The Story: It is the future (like say – 1989). Robots are now commonplace, being used for everything from manual labor to childcare. But, robots go bad and when they do, the LAPD calls in Sgt. Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck), an expert in so-called “Runaways”. When a madman (Gene Simmons) invents a microchip that turns all robots into runaways, Ramsay, and his new partner (Cynthia Rhodes) must put a stop to his evil plan – the fate of the world just may depend on it! Oh, and also Ramsay is afraid of heights. Trust me, that’s important.
The Players: Starring: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Kirstie Alley, G. W. Bailey and Gene Simmons. Written and directed by Michael Crichton.
The History: While most famous for his novels, Michael Crichton actually had a decent Hollywood career as a director, having a couple of solid hits under his belt by the time 1984 rolled around.

Hollywood has brought several heart-thrilling action movies that have hooked audiences for years. Some of the movies spawned a successful franchise, catapulting its cast to fame. Sylvester Stallone and Tom Selleck are just one of the few names that have cemented a strong legacy in the cinematic world. But, it all comes with a hefty price, especially for the actors, who take a risk in action movies.

Both the actors have already experienced the same. Selleck recently reflected on his well-being as he spilled the beans on working in the action movies.

The police procedural series from CBS will be concluding its run this December. Blue Bloods, starring Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg, is currently in its 14th season, and it has turned out to be its last. The show’s star, Selleck, had warned CBS earlier this year that there are an “awful lot of people” who still enjoy the show and will not be ready to see it end. However, Deadline has reported that Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach has officially announced in a press conference yesterday that the show will wrap this year despite the network’s attachment to it.
The first half of Blue Bloods‘ 14th season premiered earlier this year on February 16. The second half, which will serve as the last batch of episodes for the series, will return in October. Reisenbach had told reporters at the press conference, “We really want to thank the cast and crew,...

As we’ve highlighted in previous videos and articles, those who exclusively purchase films through online services are not truly guaranteed to have it available in their collection when the buyer is at the whim of the service provider. The seemingly iron-clad way to have a movie ready-to-watch is if you can have it at your fingertips. There are thankfully some distribution brands that are releasing movies that have been previously hard to find. Shout Factory is one of those brands, and the company has now released details on the restoration of Quigley Down Under on Blu-ray.com.
Directed by Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove), Quigley Down Under stars Tom Selleck as sharpshooter Matt Quigley. “Arriving in Australia with nothing more than a saddle and his prized six-foot Sharps rifle, American sharpshooter Matthew Quigley thinks he’s been hired to kill off wild dogs,” reads the description. “But when he realizes...

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

As this past week was the first week of December, Netflix got things rolling with the usual glut of new titles. It’s easy to miss everything that went up on the streaming giant over the past seven days, so we’ve compiled a handy recap of every single movie and TV show that dropped from Monday, November 30th to Sunday, December 6th. In total, that’s 58 new additions.
The 1st obviously delivered the bulk of the haul, serving up a ton of fresh films to keep you entertained as we begin the festive season. Among the highlights was the original Jurassic Park and one of its sequels and if you missed them at the beginning of the week, you can also catch the likes of romcom 50 First Dates, animated film Monster House and the one and only E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. As for TV shows, all of Stargate was likewise added the same day.

The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.

Although actor Ben Mendelsohn's (Robin Hood) career stretches as far back as 1990's Quigley Down Under, the Australian didn't really come to prominence until 2010's fantastic Animal Kingdom. Since then he's made quite the name for himself as a villain with roles like John Daggett (The Dark Knight Rises), Orson Krennic (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and Nolan Sorrento…...

We compare the best and worst Robin Hood movies. From Errol Flynn to Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe to a fox, here's the definitive ranking.
Like a certain Saxon archer landing an arrow right down the center of a bullseye, another Robin Hood movie being around the corner is inevitable. One of the oldest and most beloved figures of English folklore, Robin of Locksley has evolved through the centuries from grifter and trickster to fallen nobleman, and finally to righteous social justice warrior enamored with a serious income distribution plan. He also has more easily made the jump to cinema in the 20th century than many of his legendary peers of yore like King Arthur and Beowulf.
Indeed, thanks in large part to the charms of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, Robin has been the star of one of the most important Hollywood films in cinema history,...

"Galaxy Quest" was far from the most famous Alan Rickman movie, but it may feature his most autobiographical role. As Alexander Dane, a classically trained Shakespearean actor (who's constantly boasting of the five curtain calls he received for playing Richard III) forever typecast as the alien warrior he played on a cult classic TV show, Rickman was riffing not only on Leonard Nimoy's difficult relationship with Mr. Spock from "Star Trek," but also on the strange and wonderful nature of his own career. Rickman, who died today at 69 from cancer, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and gained acclaim for his role as the Vicomte de Valmont in the 1985 Broadway production of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." And while he did spectacular and nuanced work in more highbrow films like "Sense and Sensibility" and "Truly Madly Deeply," the bulk of his fame came from a pair of genre pieces: the first "Die Hard,...

