million mark in North America after three weeks of release.
It’s an impressive milestone for the low-budget, faith-based movie, especially in the height of summer blockbuster season. It also marks the first indie release in post-pandemic times to surpass $100 million at the domestic box office. Last year’s Oscar-winning arthouse smash “Everything Everywhere All at Once” topped $100 million globally, but that included $63 million at the international box office. “Sound of Freedom” isn’t playing overseas.
“Sound of Freedom” stands as the 16th-highest grossing North American release of the year. At this rate, the movie looks to keep climbing that list and soon supplant the No. 14 and 15 spots, which currently belong to “Scream VI” with $108 million and “The Flash” with $107 million.
Religious and conservative media groups have rallied behind the film, which is partially crowdfunded and backed by the Utah-based Angel Studios.

After its franchise record $235 million global opening, Paramount/Skydance’s “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” still has a long way to go to turn a profit at the box office against its Covid-inflated $290 million budget, but the overwhelming praise that it has earned from critics and audiences has put it in position to accomplish that mission.
That is, assuming that it can still maintain moviegoers’ attention after what is set up to be the most competitive weekend the box office has seen in years.
Along with the second weekend of “Dead Reckoning,” audiences will have two highly anticipated newcomers to choose from with Warner Bros.’ “Barbie,” which has seen overwhelmingly strong advance ticket sales, and Universal’s “Oppenheimer,” which has earned rave reviews from its Paris premiere and will be taking over the world’s Imax screens for the next three weeks.

Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” is No. 1 at the box office, though it is flying at a lower altitude than expected with $16.4 million grossed on Friday from 4,327 theaters, as studio estimates project a five-day opening of $78 million for Tom Cruise’s seventh round as Ethan Hunt.
Prior to the weekend, projections for “Dead Reckoning” stood at $85-95 million, but the film is instead opening in the same vicinity the $77 million five-day start of “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” in 2018 and slightly below the $82 million five-day start of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” two weekends ago
To be fair, comparisons to those films are not exact, as the five-day start of “Dead Reckoning” stretches from its release this past Wednesday through estimated Sunday grosses, while “Fallout” and “Dial” were Friday–Tuesday totals with “Dial” getting a small Fourth of July boost on Tuesday. “Sound of Freedom,” a religious thriller led by “The Passion of the Christ” star Jim Caviezel, is becoming an unlikely box office savior. The faith-based movie about child sex trafficking has collected an impressive $40 million after six days of release.
“Sound of Freedom” opened last Tuesday, generating a mighty $14.2 million on the Independence Day holiday. The film picked up another $18.2 million between Friday and Sunday, enough to place third on domestic box office charts behind “Insidious: The Red Door” ($32.6 million) and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” ($26.5 million). It’s playing in 2,850 North American theaters, a smaller footprint than “Insidious” and “Indiana Jones.

The Jim Caviezel child-trafficking drama “Sound of Freedom” from faith-based distributor Angel Studios made $14.2 million in a single day when it opened July 4. You can chalk that success up to any number of reasons: Religious audiences are underserved, the film has been bolstered by major right-wing pundits (and Donald Trump himself), and it opened on a rare Tuesday after “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” had five days to quiet down.
But the film’s real godsend is the ability for “Sound of Freedom” fans to buy movie tickets for complete strangers.
Angel Studios calls it “Pay It Forward,” in which you can buy a ticket for “Sound of Freedom,” pay for another one, and someone else can apply to redeem it if they don’t have the financial means. A larger group of people buying tickets in bulk, such as for a company or a church, can even...

Update, 2:20Pm: Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny officially wins Tuesday with $11.698M over Sound of Freedom‘s reported $11.5M. Monday revised on Dial of Destiny was $11.7M, which means business was even on July 4th; and that’s solid for any tentpole on that holiday. 5-day on Dial of Destiny is $83.7M.

