An occasional look at the surprising creative outlets of members of the Hollywood community.
Producer Denise Di Novi has been a fixture in Hollywood since she first arrived on the scene with Heathers, the pitch-black comedy that became one of the breakout hits at Sundance when that festival was establishing itself. She has followed with credits including Edward Scissorhands, Message In A Bottle, James and the Giant Peach, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Batman Returns, Little Women, Ed Wood and many others.
Di Novi will reveal another side of herself when she unveils Portal, an exhibit of her paintings beginning August 10 at the Honarker Foundation Gallery in Laguna Beach. The exhibition runs through September 14.
She is passionate about her art, though she cannot really describe her style, because she isn’t trained in the traditional manner. It is just something that bubbles up and comes out of her.

In the sixth episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17, “Message in a Bottle,” Prentiss (Paget Brewster) and JJ (A.J. Cook) finally got to clear the air after the latter learned the former had kept her in the dark about Bau Gate, a dark web site using her image in deepfaked porn. Both women ended up high—JJ accidentally consumed Prentiss’ edibles—with the team’s Unit Chief admitting she was thinking about her future with the FBI. Her plan was to quit, after crossing a line with Voit (Zach Gilford); she couldn’t figure out why she was fighting so hard to win the battle of good versus evil, so she wanted to go out on her own terms if her career with the FBI was truly coming to an end. Even after finding out she was reinstated, she wanted to resign. Prentiss reminded JJ of everyone who had come...

Finally, we get an episode of Criminal Minds that focuses on the debilitating effects of working for the Bau.
Rossi has Ptsd, Emily is feeling the pain after being (temporarily?) demoted, and even Tyler's ex-girlfriend, who is inexplicably tied to Gold Star, can't believe how much pressure she's under as a result.
The walls are closing in on the entire Bau team, but most specifically, Rossi and Prentiss and "Message in a Bottle" went to great lengths to show that.
Rossi's Nightmares Bleed Through to Hallucinations
To say Rossi is struggling would be an understatement.
The opening scene was short of anything we've actually witnessed with the Bau, but it could have gone down like that at any time.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17 Episode 6 “Message in a Bottle.”] Ahead of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17, when TV Insider spoke with the cast, pretty much every single one hyped this as the series’ best season. And so far? It’s delivered. Part of that is the latest twist of the season as the Bau’s search for Gold Star continues. But also part of that are the quieter moments we get to see with the team, and among them are two in this episode: Tara (Aisha Tyler) checking in on Rossi (Joe Mantegna), whose struggles post-Voit abduction everyone can see, and JJ (A.J. Cook) with Prentiss (Paget Brewster) as the two deal with the fallout of the former’s discovery of BAUgate (a dark web site with deepfake porn of herself) and the latter wanting to quit. It’...

Producer Jonah Swilley and rapper Brandon “Bez” Evans are the two brains behind the hip-hop duo Revival Season. Their debut album, Golden Age of Self Snitching, is out February 23rd via Heavenly Recordings, and they’re previewing it with the lead single “Pump.”
Citing artists like Dungeon Family, OutKast, and Beastie Boys as some of their main inspirations, Revival Season often nod to hip-hop’s roots with their funk-forward approach. The duo formed while Swilley was looking for his next collaborator, and Bez quickly proved to be the man for the job, creating an “instant rapport and creative chemistry.”
“We kinda worked backwards, reverse-engineered a lot of songs,” explains Swilley, who’d make beats out of Bez’s isolated vocals. “I’d build a track around what he was doing vocally, kind of fill it out rhythmically, using his vocal as an instrument, seeing how I could accompany that musically...

Every 10 years or so, Hollywood seems to fall head over heels in love with a writer. In the 1990s, studios couldn't stop turning John Grisham's legal drama/thriller novels into movies. Such was also the case with romance novelist Nicholas Sparks, starting with "Message in a Bottle" in 1999 and stretching on throughout the 2000s and a little beyond.
More recently, journalist and writer David Grann has quietly emerged as the hot new thing in Tinseltown. His book "Killers of the Flower Moon" is now a $200 million, three-hour epic directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the screen rights to his newest work, "The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder," were acquired by Scorsese and DiCaprio before it was even published. Recent years have also seen Grann's book "The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon" and his New Yorker article...