Alan Rickman chats to us about directing, Anthony Minghella, movie villains and A Little Chaos...
"Where does Den Of Geek come from as a title?", asked Alan Rickman as I settled into my seat to interview him for his second film as director, A Little Chaos. I don't usually write one of those setting the scene preambles for interviews, but there was something really quite special about hearing Alan Rickman's voice in person for the first time.
In truth, as I walked through the door, I had no idea what to expect. Would Rickman be curt? Frosty? Would he want to cut out my heart with a spoon?
None of the above. He was as you'd hope: both brilliant, and Alan Rickman. And here's how the interview went...

Hans Gruber in Die Hard. The Sheriff in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Yet Alan Rickman played a different movie villain between them...
Alan Rickman, in the space of a few years, committed to screen two of the finest movie villain performances of modern blockbuster cinema. It would be fair to say that both acted as a template of sorts for the standard British foe that would permeate big Hollywood movies for the decade that followed, and Rickman steered clear of villainous roles thereafter.
But sandwiched in-between the release of Die Hard in 1988 and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in 1991 was an Australian western by the name of Quigley Down Under. First released in 1990, although not making it to the UK until 1991 (some three months before Robin Hood arrived on UK cinema screens), it's a western set in Australia, directed by Simon Wincer. A quick review of tonight's "Arrow" coming up just as soon as I don't know how to vacation like a normal person... Sister show "The Flash" is the shiny new thing understandably getting all the attention, but "Arrow" has had a fine start to its third season. I didn't write about last week's episode, but it did a good job dealing with the emotional repercussions of Sara's murder, while "Corto Maltese" dealt nicely with the Malcolm/Thea relationship(*) and the way it in turn has altered Oliver and Thea's relationship. I don't much buy Diggle's rationale for Oliver not telling her the whole truth, but in general I have a much more anti-secrecy philosophy than the shared "Arrow"/"Flash" creative team, and Thea as secret ninja is a much better direction for her than Thea as underage club owner. (*) I particularly appreciated the tabling of the Hong Kong flashbacks in...

Die Hard, Robin Hood and Harry Potter are just a few highlights of Alan Rickman's movie career. We pick our favourite Rickman roles...
Because we are human beings who like things that are good, it goes without saying that we love Alan Rickman. One of the finest British screen actors of his generation - and a few others too - he's had a varied career, taking in memorable Hollywood villains to smaller independent fare. But what amongst his film roles (and we've focused on films that got a cinema release) are our favourites? Glad you asked...
10. Dogma
Kevin Smith's fourth film in some ways remains his most ambitious. In casting terms certainly, and the involvement of Alan Rickman led to the writer-director warning long time collaborator Jason Mewes that he "didn't want to piss off that Rickman dude".

You better watch Titanic, Top Gun and Braveheart while you can, because come 2014, Netflix will remove 80 films and a handful of TV shows from their streaming site.
According to Reddit, on New Year's Day, nearly 40 million streaming Netflix subscribers will no longer be able to watch some of the classic films and TV shows that have been so readily available in the past. Instead, they will have to join the seven million DVD subscribers and order their films to come in the mail.

The heads-up came from an anonymous post on Reddit, in which the user listed every film that is to be removed from instant streaming as of Wednesday, January 1. A Netflix spokesperson told CNN that the company often changes what films will be available for streaming based on licensing contracts made with the studios and filmmakers.

Life is ephemeral. Nothing lasts forever, least of all your favorite streaming movies and TV shows on Netflix. It used to be you could go to third-party websites to find out when movies would be expiring from Netflix’s streaming service, but no more. Now the only place to find that information is on individual listings within Netflix’s own website or apps. How are we to know which films we never got around to watching that we’ll be missing in a few days?
Well, where there’s a will there’s a way. In this case, that way is through the seedy back alley of the Internet known as Reddit, where one user was kind enough to list all the various films and TV shows that will no longer be on Netflix after the first of the year. Here is that very list:

A major downside of VOD services compared with having a vast Blu-ray or DVD library is timing. Services like Netflix, Hulu, etc. have contracts with content providers - contracts that expire usually around the end of a calendar year unless otherwise renewed.
Thus from January 1st, certain films will no longer be available on that service to watch when you want. Today, a Reddit post has listed the films that are about to drop off Netflix due to contract with various rights providers running out. When (or even if) they will return is anyone's guess. From dramas to action and everything in between, here's our pick of 20 underrated films from 1990...
Think back to the big films of 1990, and you'll probably immediately come up with things like Ghost, the year's top-grossing film, or maybe Home Alone, which made a star out of the young Macaulay Culkin.
If you're into sci-fi or action, you might pluck Total Recall, Back To The Future Part III or even Die Hard 2 out of your memory banks. But what about all those movies that didn't make it into the year's top 10 ranking films? As ever, there's a huge number of duds and forgettable flops, but there were plenty of films that were wrongly overlooked, too.