With a rare Tuesday opening, “Sound of Freedom” (Angel Studios), a drama starring Jim Caviezel as a real-life rescuer of children from traffickers, grossed $11,563,200 — just under the day’s total for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney), which played in almost 2,000 more theaters with just under $11.7 million.
Another difference: “Indiana Jones” often played on multiple screens. Based on theater spot-checks, “Freedom” played mostly single screens, often with smaller capacities, and saw sold-out shows. The result was a stark contrast in the films’ per-theater average: “Indiana” was about $2,543 in 4,600 theaters, while “Freedom” saw about $4,400 in 2,634 theaters.
Angel also reported that its “Pay It Forward” promotion grossed an additional $2,679,000 thanks to patrons buying gift tickets for others for future use. Under normal industry practice, that revenue should be counted as they are used. With that among added, the day’s take for the film exceeded $14.2 million, which would make it #1 for the day.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the 9-1-1 Season 6 finale “Pay It Forward.”] 9-1-1 ends its run on Fox with just the type of finale we’ve come to expect from the drama. Almost the entire 118 is injured when an overpass collapses: Buck’s (Oliver Stark) face is bloody, Hen (Aisha Hinds) has a concussion, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) has broken ribs, Chimney (Kenneth Choi) is impaled, and Bobby (Peter Krause) has a probable AC joint sprain. They’re all back at work by the end. As for their personal lives, Buck — who delivers Kameron (Chelsea Kane) and Connor’s (Colin McCalla) baby on his couch — and Natalia (Annelise Cepero) are giving it a try; Eddie calls Marisol (Edy Ganem) and sets up a date; Hen and Karen (Tracie Thoms) are fostering a baby girl; Chimney and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) are planning their wedding at home; and Bobby and Athena (...

The 118 is the emergency in the 9-1-1 Season 6 finale, and it’s really not looking good in the aftermath, as you can see in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek. (We thought things looked dire in the photos!) In “Pay It Forward” (the last episode to air on Fox before the move to ABC for Season 7), a series of freeway car accidents leads to a catastrophic overpass collapse that endangers the lives of civilians and members of the 118. At least it looks like Buck (Oliver Stark), whom we see first in the tense clip, is Ok (relatively speaking) after the collapse, when he comes to on top of the ambulance. Hen (Aisha Hinds), inside, however, is a different story: She’s unconscious. “118, report in. I need a head count,” Buck says over the radio. Ravi’s (Anirudh Pisharody) the only one up top and responds that he’s grabbing the ropes.

Every year, a lot of actors win awards on Oscar night, but the ones who most often win the evening are the young stars and starlets who get to walk the red carpet. Sometimes they even win Oscar gold too. With any luck, the young star of “The Florida Project” Brooklynn Prince will make a splash at this year’s ceremony, but here are some of the cutest kids of years’ past:
Jackie Cooper – “Skippy” (1930)
Jackie Cooper was nominated for Best Actor for his role in 1930’s “Skippy.” To date, he’s the youngest boy to ever be nominated in the Best Actor category. He lost to Lionel Barrymore, who thanked Cooper in his acceptance speech. But Cooper didn’t hear it: he fell asleep on Marie Dressler’s arm during the ceremony (which started after midnight) and no one wanted to wake him.

It’s nearly impossible to become a household name faster than Haley Joel Osment did in the late ’90s. The critical and commercial success of The Sixth Sense catapulted him into the limelight as a child actor worthy of being considered alongside adult peers in major award categories.
Osment seemingly managed to avoid the dark side of young stardom despite his entrance into the entertainment industry coming in a way that can only be described as creepy Af.

Axs TV will bring Farm Aid to market this Saturday in the way to which all performers have had to become accustomed: at home. Farm Aid’s four foremost board members — Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews — will join together, separately, to perform live April 11 at 8 p.m./5 Pt for “At Home with Farm Aid,” a special hosted by Nelson and his sons Lukas and Micah.
Besides the cable network itself, the hour-long broadcast can be seen at www.farmaid.org, along with Axs TV’s social media platforms.
The broadcast, like its decades of in-person antecedents, is a benefit for family farmers, with a special emphasis on how the coronavirus crisis is affecting independent growers during the pandemic.
“The coronavirus has disrupted our entire country and is a grave threat to all of us,” said Nelson, who serves as Farm Aid’s president, in a statement.

