Throughout her nearly 4 decades-long career, Kate Winslet’s journey has been marked by remarkable talent, dedication, and resilience. From her breakout role in the 1994 film, Heavenly Creatures to becoming a global icon with the 1997 film, Titanic, the actress has built herself quite a versatile career. However, it might have never been possible without some help from her former co-star and close friend, Emma Thompson. With the two having played sisters in the adaptation of Jane Austen’s book, Sense and Sensibility, they wound up having a rather tight-knit bond.

Kate Winslet says losing several Oscars never added pressure to her career to deliver an award-worthy performance. Winslet was always a bridesmaid and never a bride at the Academy Awards for a large chunk of her career, earning five Oscar nominations over a decade and never winning the prize. She finally landed her best actress statue in 2009 for “The Reader,” but even then she wasn’t feeling the pressure.
During an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked if Winslet ever felt pressure to win the Oscar after missing out for so long. As Winslet said: “Nominated a few times, never won.”
“No, it’s not a weight on the shoulders at all,” Winslet answered. “I still today can’t believe I get to do this job and have this career and met some extraordinary people and still continue to learn.”

Zoe Saldana would like to direct a 'James Bond' movie. The 46-year-old star is keen to move her talents behind the camera, and the 'Emilia Perez' actress would "love to start" that phase of her career with an "action-heist" blockbuster.Speaking at Toronto International Film Festival, she told TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey: "I’ve never seen a woman direct 'James Bond'. I like ‘The Equalizer.’ I watch crime shows, and, so, maybe in the future."I’ve always been drawn to heist themes. ‘Heat’ is a film that I need to watch at least once a year and analyse it, and the way that Michael Mann just pairs it all together, the way that everybody performed it."So, I would love to start with an action-heist sort of thing.”Saldana is keen to make sure she doesn't get "boxed in" as an artist, pointing to the way...

Zoe Saldaña might be a self-described “late bloomer.” As an actor whose films have earned $15 billion, she’s hitting her stride at the age of 46. But she’s ready to kick that red-hot career up a notch by moving into directing — and an action film is perhaps most appealing.

Oxford grad Hugh Grant has outgrown most of his romantic comedy ticks from his early years – flopsy-mopsy hair, fluttery eyelashes and charming stutter – and has matured into an exceptional and versatile actor. Not that he has lost his sense of humor. Anyone who chuckled over his villainous turn in this year’s “Paddington 2” as a pompous, cravat-wrapped actor who frames his cuddly ursine co-star for a crime he didn’t commit can testify to that Then there was his finely tuned scoundrel turn in the BBC miniseries, “A Very English Scandal,“ in which his Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe plots the botched murder of his male lover.
Grant began his acting career in the ‘80s as secondary player in both British period pieces — some good (“Maurice”) and others faintly ridiculous (“The Lair of the White Moon”) – and Hollywood comedies (the gangster farce “Mickey Blue Eyes”). But any hopes that he...