As all lovers of crime, suspense thriller, war, western, horror and science fiction films know, creating a truly great cinematic villain is no easy task. When it happens, it’s virtually impossible to forget that character.
We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains of the 1980’s.
The criteria for this article is the same as my previous article Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1970’s: the villains must be from live-action films-no animated features-and must pose some type of direct or indirect lethal threat. The villains can be either individuals or small groups that act as one unit.
The villains must be human or human in appearance, so no shape-shifting alien from John Carpenter’s amazing 1982 The Thing, no Aliens from James Cameron’s classic 1986 sequel and no Predator from John McTiernan’s beloved 1987 film of the same name.
Also, individuals that are the central protagonists/antiheroes...

Ever since I was a tiny, starry-eyed little sprocket, I’ve been more than a little obsessed with Australia. I think it probably started the first time I ever watched “Dot & the Kangaroo”.
“Dot & the Kangaroo” is actually kind of a trippy little movie. The part that I remembered the most strongly was actually the part about the Bunyip, a monster that terrorizes just about everyone. Weirdly, however, I remembered the word bunyip without remembering where the heck I had actually heard it. For a long time, I had just assumed that I must have made it up, maybe because of a bad, long repressed experience with turnips or something, except I have never actually hated that particular tuber. They can be quite delicious.
When I was a little kid, a couple of family members had VCRs and they used to have my cousins and me over for slumber parties that included watching movies.

Rarely has distributor exploitation been as blatant as in the case of Simon Wincer’s The Day After Halloween (1980), a ludicrously-named Australian outing originally optioned under the name of Centerfold, then changed to Snapshot after the producers were unable to secure that title, and was eventually released as One More Minute. It appeared on video shelves here in the U.S. on VHS both in 1983 from Catalina Home Video under the title of The Day After Halloween and in 1985 as The Night After Halloween on Magnum Home Entertainment. The film came on the heels of the John Carpenter-scripted Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) which was set against the milieu of the fashion industry. Filmed in 1978 and released in Australia the following year, The Day After Halloween has absolutely nothing to do with John Carpenter’s seminal holiday suspense yarn, and isn’t even a slasher film. It isn’t even a thriller.

The Australian Army’s 34th Battalion arrived in France in 1916 and fought against the Germans on the Western Front. The unit’s little-heralded story will be chronicled in the ensemble war drama The 34th Battalion.
A soccer hardman and Hollywood action star, Vinnie Jones and Avatar’s Stephen Lang will now join a cast that includes Luke Hemsworth (brother of Chris and Liam Hemsworth), Emilie de Ravin (Brick), Charles Mesure (Desperate Housewives), Les Hill and Andrew Lees of Rescue Special Ops, Claire van der Boom (Hawaii Five-0), Tony Bonner (Quigley Down Under, and Vince Colosimo (Body of Lies), respectively.
Jones will play the British-born Lieutenant-Colonel who led the battalion, while Lang is a U.S. officer who is part of the squad.
Ian Sparke will serve as executive producer and his son Luke Sparke will be making his directorial debut on the feature. The father-son team also wrote the screenplay.

It’s the month of October. It’s Halloween. No, not the day itself, but tis the season. That means we need to focus on some truly excellent 80’s horror surrounding our beloved holiday. Sure we could give the rehash job to Halloween and its subsequent sequels, but that’s not entirely in spirit of the game although I can assure you that I’m working on something that focuses on the Carpenter magnum opus. Today we’re going to focus on some horror flicks that are about Halloween, but aren’t John Carpenter’s Halloween. Let’s talk about The Day After Halloween, Trick or Treats, Lady in White in our first It Came From 1980X triple feature offering. Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter (Michael Mann, 1986, USA):
Noonan is absolutely incredible as a serial murderer in this underrated adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon. With all respect to the talented but miscast actors involved in Brett Ratner’s 2002 adaptation Red Dragon (USA), with the exception of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, the acting in this earlier, superior version of the book exists on a much higher level. Most notably, there’s nothing resembling a comparison between Noonan’s Francis Dollarhyde and Ralph Fiennes’ interpretation. This role is by far Noonan’s finest film work to date and should not be missed.
Other notable Tom Noonan performances: Phoenix (Danny Cannon, 1998, USA).
Christopher Walken as Brad Whitewood Sr.in At Close Range (James Foley, 1986, USA):
Having once described his role in this film as “the hillbilly Lucifer”, Walken is incredible as a rural crime boss bringing his son,...

There’s not too much about Quigley Down Under to set it apart from the dozens of generic westerns produced since the genre’s heyday. It may transplant the typical gun-for-hire story to Australia and take advantage of the sweeping landscapes down under, but when push comes to shove, Quigley offers nothing new in the story it tells. Westerns have a few common stories that get used over and over again, and a gunslinger hired to do a deed only to discover the employer has nefarious intentions is one such example. You can put as many twists on the story as you’d like, but the fact is genres repeat themselves (and not just westerns), and Quigley Down Under amounts to just a well-filmed blip on the radar. A blip with a damned fine mustache, that is.

The Rules Of The Game (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members,...