Los Angeles, April 7 (Ians) American rapper Diddy said that he is paying Sting $5,000 per day for sampling the Police frontman’s 1983 blockbuster hit ‘Every Breath You Take’ on his own 1997 song ‘I’ll Be Missing You’.
Diddy tweeted in response to a resurfaced video clip from a 2018 interview Sting did with the Breakfast Club, reports Variety.
As noted by the Shade Room, the clips shows interviewer Charlamagne Tha God asking Sting to confirm whether Diddy pays him $2,000 daily for sampling the song on ‘I’ll Be Missing You’. Sting said yes, “for the rest of his life,” to laughter, and then confirmed that Diddy asked for permission to sample the hit after his own song was released.

Music stars often see their careers ebb and flow over time. After all, the industry moves at such a rapid pace that it’s difficult to keep the momentum going year after year. For instance, Sting has somehow managed to keep fans coming back for more for over 40 years. But his fourth album, 1993’s Ten Summoner’s Tales, marked a departure from what came before.

Music fans are often curious about the inspirations behind some of their favorite songs. After all, musicians often channel their creativity in all sorts of surprising ways. For instance, Sting – whose own stage name has an interesting backstory – was inspired to write his 1993 hit song “Fields of Gold” by his 16th-century home. Here’s what we know about how one of his most famous tunes came to be.

There's no bad blood between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. In fact, the "Super Freaky Girl" rapper only had mad love for the "Message in a Bottle" artist when they crossed paths at a 2022 MTV Video Music Awards after-party in New York City. In a video shared by Nicki on Aug. 29, the 39-year-old praised Taylor for being the "big winner of the night" as they posed for photos. Calling the 32-year-old musician "beautiful," Nicki continued, "Barbz, I know you love her. We all love her." The comment prompted a giggle from Taylor, who was clad in a midnight-blue romper embordered with stars that was a nod to her newly announced...

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? More like Dwayne "The Man" Johnson, according to Taylor Swift! On July 28, the singer found herself on the receiving end of some mad love from the actor when he appeared in a new video to announce that updated versions of "Bad Blood" and "Message in a Bottle" will be featured in his upcoming animated movie, DC League of Super-Pets. In the tongue-in-cheek clip, shared to Dwayne's TikTok account, the action star blasts "Bad Blood (Taylor's Version)" on his phone. The films will be based on some of Sparks’ most recent novels, the first being his 2021 hit The Wish—a story about the enduring legacy of first love, and the decisions that haunt us forever. Zack Hayden will produce the big-screen adaptation on behalf of Anonymous Content with oversight by CEO Dawn Olmstead and Cco David Levine, alongside Sparks’ longtime literary agent and collaborator, Theresa Park, and Universal Pictures’ Vice President of Production Development, Lexi Barta.

Even though Bosch has wrapped seven great seasons on Amazon Prime Video, Harry Bosch’s story is still far from over! The police procedural streaming series, starring Titus Welliver as LA Police detective Harry Bosch, continues in new format with a new title – Bosch: Legacy.
But don’t call it a spinoff, as star Welliver doesn’t truly categorize it as such. “I shudder to call it a spin-off because it’s really not; it’s just the continuing saga of Harry Bosch,” he told EW. “He’s in a different place, but it’s a continuation… A lot is revealed toward the end of this final season of Bosch — I do air quotes on that, ‘final season’ — which lays the foundation for where we will find these three characters as we open the new show.”

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
From “Bridget Jones’ Diary” to “Judy,” Renée Zellweger knows a thing or two about transformation.
The two-time Oscar winner’s latest, as convicted murderer Pam Hupp in NBC’s “The Thing About Pam,” is no exception. “It was a team of magicians,” Zellweger told me Monday night at a press event at the Maybourne Beverly Hills hotel. “What they’re capable of is pretty miraculous.”
The six-episode “The Thing About Pam” is based on the podcast of the same name and several episodes of “Dateline NBC,” which detailed the 2011 murder of Hupp’s friend Betsy Faria. Hupp has been charged with the killing. However, Faria’s husband Russ Faria was first sent to prison for the murder, but his conviction was overturned. Hupp is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Louis Gumpenberger. The real-life drama and the scripted retelling are truly bonkers.