Hallmark+ will jump into the streaming battles Sept. 10 by launching the original series The Chicken Sisters and the new unscripted series Celebrations with Lacey Chabert.
Additional premieres will drop through the month, with three new installments of The Jane Mysteries starring Jodie Sweetin (Fuller House) and Stephen Huszar (Navigating Christmas), and a Love on the Danube movie trilogy featuring Nazneen Contractor (Charmed), Wes Brown (Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up), Jessica Sipos (Betty’s Bad Luck in Love), Dan Jeannotte (Sense and Sensibility), Sarah Power (Good Witch), Brendan Penny (Chesapeake Shores) and Catherine Disher (Good Witch).
Hallmark Media announced the launch of the service in July. The new platform will cost $80 a year and offer the “very best of Hallmark with new exclusive content and membership benefits program,” said President and CEO Mike Perry at the time. That price includes e-cards and “surprising gifts.”
Created for television and executive produced by Annie Mebane, The Chicken Sisters is an eight-episode family drama starring Schuyler Fisk (Sam & Kate), Genevieve Angelson (The Handmaid’s Tale), Lea Thompson (Back to the Future) and Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me!) as the women at the heart of the restaurant rivalry. James Kot (Virgin River), Margo Martindale (Justified) narrates. It’s based on the NY Times Bestseller and Reese’s Book Club selection The Chicken Sisters.
Following the first episode, new episodes premiere every Thursday starting on September 12.
As previously reported, Celebrations with Lacey Chabert is a new aspirational series executive produced and hosted by Chabert. Known for her multitude of starring roles in Hallmark movies over the years, Chabert will bring her passion for celebrating everyday heroes to this 10-episode series. The show follows Chabert as she surprises deserving individuals who are making a positive impact in their communities with the celebration of a lifetime. Following the first episode, new episodes premiere every Thursday.
Other series planned for the service include holiday limited series Holidazed and Mistletoe Murders; the reality competition series Finding Mr. Christmas; a docu-style dating series hosted by Ashley Williams; a home renovation show hosted by Luke Macfarlane; and new movie trilogy called Groomsmen that’s inspired by the success of The Wedding Veil.

Hugh Grant is “miserable” due to the closure of his local movie theater.

Kate Winslet remembered her Titanic and Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau following the news of his death at age 63, exclaiming that “his passion for filmmaking only deepened with age.”
Winslet said she’s known Landau “since I was 20 years old.” The British actress, who prior to Titanic was known for arthouse films like Sense and Sensibility and Heavenly Creatures, rocketed to blockbuster stardom with the Landau produced, James Cameron directed 1997 movie about the doomed ocean liner, which for a while, became the highest grossing movie ever at $2.2 billion (that title would cede to Cameron’s Avatar at $2.92 billion). Titanic earned Winslet her second career Oscar nomination/first Best Actress nom. In Titanic, Winslet played the upper crust passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater. Though engaged to rich guy Caledon “Cal” Hockley, Rose falls for Leonardo DiCaprio’s poor artist, Jack Dawson, while on board.

Kate Winslet wants to sink the feud rumors with James Cameron once and for all.

In 2022, Kate Winslet went to the London home of director Stephen Frears to discuss HBO’s political satire “The Regime.”
She’d been cast in the role of Elena Vernham, a narcissistic European autocrat, and Frears had been pinpointed by the production as a potential director.

“He said to me, ‘Well, it needs to be quite high,’” Winslet recalls. “And I didn’t have a fucking clue what he meant. And as I walked away, I realized I totally knew. It was his way of saying, ‘Go big or go home.

There is a moment early on in Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” — her second feature after 2021’s lyrical hybrid doc “A Night of Knowing Nothing” — that exemplifies this gently coruscating movie’s peculiar beauty. Prabha (Kani Kusruti) a hardworking nurse with tired eyes rides the commuter train home at the end of another long day, gazing out at the glimmering blur of the city. Her life is anything but a fairground and yet, clinging to a pole to steady herself with the rushing night air stirring her hair, she could almost be riding a carousel. Just two features into her young career, Kapadia has established her rare talent for finding passages of exquisite poetry within the banal blank verse of everyday Indian life.
Prabha works in a slightly shabby local hospital, where she spends her days tending to even the most difficult cases with a conspiratorial compassion...

Apple TV+ has ordered a series adaptation of Mick Herron’s “Down Cemetery Road” with Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson attached to star, Variety has learned.
This is now the second adaptation of Herron’s books to get the series treatment at Apple, with the other being the popular spy series “Slow Horses” starring Gary Oldman. Morwenna Banks, who is a writer on “Slow Horses,” will serve as lead writer on “Down Cemetery Road.”
The official logline of the new series states, “When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbor Sarah Tucker (Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm (Thompson). Emma Thompson is the two-time Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate who has left her indelible mark as an actress and a writer for more than 30 years. Let’s take a look back at 18 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on April 15, 1959, in Paddington, London, England, Thompson broke through with American audiences thanks to her Oscar-winning lead turn in the sumptuous Merchant-Ivory production “Howards End” (1992). She reunited with the filmmakers – along with her costar Anthony Hopkins – for “The Remains of the Day” (1993), which brought her a second Best Actress bid. That same year, she competed in the supporting category for “In the Name of the Father,” pulling off the rare feat of snagging two acting nominations in the same year. She returned to the Oscar race both as a performer and as a writer for the Jane Austin adaptation “Sense and Sensibility” (1995), for which she earned a Best Actress nomination...