Apple TV+ is diving into the behind-the-scenes drama of morning news shows with their new series The Morning Show. We have a new trailer to share with you today that offers our first real look at the series, which stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell as TV reporters who are dealing with some big changes in their lives and careers.
Some of the content will seem familiar, as the trailer begins with Aniston’s morning show host reporting that her co-anchor (Carell) was fired over sexual misconduct allegations. This is similar to the whole Matt Lauer scandal at NBC. This is the event that kicks off a series, and it follows Aniston’s character as she finds herself being threatened with the end of her career after the emergence of a rising star played by Witherspoon.

While Ruth Bader Ginsburg origin story On the Basis of Sex is Mimi Leder’s first feature in 18 years, it isn’t a return. In the mind of the director, who was making groundbreaking television long before it was in vogue, she never really left. When she struggled to land a feature after the commercial underperformance of 2000’s Pay It Forward, Leder simply reoriented herself, returning to the ideas that drove her. “I didn’t want to make sh*tty films,” she says. “I wanted to do stories that mattered.” With her latest, examining a groundbreaking case Ginsburg fought as a young lawyer to create a path toward gender equality, the director does just that.
Currently at work on Apple’s anticipated morning show drama, which has yet to be titled, Leder premiered her latest at AFI Fest on November 8. For the director, who was the first female graduate of...

If an Oscar-tipped film such as “Green Book” seems like it’s a big step outside Farrelly’s comfort zone, think again. Farrelly’s work has often examined the clash of extreme cultural differences, whether Siamese twins who...

"Her story made history." Focus Features has debuted the first trailer for On the Basis of Sex, a new dramatic film about the early days of iconic Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Felicity Jones plays Rbg, and Armie Hammer plays her husband Marty, in a new film by director Mimi Leder. The title is a reference to a line from one of (or many of) Rbg's speeches, in which she explained: "the U.S. Constitution is nearly 220 years old and contains no express provision opposing discrimination on the basis of gender." This film is a compliment to the documentary about her, titled simply Rbg now playing in theaters. And it will premiere later this year in line with Justice Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court. The cast includes Justin Theroux, Cailee Spaeny, Kathy Bates, Stephen Root, Jack Reynor, Sam Waterston, and Francis X. McCarthy. Take a look.

At the age of 85, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, has one of the most impactful, inspiring political careers in history. When it comes to Hollywood, however, it seems as though she’s just now getting her due. Following the massive success of the documentary Rbg ($12 million at the box office and counting), one of the most iconic moments in her career will get the dramatic treatment this fall.
Directed by Mimi Leder and scripted by Daniel Stiepleman, On the Basis of Sex follows Ruth (Felicity Jones) and her husband Marty (Armie Hammer) as they fight to overturn gender discrimination in court. Hitting the nerve of issues that are unfortunately still timely today, it looks to be a strong showcase for Jones.

In recent months, media accounts of sexual harassment scandals and eye-popping pay disparities have given way to stories about “tectonic” shifts in the film industry. The sheer volume and often contradictory nature of the coverage on the issue of women working in film have created the simultaneous feelings that everything has changed and nothing has changed.
An ad campaign for Rolex watches touts Kathryn Bigelow as one of the “masters of cinema,” yet she is the only woman to have ever won a director Oscar. A help line now exists for those who have been sexually harassed, yet the fate of many high-profile offenders remains undecided. Representatives of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — which has issued charges of gender discrimination against the big studios — continue to negotiate with executives, but there is no (public) word of a resolution.
In the midst of this uncertainty, one reality remains clear. The percentages...

After two Emmys and two hit shows, “This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown has reached the point in his career where he gets to be selective in the projects he joins. And if he has his way, a reunion between Brown and his fellow “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” star Sarah Paulson appears inevitable.
Speaking beforehand at the IndieWire Honors event last week, Brown said he’s been talking to “American Crime Story” executive producer Ryan Murphy about potentially joining the anthology series’ third chapter, “Katrina.” Paulson is already on board.
“That needs to happen,” said Brown, who played Christopher Darden opposite Paulson’s Marcia Clark in “People v. O.J.,” which earned him his first Emmy in 2016. “I’m going to be reading the book that story is based off of [“Five Days at Memorial” by Sheri Fink] and offer whatever input I can to as to where I can fit in.