Aparicio described the project during the streamer’s launch announcement on Wednesday.

Before long, he notices many strange occurrences taking place and is forced with facing a terrifying reality.”
She continued, “Part of the film was shot in Tlalpujahua, known as the magical village where it’s always Christmas, located in Central Mexico in Michoacan. Where the architecture and the local traditions are a point of pride for my country.

Sting has become the latest elder rocker to cash in his songwriting catalog, selling his back output to Universal Music for a reported $300 million.
In doing so, the 70-year-old Sting joins several such recent sales by artists, including Sony buying Bruce Springsteen’s songwriting catalog and recorded music copyrights for an estimated $550 million in December. Earlier last year, David Bowie’s estate sold his publishing catalog to Warner Chappell Music for $250 million.
Sting’s catalog includes hits like “Roxanne,” “Every Breath You Take,” and “Message in a Bottle,” songs written for his solo career and for The Police. Universal Music already owns his recorded music catalog.
The copyrights to more than 600 songs and future royalties on the catalog are included.
“I am delighted to have Jody and the team at Umpg curate and manage my song catalog,” Sting said in a news release, referring to Universal Music Publishing Group CEO Jody Gerson.

Story of lonely boy who feigns friendship with a dead peer has a smart premise but is wretchedly executed
By the end of its long running time, there’s something entirely unbearable about this pass-agg weepie teen-empathy musical, adapted from the 2015 stage hit. And that’s despite a satanically ingenious high-concept premise involving a letter of which even the great romdram novelist Nicholas Sparks, author of Message in a Bottle, might approve.
Ben Platt reprises his Broadway performance as Evan Hansen, the wretchedly lonely and unpopular high-schooler, nursing a broken arm in a cast and on all sorts of anxiety medication, whose therapist has got him writing tragically upbeat letters to himself, beginning “Dear Evan Hansen”. One day in a fit of gloomy honesty he types out a letter to himself in the first person, saying just how horrible his life is, rashly prints it out at school and the...

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Sting: My Songs kicks off May 22, 2020. In an interview with the Associated Press, the 17-time Grammy winner said he was “really committed” to a true Las Vegas experience.
“Visually, sound-wise, dancing — it’s going to be a Vegas show,” he said. “I am a little frightened and a little excited at the same time.”
A total of 16 performances are planned, and tickets will have a reasonable starting price point of $59.
Th 67-year-old performer said he finds the residency concept appealing: “Being in one place is actually a different, spiritual vibe. Welcoming people into your house — that’s basically what it’s going to be. I’ll be telling the story of my life through songs.

Sting unveiled new versions of three of his classic songs, “Demolition Man,” “Desert Rose” and “Brand New Day,” from his upcoming album, My Songs, out May 24th via Cherrytree/A&M/Interscope.
My Songs finds Sting interpreting songs from across his career, both as a solo artist and a member of the Police. Where will Maroon 5’s Super Bowl Liii show wind up on this list?
26. Black Eyed Peas (2011) Before this show, young ‘uns were celebrating the end of the halftime show being owned by the “retirement home.” Afterwards, the old folks were smugly smirking. The Peas were absolutely abominable, with stiff choreography and mailed-in vocals that made The Who seem 40 years younger. The absolute worst moment came when Slash arrived to save the day, only for Fergie to commit a cardinal sin against rock by mangling “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Later in 2011, the Peas’ new album got panned, their motion-sensor video game bombed, and by year’s end, they announced they were going on hiatus.
25. Indiana Jones (1995) If you thought Katy Perry’s shark was weird, get a load of this. Disney used this halftime show to promote its new Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland, and it featured Indy (not played by...

Demi Moore as Suzanne Dutchman in Michael Mailer's Blind: "It's a film about perception."
Michael Mailer and producer Jennifer Gelfer discuss the selection of Demi Moore's wardrobe with costume designer Evren Catlin (Liz W Garcia's One Percent More Humid starring Juno Temple, Maggie Siff, Julia Garner, Alessandro Nivola), Dylan McDermott's character not covering up a tattoo, what is real and what isn't, and why Blind (which has a screenplay by John Buffalo Mailer) is not Disney or Nicholas Sparks (Message In A Bottle, A Walk To Remember, The Notebook, Nights In Rodanthe, Dear John, The Longest Ride).