Hollywood isn’t generally going great, even for experts like Hugh Grant. Recently, he spilled the beans on feeling nervous working with three highly coveted actresses. One of them is Kate Winslet, known for her mind-blowing acting chops, who caused the 63-year-old to feel a little jittery.
Hugh Grant in Love Actually
Then there’s Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep, two more stalwart entertainers who were included along with the remaining blend of nerves. These leading women certainly had Grant feeling the strain. It’s interesting to hear what the actor had to say about sharing the screen with these Hollywood symbols.

Actor Hugh Grant recently teamed up with Oscar-winner Kate Winslet for HBO’s limited series The Regime. At times, Winslet’s performance could be the scariest part of the show.
How Hugh Grant felt about working with Kate Winslet after all these years Kate Winslet | Charly Triballeau/Getty Images
Grant had a few reasons to be nervous when working alongside Winslet on The Regime, as the actor portrayed a very intimidating character. The limited series saw her playing powerful dictator Chancellor Elena Vernham whose mental health led to the fracture of her country.
It was a much different character than Winslet played when she first worked with Grant. The two originally teamed up for the 1995 flick Sense and Sensibility. It would also see her team up with stars like Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. Winslet looked forward to reuniting with Grant after three decades apart.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers through Episode 4 of “The Regime.”]
Kate Winslet has only one Academy Award, but good luck telling Hugh Grant that.
Created by “Succession” writer Will Tracy, HBO’s “The Regime” is a dark political satire about an authoritarian country and its dangerously squirrely ruler. The venomous Chancellor Elena Vernham is a scene-stealing TV character who gifts Winslet ample acting opportunity.
Winslet always delivers — be it through the text-heavy speeches given to Elena’s constituency, a handful of bespoke musical theater moments (complete with flawless costumes), or the crowning jewel episode that sees Vernham meet with ex-Chancellor turned prisoner Ed Keplinger. That’s Grant.
“I’ve barely seen her for 30 years since ‘Sense and Sensibility,’ and I was a bit frightened of her now,” Grant told IndieWire; he gives a shaggily chic performance as a flirty and shifty academic with a life framed in underground dystopia. “I mean, God almighty, she’s got about 400 Oscars and is revered.

How the tragic death of his beloved sister, Clare, gave Greg Wise a new outlook on navigating the end of life
Stepping inside Greg Wise’s home on a wet and windy day, he bursts into host mode. A cappuccino is made, pastries are served and – on noticing I’m a bit rain-lashed – a crackling fire is built. It’s incredibly homely, this place he shares with his wife, Emma Thompson. The kitchen is a riot of dangling pans, the living area is populated with fabric animals, and there’s a huge, inviting sofa to sink into – although Wise prefers not to use it. Things couldn’t be more cosy, which perhaps makes it all the stranger that we’re about to embark on an hour-long chat about death.

Last year, Frasier Crane returned to TV screens in the "Frasier" revival series. While it struggled to capture the magic of the original series, "Frasier" 2023 certainly had some high points. The festive season finale was one of the better Christmas episodes, and the show handled the passing of Martin Crane actor John Mahoney beautifully. Then there were the guest stars, which included actress Peri Gilpin, who played Frasier's producer on the original sitcom, and Bebe Neuwirth, who played Lilith Sternin on both "Frasier" and "Cheers."
Lilith debuted in the 1986 "Cheers" episode "Second Time Around," becoming a series regular and eventually starting a relationship with Kelsey Grammer's Frasier before the pair got married. By the end of the series they had broken up, and when "Frasier" debuted in 1993 the titular doctor had moved to Seattle while Lilith stayed in Boston with her and her ex-husband's son, Freddy. The films in contention for the 2024 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our odds currently indicate that “American Fiction” (7/2) will win the award, followed in order of likelihood by “Oppenheimer” (18/5), “Barbie” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Zone of Interest” (9/2).
This marks only the 14th instance in 96 years of all five Best Adapted Screenplay-nominated films also being in the running for Best Picture. Prior to the last time in 2017 – the year “Moonlight” achieved dual victories – this had happened only twice during the 21st century (2011; 2013) and once during the latter half of the 20th (1965). The bulk of cases occurred almost annually from 1934 to 1943, with the only inapplicable year being 1937.
Respective “The Zone of Interest” and “Oppenheimer” writers Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan are simultaneously nominated for Best Director, while Nolan is also set to face off against “American Fiction” scripter Cord Jefferson in the Best Picture race.

Hallmark Channel is capping off a month of original films themed around Jane Austen’s works with the premiere of a new feature-length adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. The classic story about whether young women should choose husbands based on romantic notions of love or practicality has been adapted for both television and film several times before. Many fans may remember either the 1995 film adaptation directed by Ang Lee or the 2008 BBC and PBS television miniseries starring Dominic Cooper and Charity Wakefield.
This Sense and Sensibility stands out from the other recent period adaptations of Austen’s works, however, as it’s produced by Hallmark’s Mahogany brand, which is devoted to producing original films and series with Black screenwriters, actors, directors, and other creatives. Unlike Netflix’s 2022 Persuasion adaptation, which used the controversial strategy of “color-blind casting,” Hallmark’s Sense and Sensibility deliberately sought out Black actors for principal and supporting roles.

Why do we love Hugh Grant? Let us count the swoony ways. Is it the adorably impish smile and mischievous blue eyes? The floppy hair? Or the self-deprecating charm? In a word, yes! The dashing British actor has set our hearts (and minds) aflutter ever since his hapless commitment-phobe Charles stumbled through his “I think I love you” speech to Andie MacDowell’s independent American in 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral (on Prime Video). He was adorably tongue-tied again the following year in Emma Thompson’s Oscar-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility (on Pluto TV) as Edward, whose long-repressed romantic feelings for Elinor Dashwood (Thompson) set up a happy ending. A few years later, we fell just as hard for his diffident, divorced London bookseller as fellow rom-com favorite Julia Roberts’ movie star did in 1999’s Notting Hill (also on Prime Video). Grant played a naughtier...

Professor Eloise Cavendish (Mallory Jansen) is a Jane Austen scholar invited to give a talk at an annual conference about the famous author. But the event combines serious scholarship with fandom, and Eloise isn’t sure how her work – which focuses on the role of money, not love in Austen’s novels – will be received. December 2003. Twenty years ago. It was a special time for moviegoers. That’s because it was the first holiday season in which “Love Actually” could actually be part of one’s Christmas time festivities. (Richard Curtis‘ ensemble romantic comedy was still playing to healthy crowds in cinemas.)
While the film would not figure into that year’s Academy Awards race, the cast did feature a handful of past Oscar contenders — and a few winners. Sho which “Love Actually” cast member will be next to earn an Oscar nomination?
The most noticeable of those winners was Emma Thompson, 1992’s Best Actress for “Howards End.” She tried (unsuccessfully) for acting awards three more times, including for 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” For penning that script, she accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for superbly adapting the classic novel by Jane Austen.

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. That leaves a sackful of Christmas films that should have also Oscar nominations. Here are five of them.
“Love Actually”
Writer-director Richard Curtis was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1995 but has never landed a follow-up bid. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).
Perhaps the biggest omission,...
